I am an American and I love your "accent" and manner of presentation. I have purchased guitars based on your suggestions such a new Epiphone SC Custom. I like it. It plays really well. Much better upper fret access than a lot of other guitars. My next purchase will be an Epiphone SG with P90's. I just cant see paying more for a Gibson that isn't a huge improvement over the new Epiphones. Thank you again.

The wide-thin body of an SG resonates better than the single-cuts, which translates to the pickups, and the neck pickup is moved up a bit from the 24th fret nodal point so the neck-joint won't be too thin, and which improves the neck pickup's tone imo (some will disagree).

Yep. SG's all the way. I have never found a strat I've bonded with. I thought Les Paul's were the pinnacle, but then I got an SG...and fell in love. Just great guitars.
What I really came here to say though was Thank you Colin for taking the time and trouble to gift us these videos. It is so great hearing your stories, seeing your guitars, listening to your playing and appreciating your thoughts and opinions on all things guitar. I love your laid back conversational delivery. It's like hanging out with an old friend and fellow guitar nut.

Hi Colin! I absolutely love your SG collection! You've got some wonderful pieces. I share your preference for an SG over a Les Paul. I like LPs just fine, but when you find a really good SG it's just magic. These last two videos you posted have a special relevance for me because I just had a headstock on an SG that I love very much repaired. I've written about it several times here in the comments already and I've had it back for a few weeks now. However, it's only recently that I've had the chance to give it the really good setup. The kind where everything is exactly perfect the way I like it. Action, pu height, intonation, truss rod, etc. Now that it's exactly to my liking, playing this SG is just a transcendent experience.
I remember writing in the comments here about this guitar when I broke it. You gave me an encouraging message about how the guitar will come back stronger than before. Well, it absolutely did! It even plays better than before. I had a guy do some work on the nut many years back and I think that he went a little too far filing the nut on the high side. Not bad, but the guitar's tone would thin out a little on the high E side. Again, not bad but noticeable when compared to other guitars. SGs often do this a little and I thought that it was just something inherent to the design of the guitar. With this repair I had a new nut put on and it has eliminated this problem entirely. The entire fretboard is now one big sweet spot. This was and still is the crown jewel in my guitar collection and to have it back even better than before makes me want to jump up and down with happiness. What a f***ing guitar! Also, the headstock repair was done so well that only a trained eye who knows exactly what they're looking for could guess that there has been work done in that area. I would still disclose the fact that it is repaired if I should ever sell it of course. However, I have no plans to part with this thing. It's special.
Is it possible for a guitar review to be emotional? I suppose so. Because of timing and circumstance, this one was for me. I've had this guitar for 2 decades now and I thought I'd ruined it. Instead, it plays and sounds better than ever.
I'm sorry if that was too long. I just wanted to share that with a fellow SG lover.
    Cheers Colin! ✌

I have quite a few guitars, but I’ve never owned and SG. However one with P90s, that’s tempting. I think the reason I never bought a Gibson SG is that a guitarist in an early band I was in always had trouble keeping it in tune. (that was in the 70s). We didn’t have those problems at the times with Les Pauls and Fenders. There are always guitars that call to you. Out of a couple dozen I have collected in 5 decades, I rotate between 3 guitars. One, is a simple les Paul with p90s. Nothing special, it just calls me. Love it.

None of the anxiety associated with bringing one of the Les Paul’s out of safety of being secure in the case. The SG is an expression machine, quite unique in its voice and inspirational abilities. Hard to say which is best above all, but the SG is absolutely a very strong contender for GOAT ✌️🫶

@@QuantumGamingUploads I disagree, 3.5 K guitars are no better that sub 1K ones , either can be amazing or total dogs, but high end stuff is mainly for rich people to waste money on and show off with

    • @QuantumGamingUploads
      @QuantumGamingUploads Год назад +1

@@frankcarter6427 you forget those sub £1k may turn out to be terrible as well so it really depends on the guitar itself when you pick it up and you feel and pleased from the sound that's for you. No £1k guitar can be perfect or worth it either so its an individual one depending on the guitar. I had one recent purchase a Vintage make V52 Relic guitar. That was £499. That guitar was not even worth £80 in my opinion while a Sire T3 that was £360 was 100× better than that. Everything was right about it. You buy £3500 as you saved for a special one to pad yourself in the back call it eye pleaser or just because you have to have it. Its more than just the price sometimes behind a guitar. I always wanted a Custom Tele based on the James Burton Pink Paisley. I can find a Japanese one of those for £1500 but it wouldn't be the same. Great and probably amazing ( even be better overall ) but on the back of your mind you just know that isn't the same. This guitar hobby is funny in many ways so no point in disagreeing there. £3.5k guitar ain't for rich people either. Rich people buy £20k guitars. £3.5K guitar is when you save up for a year or two for it.

When I started buying guitars again in 2014 (I hadn't had a decent guitar since the mid '80s) I generally ignored SGs. In 2019 I became interested by the Specials. I passed on a pair in Pelham Blue but I had to take home one in Sparking Vintage Burgundy. I got $100 off but in 2019 prices hadn't been jacked yet.
I have to say, it's a case queen. It's just... too pretty and I worry about denting or scratching it. I don't have that fear with any of the other guitars I bought new or NOS. Naturally, I love the sound of its P-90s and I have several other guitars with them.
I look forward to seeing more of your collection. I have 16 electrics so far, as well as three basses and two acoustics. I buy used, discontinued and heavily discounted wherever possible.

