Ok, this got me fired up! That caller was right about getting started with having children as early as possible!!!!! Especially if they want to have 6 kids! These days, fertility is a MAJOR issue, and the rate declines significantly as a woman ages, even at the age of 24-27! Debt is definitely important, but this issue of having a family is as important if not more so these days. The stability of this country is based on having strong, solid, healthy families. And after that, stay out of debt the best you very well can, for goodness sakes!!!!!! I agree with Jade in that, get started now, but plan along the way to reduce your expenses and pile up the money so you don't have to go into debt! Way to go for wanting an amazing, large family - LOVE it!!

Why are you surprised? Did you expect them to tell her to go into debt?
Kids don’t make you go into debt. I have 4 and we have been able to be debt free the whole time. That advice was so off. And moreover life isn’t just about money.
Yeah, he stated “for this case,” because law school is not your average expense. Due to the unknown, Dave would have said make him pay for law school in cash and get pregnant. She was assuming that going into debt was okay. They can’t afford law school therefore, they should prepare for one or the other. Tuition just increased in 2024.

Dave probably wouldn't have told her to wait to have kids on principle, but he probably would have told her to come up with another plan that won't rely on them taking out debt.
Sometimes, that really does mean that you wait and save.

Depending on the law in her state, even though his name is not on her house deed, she may have to go through "legal eviction" proceedings, which can take days or even weeks.

Valerie (Law school wife) has made her mind up to do what she wants. We planned to have 2-3 kids and ended up having 9!! Family planning doesn't always go according to your perfect little plan. You might plan to have 4-6 and have only 2. Never know.

I love the show generally, but it is so inappropriate for Ken to react so aggressively and tell that woman not to have kids and wait for years... That was just such an overblown reaction, and we should be encouraging people to have kids not the other way around. I understand the importance of being financially stable prior to kids but he should have framed his response more like that instead of freaking out. I know too many girlfriends who have waited too long to have kids and cant have them anymore.
The caller with the mother who wants to do a reverse mortgage: if the house currently has a mortgage, when the reverse mortgage closes, the money from the reverse mortgage first goes towards paying off the current mortgage.

High interest rates are very motivating. Moving debt to a lower interest rate makes you feel better and the motivation to pay it off dissolves slowly. I speak from 2 times experience.

For the fire insurance, get a private adjuster that works for you! You can double, triple, quadruple the benefits if you have someone who knows the system and can work for you.
We had trees fall on our house, and the private adjuster was a huge benefit, there is smoke and water all over your house, a lot going on, get professional help.

Aw Valerie have kids when you want!! That was terrible advice from Ken. Just do not get into debt. Get a job that will give you maternity leave and work whenever you can. Don't put off having kids, just be responsible with your money. Obviously kids are super important to you and it's possible to have kids and not get in debt!

No, it's a terrible idea to take out loans - but it isn't Ken's place to tell them when to have kids. It's Ken's place to remind them of the costs of having kids. He could have made the same point in a far more rational, logical, non-judgemental way instead of being an overbearing prick about it.

@@Brickswol dealers are willing to lose money on end of month sales because the incentive they get from the factory is based on unit count and yes sometimes they will not not budge on cash deals as much as financed because they make money on the financed sales from the lender it’s called Dealer reserve.

For the law school couple, if Valerie starts at 28 (4 years from now) and has a kid every 1.5 - 2 years, they can have six kids by the time they are 38-40. He can work like crazy before law school, and she can work like crazy for those 4 years and they will have a huge stack of cash saved up for when she becomes a stay at home mom.
There are a lot of “ifs” with this suggestion. She could have a miscarriage, she could have early menopause, there could be complications after birth, for example, if she has cesarian she can’t get pregnant for a year. Waiting for the last fertility minute is reckless.

Its "old" if shes gonna try to have SIX kids and (likely) take a year or 2 between each one. She wants to live the house wife life with her babies assuming husband will just make $400k and allow her to not work.
Now if she was a reasonable person, she would just have a couple kids and then waiting until 27 isnt bad. But in her mind she's getting pregnant every 2 years and that needs to start now to not be geriatric for the last couple kids (35+)

Same. Pregnancy sucked so hard I refuse to do it again after having two children but I got pregnant super easy at 32 and 35. I could easily have two more before 40. What is the rush?

Other than Ken's delivery, he was spot on with his advice to Valerie about having a bajillion babies while her husband is in law achool with no income coming in. I always cringe a bit when Dave (especially) and the other personalities say don't wait on finances to have babies, as if having babies makes money problems magically disappear due to the awesomeness of babies. While babies don't cost much, according to Dave, they certainly don't help you get out or stay out of debt anytime sooner.

100k - 15% 401k - standard deduction - federal and state taxes = right about $73k, or about $6,100/month.
Maybe the lost $1,800 is going to health insurance for him and his kid, and/or he’s withholding too much from his check.

