- The MK18 is one of the most recognizable firearms in the world. Made popular by SOCOM, Garand Thumb, and Trexarms. But does it live up to the hype? After 10 years of civilian use and about 10 different setups, here are my thoughts on how I tuned my pistol, set it up for 50 - 300 yard shooting, and started to transition it to a dedicated Night Vision gun.

Seeing that this is a pistol, have you had anyone bring up the legalities about the “vertical” bcm foregrip ? Looking at getting one for my mk18 but i am concerned about the legality of it. I know the grip itself is not actually 90 degree and i have also heard if your weapon is over 26 inches and classified as a pistol you can put a vertical grip on it- supposedly. What would you say about it ?
@@shawnnystrom6297 this is an AOW, so it’s 100% legal. That said, I’ve had a cert grip in there for 10 years and not one single person has ever mentioned a word about it. But I have never had a run in with any ATF agents (thank god 😂)
As far as the angle is concerned, I heard the same as you. It’s not 90 degrees, and was clarified in an opinion letter from ATF.
If you concerned about it, just spend the $200 for the piece if mind and SBR it if you can.
I love my DD MK18 upper. However, DD refused to ship me an upper to California. Then they refused to sell it to me because my billing address is California. To be clear, an upper isn’t in any way illegal in California. Thankfully Brownells wanted my money shipped it right out. DD great products but deserve their Fed rep.

I am also in CA and they shipped and replaced everything as described in the video, no questions asked. This was in 2021 I believe.

Everything after 2018 has the smaller gas port size. With a vltor a5 and the a5h1 or BCM MK2 buffer tube with w/ the mod 1 T0 runs smooth af. If your running suppressed, step up the buffer weight a bit and you should be golden!
Fantastic video man! I echo your findings on the 0.70 mk18 gas port with a vltor a5 h1. Very soft and rivals or exceeds my triarc 12.5. Keep up the content! Cheers

I really like my DDM4V7. I put an ACOG on with with a trijicon rmr on top front side. Surefire scout light w/pressure pad. Bcm Gunfighter stock. And a super annoying magpul quick attach noisy sling. Not really a fan of those QD things. Then strangely I started spending my life’s savings buying every piece of gear I can wear, carry , and tow behind a truck. So since then I purchased a 20 ton military truck to pull all that. 😆

The m4v7 is a solid solid rifle. Love my acogs as well. An ta31f was the first optic I ever bought. Had to let it go to get into the NVG game unfortunately.
The half ton is an excellent start. We need to go halfzies in an MRAP!

With the vltora5 system in place, have you noticed an improvement in parts breakage/replacement?
I had about 5k rounds through the upper with the larger .084 sized gas port and the vltor a5. It had some pretty severe wear on the cam pin.
I sent the upper back to DD and they swapped the entire upper besides the ris II for the .070 gas port size.
That upper has had about 7k rounds on it now and the wear isnt even close to the previous .084 gas port size upper.
Have had zero issues with the upper and the wear seems to be standard.

Hi, i have the same exact set up, just wondering can i put the foregrip on like you or do i need some kind of papers? I know its angled and short. But doesnt it has any standard to lean on?

Mine is a form 1 self made AOW which allows vert grips on pistols. However….
There is some ATF letter floating around that defines a vertical grip is a 90 degree angle. The bcm is not 90 degrees so not a “vertical grip”

@@LARPeratorsAnonymous thanks. I'll keep it simple. Eotech with dcr reticle and g45. Both on unity risers. Some light and done. Since I don't have nods, there is no sense to add lasers and stuff to it.

Great video man. DD's customer service is amazing. I am running a green spring with a BCM MK2 T0 buffer (same as A5) in my mk18 .070 port size and it shoots extremely soft with 3:30-4:00 ejection using full power 5.56. Couldn't be more happy with it.

....one of my favorite companies is Daniel Defense. That whole thing with Marty Daniel supporting a bill that actually disarmed some former military civilians was a big misunderstanding with the CEO of Daniel Defense. He apologized publicly and everything. I own a complete mk18 and also a DDM4V7 Pro and love em.
Don't forget how Marty made supportive comments about the ATF during a congressional testimony. Kind of small PP energy.
But the mk18 nostalgia is king!

Just go to your local gun store and buy one. Pistols you should take home with you that day, or form 4 and waiting a few weeks or days (as of 5/1/24), and pick up once cleared.

It can, but listening to dudes like Aaron from Sage Dynamics with way more experience and already have two ways to aim (active & passive), there is no need to irons. But to each their own!
I’m looking at Vltor a5 for my 10.3 mk18 their standard spring and h2 thoughts?
Im running a Springco Green spring, and A5h1.
I tried the A5H2 and it would not cycle steel case (which I don't shoot much of), and was on the bleeding edge of reliability with pmc bronze, so I moved to an H1 and its been great!

Barrel and Hatchet did a great video on their mk18 RIS III recently and used an RC2 and switched to Huxowrks and said it changed the whole feel of the gun, I a good way!

I tried the a5h2 on the newer gas port size mk18 (post 2016 model) and it wouldn’t run steel case or pmc reliably. Short stroking.
