Hi again. Commented here when you were traveling through Michigan's northern regions. Just sold my '18 Chevy Colorado which has been a great truck for pulling our 24' TT around Michigan, etc., but I realized heading out further was probably going to take a different truck. So, a month ago I said good-bye to the Colorado (which my trade $$ received was just short of my original cost three years ago) and picked up a '15 F150 with the 3.5L turbo-boost V6. Plenty of towing power and capacity for what we need. After watching your videos regularly, along with a couple of others, I've decided to seriously look at 5th Wheels rather than TT's. Just starting my search and you've help convince me this is the hitching method to go with and basically for the same reasons you two gave. Wish me luck in my search! Also, on another channel the person demonstrating the same system used one of the little yellow balls on a telescoping mast with a magnet on the bottom to guide his backing up. I see someone else mentioned this and before I had a vehicle with backup camera I used that with our first popup camper and it worked great. I almost freaked out seeing Kim between the truck and trailer giving directions. Not that you're a bad driver, Norm, but accidents do happen and that would be devastating. Happy New Year from semi-snowy West Michigan.
Best of luck in your search. We now use a bright orange pool noodle that slips over the ball to guide me in hooking up. Thanks so much and Happy New Year to you.
When I used to haul gooseneck trailers I would take a long bungee strap and hook it under the bedrail one on each side and I would take a piece of surveyor tape and place it right in the middle of the goose ball attached to the bungee strap. Then I would line that up to the middle of the gooseneck hitch and back right up until I hit the bungee. I never had some one to help guide and I was able to hitch up by myself and after a while I had it down to a science. Now I have an RV and use the BW companion hitch. I use the Anderson blocks and like your idea of the plywood underneath. I went to tractor supply and bought a 4’x 6’ x 3/4 horse stall rubber mat and I am going to cut it into 2’x2’ square and put them under mine and hope that will work as well.
The hardest part of towing our trailer is getting it hitched up. We used to stay hooked up and didn't get to go anywhere because we wanted to avoid the hassle. Then we realized we just needed practice. Now we are getting pretty good at it. Thanks for sharing that it's not always easy for you either.
As an aide to hooking up consider using two of the telescoping tennis ball sticks. Attach (they come with magnetic base) one to the hitch and one to the side of the truck bed as a more visible line of sight.

@@MountainBeaches Yes, we watched the video. Great job on it. We don’t use the noodle, however we did try a tennis ball on a magnet. We found so far a line on the hitch and two strips of tape inside the rear of the bed to line up using the camera works fairly well. One of us will still spot the other but not while standing behind the dually. Sometimes it just doesn’t matter what you do, it can take a couple of try’s.
I have same hitch. I have an extended B&W ball (3” tall) to clear my toolbox, plus I use a wireless Iball camera with monitor. It has a magnetic base and I mount it right behind the ball….I can line it up with no help. I also put a bright orange tape strip on the hitch and that helps line up. Another tip, I put clear shrink wrap plastic tubing around chains so they don’t kink. Long story but had a bolt snap due to chain kinking causing it to shorten chain. Great video…thanks for sharing.
I was looking at the Goosebox until I bought our current truck with the Multipro Tailgate. I'm hoping to use the inner tailgate only when backing the truck to the kingpin. We'll see how that works out. Also, we use snappads on our leveling jacks - helps protect them plus the Andersons are a bit bulky. Suggestion for lining up the ball - if you have the Furrion Wireless Camera system, if you only have the rear camera, get one of the cameras with the Clearance light and mount it on the side of the bed facing the ball. From a side-2-side perspective, put a piece of vertical tape on the rear cab window and another on the center of the trailer cap. When both are lined up (through the rearview mirror), you should be lined up with the ball.
Good point about the snappads taking less space. One advantage of the Anderson blocks over the snappads is that they require the landing gear to come down far less which makes it more stable.
I have to agree with Chris. Standing between the truck and trailer is so dangerous. Have you thought of getting a backup camera located so you can so the ball and hitch? I know of some trucks that come with one and have seen them in use and they work great.
We love our Reese. Aligning it up when backing up is a challenge. We painted a white line in the bed of the truck and on the nose of the hitch. Now Oma only has to yell stop when I'm over the ball. BTW- don't forget to grease the ball!

