About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

Edit** there’s large backing plates mounted under the hull! We just didn’t film under there!
What an adventure it’s been to get our sailing boat off-grid ready, and the journeys only just beginning as next week we will be adding the solar. Game changer. Could you live off-grid?
You need to put backing plates on and just bolt to the fiberglass. I hate to see it pull out while under stress. Every piece of hardware on my sailboat has backing plates for safety. Did a great job.
Yes...😊
Having read through all of the comments to date, I see that the consensus from the peanut gallery is that you definitely will need backing plates under deck to bolster the strength of the solar arch. Broad, thick, metal backing plates to distribute the shock in sporty conditions at sea. Why, you say? Because the torque will be tremendous at the top of the arch when it is put under any accidental load and exercises its leverage. Good job, otherwise, and good luck.
i cant imagine not hanging off of that
Oh good: I was going to say ~
Becca. Your opening narrative on this episode as on many is very well done. I hope someday to read your book on your life living as a cruiser and lessening your global footprint. Changing our relationship with consumption is a subject the world can of course benefit from being exposed to and you have the opportunity to demonstrate and teach it and I’m so grateful you do. You are such an endearing person and that gives you the advantage of catching peoples attention. I watch you and a couple of longer term sailing channels, I think both of you two bring a balance of intelligence, integrity, humanity and humility. Much appreciation.
Could not agree more , what an enriching yet sobering experience to hear your opening monologue… I especially loved the “adapting to rather than controlling” line which reminds us of the humility we should all feel under the scrutiny of creation…
The sum is worth more than the parts. You two complement each other so well. Don't ever take that for granted. ~ Be well
Your motivation and ingenuity are to be applauded. As an 81-year-old man watching your efforts I get tired. Enjoy your youth while you have it.
This episode was a masterpiece. So glad you have added the note re backing plates. Always astounds me that these rigs have a small connection with the boat but hold massive loads. Can’t wait to see finished results. Dont forget to show us the finished kitchen
Congrats. What a great achievement. Now you should be really able to travel off grid. Enjoy yourselves and we will follow on our couches. Until next week have fun you 2.
You're a real poet, Becca. That was beautiful.
Such an eloquent opening to this episode. So exciting to watch you both (and Teulu!) become more & more capable of handling any challenge thrown your way. Can't wait to see all of these projects come together to enhance your future adventures. Until next week!
Cool arch. I wondered a little if you should have put backing plates under the deck.
I just love the determination and enthusiasm from the both of you. It’s an absolute joy seeing you tackle jobs, most of us wouldn’t go near. Teulu is getting the love and attention she deserves. By looking after her, she’ll look after you both. Another great post from you two 👍
I've been following your channel for a while, keep it up!
Well done you two! I have been following along since the beginning your skill set has broadened dramatically ! It’s wonderful for this old retired engineer and sailor to see you both gaining confidence and ability! Your adventures are building a lot of life skills as well as memories!
Hi guys. Your a great advertisement for working together and not stressing . We'll done on the instal.
Becca .. the narrative qt the beginning was superb,,, you both are such a delight to watch every week,,, ❤
Great job guys! If I may offer some advice - I'd put some backing plates on the underside of the deck and also put some insulating / isolating compound between the aluminium arch and the (presumably) stainless bolts - galvanic corrosion will be nasty and quick - I think Duralac is a good galvanic isolator if you can get it. Fair winds :)
Great episode guys.
Great job filming and installing. You should be proud of yourselves!
You're incredible, don't stop creating content!
Damn😮 that was the most profound introductory statement I’ve listened to in a long time. So prophetic ❤
That was an amazing g episode - starting with the beautiful monologue and followed by fine storytelling and music to accompany the many moods of a long project, really, next level stuff. Glad to see so many things coming together for you both and Teulu 🙏
Well done Becca narrative was brilliant and your genuine emotions a breath of fresh air.!
Great words Becca, great wordsmith.
Great job you two.
Brilliant opening monologue with perfectly selected video setup. We are coming with you on your journey over the sea. Love that purple, pink, orange & yellow sky & sea scene. Wow! That blew me away how beautiful that was. Makes all those tribulations worth while doesn't it? ❤😊
It start with poetry in motionand becomes a amazing achievement in your lives being able too travel the world autonomously !!!..❤💯
3 and half days, no rain. Well done looks good :)
Love you kids! It's wonderful to see how committed you are to cheering each other on when doing hard things. Keep up the good work! Be well. ❤
Giving you another check mark for work well done. Hope your knee has continued to heal Becka. You are probably at the boat show, so have fun. Love ya. Stay safe. ❤🙏
Arch looks really good you two. Keep up the good work will see you next week.
