Deep impact is a brilliant film. Combines great cast, great story and has some inspiring science to get kids into astronomy. Massively underrated film.
Watching this on 4K, this was most definitely one of the best examples of frame-to-frame consistency I've ever seen for an "older" movie. So often older films get lauded as being "the best it's ever looked" on 4K as if that supposed to absolve it of any critique. Here, pretty much every scene's focus pulling, choice of filmstock, grain structure, and lighting exposure was dead on. That's not just a testament to the restoration, it's a testament to the cinematography team at the time of shooting managing to nail frame after frame. Too often, movies suffer from a bit too much filmstock variety that the crew very clearly had their days where they struggled then aimed to compensate for during film processing. Whatever amount of post there was done for this, the PQ continuinity was some of the best I've ever seen here.
This movie hits me hard every time I watch it. I agree with you 100% about the scene where the parents are giving the baby to the kids on the dirt bike to get them to safety. As a parent I would do the exact same thing. Makes me tear up every time.
the reason they are called a twin movie is not only because of the subject but also that they were produced and filmed and released very close to each other, almost comically timing. I remember thinking what acid hollywood studios was on that they had to make similair movies all the time. yes because there are many examples of this phenomenon in hollywood.
Your comment about the colors on the artwork with the comets and water caught my attention. Blue and orange are complementary colors on the color wheel. If you Google something like “blue and orange” art or movie covers you’ll see just how often this is done. So in the end, it has nothing to do with the actual subjects and their appearance in the movie timeline and everything to do with the two colors.

Great movie! Excited to see it on 4K! I do have to argue I think your point of it "being better because it's on 4k" is a very bias perspective of movies in general. The quality of the physical media, better or not, shouldn't subject a better story line or overall movie, especially when you just made a video saying "99% of Blu-rays looks the same on 4k & even watching on DVD doesn't dramatically change your experience". I REALLY hope Armageddon comes to 4K 1 day & I hope to see you covering it, but it's sadly a Touchstone Pictures film which is owned by Disney.
Also in 1998 twin movies Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. I remember a critic back then saying Terence Malick picked a Hell of a year to come out of a 20 year hiatus to make a WWII movie.
Just got my copy and noticed some blowout on Dolby Vision, where Wolf's jeep goes over the cliff and explodes. Also when the Orion booster lights up.
