Gator Bite, what do you do?!?

  • What do you do if you get bit by an alligator??? Well, it’s a lot more complicated than people think and it totally depends on why the gator is biting you!! I run through some of the possibilities here, but the best plan is to avoid the situation in the first place!! Never feed a wild gator, never have kids or pets near the water’s edge, never swim in gator habitat and always keep a safe distance!
~You can come swim with me and Casper! If you want to come join you can book online now, go to www.crocodilechris.com Let me know if you want to go! Observation and photos only at @evergladesoutpost and tour participants are separated from gators by safety fence. Remember all the gators you see me working with are rescue nuisance gators, caught from the wild as big as you see them now! The state kills 7k-8k each year. We volunteer our time to catch & rescue them and bring them to sanctuaries, unpaid. Wetsuit by @cressi1946

It's obvious that reading the body language of a crocodilian accurately, and figuring out which mode they're in and then responding appropriately, requires a lot of skill and experience, which most of us don't have. But having some options, any options, is better than nothing. I think a lot of us have seen the video of the young female trainer in Utah(?) whose hand got bit, and we saw the different things she did to minimize the damage before she had any help. All of these videos are useful and repeated viewings can help if we really want to understand this subject.

Chris, this was a fantastic video. I learn so much from you and could listen to you for hours. Question, I’ve seen videos of crocodiles grab prey, lift their head up out of the water, then slam the prey item on top of the water. Do alligators do that?
Also, I guess you’ve heard about the 13 year old teen that was bitten by an alligator. He’s fine but now they’ve set traps to catch the alligator to kill or remove it, not sure which. But the guy from fish and wildlife said they must keep the waterways safe. That angers me so much. That’s the alligator’s home and people should know not to swim in their habitat. Is it possible you could get the alligator and save it from being killed? I love crocodilians and wish people would realize how important they are to the ecosystem. I think they are amazing animals. And I just adore Casper. He is so cute. Look forward to more videos. Love and respect from Tennessee. 🥰🐊

I’m not at the place yet where I can say that I appreciate gators. As a kayaker, I’m afraid of these dinosaurs. I’m thinking of my friend who got bit while in her kayak in the water. She slid up next to him and didn’t see it beneath the water. It felt threatened. She turned her body quickly as soon as she heard it launch from the water. It grazed her arm and broke the skin, but wasn’t able to clamp down on her arm. As I’ve mentioned on this channel before, she has a gator tooth shaped scar on her forearm., which is a pretty cool show n’ tell scar. You have a better chance of being hit by lightening in SW FL than being bit by a gator.

Living in Florida, I’d say the golden rule is just to respect them and their space. That will keep you from 90% of any problems. The only time I’ve seen gators particularly come after humans, is ones where they have been fed and lose their fear of us.
Most of the time in the wild, gators are just chilling in or near the water and don’t want nothing to do with us unless they see we are being stupid (playing in the water/making lots of noise, have our kids in the water, etc). They are generally pretty docile otherwise, unless it’s another with a nest or they feel their space is being invaded.

Story time! When I was around 16, I was camping with my Boy Scout troop. One day, we were fishing at a lake and one of the scouts dad caught a big fish. What we didn’t saw was the alligator going after the hooked fish as well! After he pulled the fish out, alligator came right onto land where the fish laid next to it with jaws wide open. We assumed it wanted the fish and backed away immediately to not alert it. The alligator though backed up into the water and swam away. Don’t remember what the dad did to the fish, but it was definitely a crazy experience I would never forget!

I'd guess that's defensive, but I don't know. Good question.

Thank you so much for sharing. I had to stop watching because the whole convo gave me so much anxiety. I live in Florida and have them living behind our yard and all over our neighborhood. I just make sure I look before opening the door.

Hi Chris Former zoo keeper here Worked mostly with mammals but occasionally with reptiles at the zoo veterinary. My question: the alligators seem very docile in your videos but I have seen alligators strike with lightning speed. If Casper wanted to get you, how would you be able to predict a strike as he is floating by? Aren't you in danger if he really wanted to attack? Great videos and narrative. Thanks and please continue to stay safe!

Not Chris, but from what I’ve seen, I’m assuming his answer would be along the lines of “Casper doesn’t have a reason to attack me. He knows I’m not a threat or prey from prior experience”

At first I always thought you had a pocket taser hidden in your suit, then I realized we were dealing with a realistic pro who was aware of the danger at every second.

Now. You need to try going to swim and interact with Nile crocodiles, Australia salt water crocodiles, and those big Australia freshwater crocs.
And we need to hear all about it. ❤❤

I’ve done several trips to Africa diving with wild nile crocs, also handled many in captivity, and used to do hand feeding shows with a saltwater croc. All pics and videos on my Facebook

Wow. So ultimately a battle with a human and a gator in the water comes down to who's gonna drown the other first? That's crazy. Thanks for the video mate.

I have a question/hypothesis based on what you told us about their predatory curiosity as they approach: before the gator completely closed the gap, would it be beneficial to try and push yourself vertically up to expose more of your actual size? I think that for the smaller ones you talked about, some could be deterred by it just by seeing "oh that's kinda big".
anyway thank you for your content mate! cheers from Serbia

Thank you for the great video. Im just confused on how you know the motivation. You suggest that sometimes you never strike at them because that never works, other times you fight back with all your life. I’m not sure about the defensive motivation, every Gator Hunt I have been on when we snare the gator and drag them close to the shore, or pull them on land, they always just give up. It’s always been amazing to me that they don’t fight back as powerful as they are.

The point is also to realize what type of situation you are in..the 4 types..a couple years ago there was that famous video from a girl in a zoo which got the deathroll and a visitor sat on the back of the alligator…maybe you can analyse that video and explain what happened etc

Interesting! I wanted to ask you about Toothy's bite to Chandler when he (and you and many others) were catching her for transport to Chandler's property. That sounds like it would have been a defensive bite, right? The "i think these people are trying to kill me and I need to kill them first". You said it would be immediate bite and death roll. But she barely bit him and let him go. (Nevermind 'barely bit him' still landed him in the hospital for four days lol.) So was that not defensive after all? Terratorial since you guys were in her enclosure? Or is this how you said that crocs and gators are very different? I would love an analysis/break down of that situation from you. Cause you were right there at the edge of the pond to witness it.

    • @GatorChris_

So you are correct that it was defensive, but it was in murky water, and she really seem to have just slashed him but not actually bit him. Like the jaws slashed across his leg and he had two deep cuts but the jaws didn’t actually close on his flesh. If they had, I think she would’ve rolled his leg right off
