First off-road trail I ever did was Engineer and Imogene and pass. Now I go on any trail and I’m like, “Yeah, meh.” Kind of ruined it for me! I rented a Jeep in Ouray and they said I couldn’t take it over Black Bear. Since it was my first time in a Jeep I was ok with that. But now I’ve got to go back and do it!
America is an AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL country. Glad to hear that the South African product is well used in the US. Another amazing product from South Africa 🇿🇦 is a " driepoot potjie ". I got mine from a company in Texas. That was/ is the best pot we use in South Africa to cook food in the wild. Greetings from Canada.
Superb video! Yes, Black Bear raw footage. When my Bronco Badlands arrives, Black Bear here I come! Will enjoy trying out the Bronco "Trail Turn Assist" on the switchbacks.
Aww thanks for the shoutout at 12:11 lol I need to get my blazer up and going and hit some trails before they all get closed and turned into hiking trails.
Yeah man, definitely put the Black Bear footage up! I miss living out in Mt. Crested Butte "crusty butt" soooo badly, and went to Telluride a ton and love Bridal Falls and Black Bear. I'm moving back out after thanksgiving so I can't wait to get back out on the trails and go camping and riding! You make some really great videos and take good pics too. I cant't wait to get back out there with my camera too. Hopefully I'll see ya out there one day. Take care man and be safe out there!
My wife is going to kill me. I keep buying your merch & stuff you recommend like vertex pants, your LLOD cobra belts etc. 😂😂😂 Love your vids. Keep up the good work!
Great video Mike. Love the format and really don't mind the segmentation as long as we get quality content. Your stuff is spot on so I'm sure its gonna rock. And this was a good vid. Cant wait to see the rig walk arounds, always a hit.
Finally! Hahahaa. I loved that pass! I'm going to do it again next July with all my Tacoma mods in place. I will admit you did one hell of a job on the tight switchback. It took me 2 backups to do it. In my defense, I had the trail all to myself that day. It was raining, hailing and I was solo with no spotter. And I'm a Floridian / flatlander with very little mountain experience. Very cool video! And YES, do a raw footage video!!!
i did black bear imogene and all the other trails the same weekend/Week!!! i believe we did imogene the day before this day and it was open (it was the day before the smoke came in) but alot of locals thought it was close, might have lucked out and it might have opened that day or closed after we did it. i got to scratch off all those trails on my bucket list! the scenery was breath taking! also was got caught at the top of engineer pass when that hail storm/front came through! it was gnarly!
Im at the 7:29 mark of the vid. I am looking forward to future videos of these AEVs. I am a taco guy. So I do not know much about the AEVs, And honestly this is the 1st time I've ever heard of the phrase AEV. So looking forward to it
It was nice to see Black Bear Pass again. Haven't been over it since early 1980's in my CJ5. Just seem not quite as rough though, but video probably doesn't do it justice. Great adventure though. Can't wait to see the others.
Loved this video, man. I imagine a lot of people are living vicariously through your awesome adventures like me. I loved seeing everyone's rig & setup. The footage was amazing & very well produced as always! I would definitely be interested in the raw footage. Looking forward to parts 2-4! Keep up the excellent work, my friend. 👊🔥
Great videos man I'm new to overlanding and your channel. Your videos have helped me choose the direction I want to go with my truck (19 tacoma off road) would like to see some multi day trips from you if possible.
AJ got some great shots, as per usual! There's nothing like a truly gifted photographer. Beautiful scenery, even when masked by smoke. I pro.ise your followers would have watched its entirety even without the fast forwarding. Just a note FWIW. Stay safe, Mike, and keep the footage coming. And yes, like ODB, we like it raw. Post it!
Great video! A lot of us in the town (telluride) will do back bear once then call it good. Mainly due to all the accidents we see every month on it. We just had a rollover that went down from the first switchback to the bottom. Anyways, good job on conquering it!
13:53 in is the spot that you can find video of people flipping their rigs on the trail. Hey congrats on the KC Hilites video, I hope it comes with an endless R&D supply for the future.
I have a Jeep Wrangler XLT lifted with mickey thompsons but now I’m into minimal overlander. So i bought a Toyota CHR and 12 dollars to fill up is awesome
Mostly from your channel the (now) wife and I have a trd pro 4Runner and we’re planning a trip to Utah and Colorado from Oregon. Keep up the videos. Especially with AJ
Driving off-road rough mountain roads is thrilling and touching to me. It's so great. I commend you. I subscribe to you. Thank you. Fighting. From South Korean RUclipsr Woongkham.💝💝💝👍👍👍
Regarding your radio setup :: Get just about any of the cheap Beofeng radios. Most of them will do frs, gmrs, and others along with at least 2m ham and some also 440 ham. Many also are dual tuner so you can have frs/gmrs on one tuner and ham on the other tuner so you can talk to all the party on frs/gmrs and any other hams with you on ham. that way you dont have to do it the way you described which is kinda grey-area-ish. I have all 3 of my hts, 2 beofeng and 1 kenwood configured with all the frs, gmrs, and murs channels in addition to all the ham simplex, local repeaters, local weather radio, and of course, local public service frequencies.
