That opening scene… yeah. Caught me off guard.
Hahahaha, right?? Me too!!
Lee as a child or per partner as an adult? Not enought action or interaction with Longlegs -it did not meet the freaky Cage quota... hahaha...
How many "Butt Puckers" would you give this movie? I'd give it 4 out of 5 as a whole. But that intro scene was definitely a 5 on the BP scale.
Thank you Chris for being vague and not revealing any plot details! I’ve had to turn off so many reviews that immediately told me something I didn’t want to know! Appreciate you letting us know what to expect without spoiling anything. The hype for this one has been huge and I’ve been hearing mixed things. What you describe is exactly what I was hoping for from this one, so I’m hoping I’ll love it!
I hope you enjoy it! We're now trying to coordinate schedules to watch it again!
@@MoviesAndMunchiesUm sir….. where did you get those lime green glasses? I’d like to purchase
@@MrCovert23 Thanks!! I got them online from Zenni Optical. They have a couple of colors in this style, but I really dig the brightness of these!
I've been waiting for this one. There are certain movies that are so dread and anxiety inducing that I secretly yearn for the end credits so that that feeling of angst will finally subside. The last two like that for me were Hereditary and When Evil Lurks. I was genuinely uneasy the entire runtime because you truly don't know what's coming next. I feel like this will provide the same end-result. And now that the reviews are coming back in stellar it only heightens my expectations. I'm slated for a 2pm showing tomorrow. Thanks for the great review again Chris. Will report back, cheers mate.
Looking forward to this. I was expecting (per the marketing campaign) one of the most horrific movies of the decade but I don't think this is that. Still glad I don't know quite what to expect.
Yeah, I read that too and while it is incredibly tense and unnerving, I wouldn't classify it as horrific... this is way more of a disturbing thrill ride. I hope you enjoy it!
Wanted to love it more. The excellent marketing campaign promises a different movie in a way. And that final act was too silly.
7, Silence of the lambs, and The Shining.
I thought it was more Clarice (CBS series that was set to be like a prequel because CBS didn't have the character rights to Hannibal ) with a little bit of Hereditary. Longlegs character was too much. Speaks to how good acting has no substitute. Mark Rylance playing Sully in Bones and All. Such a creepy and much scarier character than Longlegs without being extra. 😅
Exorcist 3 too
You are a fantastic reviewer. You have a great way of talking and keeping the viewer interested. Bravo
I was quite disappointed sadly, I’d been so looking forward to it. All the creepy parts had been shown in the trailers, it was good but not excellent. I wonder if I hadn’t bought into all the hype I would have enjoyed it more 😢
Agreed. The marketing was better than the movie. But the movie still got under my skin. So it was worth it.
I feel the same 😭 I didn’t even watch the full trailer, just teaser trailers, but the amount of discussion over the viral marketing got me way too hyped.
This movie was impressive. The atmosphere, tone, visual style, all amazing. Thought the plot was contrived, and it kinda threw me with the dive into the supernatural, but all in all I loved it :)
I mean... the supernatural aspect wasn't a secret or a spoiler.
@@77Creation it was a tiny bit out of place- nothing in the trailers actually suggested there would be supernatural powers; could've just been a grounded realistic serial killer mystery like seven or silence of the lambs. Just cuz a movie deals w/ the occult doesn't mean it has to have supernatural elements, hth
My only complaint is I wish it was longer. Definitely needed more Nic Cage.
Genuinely, this was the review I was most excited for :)
The way you describe Monroe's FBI agent really reminds me of the character Holly Gibney in the Stephen King books. Just thought that was interesting. Anyway, really like how the trailer didn't show the whole movie like we usually see.
I absolutely LOVE Holly Gibney! She was my favorite character out of the trilogy and even within The Outsider. I've got 'Holly' now and can't wait to start reading it.
It was very good but unfortunately did over explain at the end. If you’re gonna over explain the mother’s connection you need to explain why he ended up living in the mother’s house and also, some backstory to Cobble? Like, maybe how he became what he is? Was he part of a cult? The ciphers are kind of blown over, it would’ve been neat to see some connection to perhaps ancient Sumerian texts or something, some deeper drive to Cobble’s mission than simply ‘Hail Satan.’ I would find it interesting if perhaps Cobble as a boy had an encounter with someone doing what he now does & it gets passed on like a demonic virus/contract required to not be killed by the predator. I dunno, a lot explained yet not explained leaving an unfinished feeling. Perhaps a prequel for Cobble? Interesting name too. Cobblepot/The Penguin. Cage’s character had Joker & Penguin all over it. I was waiting for Batman to show up during the interrogation. Didn’t understand the clothes at all. Weird pinkish white, multiple button up shirts, the powdered face. Came off less Marc Bolan glam & more Liberace. He had guitars (a Flying V), awesome. But why? Was in he in a band at some point? Did Satan promise him fame & fortune for doing his ‘dirty work’? What was the metal ball? What material? How does it channel the voice of the devil? So much left to imagine which is annoying as what’s left to imagine about Cobble is juxtaposed against what is explained which is that the mother is arguably more of a player here in the murders. She actually enters the home. She is an accomplice!! In classic Manson fashion, Cobble never actually kills anyone. Anyway, so many holes, so many questions, so many missed opportunities. This film needed another hour to artfully fill in some blanks and it would’ve been a masterpiece. I give it a solid B+ or three stars. Also, not really scary but definitely ambient, eerie & at times, although brief, creepy.
