I read an article years back that said. This is the undisputed favorite band of rock band and the one band no other band ever wanted to follow one stage.
I saw them with a few minor Canadian acts ..Slik Toxic Sven Gali and a really young Tragically Hip in attendance at a club in Toronto and the question was how the hell are they not the biggest band on the planet!
I'll never forget the first time I saw this video on MTV back in '89. I stopped everything and was just glued to the TV. "Who are these guys? There's a 7ft tall black guy with a mohawk singing like a banshee. There's a short, unassuming little white guy totally tearing it up like a beast on the guitar and an incognito drummer who is so in the pocket it is stuff of legend. This is the greatest band I've ever heard!". The next day I went to the record store and bought "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" and "Out of the Silent Planet". Just like that, one video was all it took. I became a diehard fan and haven't stopped all these decades later.
"In The New Age" was the first song I heard from them on a rock station. Same experience for me. Picked up Out Of The Silent Planet album the next day.
Gretchen was the first album I ever owned on cd.I bought it strictly because I liked the cover art.The minute I turned it on I knew this band was special.
RollingStone also knocked every album Led Zeppelin ever made. So they aren't much of an authority. Even though I will forever be a fan of this band and have every album.
After Faith, Hope, Love their self titled album never got proper attention for the masterpiece it is. As an armchair quarterback, I would say "Black Flag" was a poor choice for a single when you had "Not Just For The Dead" on the same record. I realize some people will say " That's Ty singing lead again. He's not their best lead vocalist. And yes, he's white, too" And those things are technically true. Both Ty and Doug trade the lead singer role in this song. The most important lyrics in the song "Will it be? Can you see? Are you free?" And the hook, are all sang by Doug Alone. I see him as the lead, even though Ty sings the verses. Vocals and harmonies from all 3 are what makes this band so great. I didn't even mention that incredible guitar sound from that amp. Which is merely icing on a delicious cake.
I believe what the brother’s trying to say is that these chords are definitely not your basic power chords or Barchords. There is some serious creative business going on in that guitar player’s choice of chords.

Totally. They are amazing. I have always thought that the band name didn't help them. Sure, it should be the music and not the name of the band that does the talking for a band. Steven those were such great memories. Amazing, amazing band. I remember the first time my buddy introduced me to Gretchen. Its all I played for two weeks. She struck my heart like lightning!
I've been a King's X fan for 20 years, and a singer all my life, but I just learned to day that "Over My Head I Hear Music In The Air" is an old gospel spiritual song. I've seen the band 5 times over the years, love it when they play this. Most memorable was in a crumbling old theater in Denver, dUg got the whole medium sized crowd singing while he went off above it all, brought tears. Love these guys so much.
I went to school with Jerry the drummer and lived next to Dugs mom in Houston Texas. After winning the Battle of the bands in Houston and going to LA with a record contract...they were expected to be bigger than the Beatles...didn't happen. But the were voted best bar/club band 12 yrs in a row in LA. They just released a new album 6 months or so ago...check it out...best in years!
Like Doug Pinnick, I was raised by my Southern Baptist grandmother. The day I got the news my grandmother passed away, as her executor. I had to get on the road to her house immediately. To keep from crying (as it is dangerous to drive even straight roads, let alone through mountains, with tears blurring your vision(, I decided to pass the time of the 6 hour drive by starting necessary calls. I found it truly bizarre that I only got to hear one song in its entirety that day, and it was THIS song!
This song reminds me of my grandma i lived with her when this song came out and there was an afternoon tv station that played heavy metal videos at 3pm to 4 pm and i would watch it everyday and this video would play everyday.
Actually it really is cool. I hope they still receive royalties. RUclips wasn't even a wisp of a dream in our minds back then. Back when we still had corded phones and the internet was just barely online. It's weird how fast things changed from there.