Black bear and Imogene are cool for sure, but there is soooo much more to see and do in the San Juans. Lived in Silverton for 13 years and rarely went to those two because of the traffic jams. And that was twenty years ago. Now it seems all the off-road/overlander youtubers have to go there. You should definitely explore more around Silverton. Liked the GoPro footage from the roof 👍
Chris Mattson Those are all good. Stony pass was always a favorite. Drops down to Creede and can connect via pavement to Lake City and then back to Cinnamon and Engineer pass. Lost’s of smaller loops like Hurricane pass, Picayune gulch, Corkscrew over to Ironton, etc. Don’t get me wrong, Black Bear and Imogene are awesome, they just tend to be busy and there is so much more to see. However, it’s been 7 yrs sine I left SW Co and I’ve spent little time in the backcountry the two times I’ve been back, so I’m not current on the trails, though I doubt little has changed.
Bro, AJ gets a turn with all “The Girls of Overland” aka Rigs. I dig it as he is the one guy at the camp fire who can truly provide real input for guys looking to get a new rig as he has tried them all. Side note...can anyone chime in on how difficult Black bear pass is and would they recommend I drive it with my fully built 2015 Tacoma or fully built ‘88 4rnr 3.4 swapped and S/C. Prefer my ‘88 but worried about turning radius and break fade in my ‘88(I did perform a brake master upgrade to 1”).
Where was base camp? We were camping on Engineer Pass at the same time. Just past the single lane section of the highway is a turn off to start Engineer. We were about 10 minutes after that turn off just off the trail. TONS of traffic on the trails that weekend, being Labor Day. Your Black Bear run must've been Monday. It was clear as could be Friday-Sunday and when we headed home Monday it was all kinds of smokey. We actually ran Imogene the whole way on Saturday. Evidently when we were on it, someone up in front of us (but not with us) had winched a rock out of the way to unofficially "open" it. We didn't know that and went on through. They were apparently working on some of the small wood bridges on the trail which were always pretty sketchy. So we ran Imogene from Telluride all the way back to Ouray.
Yeah we hit BB on Monday, as well as Imogene. People in the town said Imogene was closed on the Telluride side, so we drove around and hit it from the Ouray side. At the top though we bumped into some people that came from telluride and just kinda shrugged and said something along the lines of "Eh, we just drove around the road closed sign", haha.
@@LastLineOfDefense Hey we drive off road vehicles. It's in our nature to want to find out why a road is closed! Looking forward to the rest of the videos from the weekend.
Damn! I was up in Ouray and Lake City on Labor Day weekend. Did Mineral Creek-Engineer Pass a couple days before you did. Would've loved to run across you on a trail! We got outta there before the crazy weather, though.
Ps. I can’t wait too start doing this. Gotta pay off snap on first before doing overland driving for fun. It’s expensive. But good god the sights. The fun. The memories. Money is out of the question then for all that. Only live once. Fuck it lol.
Love the videos !!! Keep them coming!! I see you have a solar panel from Cascadia . I was curious how that was working for you? Curious what the long term results are. Any chance you will show how it performs? , and How it benefits in overlanding? Thank you for your time
Mike, what is the black panel on the hood? Solar? Great video Sir. Now I know I can't do the pass into Telluride while towing my Mission Overland Summit trailer. lol
I was there at the same time almost, I arrived in Ouray the Wednesday after Labor Day when it had already snowed. A lot was closed so I done both Yankee Boy and Governors Basin.
I'd love to see the raw footage from black bear pass. Your videos are some of the best out there. Keep it up!
Black Bear Pass & Imogene is on the dream bucket list! Let's see that raw footage!
They're definitely worth doing!

19:45 is so so so good, what a photo! Raw Black Bear would be really cool. Thanks Mike.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome trip, that view on that right switchback was insane!
Great video ! I spent the summer working in Silverton so I wheeled all the trails in the area including BB Pass a couple times. Best summer ever😎.

Haha never had any fears of it - having said that, it was honestly less sketch than a lot of people lead on.
Raw footage of Blackbear sounds great
I just drove 30 hours from new England to come overland out here. Hoping to see these trails tomorrow
