You didn't state which neighborhood your apartment is located so I can only guess that it's near Long Island City, just across East River from Manhattan. That's definitely an advantage to many people. Donald Trump was wishing that he would make it across the river to become a big "somebody" in glitzy Manhattan. It's actually a pretty good price for a place like that. The only concern I have is how reliable your apartment mate is in paying the rent because you don't want to solve a major financial problem at the same time when you have to finish up your final projects to be able to receive your professional degree.
@@solconcordia4315 unreliable apartment mates is a legitimate point. My niece had roommates who bailed and left her with their share of the rent, luckily she got it resolved, but it was a Hassle
The reason Dorm living is more expensive is because private universities are running dog capitalist only concerned with grubbing money from students who have no choice but to pay for their halfway house style accommodations.
$3000 per month for a two bedroom apartment of that quality is good in NYC. In North Carolina, I had a two bedroom apartment for $1465 until recently. There are probably small towns and rural areas where you could rent for$1100 or less.
I love how confident and comfortable you have become with the city in such a short amount of time. As someone who was born and raised there, I look forward to your video on the best neighborhoods!
That was a fun quick tour, nice and tidy too! Always enjoy the secret videos too. Can't see how you can afford a place on your own, so you might have to share.
When I lived in NY in 2013/14 I rented a small room for $600. It was a lot, but didn't feel that crazy as it would feel nowadays with the current exchange rate. The rule was if I leave - I had to find another person to rent it for me. Luckaly it wasn't hard to find the one who would replace you in this subleasing. Basically it was some Russian guy who rented the whole 3 rooms apartment and he rented other 2 rooms. To find the room from the host was impossible. When they asked me when I came and how much money I have they hung up the call immediatly 😂

Welcome to my neighborhood. St. John's is a good university and easily accessible by bus and subway to Manhattan. There is even an Express bus that runs along Union Tpke. that takes you into the city on coach buses.
I hope that you have found a place to store all of the things that you have bought in America, such as the Christmas lights and the bedding. It would be discouraging to need to rebuy all of that stuff next term unless you can sell them at a good price before you go.
Very interesting video. I hope you make the video of your best places in NYC. It is so hard to make ends meet and doubly so as a foreign student in USA. I wish you best of luck on your summer program and congratulations for winning the competition and for finishing your first year!
WOW Dari - I knew it was going to be a bit expensive - NOT nearly impossible 🤯 The amount of paperwork needed just to rent an apartment is mind-boggling, especially for foreign students. I am glad you found one, and 1,300$ is a reasonable price, 3,000$ is a bit pricey, but since the going rate for most decent apartments is about 2,000, 3,000 for a New York apartment is a great deal given the location. I pay $1300 for a 2 bedroom house with 2 car garage and laundry. Also have dishwasher. Backyard and front yard. No roommates so it's the total price. I brought the house 12 years ago when prices and rates were lower. Now it would cost a lot more for the same place at today's prices.

I would definitely try to do internships for your school for real world experience. I did one for my television production course. Trust me you really don’t know anything until you actually do it. Every big company does a few every year. I know the stock exchange does them, financial institutions do it. Think about it as real world experience really can’t help. During the summer travel around to different places and talk to businesses there to gain information about how to run businesses and how they started. There’s a new lounge in Orlando that opened six months ago that was started by someone with no business experience but learned on the fly. That place now has a six month wait list and lines out the door. It’s easy to start a business but hard to keep it going. He had to learn what it takes to keep it open. He’s changing up the place already to keep up with trends. He’s doing what he can like everyone else. I changed up my restaurant menu a bit every few months to keep up with food trends just adding a dish or changing a dish or two. It’s hard but it’s working somehow.
It's actually a fairly good deal, in my opinion, assuming that it's near Long Island City. I'm guessing that it's near there because she can walk so much in a day. How much is real estate worth ? Neighborhood, neighborhood, and neighborhood.
I remember searching for a brownstone apt in ideal Manhattan (UPW at W. 77th). It took 3-months. I finally bypassed the crazy brokers and met a landlord. He looked me in the eye and said “you’re in”. Didn’t ask for credit, income, criminal etc. So appearance that you refer to is important. I rented for 5-years and never missed a rent payment or bothered him. When I told him I was moving out, he almost begged me to stay, e.g., “I’ll given you any apt in any of my buildings”, etc. And almost everyday when I’d went out, I’d meet a different celebrity. Funny & cool.
