MTA Maryland (Baltimore, MD): 2019 NovaBus LFS

  • For the first time in 15 years, MDOT/MTA will be ordering buses from a manufacturer not named New Flyer - with the exception of MCI motor coaches (2011) & Optima Opus (2006).
In 2018, NOVA was awarded a contract poised to have a total of 350 buses built over a five-year period (70 units per year) beginning in 2020. In the meantime, two coaches were built as introduction demos for MTA to inspect & spec-out the two units to their liking before mass production is underway. The 40-foot standard "LFS" and 60-foot "LFS-Articulated" (both with the LFX's BRT-style streamline roof facade design). For the incoming first order in 2020, 'thirty' (30 units) LFSes & 'forty' (40 units) LFS-As will be delivered to retire the remaining D40LFs & DE60LFRs. Every other year (2021-2024) afterwards will see 40-foot units (280 total during the process) only.
Currently, LFS #20001 and LFS-A #20031 are technically 2020-made coaches but built in 2019 for introductory purposes as seen here. Keep in mind, NOVA is in-conjuction with Prevost (motor coach manufacturer); whereas, both are under the parental ownership(?) of the Swedish "VolvoGroup".
There are many, many significant changes for MTA; all of us in Maryland, to get use to that stands apart from New Flyer in so many ways but I think we all have a feeling that these buses; properly spec-ed & all, are what we wanted all along. How they'll handle themselves over the course of 12-15 years is up to Prevost & MDOT/MTA to make that distinction.
There is so much to go through about the NOVAs that explaining it in the description of this video is useless, so seeing is believing.

Nice!!! , once we get our budgetary issues taken care of, hopefully MCTS here in Milwaukee orders these once we get our second batch of Gillig BRT'S next spring and our battery electric buses at the end of next year, or by early 2021 so we can have some fleet diversity again. Good job with the footage man 😎👍

I do agree. New Flyer for the most has gain a monopoly in the bus manufacturing world but a company Gillig is better off the way it is. Maybe come up with a new design but don't leave the comfort zone. The lack diversity though sorta create "mirage" issues - if you catch my drift - when there's really only two BIG NAME bus makers leading the charge.

Septa in Philly have 40 and 60 ft Nova buses, there ok i rather have the New Flyer 60 ft.
Also the front seat behind the driver could be dangerous because if he hit the brakes your gonna bang your head against the front wall thats why Septa turned it to a one seat facing the isle.

Nah! Looks like a barge with wheels. And, what is that in the back on top? A cooling tower? Better go back to the design table on that! Cheap, thin seats, toggle switches (really?!) instead of nicer rocker switches. Nova bus has NEVER built anything original. Their first bus, the Classic, was a GM New Look with a different front end. For years, they maintained those slanted 1960's side windows. Then, they produced the RTS II. An outdated jalopy that GM and TMC gave up. Now, they are copying Volvo technology while importing most parts from Canada. Give me a Gillig BRT or New Flyer Excelsior anyday. Both 100 percent manufactured in the U. S.

    • @MJofLakelandX
      @MJofLakelandX  4 года назад +3

      I mean...
*The back-end is a cooling ventilation for the engine bay
*Toggle switches are virtually the same as "rocket" switches
*Cheap thin seats are a design chosen by MTA to prevent the infestation of bugs & diseases due to the cushion seats sticking to fabric clothing; this makes it easier to clean whilst using disinfectants
*GMDD ousted their bus production line and sold the rights to TMC, then onward to Nova to continue producing the same model to maintain stored parts (...this will become a trend)
*Slanted sliding windows for the driver are nearly identical to what you'll find on an XCELSIOR
*RTS series was the best selling and most produced model of transit coaches in North America when Nova took over the model in 1995 and continued stacking profit with the sale of spare parts & newer buyers purchasing it until production was ceased in 2004
*Equally to most U.S. manufacturers, Nova has kept the same design to decrease the costs on building a new production line and to maintain replacement parts for transit agencies at a "cheaper" rate for the older equipment to continue running (...but I do understand the need for a new design)
*Gillig has kept the same design since 1996 with the ONE option of a face-lift (...I do like Gillig tho, so no harm there), similar to what New Flyer did for 30 years upon the production of the Xcelsior in 2011 (ex.: D900, D40HF, D40LF, D40LFR)
*Nova IS owned by Volvo Group, so YES, they will use the same tech as any Prevost or Volvo-made bus in Europe
*Nova buses are assembled in Great Plains, NEW YORK -- it's in the same circumstance as New Flyer having plants in Ontario and St. Cloud, Minnesota... again it's 100% produced in the U.S.
...But, I do appreciate the comment as always. Thanks for watching as well.
