So happy to see that you are gardening! I am 75 and I enjoy being outside in my garden and I am planning on getting 10 chickens in few months. Happy gardening!
I am 73 and refreshing to someone else take matters into their own hands and figure out how to solve a problem and then fix it. I do that and using materials I have and try not to buy anything. Made poop trays under roosts and many other things including storage building doors. Thank you for sharing. I just found your channel. We got this.
“Go girl” It’s ok to do things for ourselves instead of waiting. Great job! I am 75 and I am gardening and it keeps me healthier than most people my age. I plan on getting some chickens in a couple of months. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! I am 68 years young today and i want to thank you for being a homesteaders voice for us young ladies who are wanting to do it ourselves. Nothing at all against the men we may have in our lives just seeing that we can do some things we want to do!
I really enjoyed watching your post. First time I've seen anything on my feed from an older woman. I am 74 and am building a new coop. I took the old coop apart and am making a new coop reusing my lumber. I am reducing the size of my flock to fifteen birds so I am making a much smaller coop. I've never had a problem with my chickens wanting to roost in the nesting boxes at night. The roost I have for them is much higher up than the nest boxes and they seem to want to be as close to the roof as possible. I'm subscribing so I will get to see more of your post.
My 12 hens share ONE large nesting box accessible from inside and outside. My eggs are always clean, because I keep their nest clean daily. I built a pull-out drawer under their roost and line it with a plastic tarp. That allows me to roll up the tarp (full of fine pine shavings & their poop) to clean. The drawer is 3" deep, which allows me to deep-layer compost and have to clean up only ONCE weekly, with no odors even in Winter. When it's time to change the bedding, I just roll up the tarp, empty it in my composter, hang it up & hose it off, then put it back in the drawer and add a layer of fresh bedding. My coop is insulated steel with a concrete floor, so preditory critters can't dig underneath. In the summer, I can easily hose it out now & then.
Just found you on RUclips, the algorithm likes you! :) I just want to say I love love love seeing another lady using power tools! Too many are scared to even try to use them!
What a pleasure it is to see someone about my age doing the things necessary to make "it" all work... Tools were made to use.... There's nothing masculine about them.
Typical tools not to mention so much else actually are made for men. That is why things sometimes have to be upgraded for use by different sized and abilitied (my word) peoples.
I learned the hard way that my roosts were too high, and my rooster got hematomas on the bottom of his feet from landing. poultry keepers 360 taught me that roosts should be no higher than 18", ideally 12" high from the ground or bottom of the coop. happy chickens, happy eggs!
May I advise you to wear an N 95 mask when working in the chicken house? I can already hear the shortness of breath. Love your channel. It just popped up on my feed. I subscribed.

Wonderful idea! You popped up on my feed. Your a girl after my own heart with them tools. I’ve been working on my coop all afternoon preparing for the Big Freeze!
That top nest box addition came out great. I really like your the nest boxes in your coop #3, look very easy to clean out. Yep seems like the simplest projects take forever to get done!
Just found you and subscribed! I am looking for a solution for my nest box, the coop is not a walk in coop so I will have to try something different that I can put down and up without entering the coop. Thanks for taking me along for your journey.
Nest boxes only so high? Roll up tarps? So good to hear. So very long winters up here in UP and at 79 NOW really dread it. But can always recall 12 year old farm child feeding chickens when I go out and GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE call the wild turkeys in the winter.
I put a hinged board across the front of my nest boxes. To clean, I unhook it (hook and eye) and it drops down so I can use a metal dustpan to empty the nest box, then a whisk broom to sweep it out. Fast and easy. And I agree with the other commenter that you should wear a dust mask in a coop whenever the bedding is being stirred up. Once you realize you have lung damage it's too late. Also there are diseases you can get from the tiny dusty particles of chicken manure. I also use an N95 mask when creating sawdust with woodworking, cleaning ashes from the stove, and when I mow when it's dry and dusty. But I now have asthma from my years of not using a mask. 😢
Quick note on leaves: I'm 76,live alone on my North Texas homestead and try to work smart in place of working hard. To that end, I wait until mid to late January to deal with fallen leaves. That gives Mother Nature a chance to blow and pile them where she will as well as start them composting. I gather them ONCE using an electric leaf vacuum and pile them ONCE, then let my chickens work the pile.
Thank you for your comment and tip. I do use leaves for composting and chicken entertainment. In January, there is usually snow here, so I won’t be working much outside then. ❄️
I got tired of the poop also.. I just put 4 longer screws in each end of the 5 boxes and put a piece of 2ft chicken wire over the entry to the boxes at night.
How many chickens do you have ??? I have 8 hens and one rooster. I have 4 boxes they can lay in, but they only use 2 of the 4 boxes it funny watching them wait on a occupied box
Mow leaves off your lawn ?? Fallen leaves are nature’s way of suppressing weeds, feeding the soil and PROTECTING whatever is growing beneath the leaves. I always welcome Fall leaves 👍
Hmmm, I had to quit using my open topped chicken feeder because the would sit on the upper rim and poop in it. You don't have that problem? Subbed, liked, and black belled.

I resize tools to fit my hand, height, strength bc they are typically made for a certain type which doesn't reflect most.

On the top thing you build & pull down or push up: I was thinking some washers added to the nut & bolts would give more movement

Hi we just found your channel! New friends from Texas. ❤
Welcome! Thank you!
Mrs. Betty and I are getting 6 laying chickens in the spring. What breed of chickens do you have?
Amber Stars from Murray McMurray. They lay well, but don’t have much meat.
I got tired of the poop also.. I just put 4 longer screws in each end of the 5 boxes and put a piece of 2ft chicken wire over the entry to the boxes at night.
Thanks for the great idea!
Do you plan to make closures for the other nests?
@@SarPoe Yes! They also have the same problem! 🤨
How many chickens do you have ???
I have 8 hens and one rooster.

Nine in coop #3, and 20 in coop #1 (just one rooster in coop #2.) They can be choosey about which coop is their favorite!
close the nest boxes just before sun set. Open the nest boxes about half an hour after dark.
Thanks for the tip!
Means you have to be up early to open them up for the day.
Yes, but so far it’s worked out okay. 😳 It’s been good for me! Thanks for your comment!