@@GregJoshuaW dUg mentioned in an interview recently that Atlantic released the full rights back to them, so yes King's X are getting royalties again :)
back then it was all about the record company not being behind the band and promoting them . there was a band called riot with same problem great songs but never broke out . twisted sister faced the same problem and went to England with money they borrowed from a club owner in NYC
I used to have a copy of them live on cassette, though not sure what concert it was. But thanks for posting that. And the album was Fire Down Under not Below in case others read this who aren't familiar with the band. 35 years later and never remember for sure if it's Under or Below. Go figure.
I grew up on this music. It is almost biblical to me now. I saw them live when I was 9 for the first time; at 29 they are still my favorite band. Nothing can compare to them, and after the live stream I watched tonight from Nashville I love them now more than ever. God bless King's X and the hard times they have carried me through. I would not have made it without their music.
What is humorous about this band, despite the lack of respect from the industry suits, is most bands admit King's X is one of their favorites. Some listeners just don't get the band. Unfortunate. I love this band.
I tweet you guys regularly King's X. It's in my best interests for my record collection to be more valuable, so I tweet songs on youtube constantly. I do give a damn about the little guys, and often tweet stuff I don't own also, and I suppose that is charity theoretically. I do free promos for stuff I own. People should do that for their things if they have some time to kill.
As an ex-bandmate once said, “You’re a Drummer with the soul of a Guitarist…”I took Guitar lessons first, but I didn’t have the patience with my thick hands/fingers. I put Steve Howe at #1 for his overall versatility, but Ty Tabor is, without a doubt, the most purely talented guitarist I’ve seen since 1987. His 12-string work on “Legal Kill” is great, particularly during the outro. I have seen King’s X 27 times (I’m from Houston), and they’re just otherworldly in so many ways. They're the tightest band I’ve ever seen, on record and live, and Tabor was also a drummer growing up, so it makes sense that they’re so locked. Plus the fact they’ve played together SO LONG. And, Jerry Gaskill NEVER overplays the drums, generally matching his kick drum to Doug’s Bass notes during single-note sections. Very minimalist, yet very interesting. So, ANYWAY, Steve Howe/Ty Tabor/Alex Lifeson/Elliot Easton/Randy Jackson would probably be my Top 5, with a shout to Tom Morello and Reb Beach. The top 2 never change, but there have been so many great Guitarists since the 70s, that it’s hard to decide!Cheers!
Thank you for posting God Bless you and your family and your friends and your viewers. I remember seeing this for the first time on a black and white television set. Because I was the poor kid that had to take the bus to memorial high school in 1987
Saw that tour in Houston!!! Satch headlined on that night. What an unforgettable night!!! Especially as a guitar player, it was almost a religious experience!!!
This is one of the greatest songs of all time!! Everytime i listen to this,i feel so good,so invincible,it affects me most when i'm down, just like today. Funny how this song always came when i needed some good vibes...
I think that they are one of the most under rated and unappreciated bands of all time. A friend gave me "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" back in the late 80's and I've been a fan ever since.
bands are not underrated, nor are they overrated. They are what they are, they achieved the status which they deserved. Just because you personally like a band more than most people do doesn't mean they are underrated...it just means most people don't love them as much as you do.
+Hairmetalmusic Rose - Exactly. I get so sick of hearing that. They were not underrated. They just didn't get the exposure or media coverage they deserved. The word "Underrated" almost makes it seem like people rated them as being not as good as other bands.
The bass tone Dug has is the epitome of what distorted bass should be. Not fuzzy or so intense that notes are unintelligible. But rather, enhance the top end and midrange with a good amount of bite while leaving bottom end clean and big to help reinforce the guitars.
I met a girl named Gretchen at the airport. She was going to Alberquerque, though. I said I hoped her plane would make a wrong turn and head northeast. She wasn't a fan of King's or Bugs Bunny.
This was one of my mates favourite bands before he died and its the anniversary today so I had to give Kings X a listen. I hope you're rocking in paradise you ol bastard!
