Thank you thank you!!!! I’ve watched dozens of other videos on this and none helped. I just kept getting lucky with the masking, and now I actually understand it! Thank you again!
Hey sorry, I didn’t see this question! No, there is no way in illustrator to rotate the canvas like in Photoshop. But, you can rotate whatever you’re working on by hitting r and return, setting a degree and then rotating it back by setting the same degree with a negative when you’re done.
Hi, do you have any videos on how to create gradients with the blend tools? I have some skills and knowledge but not for the more complex designs I want to make.
Actually, I do. I don't know how to get it to you on RUclips, but if you have time, it's on my Facebook page's gallery. If you go there, you'll have to type in Benjamin Blackwell in the search box (I'm the one with the guitar with a Japanese character on it as my avatar---and yes, I actually play guitar---it should be easy to spot.) Once in, it's under "Photos" and the name of it is called "Timeless Journey". (I designed that in a program called "Bryce 5 many years ago.)
I have a problem. I'm doing what you're saying but instead of getting you're results, everything just turns invisible and I don't think the pattern turned into the object's shape either, what do I do?
hi great video. Just wondering if you could help me, is it possible to keep different brush stroke on top object while clipping? I have a shape with a brush stroke and whenever I use clipping mask the brush stroke disappears yet i can custom the brush stroke on the object inside the shape i am filling. any help would be great.
Usually I just copy the clipping mask shape and paste in front, then add the brush to that. It looks like you can't add a brush to a clipping mask shape (I just tested, couldn't get that to work). I hope this helps!
None of it works... even when it does something I can see the outline of the shape AND the whole image I'm trying to mask... WHY is Illustrator so FUCKING shitty???????
It sounds like you might have more than one copy of things, right on top of each other. Maybe try grouping everything but the mask, then select the group and mask shape, and make the mask. I also have a video called “Why isn’t my clipping mask working” - you can just search for it on my channel. Sorry you’re having trouble!
@@GDHT I've tried it all.. bottom line is, nothing works. Even when I can get it to work, it still doesn't work-- My conclusion is that the .png I was using must be too complex for illustrator to understand (even though Photoshop could make a clipping mask with the same file in .05 seconds) The closest I could get would have the background sort of clip around the .png but the rest of the background would still be visable instead of ACTUALLY masking in the shape of the .png. The suggestion to "create compound path" with the .png layer resulted in Illustrator making a complete mess out of the layer, expanding it left and right with huge empty areas. I really think the people who design Illustrator don't use it -- it's hands down the worst software I've ever seen. But, i do see they FINALLY added the ability to crop an image, after 26 years. Before the latest version people insisted that it made sense to have to use the pathfinder to extrude out portions of an image you didn't want to use, and the same adobe cult members treated me like I was dumb for asking why you can't simply crop an image. So maybe in another 10 years of so Abobe will make clipping masks in Illustrator work; maybe they are 10 years worth of monthly fees away from actually repairing their broken software any further.
I use Illustrator all day every day, and I use masks all the time with no problem. If you want to send me the file to take a look at, here's my email: howtographicdesigner@gmail.com - you can just send the mask and what you need to put inside it, hopefully that'll make the file size smallish. :)

Excellent tutorial, very clearly demonstrated and very well explained. I always learn a lot from your video tutorials. Many thanks!
Thank you so much - I'm so glad it was helpful!!

You're welcome - so glad the video helped!!
Thank you for making these. I love them so much. I have watched them a few times. I wish I was home to play around with this right now
Question, is there an easy way to rotate the canvas when I am drawing? (PC)
Awww I really appreciate that!! Thank you so much!!

excellent it's very helpful. please tell us about (cant make a mask the top selected object is must be a path) please please please.
It sounds like your top object isn't a path. It can't be a group, so ungroup all. And make sure it's a completely closed path.

Ben Blackwell Not really. Do you have an example of the type of art that you’re talking about?

Hmmm, it's hard to say without seeing your file. Here's another video about troubleshooting clipping masks: ruclips.net/video/yUagwaeWSl8/видео.html