Marvelous, simply perfect.
Another brilliant episode guys and great team work.👍⛵️
so many compliments about the flowery words of inspiration... but hardly any about the engineering prowess and the adjusting on the fly when installing the solar tower. Real education on offer.
That was impressive! On your way to being totally off grid all the time😮
off grid and still making RUclips videos, right....
Very lovely, it doesn’t really matter how long it takes, doing a good job matters. 👍
Solar panels are a great technical solution to the electricity needs of sailing boats. A very good example of matching the right technology to the right application.
And yet another project/improvement getting done👍…Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
Great job guys. I too looked at the tower in a box but I was put off because it was aluminium and my stainless steel guard rail wouldn’t have got on well together. Dyneema sounds very sensible. Also, I replaced my cockpit sole with new teak, cost me €3,000 so I think you’ve saved a fortune there with the bit you sourced. Keep up the good work 👍
Bloody massive! 😃 I've been waiting for this episode.
Working hard! I'm sure there is a lot of satisfaction at the end of a project!
Love your narration at the beginning ❤
Great episode!
Looks amazing, really well done so pleased for you both 🙂
You guys. Are so connected Awsome .👌👌👌
Becca, why PE teacher would have you chewing the soap at 18:40 but I am inclined to forgive such transgressions 😂
Awesome job you two 😊
Nice! Use the cut off tubes as fishing rod holders
Nice episode. From the writing in the introduction to the deft story telling. Well done.
Thanks! for staying purpose driven!
Great episode, you guys got skills ❤
Job well done guys
hi teulu.. I love your nice channel. How ever, I am not a big fan of these big add ons on a sailboat, though well aware of the need for power.. There's no footage from under deck, but I think you should mount some big back plates under deck for these huge arcs.. There will be some big forces on the deck.. happy days from Denmark, kind regards Poul
Looks amazing. Well done both
Great job. And poetic opening too.
So much work and not so easy. You do take on some huge projects. An interesting video. Well done. I hope you get the sun and it is all worth the planning and execution.
I just installed an energy monitoring system in my smart home. It didn't teach me anything radically new yet, but I suspect merely seeing the usage visualized as gauges is already changing my behavioral patterns. We'll see what the future holds.
Looks Fantastic !!!
The ability to correctly estimate a complicated task s directly related to the amount of experience you have with the task. Also the difficulty is increased if you are in challenging circumstances ( floating by a dock in hot rainy weather) and if you are limited in the amount of proper tools and materials. Filming is a bit of an obstacle also I imagine. Good work!
It's always so impressive to see how far you've come. Beautiful monologue in the beginning!
Did you treat the teak spacers with anything?
Was thinking you could make a few cute teak coasters with the wood too.
I’m having trouble with solar arch design because my Beneteau is a bit old.. I’m contacting Atlantic in the USA thanks to you guys. I’m based 1/2 mile from Mayflower Marina, I think you know it 😊
Re: Estimates
Keep a record of estimate vs actual, plus a note re: why you estimated high or low. I think that after a while you will be much better at it. One more trick is to break down your estimate into the task level. Each task is given a time. All the times are added up and the total time is multiplied by 1.5. The extra 50% is for contingency.
My goodness, you two are doing so well and learning so much. There is so much more to adventure sailing than the sailing part. I think that your knowledge and experience could one day be turned into valuable information for beginners.
Just a suggestion. I'm not sure what core your deck has and I noticed you do not have backing plates underneath the deck to carry the load trying to pull through the deck. It didn't look like those bolts came with wide area washers either. Given that you are going to carry the weight of your dinghy on the arch you should at least consider some wide area washers underneath the deck. Keep in mind that in rough seas with the boat pitching, the weight of the dinghy could be as much as double its static weight. It would be a nightmare to lose it at sea.
When doing boat projects the advice from an old shipwright mate was work out the time you think it will take then Multiply by 7, I have found this to be an accurate guess better than what i used to do
22:44 we are happy with the position. Me Too!😂
That look so good :)
In Mexico City, people make social arrangements for "after the rain".
Despicament. I'm borrowing that.
Good job!👌
Just seen your edit was worried bit of a small footprint for the base. Also you could add a piece on each side to the railings dingy motor windy day will spread the load. Nice to see things moving along. Hope the knee is getting better.
some nice wide backing plates would make me feel better. keep a real close eye on those bolts it would be awful if something happened 4-5-days from land, but that thing is sexy
Better to just get a larger alternator. Zach you are going to be a master fabricator in time.😆
We don’t like to motor if we can help it
@@TeuluTribe I understand, but it is cheaper in the long run I think. Depends on the price of the panels I guess. Hope your knee feels better.
