I love this video his sheep stand in the corner in a large group, staring at him. Its like there thinking " nobody move ! Maybe the farmer wont see us! Lol 😅😅
For the sake of my own health, I wouldn’t use organophosphate. I have seen how it has ruined the health of operators. I would use Spot On or Crovect to treat the maggots and also apply the Click as well. I have never had dirty bums from wet grass and we get plenty of rain. Just the time of year for strongyle worms. A worm count would be helpful. Young stock more susceptible to worm burdens. They need crutching too. I would definitely shear back the soiled wool as the strike appearance goes further than is obvious. I recall that Click can be applied straight after shearing but it also states that it will not work on dirty wool.
A friend and I have five pet sheep, all ex breeding ewes. Just under a week ago, we discovered that one of our two polled White Dorsets had fly strike. Seems a bit early for fly strike, but could be due to the wet start of the year, then a warm spell. Last September, it was the other polled White Dorset. The three Hebridean crosses seem unaffected, thankfully. Perhaps the Dorsets are more prone to it?🤔 They do tend to get hotter and more sweaty, due to the type of wool.🐑
Flies don't like wind. If it's possible, configure paddocks so animals can access wind, or move animals to windy paddocks in wet humid weather patterns.
Treated 6 lambs on tuesday exactly 10 weeks since using zermasect which lasts 10 to 12 weeks ,all ewes and lambs dipped on wedensday ,click is best but does not treat ticks which we have ,used to use ectofly but only lasts 6 weeks not long enough
Hi David, I looked up organophosphates. It's dangerous stuff for humans. Be careful with it. We have meat sheep. One has a bald spot / sore. I am looking for what may be causing it. May take her to the vet. Thanks for the video. Stay safe! Ron from Texas. :)
Hi Ron. We get microscopic mites on sheep especially in winter. We call it Scab which is very similar to mange in dogs. The sheep keep scratching on fences and hedges and end up with bare patches. Plunge dipping in organophosphates is the weapon of choice for treatment but very dangerous work!
I use Dysect on the sheep & on the lambs if done early enough (59 day withdrawal). Otherwise any of the shorter withdrawal sprays on the lambs. I clip all the affected wool area off, then if bad use blue spray. Use then dysect to treat the area affected .
How long does the Dysect protect them for? I know some farmers fully shear anything that is struck which is probably a good way to get them thriving again.
What’s the story with the wool I seen a lot a farmers just leaving it outside Even if u only get 20c pre pound It takes it away So what ur plan for the wet wool now
I use ectofly on all lambs, it only covers them for 8 weeks but are usually gone by then. It has a 7 day withdrawal so handy for lambs close to weight. It can also be used as a treatment for ewes.
Ya similar but only prevention not treatment ( I think). It works out around 84cent per lamb for ectofly and 1.93 for clik extra. I know clik gives 19 weeks protection which would work for ewe lambs but I do them again in August and shear them in October. I know every system is different but it seems to work for me.
I would be cautious of underdosing. Wormer resistance is a big issue and the next thing, in my opinion, will be fly treatments, as we are seeing with the dips. Click binds to the fleece and spreads in the wool grease so by underdosing there will be less chemical cover all over so flies/maggots more likely to survive and grow and then we have click resistant maggots rather than shorter cover period, would be interested to hear what the manufacturer has to say that’s just my thoughts!
I believe Clikzin, the 8 week protection version has 12.5mg/ml. Clik extra has 65mg/ml of the active ingredient, dicyclanil. I'm probably looking at it all wrong but my understanding is more active ingredient = longer protection and it naturally reduces out of the fleece over time.
Do sheeps poop like cows??? Why they look like shitty booty? Is very hard having farm animal's not really knowing about them (me) im so shock finding out sheeps get maggots like that. Thanks for showing us.
Unfortunately our wool is worthless. It will end up on the manure heap. The 8 week protection Clikzin has 7 day slaughter withdrawal. The 19 week protection has a 40 day withdrawal.
Hi David I use the click too. Good product. I apply a few days after the clipping and that seems to work for me. Lambs I had 1 so far and that was due too the cheaper blue product. And trying to sell fat stock and stay within the withdrawal periods. Click is great. Keep up the videos. I have the tups out and the 2nd cycle is due in the middle of this week. Suffolk Power 😂
I think like all chemicals, everything is weaker Even Roundup , one application use to last on weeds now you have to use twice a year I always use a water can when application of winter dip, I find not as much waste But as you say Every days a Sheep School day
Great video we use crovect but it only lasts 8 weeks but it has a short retention period so we usually do them twice but here anything is better than the maggots spot on will kill maggots too👍
@@sheepschool365 as far as I remember it's £75 for 5 ltr and I put 30 mls on the lambs and 40mls on the ewes not sure how much per head but it seems to work ok 🙂
WOW! Thanks for taking good care of your livestock.
Another great informative video cheers
Happy christmas David. Give the sheep a nice treat for christmas David.