My ex and I used to run into the lead singer all the time in the ‘90s all over Houston at Cactus Records once but primarily at Vinyl Edge. One of the coolest local rock stars and bands ever and that’s saying something for Houston’s 90s rock scene. My ex (May he RIP) and I had all their stuff and quite a bit of it was signed by him and other band members wo even asking before we ever left the store and afaik they were just customers as well. They were great live too!
I love the guitar work and tone, the beat of the song - man, I love everything about this song! Just heard it for my first time yesterday on the radio, and I had to hurry to RUclips to find it. Man, this is a HOT song! The guitar work is genius throughout, and the vocal work is amazing!
It's a crime against good taste that this band isn't one of the biggest bands on the planet right now. I can only assume this is because they're just TOO good for most of the consumer sheep crowd to comprehend. Also, dUg has the best goddamn scream in rock 'n' roll, dude actually SINGS when he's screaming!
A band that were ahead of their time, so far ahead we still, unfortunately, haven't got there yet. Unique mix of Soul, Funk, Pop and Metal. So glad we got more songs from them.
Some high school friends and I drove from Lake Charles to Houston to be in this video. What a great day, and these guys were top notch. Very down to earth. I still remember when this video debuted on MTV and we all huddled around to see if we could find ourselves in it. Our three seconds of fame would come at 3:49-3:52. Good times.
I'd forgotten how good this song sounds! "Mission" was the first song I heard off the cassette I bought, so that was my introduction to the sound of King's X!
I still to this day marvel at the way the bass wanders underneath the main part of the riff. He only plays in unison with it a couple of times after the handclap section. Most bands, including ones I've been in myself, would've had the bass and guitar in unison throughout. So many twists to their songs. Not one note that hasn't been pored over.
*Atlantic Records* really dropped the proverbial ball with these guys, especially from 1992-1997, when King's X was hot 🔥 and opening up for major bands like Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Scorpions, Cheap Trick, Motley Crue, and Pearl Jam. They were an influence/inspiration to numerous acts, such as Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pantera, Skillet, and Dream Theater. 🤘 🎸 🎹 🥁
One of favorite all time songs. Three awesome dudes producing a killer sound. So much volume, range, harmonies, energy, and that guitar. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Ty Tabor on 🎸
I just discovered Black The Sky yesterday morning. That was my introduction to them. I feel like an idiot because a friend told me over a decade ago when we were in school that it was her favorite band. Never checked it out until it came on spotify at random. Criminally underrated is very accurate!
“Black The Sky” is an AWESOME song, from an AWESOME, and VERY ANGRY album. It’s one of those songs where the pain just drones on and on. Jerry doesn’t overplay the drums (ever), giving space for all that beautiful Guitar HEAVINESS and Vocal pain to bleed through. I venture to guess it’s a song about Doug’s struggle with living in the closet as a Christian (at that time, may he return one day) and how hard it was to do such a thing. There are MANY references to this struggle on the “Dogman” album, and it’s heartbreaking because it’s just a fact that many people are BORN with the biology of homosexuality (my guess is around half). So, what does one do, especially f they’re a Christian? The song is awesome, as is most of the album. It’s my favorite King’s X album because of the change in Producer from Sam “Embezzler” Tayor to Brendan O’Brien. He gave them that deep, hard sound, the embodiment of “Heavy Music”, which they invented anyway, that they had needed, especially since “Faith, Hope, Love”. “Don’t Care” is another emotionally menacing song, and the drumming on the outro is fantastic, as are Ty and Doug’s timing while Jerry solos a bit…right on time. “Pillow” is another soul-searching song with gut-wrenching Guitar tone. WOW. Cheers!
By far one of the most talented bands to grace the music scene in decades. Every element of their sound is unmistakeable and unmatched in the realm of hard rock today.
King's X and Living Colour need to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!

Yeah, they're great, humble guys, and Doug Pinnick is the nicest musician I have ever met in my life.
Steven those were such great memories. Amazing, amazing band. I remember the first time my buddy introduced me to Gretchen. Its all I played for two weeks. She struck my heart like lightning!
This stuff has aged well. I think I like them more now than I did when I was a kid.