Poetic ❤
The newer yellow brushless angle grinder from Ryobie is at least 3-4x better than that early blue model. Also, have special wheels for aluminum. And keep them separate from normal wood and steel wheels. The new brushless models are a huge upgrade and seem to actually get more out of the batteries. By far the best bang-for-the-buck cordless tools.
Love Billabong T
I feel your pain with trying to get everything lined up and not fouling other equipment. There is so much trial and error and time consumption. The weather typically never cooperates.
I put a bimini on my boat, and it has taken months of tweaking to get it to the point where I am happy. There is so much tension that the quick release pins in the feet really are not quick release.
One question though, is the arch going to be strong enough to hold the dinghy, especially if it get lots of water from heavy rain?
Great work and great episode.
Hey, enjoying quietly but really enjoying the journey of the both of you! One question: why are two solar panels from 400wp not enough? Is it the video editing? Can not believe running the fridge and cooker would consume that much power. I always tend to try to keep everything in a cost/profit/alternative comparison and mostly just accept the discomfort after that and spent in on… well other sailing jewels😉 thanks again for sharing all of this beautiful content!
Very good video
Dear Teulu‘s. I like your Chanel very much, you both are so real and natural. I have one big wish. Please invest in a wide angle objective. You look so weird when you talk to us in this forward leaning position so you fit in the format of your camera. Thank you and good luck to all of your upcoming adventures. Lovely greetings from Austria, Gerhard.
Hi both ,when cutting the tubing it was mentioned that you were doing lots of little measured dots snd joining up if i picked you up right .
Incase you not know if you measure amount you want to remove and mark, then take a square edged sheet of paper and wrap it round anything cylindrical so that the egdes line up you can mark round that .This gives you a perfectly square cut line .
Hope might be of help in the future .
Fair winds and sunny days 😎⛵
Hi Guys, fantastic work on the arch, however, I think you should have kept or replaced your dingy rope with WHITE rope. Any black rope absorbs heat terribly and even if it is "UV" protected it will degrade MUCH faster than standard WHITE ropes.
Hope you keep a close eye on it for degradation.
Love the channel immensely.
Regards from South Africa
didn't see any backing plates ?
did you use backing plates on the arch mounts? I would consider that
What about having the bolts going through plates on the underside of the deck? (for added strength)
Great video. Fantastic choose of music in this one, any chance of a list of the music used, please?
What about having the bolts going through plates on the underside of the deck (for added strength)
How is your knee doing? you seem to be gettnig around good, but I know knees take awhile to heal.
Great job in adding an arch carrier. Nice to see you. Please out of only curiosity how much do you have to pay for being parked where you are please. Say each week. Curiosity against RV parking in Motorhome site of £45. Per night in UK.
Wish You Well.
Hi how are you doing today
I didn't see any backing plates under the leg attachments points?
Yep, backing plates on all four feet 😊
I'd also advocate for TefGel or similar between the alloy and SS - and also hope you managed to stretch for BiFacial panels, they're such a small premium over single faced nowadays
Great episode. What was the company that made the arch?
Two days is about right for a job that size. There is no need for all that sika. Just a bit in the holes and on the bolt is plenty.
No backing plates under the deck ? obviously you have thought about that, is that a later job fellas ?
No way, chicks do 2 decimals on any measurement. Blown away!
How often do you drop tools into the water?
Hi guys I'm a long-time viewer, and think you're both great, but I'm very concerned. I can see the comments about back plates, but I'm not totally convinced that that will be enough, especially as you're going to have solar panels and the Dingy hanging from that arch. When the wind blows and catches those items the arch is going to act as a leaver at the very least in strong winds it could affect the steering of the boat, unlike a sail you can't reduce or remove. I don't believe your boat is big enough for and arch of that size, which hangs beyond the back of the boat. Also the deck is not the strongest part of the structure, your Dingy was supported on those huge brackets on the back of the boat and I wouldn't mind betting that rear panel is one of the strongest areas of the boat unlike the deck.
Hi, the backing plates are large and these arches are true and tested. We also got the MK2 which is substantially stronger and we will only be adding half the weight we could do it so it will be fine but thanks for the concern
That's a huge arch, can I ask what it cost?
How's your knee Becka?
My estimate 4 weeks, my other half’s estimate 5 mins, as always
When you dock at a marina, do you get water, electric
Most marinas have water & electricity, all of them in the first world. However as you travel to more remote locations, what qualifies as a marina might be a bit of a stretch and so is the water & power.
We didn’t get to see your backing plates.
❤❤🥰🥰
