Your videos have been a huge help. I like the no frills, shadetree production, and commitment to providing just the information required without attempts to show off how much you know about these cars. Finally got the thermostat housing/waterpipe(OEM) installed, system wasn't working correctly after all of that and then this video helped me properly bleed the system and make sure the temps stayed at/around 200-220F under load with Distilled water and the heater blows piping hot now.
Don't know exactly how much a dealership or a mechanic would have charged for this, but I can guarantee it was more than $100 in parts and a few jugs of coolant/distilled water. Added bonus, I can now do this job with confidence and likely blindfolded if I had to do it again.
Thanks a bunch.
Thank you! Would you be okay with me sharing this comment?
@@ProjectMini No problem w/ that at all.
Good Job on both the Thermostat Replacement and Coolant Bleed videos.
Thank you 🙏
I couldn't see where the bleeder screw is but at least I know there is one, Just put a new used automatic transmission in in What a job that is, but thought I might have to bleed the coolant system of air, that's why I'm here. Great tips on your videos.
good tip, thanks
Love the videos so do you like the R6 0r R53 !
Awesome video 👍🏽
Thank you 🙏
Your awesome 😎
What temps normally does yours run at and when does the engine fan kick in?:)
Thanks!
So I replace a bunch of hoses after one of them got a hole and the others were on their way out. Opened bleeder for a while with the cap off and the car running then closed the bleeder and put the cap on and went around the block. When I got back the coolant dipped below the min line and had bubbles coming up from the bottom. Did I not let it get hot enough or leave the bleeder open long enough or something else?
What would you do if the fan don’t seem to be kicking in ? Tia
Hi, I had to replace water pump. First I drained the coolant. Got out almost 5 litres. Then after installing new pump I added new fresh coolant. But only got in like 4.8 litres. Followed the bleeding screw un tightening procedure to get in as much coolant as possible. Got engine running all good.
But now in the expansion tank, on the section of the vent hose, there is coolant. Is this Normal?
I wish I can add a photo.
I wonder if there is still air in the system.
Thanks
Hi mate I have tried this run the engine till bubbles stop coming from the bleed screw tighten screw and put expansion cap back on short run in the car. When I stop and undo the bleed screw again I seem to get a massive amount of air come out the screw tried this afew times and same each time lots of air but no coolant leaks no gunk in top of oil cap any ideas
Hi just looking for some advice. Done a headgasket as the was pressure building in the coolant system. Done a block test came back positive.
I have done the headgasket also waterpump and thermostat and radiator also changed all pulleys and tensioner. Ran the car for about 20mins started to make pressure in the cooling system I opened the bleed nipple on the thermostat to were I was able to take it out and there was no coolant coming out.
Any ideas.
What if you open the bleeder screw and no air are fluid comes out
Great videos! I replaced my thermostat and the engine is still overheating. I think I didn't bleed it correctly or enough. How many times did you bleed it? Did you ever have that issue. I checked for leaks and didn't find any at the water pump. So, hoping its the air being trapped.
Mine never over heated. I don’t remember off hand how many times i bled it but it was around three times. I bled it, drove it for about 20 minutes and then bled it again. Then at least one more time after a full day of driving
David Wong Yo did you fix it? what was the solution?
If my overfill tank isn’t draining then what might be the issue?
hello from a new subscriber
😁
thank you for this video
👍
I must also change my thermostats and the pipe
... 😅
how many liters (gallons) of antifreeze have you put in the engine?
thank you for your future answer 👍
I buy 1 gallon of coolant and 1 gallon of distilled water and try for a 50/50 mix
@@ProjectMini thank you for your reply
👍
did you use g12 + antifreeze?
I thought to use the pure g12 + as recommended by the manufacturer mini
sorry for my english i live in belgium ....😁
I used Mini brand coolant and distilled water only
@@ProjectMini ok thank a lot for your reply
and thank for your video you help me a lot 👍
No problem, thank you for watching and subscribing!
He refers to the climatronics when he says AC i think. Fill up the coolant reservoir, open the bleed screw till all air has escaped and a little coolant trickles out. Start the engine with the heater on max temp, bleed till no more air bubbles come out. Feeling if the air from the vents are hot will be your telltale that your heading to the right direction. Drive vehicle making sure its enough distance to have thermostat atleast open. Repeat process if needed... do this daily and haven't had a overheat yet.
Changed my thermostat bit car wont reach operating temp.Stays at 72/73f Code P0128 Any ideas? Thanks
My mini cooper S 2008 coolant levels are dropping quickly. No visible leaks. Any suggestions or areas to check? When I rev the engine in idle there's a noise of liquid passing through a tube behind the dashboard. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated : )
Had this happen to me, theres a clamp underneath the expansion tank that had perished and was letting coolant out, might be worth a look
Hello!!!! I've recently replaced a water pump, head gasket and thermostat on my 2013 mini cooper none turbo, (cause)it was mixing radiator fluid and oil. After that I proceed to flush the radiator and as I go back to putting corect amount of radiator fluid and starting her up she does it again. Thoughts?