I have the same setup except the 20K version. I do have the Ft. Knox lock as well. l have a couple of suggestions. First I added a strip of white tape down the centerline of the goosebox so that it can be lined up when hitching. I notice you have a SuperDuty. We have an F350 superduty with a toolbox as well. I installed two additional cameras. One was on the side of the bed that was pointed at the ball. This allows me to see when I’m far enough into the bed. The camera is hooked into the Ford system as the AUX camera. (See Big Truck Big RV’s RUclips channel on this.) the second camera I installed was a wireless Furion camera onto the back of the toolbox so that I could see the ball since the Ford High Center Mount camera is blocked by the toolbox. So with the Furion monitor and the Ford aux camera I can see both sides of the ball as I back in. I know when I’m perfectly lined up.
Sharing this with friends that have a Fifth Wheel 👍 Both the Reese and Fort Knox…very nice! I have to thank you for the Fort Knox suggestion. I need a much better, more brawny locking locking mechanism for our side by side. Hopefully Fort Knox makes something like that! Thank you 😊 Safe travels!
Great post thanks. Super dangerous standing between in truck bed & the trailer when doing this!!!!!!!! I've been a Paramedic 15 yrs, you don't want be there anytime truck is not in park!!!!!!!
Great educational video. Even though we have a bumper pull. It’s great to learn about the other RV technology’s. Loved Norms cotter pin solution! Very clever🤣 👍 I am sure some day that will come in handy!
I'm in the process of purchasing a 303RLS and am so happy to have found your channel! I'm wanting to do the same hitch set up as you but have a 2020 F250 short bed so am concerned about clearance issues with the tailgate, side rails, and of course the cab on tight turns. I know B&W make an offset ball that would likely resolve my concerns with cab clearance, but might make tailgate/side rail clearance even worse. I would appreciate feedback from you or anyone else that have used this setup on a short bed. Thanks and happy RV'ing!.
I don't think the clearance of the side rails will change whether you have a short or long bed, but not sure about the tailgate. I used to have a Ram Mega cab which essentially is a short bed and I was always concerned about the cab, but that was when I was using the Anderson hitch. I think my best advice would be to contact Reese directly and get their opinion.
Why did you have to put the tailgate up before backing up far enough to line up hitch? Would it have contacted the trailer? Did you have to do that with your old hitch? If not is the goose box shorter than your original pin box?
Nice! I noticed you switched hitches a while back. We are using the Andersen with our Solitude and like it. I have been eyeing the Reese as well. Still on the fence about the composting toilet though.
I have a full gooseneck hitch. Have you tried using the magnetic tennis ball post? I find them very easy.. I just back up until the tennis ball post is knocked over off the hitch ball, bingo I'm done. Usually by myself. I also have air bags so I can raise the truck into the hitch and I have a remote for my landing gear so I can raise the goose neck or drop the trailer while I back under.
