I don't think Kiri has a father. My theory is that Sigorni Weaver's character found a way to upload herself to Pandora, or connect herself to it. Somehow Eywa was able to provide her with a child that can also live to connect herself to it/her. Something along those lines.

Appreciate your reviews. The use of "cuz" and "bro" felt completely fake. Stupid plotline that the US government pays billions of dollars to kill one Jake Sully. Don't understand why Jake had a dad bod, he looked like an average Joe in a Navi costume versus an actual Navi. Neytiri needs her own movie, now. Tuk was adorable but Kiri was too moody and looked like Sigourney Weaver acting like a 12-year-old. Meh.

Once again you two are spot on! I loved it visually, but several things bothered me about it as it relates to story. After 3 hours of visual candy, and an emotional moment or two, I went home and started to explain the movie to my wife... and I started laughing and realized I was basically telling the plot to the first one.
Same villain (upgraded to Navi so it's more of a fair fight?), swap Jake learning from the tree Navi to his kids (and him off screen mostly) learning from the water Navi, swap unobtainium with space whale brain juice, and Navi with the help of nature win the fight.
The things that bothered me: 3 hour and 12 minute movie starts with exposition dump. Before I have my coat off and I'm comfortable in my seat, we have a random human kid being raised by Navi... and in the beginning he looked bigger than a human kid would be and I was confused if he was hybrid or not... and eventually figured out he wasn't, I must have missed it in the exposition dump. We also have a Sigourney Weaver baby raised by Jake Sully as his own daughter and somehow they had kept her avatar alive long enough to even realize she was pregnant? Last we saw, both bodies were lying limp at the mother tree... then one was disposed of, but the other kept and given a pregnancy test?
Ok, they are there, and the movie starts. Humans arrive, we then have a 1 year time jump... Jake has been leading raids against the humans for a year now... and suddenly, he feels the need to stop and hide. We never hear about the tree people again... did they keep raiding? Did they go into hiding? Were they ever raided, killed, searched for Jake Sully like we see happen to the water people?
Ok, for some reason he goes to the water tribe to be in hiding as a refugee even though nothing really changed for him to feel that way.
We have a long time of the kids all learning the new way, and Jake as a side note learns too but we barely see that, we experience it through the kids. I liked the kids and their adventures, it was character development, finally, predictable, but I could watch a plant grow on Pandora and find it stunning.
Then what, like 2 hours in we find out what the new unobtanium is for, again mostly through exposition dump as they kill a space whale to get the water Navi mad, and they show us space whale brain juice, oh and it somehow stops humans from aging... which they figured out... when? In the year they were on the planet? Or during the time they were gone but they had harvested a couple before they left? I don't know. They somehow know.
Then we have the battle after the kids get kidnapped again and again, emotional loss of one of them, the battle ends but the bad guy lives to be the bad guy again in the next movie.
Then Jake says they'll leave, but they are accepted as water Navi, so now he'll stay to fight the humans with them. He is exactly in the same position he was in when he decided it was best to hide at the beginning of the movie... but in a much less compatible environment. Weird.
His wife and kids are built for tree life, for tree combat, actually have family and a community there... but sure, on water is where he'll make the stand. I understand for him, as an outsider originally, it's just another place to call home... but to his family, they can actually go HOME now and fight from there, side by side with their actual tribe... but nope, dad says we have to take our stand here with our new "family" instead of our actual family.
Overall, I agree. Beautiful movie, but recycled story.
As a side note. What are the humans that remained on Pandora using for fuel for their helicoptors, medicine, ammo? They aren't getting resupplied by Earth... until the humans came back... they were on their own. Maybe they'll tell us in part 3...

Saw this yesterday in 4DX, and the movements were strong during the action scenes! It was definitely an experience for the theatre based on the visuals alone. Story-wise, I'm childree and the stuff with the kids didn't connect with me as much, but parents might like it more? Regardless,I still think the themes are strong enough to keep the story going. I appreciated James Cameron's dedication which clearly showed, and I would definitely watch the next one.

I got a voucher then chose the next showing at the Dolby 3D theater across the concessions and enjoyed about an hour and a half before the movie 3D started flickering and they had to kick everyone out for that one. So I've tried to see this movie twice and haven't seen the ending. Gonna try to go see it tomorrow at an early showing and hopefully 3rd times the charm.

