That's a fun pair of films too. I've had Volcano on DVD for decades. I used to have the issue of Cinefx where they went over how they did the VFX for Volcano, how they made the lava flow, etc. which was fun to read at the time.

I auditioned for this movie, they were filming near me in the mountains. While I didn't get the part, Mimi Leder's assistant called me to let me know they were really impressed and I only barely didn't get in. No one does that in Hollywood, its unheard of. They just don't say anything and move on if you don't get the role. I felt it was very classy and appreciated it and never forgot it.

Watching this on 4K, this was most definitely one of the best examples of frame-to-frame consistency I've ever seen for an "older" movie. So often older films get lauded as being "the best it's ever looked" on 4K as if that supposed to absolve it of any critique. Here, pretty much every scene's focus pulling, choice of filmstock, grain structure, and lighting exposure was dead on. That's not just a testament to the restoration, it's a testament to the cinematography team at the time of shooting managing to nail frame after frame.
Too often, movies suffer from a bit too much filmstock variety that the crew very clearly had their days where they struggled then aimed to compensate for during film processing. Whatever amount of post there was done for this, the PQ continuinity was some of the best I've ever seen here.

the reason they are called a twin movie is not only because of the subject but also that they were produced and filmed and released very close to each other, almost comically timing. I remember thinking what acid hollywood studios was on that they had to make similair movies all the time. yes because there are many examples of this phenomenon in hollywood.

Your comment about the colors on the artwork with the comets and water caught my attention. Blue and orange are complementary colors on the color wheel. If you Google something like “blue and orange” art or movie covers you’ll see just how often this is done. So in the end, it has nothing to do with the actual subjects and their appearance in the movie timeline and everything to do with the two colors.

Great movie! Excited to see it on 4K! I do have to argue I think your point of it "being better because it's on 4k" is a very bias perspective of movies in general. The quality of the physical media, better or not, shouldn't subject a better story line or overall movie, especially when you just made a video saying "99% of Blu-rays looks the same on 4k & even watching on DVD doesn't dramatically change your experience". I REALLY hope Armageddon comes to 4K 1 day & I hope to see you covering it, but it's sadly a Touchstone Pictures film which is owned by Disney.

And it most certainly Would have benefited from it. ALL the space scenes and the asteroid impact scenes would’ve been much better with Atmos. No Disaster movie should be without Atmos. Period.