With the first caller, I do wish Jade hadn’t jumped to telling the woman she needed to immediately get out of the marriage. We don’t know the full story, and only hear the woman’s claims. I wish Jade would’ve said to immediately separate and seek counseling. I just wish people weren’t so quick to say to end marriages these days. We don’t know if this woman is truly being abused, because sometimes that may not be the whole story. Of course we want her safe, it just may not be the whole story.

Yes. It seems the show takes callers' information at face value and tries jot to doubt them because there is no way to verify on a 3-5 minute call with only one party present. At my office, we also have a believe staff policy until you are caught in a lie, then all bets are off (I work in HR)

That momma definitely shouldn't go into debt. They have a year before he goes to law school. Stack cash, have 3-4 jobs, and live on rice and beans, beans and rice - scorched earth!
And yes, she can work while pregnant. Take the maternity leave, and get back to work after baby is born. Look for a sweet grandma at their church to help lower daycare costs. Then when hubby has law degree and is making bank, momma gets to stay with them beautiful babies. They sacrifice for a season while he is getting the degree to set up their family for financial freedom!

I went to daycare and my parents raised me. I turned out great. There is no free lunch. If she insists on having kids now, and her husband is refusing to work through law school, how are they going to eat if she doesn't work and put the kids in daycare? The taxpayers? I think not. She needs to get a job or wait until her husband is an attorney.

Can Ken go car shopping with me?
It's easy to do. 1st question you ask is, do they have the exact make, model, trim, color, and optioned car you're looking for. After that, ask for their fees up front. Example, in NY fees should be: $12.50 for tire recycle fee, $10 safety inspection, $75 "doc" fee (document fee), and $325 title/reg, and plates. That should be it. Next, ask if there's any incentives for that month. Now, negotiate price. They will start at, or above MSRP. You want to settle on Invoice or below. I've never purchased a car (even during Covid) above invoice. Tips: Never tell them how you'll be financing OR if you'll be doing a trade in until AFTER you negotiate price.
Example: Car A MSRP's for $32000 and invoice is $30000. The total fees are $500 and there's a $1000 rebate. You negotiate and get the car for $30,000, plus the $500 in fees. You'll be paying tax on $30,500 PLUS the $1000 rebate BEFORE it gets deducted so....assuming a 5% sales tax, you're total out the door price including tax, then minus the rebate is $31075. You put $10k down and now you'll be financing $21075. NEVER buy an extended warranty, NEVER buy scotch fabric protection, NEVER buy rust preventative, NEVER buy dealer options.....just buy the car

I think I might be done with this show for a while. At least while Ken is on. He is such a jerk. Their treatment of Valerie was so terrible. I noticed that John also does this. Tells people that they shouldn’t plan things. And then with other people tells them that they are dumb for not planning things in advance. It’s like they enjoy telling people they are wrong. Everyone should plan, but plan loosely cause you never know what will happen.
Valerie- have as many kids as you want. I come from a family of 6 kids and it was so fun growing up in that lively home. My parents will never end up in a nursing home because there will be at least 4 of us who will take them in. And we will do it gladly. Life isn’t all about money. There’s financial capital and then there’s the social capital. I would 100% be poorer with lots of kids and lots of life than be a rich person calling an Uber to pick me up from the hospital. Have those kids, just try to cash flow and figure out a way to stay out of debt. Sorry that you got terrible advice from these two. I think this show lost something through the years. Idk.

Omg They got married less than a year ago. This lady is a liar. Not telling the whole truth. Jade and Ken really jumped the gun in just believing this woman and blaming the man without asking more questions.
She also contradicted herself in acting like this was the first time in a long time she's been in financial distress as she put it. But she also admits she brought 91k of debt into the marriage on her own. So she needs to get her facts straight and the hosts did a terrible job of holding her accountable

The show seems to have a policy on believing most callers and taking their information at face value. They really can't verify any information and they sometimes miss what we pick up on the other side

I couldn’t even finish this episode it was so bad. I love this show and listen all the time. But ughh. I don’t want to hear Jade give anymore cookie cutter advice, especially when it’s to a woman in an abusive relationship. I guess Jade feels like she doesn’t need to listen thoroughly when she just says the same thing to everyone, like missing the fact that it’s the husband going to law school. This woman didn't work and her husband is going to law school which means he also won't have an income. So *NEITHER* of them will have an income to afford rent, food, utilities and will live below the poverty line for 3 years and she wants to take out loans to live off of. You think it's smart to bring a baby into that? That's just selfish on her and her husband's part.
Going into debt so you can afford your magical number of kids is wild, why can't both work like crazy and stack up money to be used a year from now. Husband will start law in 2025, she can also work.😊

In the last segment, actually 43 minutes in not can certainly respect kens and Jade‘s opinions about waiting to have children. I respect that use your brain first and foremost,,, but I noticed at a constant pattern of these guys Jaden kid constantly burst peoples bubbles, man I mean, man give them a bit of encouragement please, please please instead of constantly timetime after time and call after call absolutely always burst peoples bubbles man not cool not cool at all. Stay on the side of positivity of course be realistic stay on the positivity side and total encouragement. I’m out.