Thx MB for well produced and informative video. I like you have RGB mine is 4/20k#s We're on 3rd year with it on our 18k# 40' TH. I have '15 GMC DCDA DRW long bed which I use Curt GN to universal rails adaptor as when I ordered and purchase GM had no puck system and my previous TH had 5th Airborn/AUH. I had installed 2nd extended ball 12" to rear on adaptor plate that gives me 10" clearance from underside of over hang on trl to bedrails and shorter overlap of truck and trlr. This setup is used like a sliding 5th wheel for off road use as I would not want to drive with that weight transfer also put's nose of trlr above 13'6" legal OTR height. Due to my location on safety chains tie downs I don't need to unhooksafety chains just chock tires lower forward jacks unlock ball raise Jack's move truck forward 1' and reconnect unchock air up Goose neck to get max extension and away we go off road. Thx for you taking us on your travels with beautiful, informative and entertaining videos.
Hey Norm, I`m a bit late to leave you a comment. I viewed your video pretty much the same day you posted it. It's funny that you created this days after I PM'ed you asking about your favorite hitch setup that you used over the years... Thank you! I guess now you'll have to try the Gen-Y Executive torsion flex and provide feedback! Cheers. Jacques
Great video to show the hitch and hookup. I am concerned having Kim in between the truck and FW during backup. I would suggest a magnetic mount backup camera, had one, worked great for my previous truck as I could not see the FW hitch due to the type of tonneau cover. I just put the magnetic wireless camera in the back on the tool box, the screen just plugged into the 12v socket for the driver. When not in use was just stored in the back door. Camping World - RVS Camera. Safe travels.
Interesting setup! Great job on the McGuyver cotter pin replacement. Do you feel the binder clip is any stronger than a traditional cotter pin? Thanks for your demo 🖖🏻👍🏻😘🙏🏻
To me it's amazing that the small ball can take all that weight and movement of that heavy trailer without coming off the connector there. I always thought that on a fifth wheel setup, the ball would be a lot bigger.
Nice video. Our new 5th wheel was converted with a goose neck hitch instead. Don't know brand but it is really jerky riding in the truck. Is this normal? Doesn't sound like that. I'm going to share video with my hubby. Ps our 5th wheel is a 2018 forest river salem hemisphere hyper lite 29rlshl. Haven't booked anything let for 2022 season. Don't know where to go near Ohio and a beach.
I really wanted to have the bed of my truck free of any hitch. The Anderson that I had was the steel version and weighted about 75 lbs. With a bad back I just wanted to remove obstacles for hurting it further.
Norm can I use it with a folding hard tonneau cover. I am purchasing a 2021 Ram 3500 that comes with pucks for a fifth wheel and gooseneck prep. Currently we are towing a travel trailer but hope to upgrade to a fifth wheel with your set up. But would like a Undercover Flex or BakFlip folding hard cover . Your thoughts.
I have a truck toolbox in my bed so I think you should be good with some sort of folding or roll up tonneau cover. Actually, now that I think of it, Chad from Changing Lanes has both a tool box AND a tonneau cover. Go check out that video.
@@MountainBeaches the one I have is four years old. It has a monitor that you power by sticking in a cigarette lighter. The newer ones allow you to use Bluetooth on your phone. Cameras power with nine volt battery. I’m thinking about buying a newer one and hardwire the power and use the Bluetooth on my phone. I’ve got enough monitors on the dash right now ( TPS, trailer back up, Garmin GPS and a phone). We have a 2018 Reflection 303 and love it. We have a Goosebox too. Trying to find an ebike rack for our two Lectric step throughs. It’s a chore getting them in the dining room area in crates. Love your videos. I’m working on solar right now. Moved my battery to the basement beside the steps. I use to have two - six volt lead acid. Using a pair of the new Battleborn 270 AH batteries. Almost the same as six regular Battleborns.

