    Nice tools you have there Thomas and the thermal camera and app looks like it could come in handy there. I noticed in one of the comments about you mentioning that some viewers have other ways of doing things. You know, I've got the same kind of comments on some of my videos. So, I go right to their channels and never see a single video posted. Don't worry about them Thomas and keep chunking along just like you're doing which is just fine...

      +Badgertronix The thermal camera was a toy for me... but it actually helped diagnose a few issues since I bought it. Heated seats, climate control, exhaust, cooling system etc. Great little tool to have when "the usual" methods don't find anything.

    Great video Thomas! I know it's an older vid, but I hoped you could answer a question for me. I have a 2002 Beetle 2.0 and the fans don't turn on until 105c. Where should I start checking for problems? FCM or fans themselves or somewhere else? Thanks for such an informative video!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 лет назад

      Lifting After Dark Do the fans sound loud? Could be that both low speeds are burnt out. Activat low speed manually to see if they come on. If not, then you'll need to replace the fans. Active via bridging the low speed at the radiator fan switch.

    RE the vacuum filling tool be careful using the gauge to push into the rubber adapter because if it twists the back plate fouls the needle, also how come you never used the knurled screw when you were pushing into the neck & after ??

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад

      +1973Robski Thanks for the tip... I try to push on the outer edge of the gauge. It's a snug fit as you can see. I have a skinnier seal, but if I use that one, the knurled screw does not help and with the thicker seal, I don't have to use it.

    If my windshields are fogging up from some steam from the vents, engine temp light going off, and heat not working, would changing the thermostat help?

    • @EXOVCDS

      No heat inside the car & Temperature light blinking = bad water pump.
      Steam inside the car = bad heater core (probably due to engine overheating).
      Replace timing belt & water pump to fix overheating.
      Remove dash & replace the heater core to fix the steam inside the car.

    Mind if I ask a question? I am thinking of selling my Honda since its going up in price in my area (from 1500 to 2600) and I might get an Audio A4 from the 90's. Any tips or things to look out for? If not I will be getting a Nissan 240sx

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад +1

      +Sean “S3EN” Slater Audi A4 is like the Passat B5... look for prior water damage inside the car. The age (as with any car) will take its toll on components. If you find a mint car, you will pay top dollar, but it's worth it in the long run. Having said that, you can find them cheap (even good ones)... just be prepared to put money into it (again, as with any car that gets old). Common things: turbo, oil leaks (valve cover gasket), auto tranny (stay away), suspension components, quattro system can get expensive). Audi forums would have more / better info. I only see what comes into the shop and that's not much since it's just preventative maintenance most of the time.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 года назад +1

      @@jquiznos2283 P2181 will usually set when coolant temperature drops below 81c... after having reached full operating temperature of 90c. A good thermostat will keep temperature above 87c. If you have a scan tool that can view live engine data... idle the engine until temperature is 90c (194f), then take the car on a steady cruising speed of 30 to 50 mph. If temperature drops below 81c (177f), the thermostat is bad / opening too soon / staying open too long.

      @jquiznos2283 4 года назад

      @@EXOVCDSI was supposed to borrow a buddy's tool that shows live data but he forgot it and I was in a hurry, so today I R+R the thermostat and the coolant temp sensor (like on your part1 vid) and topped off the coolant since I lost about a gallon during the job. Cleared the code, drove it only about 10 miles but I'm gonna try to put another 50 tomorrow. I'm hoping there isn't anything more. I'm getting close to my smog-by date. but i notices this about the cat the tempertures thanks. And can I drive with the car? for smal time? cause the car does not overheat or somthing. the fan goes on when I sit stationary and tempertures go to normal. only if i go speedway the car goes cold temperture
      mabye i keep the car or traid it in for a renault clio 1.2 or a megane 2 from 2004 2.0 hmm cause its about 200 euro if i do it myself

    I have 99 2.0 beetle that will overheat. The lower hose never gets hot. New radiator, thermostat and water pump. What am I missing to keep this from overheating? I even used a bleeder to bleed the pull the air from the reservoir return line and it still happens. Heater produces plenty of heat and all the hoses get hot except the bottom hose.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 лет назад

      If the lower hose never gets warm, then the new thermostat is bad or you still have air in the system.
      If you activate the radiator fans via AC switch or the radiator thermal switch... do the fans run?
      Watch this: ruclips.net/video/Roh6RCs8IJk/видео.html

    • @keithmcquown8695
      @keithmcquown8695 7 лет назад

      I do show some flow in the return hose but not as heavy a stream as you show in your videos. The fans do come on when the AC is on. Without a vacuum system how can I insure that I get all the air out of the system?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 лет назад

      Keith McQuown The system is pretty much self bleeding provided that the bleed / return hoses are clear and that there is enough initial coolant in the system.
      If the rerun hose is pumping water and you have heat inside the car, then the water pump is pumping and you probably don't have an air pocket. Thermostats can be bad out of the box.

    • @keithmcquown8695
      @keithmcquown8695 7 лет назад

      as they start to use heat detecting cameras for electric resistence faults on hybrid vehice battery for example also now the pros like G-truglia and ther like.
      The eev blog dave johns demonstrates his pro flir one on electronic hot spots.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 лет назад

      +Intrade Motor You can't compare a $200 plug-in device to a Standalone Flir (or similar) Thermal Camera. This is meant as a cheap add-on to a cellphone, to be used for a variety of things. I have used it to check heated seat function (spots operation quicker than my butt can), cooling systems, electrical (hot spots), climate control, exhaust. I will buy a standalone thermal camera in the future... no money for an expensive one at this time.

      i think you just did misundrstand my question, i did not try to ask you to buy a better flir because yours is crap thats not my question.
      Let me Re ask my question again
      How accurate does it mesure hotspots over a laser point infrared digital thermometer? i can not tell as on your video the heat immage looks quite blurred and streched. "compaired to the flir pro"
      i know we cant afford a flir pro tool we need to find money for the 300$ flashlight first so we can see what we do first and other more inportant tools . Maybe you can do a video review about it and point out what you like over a normal infrared-gun, like my one i recon is quite good from conrad electronics for like 20 euro.
      That is the direction my question was pointing.
