The first time I heard the majority of lateralus was the night it came out. It was the second time I saw Tool live and it was at my favorite venue; The Atlanta Tabernacle. Truly words cannot describe the experience we had that night. The energy in that little gothic venue between the fans and the incredible reveal of Tools epic new album and ultra psychedelic stage show with twisted visuals surrounding the band as they flooded our psyche like a rush of serotonin cresting the peek of a wave of LSD crashing onto the new millennium.
It was all brand new, totally unexpected, and a total mind fuck. I so hope that the band has some footage of that night that may see some sort of live release one day.

Saw them, I believe on this tour. 1998 in Santa Barbara, CA. Maynard came out in the dress and said he wanted to honor Barbara Streisand. First concert I went to w/o my parents (I was 17) and it was the best concert I've ever been to. Saw them a few more times after that and they're nothing short of amazing every time. If you guys REALLY want to see what a professional Maynard is, check out this video of them performing Pushit. A fan runs on stage, Maynard goes to hug him, does a little judo flip on the guy, takes his back and continues singing. One of the craziest things I've ever seen from a band. Then the fan starts throwin his fist up w/ the beat.

Imagine Maynard hiptossing a dude from the crowd, and then sitting on him and continuing the song, yelling in his ear "You're pushing, and shoving, and scrambling, to keep my feet flat on the ground"... this actually happening. it's an amazing video (not the best audio, but if you know the song, you get it)

  • @mattsiev1

You have to see them! Every concert is a unique experience. You already see the depth because you are artists too but it's not until you see a full set live that it makes sense. It's an experience to which every detail is preconceived, well thought out and then executed brilliantly. There are different crowds there for different reasons all vibing on the same jams. A/V geeks because of course the stage production itself is a work of art, the general scene is a true melting pot and everyone can get behind that and the musicianship is second to none. Timely breakdowns are a prevelant aspect to a lot of heavy shows. Breakdowns with poly rhythms are that much better and what make it mind blowing is, get this, they don't use a click track. The lighting dude, every band member and anyone keeping the show moving has to be on point all night. That experience is not being replicated to sold out stadiums by any other band. They truly may be the best band on the planet.

I've seen TOOL live maybe 3 times & APC twice. But TOOL's live performances are spectacular. They've gotten more & more intricate over the years. Laser lights that function along with the rhythm. MJK silhouetted in front of a screen that plays all types of TOOL vidoes & art work, etc. The theatrics of their live shows have lead them to be occasionally referred to as "The New Era Pink Floyd.' I'm not a mosh pit person. I always get tickets with a seat so I can sit back, blaze one(or 2 or 3), ingest some magical spore of fungi & watch & enjoy the physical talent they display on their respective instruments. TOOL just so happens, in my opinion, to consist of the absolute very best vocalist/lyricist, bassist, guitar player & drummer... in my era/generation, in the rock/metal/prog/etc. genre & possibly of all time.

During the tour, The Melvins were the supporting act. Buzz Melvin joined them on stage every now and then for some songs. Another note, the song didn’t have complex time signatures because it’s a cover from the band Peach. That’s Justin Chancellors band prior to joining took.
You can’t fully appreciate them until you see them live. My friends and I always make it a point to buy a ticket to bring someone who has never seen them before. It’s a pleasure to watch someone experience them for the first time. When they go on tour again, you should have a viewing party for your fans. Let us know what section your in snd er can get tickets around you. The looks on your faces when they hit the stage would be priceless.

I've loved Tool since the video for Sobor was on Mtv, but I've never seen them live. I'm a broke hillbilly joker in WV. I've only ever seen Godsmack, Disturbed and Metallica (black tour) live. Seen lots of locals when I was young, but that's about it. It'd be nice but, I try not to dwell on what I don't have, and just make the best of what I do have. Less stress on the mind that way. But if I could have what I wanted, it'd be to be a fly on the wall after the show. To see them naturally, as ppl, not just great performers. That, or to be in maynerd's head for 10 mins (cos I'm not sure I could handle any longer in there).

@Syx during the last tour they had a semi transparent curtain that went around the front of the stage and had images projected onto it. Then halfway through the show they drop the curtain and theres a giant screen behind the band playing all the cool tool imagery their albums and videos are famous for. And lasers. Lots and lots of lasers and smoke.

@Syx at least a quarter of the audience is on acid. One of the funniest things to me is seeing the smoke machines go off but then random people in the audience letting our giant puffs of marijuana smoke straig up into the air. It's almost like a whack a mole popping up left and right but its weed smoke lol

Everyone in the Tool Army knows that, if you are going to start watching videos of them live, you absolutely MUST start with the infamous "Part of Me" of 1998 featuring Reverend Maynard.

The song "H" live from New York 2002. Only slightly better quality than this but it still never seizes to amaze. My favourite live moment from tool is on that performance. Except from when I got to see them live in person ofcourse...

Keep it up guys, you'll see them. During the last show in AC, no lie that every baseline, riff and cymbal crash could be felt through the concrete, and I was in the rafters!

And the lack of time signature changes is due to the fact that this is a cover song from the band peach a band that Justin Chancellor was the basist for but the fact that tool covered it and Justin Chancellor is in tool now is fucking amazing Maynard killed those vocals and his dancing is hard to describe but it's like his body moves to each sound of the instruments as they play almost like he's possessed by an entity trying to learn how to use a human body and that fucking scream omg I don't care what anybody says Maynard scream is the most intense screen I've ever heard no one can do what he does live this band is so fucking legendary

1999 Tool Coachella (Epic performance) was the last time (I think) where Maynard is out front on stage. Ever since he is on a platform in the background.

The best TOOL live footage I've ever seen is their full set at Coachella 1999. It's on YT, you gotta check it out. The ending is INSANE!!!👍👍I believe Maynard has/had a lot of stage fright, and I think the outfits were at least partially meant as a means for him to hide a little so he could perform with the right emotion.

The best live performances that I can think of is the new york 2000 I believe it was (mind blowing) and then the glass house live performance in their earlier years, that one is amazing and Maynard is all over the place but looks high as hell. It was their first live aenema performance which he announced good news is you guys get to hear it the first time, bad news is you get the un-ironed version (but it was absolutely amazing!!! Then if you wanna do something fun watch (tool: the fan incident( the one that says don't push it in the video title).... Either three of those are amazing. Wish I knew the concert where he said sorry the first three songs suck, just waiting for the acid to kick in. Then all of a sudden that one turned amazing. Funny as hell.

Also they have some a few songs that they have been playing around with some variations like stinkfist and schism that I've seen live. I've seen them play lateralis with a 3 way drum battle in the middle of the breakdown. Wild stuff