@@TLG78 Nice setup. We took our ebikes out of the totes because we had to then lift the totes. Now we just wheel them up/down the stairs and place them where our dining table used to be. We removed the dining table a while back and now have a desk table that we easily lay on it's side for travel and put the ebike bungie cord strapped together. They stay put.
OH DEAR LORD!!! 38 YEARS AS A FIREFIGHTER/EMT PLEASE DONT EVER STAND BETWEEN THE TRUCK AND TRAILER!!! IF HIS FOOT SLIPS OFF THE BREAK PEDAL IT WONT BE PRETTY!!! Glad you like the hitch and thank you for your feedback, we're looking at 5th wheels and this is priority 1 for the new rig! Enjoy!
A big advantage listed in a caption is that the Reese Goosebox is endorsed by Lippert and will not void the frame warranty. That's a big deal. Can't agree more with other comments about Kim standing "in the line of fire". Very dangerous. Maybe use flags on a small magnetic mounts.
There are stories of spouses getting run over by accident - plz, don't get out of sight or in between the truck and the rig! I must ask - if you have more room in the truck, don't you just fill it up with more stuff and weigh the same? Its either gonna be hitch or stuff, right?
If I would have seen this video I wouldn’t of needed to ask the question on the last video. Is there enough clearance to back up and do a 90 degree turn if you had too?
We have the 20K Reese Goosebox. We totally agree that there should be a cone/funnel that allows a little bit of wiggle room when lowering the trailer onto the ball. I have emailed Reese with this suggestion. I think all us owners need to reach out to them and suggest that they create a cone/funnel that fits onto the hitch.
The problem with those is that it puts a lateral force on the coupling, to line up it would either have to move the truck or the trailer. Thats not good
One more question Norm, does your Ford have an 8’ box? Just wondering about clearance between trailer and cab with my standard length Silverado HD. I also have a Reflection 303RLS (2018).
Yes I have the 8’ bed. When I had the Anderson Hitch I had a RAM 2500 Mega Cab and the bed was short. I did have to be careful when backing and turning to make sure the trailer didn’t hit the cab.
Norm, your video was very informative. I have a F250 with the short bed (6.5’) and a Weather Guard tool box (similar to your Tractor Supply box). Do you think I could use that hitch on my truck with the tool box, or would I have to take it out?
@@MountainBeaches Thanks for responding. Could you do me the favor of measuring the distance from the back of your box to the front of your ball socket? My measurement is 13”. How much additional margin do you have when your hitch is attached? Thanks!
@@pammac36 I actually think it would based on my use of the Anderson hitch previously in my Ram. You might try contacting Reese customer support and asking them.
@@MountainBeaches thanks I will do that! I use the Andersen now and have no clearance issues at all with my 2020 F250 and 2021 Jayco Eagle. Just might work. Watch all your videos! Best to you! Happy travels 😀
Norm, ya'gotta get Kim out from under the front of the RV; we don't want to see/hear of her being injured while assisting hitching up. "Money well spent" would be a camera system that you can see from inside the cab of the truck. Another YTer (BTBRV) uses similar hitch and has two cameras (?); one showing head-on view while the other shows a side-view of the Ball in the truck bed. For everyone peace of mind, DON'T have Kim between the truck and RV any longer, okay?!?!?! Y'all Be Safe!
Mmm i think the fifth wheel hitch is much better, I don’t need no one to help me hitch my truck to my trailer never the less putting someone in dangerous between the trailer and my tail gate/my truck 👎for the hitch 👍for both of you be safe and healthy
@@MountainBeaches Taking more time on hooking up your trailer is much better than putting in danger your lovely partner, happy travels to you both and God bless you both
@@guatemex68 thanks. We have been extremely careful and Kim has and knows her escape route if needed. Having said that, we are going to look at a better alternative.
At first I just matched exactly the pinbox I took off but then had to move it on position. I can't remember exactly but I think it is now in the lowest setting. I would take a look for you but our rig is in storage for another month.
