This video is absolutely SPOT ON Matt! I can't tell you how many times I talk people down from getting a new camera and tell them to invest in lighting instead. We all get excited about the thought of a new camera, but in many cases it won't actually improve a person's photography as much as they might hope. So glad you made this video to help others out with this!
Thanks Jesse!! Glad to hear you agree. It’s definitely I’ve made mistakes with this when starting out haha. Also trying to encourage people to just get into photography instead of waiting for a new camera.
I started out a couple years ago with my phone. Then when I knew I was hooked I pitched a used Canon EOS t5i and learned the ins and outs of a dedicated camera, I have since upgraded to a mirrorless Canon R10 which I love, but still find myself shooting quite a bit with my phone. So your advice is spot on. Thanks for the honesty and without the hype Matt it really helps people who are starting out.
Beauty is in the eye of the camera holder 🙃. For me, taking pictures with the phone is like reading books on kindle. Ngl, I do both and I do use my phone sometimes but nothing beats holding a camera …or reading a physical book. Happy New Year! 🎉
Cant wait for your tutorials on phone photography... I just stared and I think I'm doing fine but still I want perfect pictures I'll do those test shots you recommended 👌
Sweet! I'm working on them 👍🏼 That's cool you just started; let me know how the test shots go. Putting the reps in and taking a ton of pics will definitely help you.
These are all excellent suggestions. I started with my iPhone for fun and after getting the hang of it slowly and realising natural light and a mix of aided light from mini lube cubes etc was key as well as reflecting backlight back on to the subject was key I ended up upgrading for a sub $400 camera a Canon 700D. Best buy so far and I've had endless fun so far.
Most modern smart phone cameras are perfect for getting into toy photography. Years ago I was using my Samsung S4 to do toy photography and over time, with my overall interest in photography growing, I picked up better gear which helped my photos more. And by gear I don't mean just my camera (and lenses), I mean my lighting too and I cant stress enough how much proper light can be a game changer. And definitely keep taking photos when you can because that's the best way to learn!
Yeah! Totally agree. It's crazy how important lighting is. I feel like I didn't fully understand until I started getting into video and filmmaking. And that's a point I wanted to make as well, upgrading other equipment first before going all in on camera. I appreciate your support!
Hey Matt ! Yes I use the Canon M50ii (Mark 2) ! Very compact and fits the need for most things ! Very versatile capable of using most makers vintage lens (with adaptors). I also have the EOS M10 and 30D ?! But wouldn't get rid of my 50 ?! It's my favorite 💯! Light weight ! 👍 😂
Thank you for this video and all your videos honestly. You and sirdork have inspired me to start toy photography as a hobby that i never thought i needed so thank you so much! As for the camera i have started using my iphone 14 pro and until i learn more things, practice and get better its definitely up to the job.
So glad to be able to help inspire you; really means a lot to hear! And that's awesome that you started with your phone and still using it to get better. It will definitely pay off later.
Hello mate. :) happy to see a video on this. I started with my Iphone 11 and it was perfect for photos. Then i got my bridge Sony Cybershot HX400v and i fell in love with it and took much cleaner and sharper photos but i struggle sometimes with getting descent shots that i am happy with and there are no real Bridge figure photography videos. I hope to see one of those in future from you or anyone :). But back to the phone i really loved using the Iphone it took fantastic shots and was easier for portable photography so i look forward to this series :)
I don't want to seem like a stalker and comment on all your social media hehe but as always excellent content and yes, that is the hardest idea to get out of your head, the need for better equipment always to be better photographer
Watching your videos has helped a ton with my toy photography! When it comes to photoshop, can you make a video on how to add explosions/dirt/debris effects? For example I do a lot of photos with WWII Figures and I’m looking to just have more action in my scenes. I know I can do explosions more practically but I was wondering if there’s any way to add those effects in photoshop? Is it as easy has getting like a png of an explosion and dropping it in the photo, adding some Gaussian blur and doge and burn? Was wondering your thoughts, thank you!
That’s so awesome to hear! Glad I’ve been able to help out. I will definitely add that to the list of tutorials. A quick answer: for certain effects, it can be as easy as dropping in the png and that’s it. But adding blur, brushing some color, and adding other lighting are thing that can help make it look more real and a part of the image. I will start working on a video soon!

Wow nice! Those are all really cool upgrades. I’ve heard good things about the R10! Glad you liked the video and thanks for the support.

That’s a great comparison for sure! I really like that. And yeah, I agree with just holding the camera vs phone. Thank you! Happy New Year! :)

Nice! That’s really cool and definitely the ideal progression. Thanks for sharing and for watching.

Awesome! That’s really cool. I still haven’t tried a Bridge camera but I am interested in trying one out. I’ll see what I can do!
I use a Sony A6000 that I've had for about 3 yrs which is Sony's cheapest and I got a second hand 50 mm lens so all in about 600 euro still love it
Nice! That’s good!