I'll tell her that. 👌

Have couple of fecal egg samples sent to lab, will be interesting to see what the results are...

Always see the maggots after the calm muggy days.

Can't beat dipping once a year to clean them up 👌

That's very interesting about breed susceptibility. Seems harsh culling based on it but trends are trends.....
Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
David all stock in great condition all roads lead to Roscommon sale.Cost nothing to look at them and very little to buy.Orlaith promises to be there
She is looking for 5% attendance fee...😁
Mais pourquoi les mouches vont pondre dans la laine des moutons ???
Just wondering what breed your sheep are, they're class ?
Thanks Peter. They are all purebred Lleyns.
@sheepschool365 Thanks, for that love the videos.
Great video David aye the the fly strike is a curse thank god you got it sooner than later it could of been a whole lot worse 👌
Thanks 👍
Why did you choose Llyens breed of sheep?
Very hardy milky sheep with no feet trouble and a great crop of lambs without too many triplets.
@@sheepschool365 that’s great information thank you. How much do they typically weigh?
@@sheepschool365 consistent doubles per ewe for lambs?
Average mature weight for the ewes is about 70kg.
Do lambs finish early? An at what weight
With the wool being so thick how does the spray penetrate wear It needs to be with the maggots?
I believe it contains emulsifiers that help penetrate the wool. Straight water would just run off without getting near the skin.
I use Dysect on the sheep & on the lambs if done early enough (59 day withdrawal).
Otherwise any of the shorter withdrawal sprays on the lambs.
I clip all the affected wool area off, then if bad use blue spray. Use then dysect to treat the area affected .

Would u click the sheep after u treated them with the winter dip or would u just chance the winter dip on them feu
Depends on the time of year. The dip will only prevent maggots for 2-3weeks.
@@sheepschool365 would u go straight on with the click just after putting on the dip?
Works better if it goes on dry sheep so I'd probably wait till they dry off
@@sheepschool365 thanks for the advise love the videos great help to see what other farms are doing keep up the great work
That's seems a handy way to get rid of the maggots. Did it work?
Works every time but some countries are stricker with using dip. Cypermethrin is probably a less toxic chemical which works great also 👍
What’s the story with the wool
I seen a lot a farmers just leaving it outside
Even if u only get 20c pre pound
It takes it away
So what ur plan for the wet wool now
Sad reality is that the wool is worthless! Nowhere will take it round here even for free. It will end up in the manure like last years.
Good stuff
👍
Do u work else where from the sheep David
Have a look at my workshop video: ruclips.net/video/aITFu4LQhZk/видео.html
That'll give you an idea of some of the other work I do.
Click them earlier .
Love the channel 👍
Thanks Micheál.. will definitely Clik them earlier next year...👍
Interesting video

What do you dose them for strongyle worm ?
I usually dose white drench round mid May, yellow drench end of June. Cydectin around this time of year and ivermectin drench end of September.
I use ectofly. 5 weeks cover.
Thanks Robbie. How many times per season do you do them? How much does it cost per head?

Did u not put the wool sacks in the shed, is there a slaughter withdrawal on the click for lambs

We find damp wool get a smell that brings the fly in the wrinkles or hollow in the shoulder blades
I seem to get a lot of maggots around the shoulders too.
Do you ever see maggots in their hooves?
Thankfully I have never seen them in the hooves. I believe some breeds are more prone than others.
How wide is the chute for your handling system?
It's 18 inches inside measurement.
Our young lad has a few sheep here and the same family gets maggots every year , there’s definitely something heritable in it
Well Sean. I'm finding most of the problems with sheep is hereditary even down to the will to live. Some lines are more prone to dying than others..
I bet it stinks to high heaven when this happens and you have to shave it can’t imagine how miserable that has to feel
I couldn’t have sheep, I would be out in the field washing their butts!!!!
Maggots are truly creepy. Hope they are long gone for market. Great to see your girls and lively wife. 👍👍😊
The girls are enjoying summer holidays. Great to have them about for the sheep work...👌
A Lively wife is definitely very handy when dealing with Sheep !!

You shouldn't b using round up..dangerous to the environment an to animals an humans.... IT SHOULD BE BANNED. 😢

Absolutely. Should have mentioned that....👌
Put them all in the one pen for the sale
Usually try to make match them up to size and shape for the sale but firing all together in one pen might work the best 👌

Boy you should become a click sales men your trying to get a sponsor
Not at all. It's a really good product for preventing maggots which are the bane of most sheep farmers lives!
Well you should get a sponsor blessings to your farm !!