Remember there are two objectives you are trying to achieve. 1) Having at least 6" of clearance between the truck bed rails and the underside of the trailer and 2) A level towing experience. Here's what I would do. I would start at the lowest setting, snug down all the bolts, but not torque them yet, and then connect to the tow vehicle. Measure the clearance and check for level towing. and then adjust if necessary from there.
Liked your video but please never stand between moving equipment. This is the second video I’ve seen in a week where the wife is standing between the truck and the camper. I hope this is not typical of what people are doing but they learn by example like this. Be safe and happy trails
Watch our most recent video :). We solved the danger issue. Just wondering if you’ve actually ever known of anyone getting hurt using our method? Thanks.
I JUST WAS GIFTED THE ANDERSON ULTIMATE HITCH. first trip is this weekend. But I’ve been hearing good stuff about this bitch setup. Is there any issues with contact on truck bed. I have a Silverado 2500 short bed 6’9”
First congrats on being gifted the Anderson. I had one prior to switching to the Reese and I have nothing but good things to say about it. The reason I switched was for two main reasons. 1) I now only have a ball in the bed of my truck. I don't have to remove ANYTHING now to use it. 2) The Reese has an integrated airbag and 2 shock absorbers and those give us the smoothest towing experience I've ever had. I had a RAM 2500 Mega Cab (it has a shorter bed) with the Anderson and I never had a problem with the side rails but I was extremely careful when backing while turning as there is the possibility of the cab of the trailer hitting the cab of the truck. Iv'e seen it more times than I'd care to admit. This is still an issue with probably any hitch except maybe a slider hitch though.
@@MountainBeaches does the new Reese have about same clearance on turns. And last since you have had the Anderson did you set ball low , medium, or high. I really appreciate your quick responses.
NEVER STAND BETWEEN TRUCK AND TRAILER WHILE HITCHING UP. If drivers foot slips on pedal or driver has medical issue while truck is in gear. You would be pinned between truck and rv. That is number one rule with hitching up truck to anything. Glad nothing has happene. Safe travels.
That is dangerous I have a solution I use works every time. I bought one of those swim noodles cut it to 8" slip it over the ball and just watch in your mirror when backing up, just line to middle of pin box till it hits and bends toward you and your good to go. This way Kim can stay alive,,, I can email you pics of my setup
NICE WORK. DON'T FOR GET TO TEST THE BALL LOCK BY RUNNING THE LANDING GEAR DOWN AN RAISE THE TRAILER AND VISUALLY CHECK THE SEE THE ASS END OF THE TRUCK RAISES AS THE LANDING GEAR RAISES THE TRAILER. THIS MAKES SURE THE BALL LOCK IS LOCKED. AND DO A TEST TUG TO CHECK THE CONNECTION OF THE GOOSEBALL IN THE HITCH. JUST A COUPLE THINGS I LEARNED OVER THE YEARS
FYI ... Reese & eTrailer are Pulling a fast one on their "new" hitches. VERY UNHAPPY!! First - The Reese pinbox came without installation hardware or directions. The hardware took a month for them to replace and again came without directions. Second - The Reese pinbox DOES NOT have the air valve as pictured on the websites. When I called I was told it was due to a parts shortage and the person I spoke to at Reese even told me that the new set-up was a dumb design. I TOTALLY AGEE! Send me the part! To inflate one person has to literally crawl under the pinbox, while hitched to the 5th wheel, to inflate while another watches the bar. Not easy for a 60+ year old fat man! The valve faces OPPOSITE the side where the inflation bar is located! Plus, the valve is so close to the wall of the box (picture) you cannot install an extension hose. Just Dumb. After follow ups with eTrailer, I were basically informed by Hannah that I have to live with it. Either that, or I could pay to ship it back. Mean while, both Reese & eTrailer are selling parts that are not as shown on the website. NO - NOT HAPPY!
@@MountainBeaches I purchase it 6 weeks ago - one would think it would be the next Gen (3). Nope! They sent me a leftover Gen 2 that they don't have all the parts for. I was told by eTrailer that I would have to pay to return (pallet & truck). Great customer service! They know they are wrong but they tell you to deal with it. When I spoke to Reese, Paul told me what I was shipped was a stupid solution that their engineers came up with. The valve is so tight to the pinbox wall you cannot attach an extension hose.

