I know that this is a joke but the reason that USA participated the war was because they did not want Vietnam to spread communism in south east asia. But really Vietnam just wanted to reunify they even tried to to get help from USA but they did not accept due to USA low morale and Vietnam at the time was not even a country.

Edit: Fix the number a little bit: its South Korea lost 200 (could be higher or lower) mercenaries and Vietnam lost about 20 to 30 soldiers, but still South Korea suffered a lot more than Vietnam.
