This is the new Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III, a retooled and refueled update of this very popular working man's tube amp. This 40-watt, 1x12 combo delivers big Fender 6L6 tone in a rugged platform that's perfect for any studio or live gig. Three channels with varying levels of gain, a bright switch, and a master volume let the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III deliver an impressive range of clean and dirty tones at any volume, and an effects loop makes it very pedal friendly. The redesigned footswitch is quite compact, so as to fit easily on a crowded pedalboard, and a non-reflective black control panel makes settings easy to see even under bright stage lighting. The Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III 's tonal upgrades include a redesigned tone circuit and a new Celestion G12P speaker, resulting in tighter bass, smoother drive, and more mid-range punch.
Bought one a year ago. Love it. But beware: 40 watts in tube land will knock all the pictures off all the walls.
This amp is such a tease. I bought one, and I live in a small apartment. It sounds great at low volumes, but just sounds amazing the louder it gets (not great for apartment dwellers).
I was skeptical about this amp for years until picking one up in a trade and it turns out it's excellent. It has a nice warm sound and sounds really good with anything I plug into it.
Oh my gosh, that was like the best Jimi cover i have ever heard.
Dude has a perfect commercial voice
Ive had this amp for about a year now, its perfect for everything and sounds absolutely amazing clean or distorted. By far one of the best tube amps you could get
1 Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
2 Radiohead - Sulk (2:09)
3 Led Zeppelin - Nobodys Fault But Mine (4:00)
Gigged with one for three years now hasn't let me down love it
This exact setup shall be mine. ALL MINE. A tele and a hot rod deluxe has been what I've been wanting forever.
Uh Dude, Fender should pay you (more?) for doing this video, because the tones you are producing are extremely excellent! I just listened to this and then literally called in and ordered one of these amps. Nicely done!!!
Not only are the reviews helpful for choosing the right equipment but watching Paul play is an experience to!
Pro Guitar Shop owes Andy all the success. The man is so good player, that everyone should learn from him how to use all that stuff. He can make everything sound good. I think PGS should make demos of budget gear and Andy will sell everything.
I think you are one of the best person to demo products on the web when it comes to guitars and amps! seriously!
The clean channel is killer in this amp. Its sounds so good when cranked.
IMO the 2nd biggest reason I bought the Fender Hot Rod III ( 1st being the incredible clean channel) is the way it handles pedals...I never touch the overdrive channel because it makes every OD/Distortrion pedal just shine and makes you think its another channel other then a pedal..This has turned into my favorite amp and completely blew away my expectations for it.. Great Demo Andy Thanks bro!
Amazing sound and playing
RADIOHEAD SOUNDS AMAZING ON ANDY'S HANDS
035 to 040 awsome tone, now I know why I am getting one this week to go with my telecaster
That Radio Head sounded awesome! Andy rules!
Andy's playing is soooo..... AWESOME!
Fender is really nailing it with these new amps.
Wow just got this amp two days ago for my birthday, didn't even realize i was watching a video bout this amp, pretty cool.
I tried those exact settings upon purchasing mine a month ago, cracked the ceiling downstairs and still have a ring in my ears lol....awesome amp for gigging but ill stick to my 5watt Champ for home!
You might want to see if anyone you know has a cab that they would let you try out. An external speaker cab can take the pressure off the primary speaker; let you get some better headroom at higher volumes. Hope this helps.
As usual, Andy, you're the man. Great demo!!!
Ha! Diggin the rockabilly version of "Nobody's Fault but Mine."
AIN'T NOBODYS FAULT BUT MINE! Great video!
Wow, sounds great. They did improve the dirty side.
One would think that this is definitely the wrong amp for Jimi's All Along the Watchtower. It lacks the Fuzz pedal and the raw crunch of a Plexi. However, still sounds great. What a great amplifier!
I usually hate the Fender drive channels; this one sounds half good. Nice improvements.
Knock it off I just bought the Ltd Ed Blues Junior from you!
:)
Thanks Andy for the demo's You sold me in the BJ Ltd Ed and I love it!
J5
love the videos, i find myself watching them just to hear you play. Keep Rawking!
Page was a brilliant writer.
Really nails the Johnny Greenwood tone!
this is a great amp for stage work. some of these comments scare me- you guys have to understand just how LOUD this amp gets! it is NOT a bedroom amp!!! I'm a Punk/Garage rock guy, and I like it loud and gritty...... this amp is frighteningly loud when dimed. I use a 4x10 Deville, and even outdoors on a stage it's punishingly LOUD............ you have been warned!
Is it too loud 4 a bedroom?
Jimi's tone was spot on, it's like he took over Andy.
Wow, that Led Zep cover was awesome!
i got this amp right next to me right now, using 1962 strat. i kind of regret buying it but it is very great for jazz tone
Mother of God! You're playing that amp loud!
Great to put a face to the voice after loads of viewings Andy! Oh and great playing as always!!!
nice demo, Andy! tell me, is the eq on these only for the drive channel?
@Crodon its doesnt matter how big u think he is he is still the andy we love
Andy has impeccable taste in music. Sulk from Radiohead to Nobody's Fault But Mine from Led Zeppelin. Best demos on RUclips.
that's the review i was waiting for
It just wouldn't be a PGS demo without some Radiohead.
Great playing, as always !
We have a Hot Rod Deluxe III which is 6 months old.
This amplifier has been checked out by our authorized Fender service center.
1. Clean channel volume control is so touchy. Can't play it above 2.
2. There's an annoying 60/120 hz buzz with either SC or HB pick ups.
3. Lots of annoying buzz on the DRIVE Channel.
4. Measuring 40V AC from earth ground to chassis. Not sure if this is normal or not.
We measured it because the artist was getting low current lip shock on the mic.