So stoked to see the views on this vid slowly build til they finally crack 1 mil, King's X deserves the success and so much more
Actually it really is cool. I hope they still receive royalties. RUclips wasn't even a wisp of a dream in our minds back then. Back when we still had corded phones and the internet was just barely online. It's weird how fast things changed from there.
Great to come back to this video once every few months to see how many new people checked in =D

🤞🤞🤞
@@GregJoshuaW dUg mentioned in an interview recently that Atlantic released the full rights back to them, so yes King's X are getting royalties again :)
this band never got what they deserved . its all about the music over our head . good message . God Bless and Rock On
back then it was all about the record company not being behind the band and promoting them . there was a band called riot with same problem great songs but never broke out . twisted sister faced the same problem and went to England with money they borrowed from a club owner in NYC
Riot's Fire Down Below is one of the greatest hard rock albums ever.
Check out riot live at my fathers place .
I feel the same & wish I could have discovered them at the age of nine but I turned 9 in 1979.
❤
Ty Tabor is a guitar god! I wish I had his mad skills!
One of the greatest rock bands ever. Period. There is no justice.
Another band that should have been huge. A great underrated act
Greatest bass tone ever
Lemmy. Pete steele.
Speaking of tones, Ty Tabor is no slouch, when it comes to tone.
Doug Pinnick also plays a wicked 12 string bass.
At a time when it was either glam or thrash, underrated acts such as King's X ended up flying under most peoples' radar.
Don't you mean over their heads?
True. Back in the day when Mike Judge ruined Kip Winger's career. Who knew?
not mine! I have loved them since they first came on the scene.Amazing band and great live too. :)
bwahaha! good one!
I was a big thrash guy back in the day and thought these guys were amazing.
Tabor's chops are second to none!
I love all of their unique jazzy-like chords that hit you by surprise. They make you sit up in your seat. You get goosebumps . Love it!
Best trio in the world
Here is absolutely killer everyone and everything...
Thank you for posting God Bless you and your family and your friends and your viewers. I remember seeing this for the first time on a black and white television set. Because I was the poor kid that had to take the bus to memorial high school in 1987
bruh, I only found out about this band yesterday from Rick Beatos drop d video, this some good shit man
Me too!!!
Get ready for the ride ..... dug himself has solo stuff that’s great!
Welcome to the club, gentlemen!
Brothers!
Thanks, Rick! Same here.
I saw these guys followed by Joe Satriani, followed by Dream Theater. What a show!
littlecouchgames I saw that show too!
So did I. I went to that show specifically because King;s X and Satch were there. Magical to see... :)
Saw that tour in Houston!!! Satch headlined on that night. What an unforgettable night!!! Especially as a guitar player, it was almost a religious experience!!!
Holy christmas batman!
Wow
This is one of the greatest songs of all time!!
Everytime i listen to this,i feel so good,so invincible,it affects me most when i'm down, just like today.
Funny how this song always came when i needed some good vibes...
Commented just to remind you of this. ;)
Same. I play it before I start a project and need to get pumped up.
Doug "DUG" Pinnick sure did have a *hairstyle* all of his own back then ! ..lolz. 0:27 😄 🎤 🤘
I think that they are one of the most under rated and unappreciated bands of all time. A friend gave me "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" back in the late 80's and I've been a fan ever since.
I just posted this to my Facebook page and said the exact same thing! about them being so underrated!
bands are not underrated, nor are they overrated. They are what they are, they achieved the status which they deserved. Just because you personally like a band more than most people do doesn't mean they are underrated...it just means most people don't love them as much as you do.
not in this case. This band is and was TOTALLY underrated.
+Hairmetalmusic Rose - Exactly. I get so sick of hearing that. They were not underrated. They just didn't get the exposure or media coverage they deserved. The word "Underrated" almost makes it seem like people rated them as being not as good as other bands.
My favorite by KX❤️🎶
Music the gift of God !🙏
Grew up in Houston listening to these guys in a 1972 Chevelle. The car was fast and loud and so was the music. What a great time!