"First Month, Last Month, and Security Deposit" - New Englanders (and NYC is too close to New England) like their rent fees. Don't forget to pick up the Security Deposit, which is refundable, traditionally at the end of a rental (provided they have not argued for keeping some of it due to damage, but then that becomes a small claims court issue - like "Judge Judy"). I have seen enough of different Russians' videos to know they pay "realtor fees," but I'm guessing that this is not refundable. Don't miss out on money due to an assumption that it is the "same thing" you are used to!
Usually here, a property owner hires an agency to rent and manage apartments if they don't do this for themselves. So, you do not have to pay this fee, though this agency might advertise other properties they manage, acting a lot like a realtor.
In my zip code, the rental agent takes a standardized fee from the apt owner, a percentage like 10% of the monthly rent every month. The renter never pays this 'fee' However, If you've followed dasha in europe, the rental agent there take the equivalent of a month's rent from the renter as their commission for renting the apt, or I guess whatever rate they make up. That's not refundable unlike the deposit. The law In my state is if the deposit is wrongfully retained upon moving out, the renter is entitled to treble damages.
You got an expensive place, but then it had no chickens, no noise, no thieves and no water dripping from the place above 😉 For good places you will always have to pay good money.

If you want something good try ethnic enclaves. For Russians it’s always around Brighton beach towards little Odessa. That’s where the majority of Russians live still. Hit the Chinatowns for different types of Chinese as we are all different. The area around Macys has the best koreatown. Little Italy manhattan is ok but it’s lost its charm but queens is like Italy as they still speak true Italian and serve mostly Italian customers.
Correct. Ownership if managed well can provide financial security. I rented an apartment or two for years and suddenly the rent shot up greatly. What do you think I got for my *great insight* in choosing such a great apartment to rent at such a low price ? A tripled rent bill ! Landlords and landladies get the asset appreciation. The renters get the huge rent bills or evictions.
The rent in Florida is so much cheaper. Like a grand less. You can get a nice 2-2 apartment for about $2000 sometimes less in places. You also can get everywhere pretty easily too.
Dari is already in a college program, so switching states will be problematic. Besides, rent is lower in Florida now because fewer people want to live there.
I couldn’t remember my rent so I looked through some emails and found a rental agreement for 2015 that was $1570 for a one bedroom in Rego Park Queens. 6565 Wetherole Street. Almost 10 years ago!!! Forgot the name of the place. It was a part time doorman building. Partly co-ops./ owners and renters both. I had a roommate who I gave her the room and I kept her rent at 40% so that when increases occurred her share would always be 40%. I believe this was our arrangement. I took the living room. I also had Q Dog. We had a foyer and a kitchen nook with a window and a table but our kitchen cooking space was smaller than the one in your video. I mentioned in my comments to your channel last yearish? how I arranged to get it - having worked for CitiHabitars/Corcoran the previous year. You did a good / very impressive job getting a good deal in a short period of time. Probably because of your experience traveling etc. Don’t stop learning. There’s always more to know in New York City apartment living. But I should reiterate for those looking for an apartment - having worked in Real NYC real estate - one of the biggest mistakes people outside NYC make in looking fir an apartment is: they know or heard of someone getting such and such a deal and they think they cannot get the same deal. This is not how it works in New York. Things change. If you think you can get a great deal you’ll miss all the good/fair deals. People can believe what they want. But like I said before, the goal should be to find a fair deal that you like and once you find it -put an application in immediately. Don’t wait to look around for a “better” deal. Or one like this one. The market is just too tight. Having an apartment in New f$&&@ing York City is an awesome accomplishment for anyone. Another fun and interesting video. Cheers
I love the apartment it look so spacious! I’m a young woman from the UK who dream is to move to the USA.😃 By the way your video is very educational! Thank you so much for sharing.❤️
Yes , please do a NYC neighborhood comparison video! I really enjoyed your apartment tour, thanks for sharing. Hopefully, it will be less painful finding another nice apartment because you now have a rental history and your old landlord as a reference.
Wow, Dasha. 😳 I live in the north of Virginia (near Winchester). We live in a three-bedroom house that costs us as much as your share of that apartment. And it's a mortgage, not a rental. In fact, funny story about dormitories... I bought this house because, when sharing the house with room mates, it was half as expensive as sharing a single hotel-style dorm room, with another guy, on campus 10 minutes away. 😅 So at least that much isn't different from New York. And, 18 years later, I can still live here, though commuting 2+ hours to work every day by car isn't always the most fun.