You replaced the head gasket and its still happening? I believe the issue is, you just haven't flushed all the oil out of the coolant. little bits of oil will still be in the system so flush it over and over until you stop seeing oil in it. best thing to do is to let it sit for an hour or so and let oil rise to the top so you can see if there is oil in it. if none shows up it means its been properly flushed. Look up Chris Fix Coolant Flush on RUclips. its the one titled "How to SUPER FLUSH your Cars Cooling System" Very informative video ahah.
Question, the dealership replaced my housing a while back and I and replacing my oil filter housing gasket. The temp sensor is over the bleeder screw, can the sensor be turned to get to the screw.
You just need a long screwdriver to get to it. Its a straight shot
at what temperature should the coolant fans come on
I'd like to see what the bleeder screw looks like and where it is on the engine
on the thermostat housing

@@ProjectMini expensive lawn mowers eh dude lol
What would cause your mini to not suck down any coolant? Water pump was known good before thermostat replacement. Now it doesn’t take any water. Including if allowed to go up to temp.
You have to set heat to full blast and fan on low with key to ON but not started FIRST. That’s the bleeding process. Otherwise you can overheat.
I’ve never overheated 🤷♂️
Hello, can you please help me? I start the bleeding proccess but the expansion tank dont stop burpling and in my bleed screes dont stop coming steam ? What can i do?
I'm a mechanic, sometimes I need to close the bleeder screw rev the engine up to 2,500 Rpms and hold it for two minutes then go and open the bleeder screw, you might need to repeat this process multiple times , eventually coolant will pour out of the bleeder screw, if it hisses when opening there is still air in the system
I’ve replaced the thermostat in my mine 2009 and filled the bottle up , opened the bleeder Started the motor , basic done everything in the video , but not a drop of coolant coming through , any ideas please
Yeah same here...I opened the valve and no coolant or air bubbles came out. I even pressured the tank with a coolant pressure tester and opened the valve and no coolant came out to the point where I took the screw off and still nothing.
Have you guys tried raising the passenger side of the car up in the air while the car is running then bleeding the system?
great shots of your fingers
Any one know what that knock sound is, I have that exact same sound on my car don't know if it's bad but I only hear it around cylinders closest to the transmision
Its your direct injection. My car sounds normal
Anybody doing a t-stat housing is crazy if you do not do the plastic water pipe as well. It runs under the intake manifold from t-stat housing to the backside of water pump. Mine was disintegrated from heat cycles and had obviously been leaking.
Is there a factory Torq on the Bleeder Screw? I have broken one and now stripped the housing. I feel I am being gentle. Bye and Bye good videos.
Not that I’ve seen, i just barely tighten it
how i can replace on my own the expansion tank?one r 56
Take out the one bolt that’s holding it on and remove both hoses.
Put it back together with the new tank and then bleed the system
Did you have a leak
Im having an issue with my 2008 mini cooper s r56 overheating at idle and I was wondering if you have any ideas of what it could be
Have you checked for codes?
@@ProjectMini I have and it doesn't seem to be giving me anything about the cooling system
It could be any part of the coolant system. I would try bleeding the system first since that’s free
@@ProjectMini ok thank you I'll try doing that a few times
Make sure your low speed fan is kicking in
Brother, great vid BUT it's time to invest in some type of camera and stand. It's kinda hard to see where the screw is because your covering it.
That’s the older video, here’s the new one that is much better.
R56 Mini Cooper S coolant system flush & bleed (How to) ruclips.net/video/JPr9cD3A9OY/видео.html
lol I just replied the same thing.
Theres any way i can contact you ?
I appreciate the effort but the camera doesn't actually show where the screw is or what you're doing in there. We can't see the coolant coming out or where it's supposed to happen.
The is only one screw on the thermostat housing. That’s the one you turn to bleed the coolant
@@ProjectMini thanks my man! You are saving us all big money with these videos and we get to enjoy our Mini Coopers even more!
I believe That coolant is 50/50 already. It’s in the fine print on the back of bottle. At least it was for me
In 30 years of being a bmw tech, including mini, I’ve never heard of opening your thermostat with the ac. Am I missing something here?
Hey buddy whats the best way to open the thermostat? Is it done with heating on full & fan on low with the car turned on with engine running, im about to do this job so would be great to know your thoughts.
How do you do it at bmw please do tell so people can try that way
Camera down buddy....camera down...Nice shot of your thumb.
Couldn't see where the bleed screw was or rate of bleeding. Sorry but it didn't help at all.
Thanks!
No problem, sorry it took so long
@@ProjectMini no worries! I'll use your videos for reference once I change my thermostate