The bass tone Dug has is the epitome of what distorted bass should be. Not fuzzy or so intense that notes are unintelligible. But rather, enhance the top end and midrange with a good amount of bite while leaving bottom end clean and big to help reinforce the guitars.
THESE GUY'S R FANTASTIC, REMIND ME OF THE GOAT PRINCE.
*Music over my head - oh yeah - Amen.*
What a great album Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is.
I met a girl named Gretchen at the airport. She was going to Alberquerque, though. I said I hoped her plane would make a wrong turn and head northeast. She wasn't a fan of King's or Bugs Bunny.
Amazing band. Insanely underrated. Sounds way bigger than just a three piece!
WOW!!! 1 MILLION VIEWS!!! Great job King's X!!! Awesome hard working band still going strong!!!
Pure rock n roll, edgy and well-choreographed vid, great riffs and extreme vocalization. What else do you need? Great Band!
still one of the best metal voices from the 80s houston texas bands
He's from Joliet, Il. Originally Braidwood,Il.
Dudes are legit..... All can shred
Ty Tabor must have gone down to the crossroads and made a deal with the devil. His guitar skills are incredible. The ultimate axeman.
Yep - pretty sure that deal was made - he really is that good 🤘🤘
They are blessed with a higher power...
went to school with Ty {go Pearl Pirates} and he was incredible back then as well.
No deal with no Devil...the Lord blessed this band❤🎉👍✝️🙌
FEI - The base player Doug Pinic is named in the credits to Pearl Jam 10, his multi sting base and playing style was a big influence.
Every human should have listen this song at least one time in his life. This is GOLD
I love the guitar work and tone, the beat of the song - man, I love everything about this song! Just heard it for my first time yesterday on the radio, and I had to hurry to RUclips to find it. Man, this is a HOT song! The guitar work is genius throughout, and the vocal work is amazing!
Saw these guys at Rockefellers in Houston a million years ago, Gretchen Goes To Nebraska, killer album...great live...bad ass rock band
Underrated is SO right
I was there, too. RIP Rockefeller's...a great room.
That vocal is amazing!
Ty Tabor just absolutely *shreds* that thang, at 2:03 ! 😃 🎸🔥 🤯 🤘
A band that were ahead of their time, so far ahead we still, unfortunately, haven't got there yet. Unique mix of Soul, Funk, Pop and Metal. So glad we got more songs from them.
Awesomeness
Some high school friends and I drove from Lake Charles to Houston to be in this video. What a great day, and these guys were top notch. Very down to earth. I still remember when this video debuted on MTV and we all huddled around to see if we could find ourselves in it. Our three seconds of fame would come at 3:49-3:52. Good times.
マジで洗練された曲
100年後も聴かれてるだろうな
なつかしい 今 聴いても素晴らしい!!
Still one of the sickest songs ever written!
LOVE- THIS- BAND!!!! Since 1991, ive seen king's X over a 130 times and i still continue to see them live and im still blown away!
Love love love this band!
i only appreciate kings x the older i get. one of the most criminally underrated bands of all time.
Saw King's X when they supported ACDC in Glasgow. Bought the album the following day. Superb live act.
One of my all time fav guitar solo!
I saw them at Rockefellers in Houston back in the 80's - great live band. I never understood how they were not HUUUUUGE
love this band. great players, great songs great atitude great people
and great album too!!! GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA is one of my all time favorites!! (still got it on tape)
:)
WOW.
Cheers!
Such a great band and such a great song! Love these guys. They must have written about 20 killer songs over all their albums.
Favorite. Band. Ever.
By far one of the most talented bands to grace the music scene in decades. Every element of their sound is unmistakeable and unmatched in the realm of hard rock today.
Houston's Finest bar band I've ever heard. Live these guys Explode with Sound. Very under rated band.
One of the best bands from the '80s. A lot of talent here.
They are still rockin. Saw them in Dallas recently.
