- Texas Stingray was one of the few new roller coasters to open in North America in 2020. This Great Coasters International wood roller coaster is the tallest, fastest, and longest wood coaster in all of Texas. But is it the best wood coaster in all of Texas? Find out in this review!

When I rode, temperatures started out in the 50s in the morning, but climbed to the 70s by the afternoon. The ride was running noticeably better in the warmer temps, as well as fuller trains. It doesn't top my favorite GCIs, but it's still a very solid and fun coaster, even when it was running a little slower.
That's another good point. The trains won't be full until covid passes.
I just went on this a few weeks ago.. the weather was roughly about 90 and yea it was flying through the course!
I have to try this again in warm weather.
It was running slow when you went. When I went in March of 2020, it was HAULING. Pops of ejector on every hill or sustained floater.
I definitely have to make it back in the warmer months then.
I love how most American enthusiasts are so used to great wooden coasters they just refer to this as average but if this was in the UK it would be top 10 in the country 😂. Great vid as always easily my favourite coaster channel ♥️
Thanks! I actually like Grand National and Big Dipper at Blackpool roughly as much as this coaster. They're rougher but their airtime is stronger.
@@CanobieCoaster what did you think of the Big One? I was kinda underwhelmed but its the tallest coaster I've ever been on so I guess it has that going for it.
also did you get a chance to ride Valhalla?
I really really like you're reviews. You've shot up to my top 3 favorite yt channels. I can't wait to ride this in June
Thank you, I hope you enjoy the ride!
your videos are really well shot/commentated. I hope to see your channel grow. thanks for the hours of entertainment!
I appreciate that!
Just rode this in March on warm day and the ride was crazy and I like the front in the first half and back in the second half. I also can say they built this quickly two months time they went from clearing land to having most of the structure built
I do remember this going up fast.
I also rode Stingray in December. Temperature peaked in the mid 60s, but I believe it was down into the high 40s by the time I was able to ride. All the coasters were closed due to high winds for most of the day, so I was shocked that Stingray ran as fast as it did. As I recall, every hill provided either floater or flojector airtime, so I guess I somehow got faster rides than you did.
That first drop is really well designed to give a bunch of floater without any stomach-dropping sensation, even for people who are sensitive to that sort of thing. GCI did a very good job making a coaster that will appeal to a wide variety of riders.
Texas Stingray didn't run the day prior (due to rain keeping it closed) and it closed at night due to low temps, so I rode it in poor conditions. I was surprised how little air the return run had despite the speed.
I don't understand why the rollercoasters were closed because of high winds, what's the worst that could happen ?
@@ArrowThrills The ride could valley on the course.
@@ArrowThrills I believe they could valley in high winds.
@@toptiercomments840 what do you mean by valley ?
Stingray is an incredible coaster. Go in August. It doesn't let up.
I got great rides last month.
Texas Stingray looks really solid. It looks like it easley makes top 5 GCis and maybe top 3. It looks probably tied or better than Thunderhead and maybe Gold striker but not Mystic Timbers.
I think it's comparable to Thunderhead, especially if I rode it in its weakest form on a cool day.
Yeah those trains look awesome!
They're great!
wish i could ride this great review
Thanks!
The ride looks pretty underrated. It’s 2nd half looks insane
I actually found the second half sort of weak despite the speed.
Wow interesting
some people say it's underwhelming but it looks great to me
Haven’t ridden it, but an 8 seems fitting! It doesn’t look too thrilling...
It was about on par with Thunderhead.
I finally rode it, early afternoon on Sports Bowl Sunday a few weeks ago. Half-train operations, but I still managed 7 rides in a little over an hour. Temps were upper 60s, and it was riding great! The airtime towards the end was better than what you experienced. Once I started holding the lap bar up throughout the ride, I was able to appreciate how good the airtime was. Not having the seatbelts is really nice. I'm not sure where to rank this. GCIs can be temperamental. My rides on Thunderhead in December were the best rides I've had on any GCI, but it was much weaker in 2019. Mystic Timbers has been great for me in the past, but my 2020 rides were very weak with almost no airtime. Texas Stingray far surpasses those Mystic rides, but probably not if all conditions were equal.
After my first couple rides, I still preferred Steel Eel slightly, but after the 4th or 5th ride, there was no doubt that Texas Stingray is my new favorite in the park.
I'll definitely have to give Texas Stingray another try. Considering I experienced it at its worst and still enjoyed it, that's a good sign!
nice roller coaster!
Sure is.
from your footage, I can say for certain the ride is running slower than normal. Its insane on a hot texas night!
I'll have to try it again in summer.
This thing slapped, my new 2nd favorite GCI kicking out thunderhead. Renegade is still my favorite though.
Glad you liked it!
Background music is a little louder than you sometimes, I'd recommend bringing it down a bit in future videos. Still an awesome review! Love how you go break it down soup to nuts!
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to watch out for that in future videos.
I have been on 6 GCI's and I have Texas StingRay 4th. I have GoldStriker, Mystic Timbers, and Thunderhead all well ahead of it. I have Texas StingRay barely ahead of American Thunder and Apocalypse. I enjoyed the first half of Texas StingRay move than the second half.
I have the same GCIs ahead of it as well.
The second half reminds me of the final third of the old Texas Giant.
Never rode the old Texas Giant.