"The story is filler... it doesn't really take us anywhere. It just kind of takes us from one part of Panora to another, but nothing really happens."
I believe the often voiced critique that considers the reason for the hunt of the Sully family a plot hole is too harsh. Jake /Turuk Makto is the leader of the native insurgency that has kept dealing crippling blows to the human landgrab project. The argument that with his and his family's exile there is no immediate threat to human interest and therefore no reason for hunting him down left (safe Quaritch's thirst for revenge) doesn't hold water. One doesn't need to look any further than US history some 130 to 150 years ago and the treatment of Native Americans. In 1877, the Nez Perce abandoned their homeland and were fleeing towards Canada, i.e. into exile outside the US. But the US military sent multiple forces after them in order to keep them from even fleeing the US. The rationale behind this was apart from revenge for defeating a US force that they could unite with Sitting Bull's Lakota in exile (who were hereditary enemies of the Nez Perce btw.) and possibly return for attacking settlers. The same goes for groups of Cheyennes in 1875 (Sappa Creek massacre) and 1879 (Fort Robinson outbreak) and anything Geronimo of the Mescalero Apaches is known for. People who think this plotline isn't plausible simply can't fathom the vindictive ruthlessness of colonial agents of ethnic cleansing.

Lots of love to the legendary Sigourney Weaver for getting her bag but I thought the first movie was some white savior bullshit with great 3D effects 😂 However I stay curious and wanted to know the results of 13 yrs. when the first movie wasn't that memorable outside of the effects so I appreciate you for filling in those blanks with your critique!!
And I have to agree with Nick when it comes to Ron Perlman as Vincent the Beast; half-lion, half-human, all the sauce.

Thank you for being real. I have been seeing everyone yelling this is the best film of ALL TIME - and I am one of the few who really disliked the first film. It was (at the time) technically a step forward BUT the story was a rip off of Dragon Riders of Pern, Dances with Wolves - the white man saves the natives ... yeuck. I may watch it sometime to see the tech and visuals, but I am not rushing out to go and see it.

@@kellykelley2649 We are not arguing about the actual movie, I've only seen part 1 once when it 1st came out, and I missed the 1st hour. You are right it's a ripoff of those movies I would even add Fern Gulley to that mix, the story was bland as fuck and generic as fuck. All I said was I've watched several reviews, maybe you were being hyperbolic or facetious but I've seen NO ONE call the best film of the year, yet alone of All-time. I've seen people praise how amazing it looks and how it's a much watch for that.

  • @Douglas_Hamilton
    @Douglas_Hamilton Год назад +3

Without having seen the film (live in Sweden - the land of delayed film releases) I think you nailed it! This is exactly how I imagine the movie to be. A somewhat banal and predictable plot with stereotypical characters compensated with massive cgi. Basically, you're paying to see the latest and greatest in visual effects and I can't see anything wrong with that.

THREE HOURS??? Holy Christ. And it sounds like a YA drama from just how many kids there are this time around. I was really hoping you would say the story is great this time but it's such a bummer Cameron still wouldn't come up with a better script after spending all that money on the efx. Also I never understood why Sam Worthington was chosen as a lead, he's such a zero in terms of screen presence...would've so much rather Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Zoe Saldana as the leads and that dude just gets killed off in the beginning. 😮‍💨 This movie is probably gonna make bank esp internationally, so I hope most of that money goes into the efx team's pockets instead of just James Cameron. Anyway, thank you so much for your review, gentlemen! Gonna just stream this so I can skip through it. Have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend!

I'm studying ASL and one of the things I thought was funny was that Kate Winslet's character & the daughter are clearly speaking ASL but the others were consistently off, just similar enough that I'm convinced it wasn't a different form of sign language (though I guess it's a possibility), just that they did the bare minimum & James Cameron didn't care enough for consistency and/or didn't know enough sign to tell it was wrong🤣Like the sign for friend is done by hooking fingers, but the son just smashed his hands together. Or was it to show they really sucked at sign? lololol

And why haven't the peaceful water Navi been warring with these greedy humans for as long as the humans have been hunting whales? didn't make sense. . .

I guess I drank the Kool-Aid… I went in expecting to hate Avatar 2, but I was drawn in by the world he created and I actually found myself caring about the new characters and what happened to them (even if I still had trouble distinguishing them from each other sometimes). I get your point that much of it was setup, but I disagree that it was filler. I found myself even invested in the large whale creatures and their side story. I put off watching this for so long but I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would, based on the reviews I read.
I did get such heavy Titanic vibes during the climax that I expected Jack and Rose to show up and one of them was actually in it the whole time and I didn’t know that until the end credits!!