Awesome suggestion. Thank you, I'm going to look into that.
Thanks Katherine.

Glad it was helpful!
Use a telescoping magnet in your truck bed for alignment
Great idea
We love our goose box, it saves so much room. We also use the Anderson blocks.
That's awesome.
Good video y’all my only concern would be that it seems very dangerous for Kim to be between the tailgate and the camper
Yep, we're working on a new backup plan that is safer. Thanks.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Very timely for us.
Glad it was helpful!
The tailgate will only hit the trailer if I go too far back. It's just a precaution.
Great Job!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice! I noticed you switched hitches a while back. We are using the Andersen with our Solitude and like it. I have been eyeing the Reese as well. Still on the fence about the composting toilet though.
Awesome. Yea we realize the composting toilet is not for everyone. I had my reservations at first too.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing and we’re so glad to have you follow us along. Thanks again.
Cheers. Jacques
Hey Jack. I think for now I'm sticking with the Reese. I have to pay for these with my own money haha.
Great information - thank you!
Our pleasure. Thanks so much.
Thanks for you concern and tips. Watch this video to see what we did to keep Kim safe: ruclips.net/video/rTxc5q-lrKY/видео.html

2way radios are always helpful.
Yes they are, and we use ours when we don't have cell service. We prefer to use our cell phones because Norm can do it hands free inside the truck.
Interesting setup! Great job on the McGuyver cotter pin replacement. Do you feel the binder clip is any stronger than a traditional cotter pin? Thanks for your demo 🖖🏻👍🏻😘🙏🏻
The binder clip was just an emergency fix until I can find a cotter pin.
To me it's amazing that the small ball can take all that weight and movement of that heavy trailer without coming off the connector there. I always thought that on a fifth wheel setup, the ball would be a lot bigger.
They are engineered to work that way.
This is the same ball size used for mobile homes, goosenecks etc rated 30,000 lbs.
I put a duck tap line in the bed and tailgate to help line up my goose box.
Hey thanks!
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
No that is not normal imo. Ours pulls very very smoothly. Keep watching, we will be announcing a HUGE giveaway later this month.
A hitching camera would also help. Check with etrailer.
Great suggestion. Thanks.
Great vidéo, how mutch weight your fifth wheel ? Thanks
The GVWR IS 11,995 lbs
Why did you stop using the Anderson hitch?
I really wanted to have the bed of my truck free of any hitch. The Anderson that I had was the steel version and weighted about 75 lbs. With a bad back I just wanted to remove obstacles for hurting it further.
I have watched your video on this pin box several times. I see your truck but is it a 8ft bed or 6.5 or so bed? I have a 337rls and was curious.
We have the 8’ bed and love it. My last 2 trucks had the shorter bed. Worked ok (I had the Anderson hitch then) but much prefer the long bed.
I use a small backup camera in the bed of my truck. I hook up by myself with no issues.
The camera has a magnetic base that allows me to stick it to my auxiliary fuel tank.
Sounds like a great idea. Do you have a link you can share?

OH DEAR LORD!!! 38 YEARS AS A FIREFIGHTER/EMT PLEASE DONT EVER STAND BETWEEN THE TRUCK AND TRAILER!!! IF HIS FOOT SLIPS OFF THE BREAK PEDAL IT WONT BE PRETTY!!! Glad you like the hitch and thank you for your feedback, we're looking at 5th wheels and this is priority 1 for the new rig! Enjoy!
Well said
A big advantage listed in a caption is that the Reese Goosebox is endorsed by Lippert and will not void the frame warranty. That's a big deal.
Can't agree more with other comments about Kim standing "in the line of fire". Very dangerous. Maybe use flags on a small magnetic mounts.
Thanks
There are stories of spouses getting run over by accident - plz, don't get out of sight or in between the truck and the rig! I must ask - if you have more room in the truck, don't you just fill it up with more stuff and weigh the same? Its either gonna be hitch or stuff, right?
I guess that could be true but I’d rather have the weight for payload than wasted on a hitch. We have a toolbox for our bed but that’s about it.
Maybe paint landing stripes in the bed of the truck
Thanks.
If I would have seen this video I wouldn’t of needed to ask the question on the last video. Is there enough clearance to back up and do a 90 degree turn if you had too?
Yes
May I ask what is the length of your truck bed, and if it's a shortbed what is the turning radius?? TIA!
8 ft long bed.
I would love one of those bc I hate having to put the hitch in the truck bed! How high is your sides of your truck? Was that a issue?
Measuring from the center of the tire, our side rails are 58" above the ground. We do not have any problem getting at least 6" of clearance.
We just bought a new trailer but our hitch is not tall enough to clear our bed so trying to figure out one that will work
Is there any disadvantages when turning?
None that I am aware of. I have a long bed and can pretty much get it to 90 degrees.
Totally agree.
The problem with those is that it puts a lateral force on the coupling, to line up it would either have to move the truck or the trailer. Thats not good
How mutch weight your fifth wheel to have made the choice of getting a 20k ? Thanks
is that binder clip fastener as thick and as strong as a cotter pin?
Great question. I'm not sure, but it was only a temporary fix until I could get it replaced.
I have the 8’ bed, I don’t think the tool box will work with the 6’5 bed.
@@MountainBeaches Thanks for responding. Could you do me the favor of measuring the distance from the back of your box to the front of your ball socket? My measurement is 13”. How much additional margin do you have when your hitch is attached? Thanks!
We’re in Mexico for another week but if I remember when I get home I’d be happy to get that for you.
What did you do with your old king pin

8’ bed
@@MountainBeaches thanks for getting back! Was hoping you had the 6.75 bed! Would love this hitch, don't think it will work with a short bed...☹

That's how we always done it but thanks for the good advice, we'll look at the options.

at what setting did you put the bolts thru the pin box.....lowest setting? or?

@@bslife1 Hmm, I think I had it set high but not sure. I now have a F350 long bed so can't compare the turns.

That’s very dangerous having Kim behind the truck bed
Look for one of our later videos where we fixed that situation.
That is dangerous I have a solution I use works every time. I bought one of those swim noodles cut it to 8" slip it over the ball and just watch in your mirror when backing up, just line to middle of pin box till it hits and bends toward you and your good to go.
Sorry to hear that. We've not seen the new design.
