I used to work for a company in the scottish highlands owned by Ian Anderson. . A more down to earth fella you could not meet. Not that he was there often in the 5yrs i was there, Daltery has been there also, when he had his trout farm on the black isle.
It's nice to see a rock musician who is as articulate as Anderson. You see classical music instrumentalists who are thoughtful and articulate but I've learned not to expect much from rockers. Anderson has never indulged in excesses of any sort outside of his performances and as a result he's aged well.
I remember the first time I heard him in interview, Radio two I think probably about fifteen years ago and I really looked forward to it but almost from the moment that the interview kicked off it took a negative path. Looking back it was obvious that the DJ clearly wasn't an Ian Anderson fan and didn't understand tull music so proceeded to ask feeble questions and the whole chemistry of the interview went wrong. All I learned from that interview was that Anderson Liked cats and grew his own chillies.
I don't think I'd want him for a roomate, but he has determined his own course in the music world for the last 40 years. And he is a very talented musician, he has the right to be a little quirky same as any of us.
Perhaps, but then again, he said 'intellectual'. Let's just appreciate the innovations they did, and call it good explorative music. Intellectual or pedestrian poets of the streets. I find them to be intellectual, in a natural sense. As bards of thought, tricking people along and musing, while at the same time being absolutely serious musicians and creators of concepts and great lyric set to music. At any rate, I can understand the awkwardness in calling music such terms - The man is great.
he's a lovely man, intelligent, articulate, down to earth. surprised that he speaks like a proper country gent, whilst his singing voice is heavily tinged with a celtic lilt! he really can talk too!? x
He didn't say that though. They don't focus on being cerebral. But they are very intellectual, in how they use language and big structures, aphorisms and storytelling - And so on. That's the difference between Intellectual and Intelligent, Intellectual merely means that they like being gentle with ideas, expanding them, presenting and suggesting... You know, playing with the intellect. That doesn't mean that other music might be heavier on the mind and more 'intelligent' musically or so.
Not to defend the Hall of Fame, but didn't they induct Zappa posthumously? Maybe they were trying to take a stab at other prog musicians by inducting the guy who not only was dead, but who clearly would have been indifferent if not antagonistic towards the idea.
If you don't like Jethro Tull don't worry, it's considered to be intellectual rock so it's not your falut... you can just stick to your simple minded music instead of something that's to complex for you to comprehend.
I've always been in utter awe of this man's talent---ever since '68 and the "This Was" Lp
Every word that's coming out of his mouth can't be seen coming. Brilliant musician and human being.
a real king of all rock and roll
he what makes this country great...i think
Ian always seemed to me sincere, hard-working, uncompromising, unapplogetic, strange yet very brilliant. One hell of a musician, man.
But.....I learn something new everytime I hear him!
I saw Tull on the rubbing elbows tour @ the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. And I saw them again last year. Anderson still rules and Tull still rules.

Ian is such a real person. He seems very approachable. If only, eh. What a cool guy.
YOU THE BEST,,AND THAS ITS

He's a very cute handsome man. I much like him. :)
He's actually relatively trim and fit for a man in his mid to late 50s. We should all be in such good condition.
excellent video---5*****
@David89Anderson I agree a 100% , what a inside information!
a fellow buffalonian here. cool.
@nicforte well said
He's not "fat", he's got a stature like most blokes of this age. But very well-spoken and a very good interviee.
I agree, he really is in his own class, isn't he?
This is Ian Anderson?! In 2003!! Apart from a little hair loss he hasn't aged at all!!
i like the guy dont get me wrong,, but he looks like mr mannering {dads army}.,.,.,..,no ?.

@rohmer50
he is also extremely handsome.. have ALWAYS thought so.
I didn't get that at all from this interview. He just said he preferred questions from women and that he didn't like people picking on his band.
You mean Crest of a Knave.
@bobgee1999
Tell me .. what in your opinion ís a real intellectual?
He never was a freak really. He used to sack band member for drug use, and he was really quite anti-hippie.

@David89Anderson
i simply could not have said it better my self. my last name is also anderson.
Yes, Ian is quite intelligent, but also a mite loquacious perhaps. ;-)
Intelligent rock!? LOL I love Tull music but calling it intelligent rock is a bit of a stretch!
I think you need to get your coat, and leave.
hahahahahaha