Thank you for sharing 👍👍👍👍
My favorite thriller is, of course Seven and High Tension. Still shocked to this day. I think i saw it three or four years ago 😲😲😲😲
Those are both spectacular!!
@@MoviesAndMunchies Thank you 👍👍👍👍
So nice to see reviews that see and say the same things I thought about the movie, definitely one I had to see more than once but it was honestly clearer and better the second time through. I loved every minute of it. Thanks for a great review!
I LOVED this movie. It felt like a combination of Prisoners, Se7en and Silence of the Lambs. I also have autism and I felt that from Maika’s performance too.
As am autistic person, while I've just now learned such, now I'm more intrigued cause I've been interested in this since the trailer. 😮
Everyone has autism these days and think it some kind of super power 😂
And everyone is saying it’s like Seven and Silence of the Lambs, you’re all just repeating each other.
@@BeardedBushMan81 apologies for being medically diagnosed and getting certain vibes from a movie.
@@emilyjodway463 thank you for apologizing! 😂
For me it's a smashed up version of Carrie, (because of Lee's supernatural ability and her crazy mother), X-Files, (The dreary look and the feel of the Pacific Northwest in the '90s, and the FBI with Lee as Scully and Carter as Mulder.) and Silence of the Lambs. ( Buffalo Bill)
I liked this film more than Alien Romulus. The only thing that threw me off was Nic Cage (of course 😅). Sometimes he’s horrifying and other times he’s cringe hilarious. Really liked this film
Glad to hear this was worth the watch. My thriller recommendation would be the Korean movie "The Chaser". Crazy intense...
I've not heard of that, thanks for the recommendation!!
Good movie. Korean cinema is fire
Just came to say I love your channel and can’t wait to see it grow
S P O I L E R S : I would not say that this film ends anywhere close to an optimistic possibility. Because she ran out of bullets, I'm pretty sure the doll eventually possessed her and forced her to kill the child. That's why she said at the end. "You are such an asshole" (or something to that effect)
But another take is that because the doll is still intact, Ruby won't have the memory of the tragedy at her home.
Does she run out of ammo or does the devil prevent the gun from firing?
@@nilesengerman8263 I think it was a revolver, so probably ran out of bullets
Or is she still under the spell of the doll and thinks she's pulling the trigger.
I really liked the movie but the advertisement is misleading it's not "the scariest horror movie since the silence of the lambs". It's a slow burn psychological thriller, but not really scary but creepy.
I absolutely loved this movie , since seeing it the other day i havent stopped thinking about it, it had me intrigued right from the first scene " HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE ALMOST BIRTHDAY DAY" gave me chills
You’re truly a master at this!! Thank you for your reviews!
It’s weird that you mentioned Se7en because I just came across a couple of videos of Kevin Spacey talking about the last scene and the man is way too humble with himself in that last scene!! All he talked about was how amazing Brad Pitt was! I wanted to yell at him and be like “YOU WERE GREAT TOO!!!” But nope all he said was how he was so amazed by Brad Pitt and how he had to go to some dark places to make that scene and it just made me be like wow here’s a man who played such an iconic role-everyone remembers him and he wasn’t even in the movie til the middle/end! But all he talked about was how great Brad was…it was pretty cool to see
The exposition dump killed it for me, I would rather seen it more fleshed out
This movie is ok at best. There have been lower budget movies that are way better. This movie is over hyped. But to each his own its ok at best.
No one is mentioning Cure from Kiyoshi Kurisawa as a similar movie to Longlegs when I think the similarities are striking to a point but I think Cure’s execution is masterful
I've not seen Cure, but I'm now going to look for it!
@@MoviesAndMunchiesif you’re a physical media guy, it’s in the Criterion Collection
@@kamccomb16 Even better!!
SO excited for this movie :’) I was really eager to see your review too!
Will you be reviewing Sing Sing by chance? That was a 5 star watch for me, curious to see your thoughts!
I didn't think of Seven at all while watching this movie. On the other hand I thought of Silences of the Lamb many many times. It even felt that many scenes were exactly like some done in SOTL but just done differently. There was even a house that looked exactly like Buffalo Bill's house.
It’s landing is mid at best😔
Seven and Silence of the Lambs are 10/10 movies. I was disappointed with this one.
Chris. Great to see all your reviews. I notice you did a bit of theater reviews. Do you think the 'death of cinema' is a thing? Or his this more click bait?