@@CanobieCoaster it was a hoot. Out of control with wild pops of airtime and stupid laterals.
Will try and give you an update on my first rides on this coaster when I visit at the beginning of March! Hoping it'll be in the 60's & 70's temp wise
Fingers crossed!
I'm going beginning/mid March, so I hope so lol
I heard that a new program was developed by GCI and they designed Texas stingray with it, so I think that’s why some of these elements seem a little different from most GCI coasters
That would make sense. I'd love to see more straight drops going forward.
@@CanobieCoaster that and the turns and airtime pops just look different on this compared to the other GCI’s
7:47 The lack of air time after the first drop is always a disappointment on this ride, regardless of temperature. I've ridden Texas Stingray a bunch of times in November/December with temps in the 50's/60's, and also in the heat, as recently as a couple days ago with temps above 90 degrees. The turns are the problem. Almost every time you think you're approaching an air time hill, the ride has a banked turn which kills it. Can't fault the ride for lack of variety - Steel Eel is basically just an air time machine - and it's awesome, but Texas Stingray went all in on turns as the primary ride element after the first drop, and it's just not that fun relative to other ride elements they could have easily incorporated.
Ghost Rider at Knotts is probably the best GCI (if you count their 2015 refurbishment), or Mystic Timbers. Texas Stingray feels more like a mid-tier GCI and the third best wood coaster in Texas (behind Switchback at ZDT's and Boardwalk Bullet at Kemah Boardwalk). Great video though as usual. A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and coaster rankings!
Mystic Timbers is my favorite GCI I've ridden. I'm missing the Asia ones though.
I think Sea World should turn to Gravity Group for more wooden coasters. I think a GG Family Woodie at SWO would be a good fit. I know there is not a lot of wooden coasters in Florida due to the climit but I think the park needs a real family coaster. Super grovers is more of a kids ride and Ice Breaker is more on the thrill side but something like Kentucky Flyer might do good. Besides it will be the first woodie at the park finally. What do you think?
I'd love to see more of the small Gravity Group woodies. They're fun for all ages and have a low height restriction.
This is just one spot above Mystic Timbers for me, making it my favorite GCI
I prefer Mystic Timbers to this. The airtime is more consistent start to finish and I love Mystic's setting.
@@CanobieCoaster I prefer Mystic Timbers to Prowler for similar reasons being I like the setting and theming on Mystic Timbers much more than the cleared woods setting of prowler.
One time I heard a screech sound when I rode the coaster it was at the return leg.
Odd
Yeah it is odd but it was the wheels.
I’m new to coasters and I’m going to sea world soon and I’ve been on Wave Breaker. Would you recommend this next or should I go to steel eel or great white?
I'd say to try Journey to Atlantis or Catapult Falls next to get used to drops.
@@CanobieCoaster ok thanks I’ve tried catapult (which is awesome) and I really want to do Journey to Atlantis but it’s always broken :(
cant wait for rmc texas stingray in 2038 :P
another great and informative review !
Thank you! I can't wait for Iron Stingray haha.
I wonder if they ride is better than Mystic Timbers ?
I much prefer Mystic Timbers. Better airtime and better setting.
seems like a mid-tier GCI, but I've only ridden the ones at Hershey so it's hard to compare. Mystic Timbers still looks the best to me
The Hershey ones have much slower pacing compared to newer ones.
@@CanobieCoaster yeah and no airtime, but at least lightning racer races
And the last time I got 0.1 seconds of airtime on Texas Stingray
Wow that's unfortunate. I had way more airtime than that.
Yeah but can it run doom
What?
I feel like American enthusiasts get very defensive if you say their home parks suck
A lot of people (not just in the US) take pride in their home park.
You forgot Oscar's Wacky Taxi
With regards to what?
I love the straight drop. The curved GCI drops just aren't very impressive to me.
The one exception is Gold Striker's.
The curve drops make the ride more intense just my opinion.
@@ArrowThrills They definitely can give laterals (like the one on Mystic Timbers), but I prefer the airtime of the straight drop.
In my opinion it's not as good as mystic timbers. It is still my 2nd fav though.
I prefer Mystic Timbers too.
Wood coaster is easily the best gci imo its not even close
That one is atop my bucket list.
Python in Bamboo Forest needs to be in the discussion.
@@alantrotter2077 no way its even close to wood coaster
@@seansanders294 Thinking back to Canada Coaster Fan's videos he would have had it in a similar range so I think you stance is a bit over the top.
What's is wood coaster ?
Hi
Hi!
It doesn’t just play country music
That's all it played for me in the fall.
@@CanobieCoaster it plays mostly country but sometimes there is Mexican music and normal music
its too bad how smooth their profiling is, it’s all weak airtime.
There are a few strong hills peppered in.
@@CanobieCoaster i get it, and i bet it’ll be fun. i just think that’s just not enough to be up to the level. if you’re gonna call yourself “great coasters” they’d better not dissapoint. lol.
Imagine turning all the wooden coasters of Kings Island into rmc hybrids.
They'd be RMC's number one customer!
No. Mystic Timbers is the best GCI because of its airtime and laterals.
I prefer that one as well.
I feel like this is one of the worst GCIs. I was pretty disappointed with it honestly. Still a good ride, but not amazing
I liked it, especially on a warmer day.