Andy is the best of all youtube!!
i just knew you were going to play some radiohead seeing that tele and the the hot rod deluxe in the pic for this video. excellent!
Andy, I need to stop watching your videos because you make me want to buy everything you demo. You're an amazing musician, thanks for all the great vidz. Keep up the great work.
andy you're the best guitarist ever
great demo
sounds great, how does this compare to the hotrod deville?
LOVE THE HENDRIX ANDY!!
Nothing like a little Hendrix on the intro.
sounds like a great amp, like the 3 channels :)
Love your playing mate!
WOW the drive channel is amazing! nothing to do with my (ex) old hot rod deluxe! And the more drive too... it's juicy...
This amp is very much brighter than the blues deluxe. I have both. And the reverb on the deluxe is way more deep and lush than the blues deluxe. But I prefer the blues deluxe more.
Hey, a tiny bit late on the demo Andy! I just bought one of these less than a week ago! Great demo as always!
Very nice sound! Why did I sell my telecaster all those years ago!!!??? :-(
you have an amazing voice...
Loved the intro! ;)
That's where its gonna sound this awesome :)
i see your point and I understand using the tone knob for coloring the sound, but i'm a "tone" purist in my own mind. i want the guitar to sound exactly as the pickups are designed to make it sound. anything wired between the pup and the amp is a waste. use a volume pedal, and if it's bright, turn the treble down on the amp.
Another great video Andy. You really do get a different type of sound out of your guitar playing with your fingers, takes some getting used to though. LOL Would you say there is more Gain on this amp than the Blues Jr?
That amp sounds friggin sweet!!! Im so having a hard time deciding between this and BluesJr! I just cant listen to this enough! ANDY thanks so much for all ur great demos/reviews.
Which would you choose for leading worship in a 200-300 person church? I can mic it if needed but would rather not.
It's gonna be mine in one week ! :)
@nbcards No, they changed the pots and they have a wider sweep. BIG difference
his picking is unique
Thanks for the demo Andy, REALLY nice tones. That's coming from myself who's quite the metalhead so i think that says something. And that is one rugged looking footswitch hah. Just one question, what is the purpose of the 2 inputs on the amp?
That "Sulk" by Radiohead cover, starting around 2:09, was cool as hell.
nice strat dude
Andy does rule for sure!
Will the clean channel on the hotrod give you any overdrive break up? A sweet spot if you will?
@ToddeeTheTeleMan That's freakin' loud, but it depends how your parents/neighbors are. When I play with my band I play at 1.5 or 2 (Considering 1 (on the amp) = 0) ;) So it's perfect for gigging and playing with a band. And it's absolutely great for "building" a sound, it works very well with effects. ;)
dam you Andy now I must buy that amp or else I won't be able to remove the intro from my head
what do people mean when they say the overdrive sucks, it sounds fine to me.
such great demos, that's the way you have to play a fender guitar!! ;)
we love Andy! :-)
@ProGuitarShopDemos This deserves a side-by-side comparison. Old vs. new.
I've improved myself just by studying andy's playing and copying.
I love this amp!!!
This man is a radiohead fan
@Crodon also gotten even more spectacular at guitar. and andy, you look great ;)
Fantastic!
I am thinking of buying one of these for playing clean. I use an overdriven Marshall JCM 800 50w for the rock set but we are expanding into Funk so the idea is to use a switch to alternate between amps. The Marshall never goes above half way on volume with 6 on the gain. The question is: is the 40w deluxe loud enough to play clean with a hard hitting drummer (without a PA)?..or... Do I need to be thinking about a 60w Deville? Help please.
Is this too loud to be used in bedroom practice? i want something for that, but that can also easily compete with a drummer and be used in gigs.
Very nice !
What's the model of your stratocaster please ?
Hi Andy ! First of all ,thanks ! You give us the same amazing work with every video .
I'm gonna buy an amp in 2/3 months and I really hesitate between this amazing Fender Hot rod deluxe III and the Blackstar HT 40 ,surely more versatile .I know the clean channel of this amp is just awesome but is the Blackstar's clean almost equivalent ? Can you give me advices ? Thx
@ProGuitarShopDemos would you recommend this new HRD over the Blues Deluxe? BD sounded better when I tested at guitar center, but I didn't have my guitar or effects with me. With versatility and the fact I use pedals for distortion, which would you recommend?
Any word if there will be a tweed version available in the future?
@Daavoid 6L6's are power tubes, 12ax7's are preamp tubes. There's no real number to give on the life of tubes...too many factors, and it's not like they wear out like batteries. My buddy has an amp that is 50 years old, and still has the original tubes in it, and I've had tubes die on me within a year.
Sometimes they just lose their life, and sometimes they seem to last forever.
I have an older Hot Rod... love the clean channel (a lot) but yeah, the dirty channel needed some work.
Maybe it would be better with single coils.
This amp's awesome! My friend's been wanting it for agesss :) gotta say though, not too keen on the new music used when Andy's talking :/ CHANGE IT BACK!
Is it good for live performance? I mean, just using only this amp without mixer. Thanks :)
Hi Andy i'm know dealing with a big question, i have the oportunity to change one mexican telecaster for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or a Fender Blues Jr. i play blues with a 1969 Gibson es-335 in style of BB King, Freddie King, Peter Green, John Mayall,etc... i normally play clean with a little bit of overdrive for leads! It's for home playing mostly but i'll want to do some small gigs with it and studio record. Wich one do you think it's more suitable for me? Thank you, João
@1FaTaLMentality I thought the same! in your honor! :D
The Blues Jr would do great if the gig was miked. It would be a little on the quiet side for practice, but it all depends on how hard your drummer hits.