Thanks for being the best critic on RUclips.
I'm not sure the death is an imminent thing, but the movie going experience isn't what it used to be. Last night, the dude next to me waited until the movie started to rummage through his bag of chips or whatever, creating an immense amount of noise... and people behind us were chatting on and off again through the film. I think if anything is going to kill theaters, it will be the establishments not enforcing rules and decorum... we all pay a bunch to sit in the theater with snacks... if I wanted to have distractions, I could sit at home with the windows open and the dog barking at random things LOL!
@@MoviesAndMunchiesagreed!
I really wanted to love this movie. The trailer made me so hyped to go and watch it and everyone on social media said how scary it was, how this is up there with the silence of the lambs, so on and so forth...even my theater was packed! I just wasnt feeling it. 6/10
Performances were great. The story was contrived and disjointed. It became predictible halfway through, making me hope it would get going.
I cant say that it is even the same genre of Silence or Seven. It really missed a lot of the marks that make a good psychological thriller. This is more like a M Night mystery movie that leaves you going "what, how, and really!!" The mom was great, she was such a DOLL, lol 😂😂
I heard cage is a vampire in this
Negative, but he IS awesome.
Cool
The movie fu*king blew!!!!!!!!
Good review 👍
5 out of 5 couches. Didn’t disappoint
Anticipated this film alot. And i did enjoy it. But the first half had me at a 8/10 score but id give it a 6.5/ 10 score overall. The film wasnt what i hoped for. But thats fine. The ending also wasnt that good imo. But overall i enjoyed it.
You're cool
Its trivial but when she said she doesnt drink but she smokes cigs i was like cmon...bs lol
It's the 90s lol

goodbye!
This could have been absolutely incredible.... But instead it is not a serial killer film it's not grounded in reality long legs does nothing... And they turned it into every other posetion horror film out there what a major disappointment
SPOILER
i love how they do the exposition scene tbh, they just made the reveal way creepier
I like trillers. Not so much scary movies. Soooo should I???
It's not too scary, just unnerving!
It's a thriller but definitely has horror elements.
Kind of disturbing in a scary fun to watch way.....
Okay. Literally EVERY review of this movie starts with: "In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of clue that she must solve..." Guys, just use your own words and be more creative (saying this in general, to every review channel). Like, I'm looking for new reviews but it feels like I'm watching the same review for 20th time... It's getting super repetitive.
Looks like an A24 movie so I just know this is not my thing.
This film was severely overrated, I never found it thrilling or gory, and I found Nicholas Cage way out of his league with the character he was portraying, and the final act completely made me hate it.
I guess some people like different things, but this was a flop for me.
Was better with more cage!
So, she is autistic? Or she is just depressed or lonely?
Either way, I am disappointed in this movie. A good mystery or thriller like Silence of the Lamb or Usual Suspects have different stories happening at the same time to keep the action and mystery going.
In this story, nothing really happens except bread crumbs being thrown every 5 or 10 minutes that build into the exposition dump near the end of the movie.
The journey was okay, but the payoff was not enough for the journey.
Neither, she's been under the control of the doll. The one her mother shoots with the shotgun towards the end and the black smoke comes out.
I was so disappointed in this movie. It violated so many “film school 101” rules It was shot well, I feel like everything shot was well thought out. Then they just added a bunch of unneeded jump scares. The narration, exposition, plot conveniences. Just didn’t love it. 6/10 from me.
I’m glad someone else felt the same way. It did have a lot of weird flaws like you explained. The plot conveniences were the worst. Like somehow this new girl is just solving everything on her own. Even though the detectives have been trying for 30 years. Yeah right.
There was no "bunch" of out of place of jump scares. And it was a horror thriller so the ones it had were warranted. And it wasn't just shot well. The acting was great as was the direction. The concept was creepy as well.
But I'd have to agree, the writing was mid, at best. 7/10 for me.
@@523523RTA She's psychic, ffs. Must admit the poorly written script blew past that plot point though.
@523523RTA did you even watch the film lmao 🤣. She was shown to be something of a psychic in the beginning and besides that she was connected to the killings. She was literally afflicted with the same black magic used in the murders lol. Plus long legs left her clues that the others hadn't had.
I completely agree. I gave it a 6/10 as well.
Please do Vikings valhalla review
For me, this movies is the biggest scam of this year. One of the stupidest finales, this is nor Se7en, not Silence of the Lambs. There was no investigations at all. In trailers and the marketing, they made us think that the letters supposed to mean something big. But Lee figured them out instantly. When she draw that triangle, I litearally laughed. We learned nothing about character Longlegs... Etc. etc. Good atmosphere, good promise, good (but underused) performances, but terrbile execution. This movie is some kind of a summary version of itself. Good looking shots here and there but it reminds me of fan made videos of several horror movies.
It was one boring movie. To be honest it was shit.
