WipEout - Evolution of "Contender Eliminated"

This short video covers every version of the infamous quote "Contender Eliminated" from each game in the WipEout series.
Note: I have not included the original versions of WipEout HD Fury and WipEout 2048 in this video, since WipEout Omega Collection uses the same voice lines.
All games shown in this video were played on real hardware, not emulated.

"Contender eliminated" is perhaps the most soothing thing to ever hear, except if it's happening to you. Pure has the best voiceover for it though.
For the Fusion part you could've done it in Temtesh Bay Course 2 with the super missiles.

Now i kinda wish BallisticNG had a cool elimination scene. Right now, eliminated ships just kinda fall to the ground and slide a bit, they dont even get thrown away from the force of the weapon like in WipEout HD. It would be nice if the eliminated ships violently imploded like in Pulse and Pure.

I so hope it gets added. Vonsnake could very well be looking into it. Although I might be biased I like the "Contender Eliminated" from Ballistic the best.

I love the very „British“ voice of the actual Wipeout Omega Collection the most! Only on WipEout HD though. Wish i could switch the voice and for example other things like exhaust colors! I love the blue beam but my my favorite ships are Red colored exhaust. 😢

2097 - Robotic and straight forward
64 - Customer Service voice. A little too upbeat (and quiet) about an elimination
3 - Overwatch voice from Half--Life 2 basically.
Fusion - The delay makes it sound like they were confirming the elimination first. The male voice is kind of Mad Max-y
Pure - A clearer sounding Combine Overwatch-ish voice. Very "British Authoritarian"
Pulse - The modulated voice sounds even MORE authoritarian and sinister than Pure and Fusion. It's as if Margaret Thatcher herself was hissing into your ear
HD Fury - Straight forward again. Sounds like a proper human announcer.
2048 - Like HD Fury, but slightly more sinister sounding with the voice's tone. Not as sinister as Fusion's male voice

why did this go from "contenders being eliminated from the player's pov" to "player being eliminated", just confused?

That's because WipEout 2097 and WipEout Fusion are a bit different.. in those games it only says "Contender Eliminated" when an opponent is eliminated. For WipEout 3, and all the other game in the series, it will say "Contender Eliminated" for any ship that is eliminated, including the player. Hope this helps

Also, Fusion has a more excited sounding "PLAYER ELIMINATED!" sound when a player is destroyed.

I think it's safe to say the N64 version sounds the worst lol (in every way). Btw check out Wipeout Phantom Edition. The source code for the original PSX game was leaked, so someone released an improved PC version. You can enable 2097/BallisticNG style collisions, which fixes the one issue i had with the original game. It's now perfection and will run at very high frame rates (120+), which Wipeout MASSIVELY benefits from.

Yeah, the N64 version doesn't sound very cool, unlike the other games in the series. Also, I will certainly check out WipEout Phantom Edition at some point soon, that sounds interesting..