Loved the last two videos- I got my 2003 sg standard in Ebony around 10 years ago now- 300 quid ebay offer after nobody bought it- left handed with a headstock repair. At first - I was worried I'd bought a chibson it seemed so cheap. It also had one broken tuner (the replacement was a knock off kluxon thing that didnt hold tune. I never played it much till 2017- I decided that it would be the one I'd take to denmark with me when i moved there for my master's degree- seeing as how it came with a case and it already had a broken neck. I thought I'd made a dreadful mistake when i say the standard gibson case on the baggage carousel- but it was fine. I don't think I'd do it again though. my first week in denmark I took it into a shop because I wanted to try it with an amp I was interested in. the guy goes into the back and brings out a spare of the correct gibson deluxe tuner and installs it for me. wouldn't take any money for it either- so i bought a set of strings out of embarrasment. I had held off buying one because i could only find full sets. It was the catalyst that led me to actually binding with the guitar- and it was the only thing I had to play for two years during Covid, I feel like it's my deluxe guitar- bound neck- batwing guard (I don't like the original short guards, I think because I associate them more with the cheaper copies you got in the early 2000s- I think I prefer your late 60s jr for this reason) and that kinda soft nitro feel. It's in storage now while I'm working in Argentina- I'm gassing to be reunited with it.
sorry for the essay, I'm experiencing nostalSGia.

I have a bunch too. Bought my first in about '93, a new TV Yellow Special. Played a ton of shows with it. It cracked at the input jack in '00. The latest from a few months ago is a '16 P90 Standard. Love it.

Very Cool, Thankyou. Such an awesome Collection. I have Recently picked up an Epiphone black SG 'Standard' (I think) on the used market for bargain price $100- Australian with case. (That is almost Free in UK and USA money, lol) OMG, I instantly fell in love with this guitar and it has fast become one of my favorite guitars. Was never really a fan of SG's ...... Until I played a good one. WOW. Now I get it. Cheers

All i can do is give you a nod in approval sir.
My first guitar was a 2002 Epiphone vintage g400, which i still have 20 years later. And i also like my Gibson SG std 61 though i wish the neck was a little bigger like on my SG tribute. All have been modded to some extent. Custombuckers with A5 magnets are in the std 61 now. slightly less aggressive as the Burstbucker 61 that came standard and a bit more clarity and articulation.
My tribute has got a Gibson P94T in the neck and a Lollar novel 90 in the bridge. Great combo! The neck is quite bright and articulate with the A5 magnet in the P94T and the bridge is clear and aggressive sounding with a bit of warmth, not glassy sounding. Probably because the Lollar has an A2 magnet.
    Love them

As an American, I got very confused when you said “stinks of f*gs.” It wasn’t until you said it obviously belonged to a heavy smoker that I was like “Oh yeah, that’s just what they call cigarettes over there”

As you mentioned in a previous video, in the grand scheme of things we as guitar players are quite niche, which makes it great to be such a diverse bunch of people.
Have never once ever heard a bad sounding SG, in fact they all sound bloody great, so why is it they do nothing for me, either buying, playing or collecting wise....
One of the great mysteries of life I guess 🤔
    Yet another cracking video Colin.

My first guitar was a Hondo Les Paul lawsuit, and i loved that thing… took me 44 years to get my first LP, and i HATE the pickups! I’ve got some Duncan P-90’s that fit humbucker routes, and some left handed pots (because Gibson DO NOT use lefty pots on their guitars, so the volume is opposite of all my other guitars!!) to put into it… I’m just so lazy! I just want to write, record, and mix! Not be a guitar tech! Your channel has definitely prompted me to dive more into working on my own instruments! No more taking them to the local shop for setups
    Thank you for your videos!

SGs are it, yeah?Jrs, Standards, Specials, P90s, humbuckers- they all call to me! I have quite a few myself. It was Brian James of The Damned that did it for me. I saw The Damned on the box and that was it! I had to have one. Fortunately, my dad was a Gibson cultist and when I showed him what I wanted, he took me around guitar shops one Saturday and we found a used SG Jr! (never knew the year, but it was most likely a '65) When I asked what I was supposed to do about an amp, he said "save up and buy one". So for the first couple of months I had it, I played through my tape deck into my stereo and borrowed a friend's amp when we started a band. I wish someone made a distortion pedal that sounded like that tape deck!
Years later, I was lucky enough to open for Brian James' then current band (Lords Of The New Church) and jam with him. Playing those Damned songs with the guy that wrote them on the guitar he inspired me to play was pretty fucking surreal!
    Love the show, Col!

    nice collection brother!
i picked up a 2003 squier strat yesterday dirt cheap with intensions of replacing my "sunflower" sunburst 2013 model...which dont feel as good to me as the 03...
ill install the scratchplate and all the bits from the 03 into the 13 and then sell the sunburst model...then ill do a hh configuration on the blue 03 that im keeping...and ill wire it up to try to capture the peter green tone...that "greenie maye" model les paul clone has the PG tone down to a T! might sound bonkers but as i was testing it i felt a "presence" with me...esp as i played it in the "out of phase" position...maybe i had a special visitor? if so i hope he approved lol!