I love that apartment! You have been very creative living in the US this year and did a wonderful job. I hope you enjoyed your stay. Also, have a good time with your family in Russia this summer and give your baby-boy dog a kiss from me. Safe travels this 🙏 summer!😊❤
The apartment is an older one. Many people want a new building and are willing to pay in my opinion the exorbent rent to live in such a building. I have found that living in an apartment is almost always cheaper than living in a dorm in the USA. In many dorms breakfast, lunch, & dinner are included. At times activities are included with renting a dorm such as free pizza ( but you had to buy the beer or wine), meeting with a politician for an open forum discussion, etc.
That's what I was thinking. The "meal plan" can be very expensive, but is optional at some (But not all) universities. You sometimes have to be careful to unbundle this. Some dorms have had kitchens, while others have not. So, if one has no meal plan, it is smart to make sure the dorm has a kitchen.
Dari, have you been spending some time locking down a new place to stay with friends who will be living in the same general location as your school next semester... BEFORE you leave the U.S. again? This way you won't be scrambling to find a roof over your head when you come back to NYC in August. That would potentially mean far less stress for you. You might have better luck now since students may be leaving the area after graduating.
Those dorm rates are ridiculous. I recall how stressed you were when looking for an apartment. So I guess you're going to have to go through this again in September.
Hello Dari! Your flat is really nice and very spacious. Of course the price is very high. New York is huge and expensive and looking for a flat outside the city, where probably prices are more affordable, would be too inconvenient and far from the university. I hope you can find one just as cute for less!! You'll see, you'll find it! Have a wonderful holiday with your family and also a great stay in Portugal! Thank you for sharing and take care 💕🌷🪻⚘️
US surgeons’ salaries average about $35,000 per month, which makes the high rents a little less painful. Also, keep mind that the cost of housing varies widely between different parts of the US. In many parts of the US, a monthly mortgage of $3000 will get you a 200 square meter house on a 0.5 ha lot (including insurance and property taxes). It’s easy to get a distorted view of the US by focusing on one area or one aspect.
I know the rent my son is paying for an apartment (it's not his first apartment, either) so I have a somewhat realistic view about apartments and their rents. Try to avoid comparing U.S.A. prices with other countries' prices. They are mostly exorbitant ! A better method is to take into account one's disposable income. U.S.A. wages and salaries are also usually rather exorbitant so that can ease one's price pain.
@@greble11 In America, a surgeon may earn ten times as much money, but in Hungary 90% of the population is insured and practically everyone receives full medical care. It's really average, it could be better. It is a small and poor country. On the other hand, the subway in Budapest is clean, and there are no drug addicts on the streets, like in Philadelphia in the Kensington district.
@@sandor7594 I don’t think Hungary is a poor country. From the pictures I’ve seen, the architecture is grand and amazing. The point I was trying to make is that salaries AND living costs are much higher in the US. I think you are getting a distorted picture of the US. The only subway systems in the US that I have ridden on (Washington many times and San Francisco a few times) are clean. We don’t hide our problems in the US, and Europeans seem to celebrate our problems, but for the vast majority of us life is good. I’m not rich, but my employer pays for almost all of my health insurance, which is excellent. It should be considering how much it costs them!
As a Finn I don't understand why anyone would want to live in NYC. Already in the 80:s a friend's uncle who was a New York cop called it the sewer. Decades of far left policies have made it even worse. Fantastic history and architecture but sad what it has become. I would prefer a small town in the Midwest for much more bang for the buck.
Cops often deal with the dregs of society so it's not a fair comparison. Different if he was a stockbroker on Wall Street making lots of money. It's like the story of the elephant and the blind men. Each blind man had his own concept of what an elephant is based on the part of the elephant he touched.
The subway makes a Queens apartment convenient. There is an old bit of joke-wisdom that you probably have heard-- you can furnish your apartment with what's being thrown out on the streets! And if that's not "funny" enough-- there's a lot of really nice furniture, old stuff, that just needs to be cleaned up and sold as an antique!
You are probably foreign to U.S.A. real estate lingo. Realty agents often use "cozy" as a euphemism for "tiny small cramped". Her apartment is pretty roomy. It's why I consider it to be rented at a pretty good price.
Misleading title. You are showing a $1300 room in a shared apt where you have to share the bathroom and kitchen with other people and you are not even in Manhattan. It's just the reality in NYC how overpriced everything is here especially when we add how dirty & unsafe this city is.People barely survive here on $3,000-$4,000 a month.
@@camdenmcandrews average house in Sydney is 1 million ,most expensive country in the world because od mass imigration and anyone can buy here which pushes up the price to give us a fake GDP,most indebted people on earth ,I am looking for a country to have a second address before it becomes a police state
$3000 for a spacious 2 bedroom in Queens (close to manhattan) is a very good deal. A few years ago, it was actually cheaper to buy an apartment than rent because of very low interest rates. I bought a similar apartment in NYC back then and I pay $1800 a month mortgage (of course not including fees/down payment).
I remember how relieved I was when you finally found an affordable apartment! Making generalizations about the US is always risky. Quite often college dorms are less expensive than living off campus, but I think it’s more common to share a bedroom when you live in a dorm. I think it’s fairly rare grad students to live in dorms. Thanks for another interesting video.

Landlords and landladies get the asset appreciation. The renters get the huge rent bills or evictions.
@@solconcordia4315 exactly
The rent in Florida is so much cheaper. Like a grand less. You can get a nice 2-2 apartment for about $2000 sometimes less in places. You also can get everywhere pretty easily too.
Dari is already in a college program, so switching states will be problematic. Besides, rent is lower in Florida now because fewer people want to live there.
@@dan_hitchman007 it’s just comparison ok.
I was in Florida and it’s not for me :)
almost same price as your istanbul flat? this show that istanbul prices are crazy
I paid $450 in Istanbul, and here I pay $1300… not quite the same
@@DariStep ok i thought the whole apartment was 1300$. i guess that is impossible in new york of course :))
Dari when you are going back to Russia?
Cheers
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙌🏼
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I guess this video means you will be staying in New York for the time being.
New York City desirable? Yeah right, even Trump gave up on New York a long time ago
Please marry an American man and settle down in America
Are you married to American man ?
I love the apartment it look so spacious! I’m a young woman from the UK who dream is to move to the USA.😃 By the way your video is very educational! Thank you so much for sharing.❤️
Thanks so much! 😊
Yes , please do a NYC neighborhood comparison video! I really enjoyed your apartment tour, thanks for sharing. Hopefully, it will be less painful finding another nice apartment because you now have a rental history and your old landlord as a reference.
Will do!!
Thanks so much! 😊
Such an amazing home!
Very informative video on apartments in NYC nowadays. Prices have gone up a lot since I lived there, lol. (I actually lived in Jersey City).
Thanks :)
ah yes a gentrifier apartment tour
I could look at her All day 🤩🥰 so lovely 🌹😍🌹
Dari, have you been spending some time locking down a new place to stay with friends who will be living in the same general location as your school next semester... BEFORE you leave the U.S. again?
This way you won't be scrambling to find a roof over your head when you come back to NYC in August. That would potentially mean far less stress for you.
You might have better luck now since students may be leaving the area after graduating.
I'm glad you are making a video about finding your apartment. I'm dealing with the same, looking at UES, LIC, and downtown Brooklyn.
Goood luck!
Those dorm rates are ridiculous. I recall how stressed you were when looking for an apartment. So I guess you're going to have to go through this again in September.
I hope it won’t be as stressful lol
Evidently, NY has been good for your health. Good
Thank you! 🤗
3:55 My God! $3,000 is the salary of a surgeon in Hungary. And $1,300 is a good salary. The average is approx. 1000 dollars
Many truckers make over $10,000 in the US after taxes...
Good luck doll.
I think NYC is way better than it used to be in the 80s
@@DariStep The main thing is that you are happy with it!
Cops often deal with the dregs of society so it's not a fair comparison. Different if he was a stockbroker on Wall Street making lots of money. It's like the story of the elephant and the blind men. Each blind man had his own concept of what an elephant is based on the part of the elephant he touched.
SJU '24 alumn here!! Congrats on your school journey 🥳🥳💗💗
Thank you :))
Thanks!
Thanks for your support!!
That seemed really hard when you first moved to NYC without knowing much about the rental market. It's nice that you have the knowledge now.
Hopefully it will help ahahah
Really nice apartment ❤️
Thank you!! 😊
I'll be your roommate for next semester. No problem. I like to cook fish, but I'm sure you're ok with that.
That's expensive for anywhere else in the US too.
Nice!
Biggest lesson is to NEVER be a guarantor to anyone. Dont understand why people risk it even for family.

I like America so much
It is a great nation
The apartment looks really cozy ❤ take care and enjoy summer in Europe
You are probably foreign to U.S.A. real estate lingo. Realty agents often use "cozy" as a euphemism for "tiny small cramped".
Her apartment is pretty roomy. It's why I consider it to be rented at a pretty good price.
Thank uuu
@@solconcordia4315 for me cozy has a different meaning but ok.
I pay $2160 for 4 weeks 1 bed room apartment in outer Sydney ,
Assuming that's AUS$ 2160/month, it comes out to US $1,439.17/month. Still pricey for a 1 bedroom apartment.
Ohh good deal!

That is an excellent price for an apartment almost anywhere in the U.S.
