Absolutely adore the flavour of this set and a lot of what the cards do, but so glad I’ve resisted the temptation of the ring and left the collectors boxes well alone! Thanks as always to you lads and your patrons for the fun openings!
“What did you learn about lotr today ?” “Well I didn’t need to read the books! There’s thick river girls, rings going north, Frodo trains, and sauerkraut man!”
Anyone notice any Eldraine clump zone with the toppers? With all the ring hype, its maybe getting overlooked. I've seen a dozen cases opened and for the most part there seems to be a pattern
Yo that was rough to watch. An entire case with no chase is just not right man. Absolutely wrecked. I’ll stick to opening Double Masters VIP boosters at $150 a pop as my high roller gamble once in a while. This set sucks for chase cards.
I’ve said it all along: Brendan’s a grower; not a shower! He rises up to the challenge when it really matters and he can do that because he saves his money for the occassion
How many of these cards are actually playable? I've been watching tons of videos like these and it's really nice to see cards with these names on them...but what about playability? I get the feeling the prices on most of these cards are going to tank in a few months. As nice as it is to see a Frodo card, it's going to be much less nice to see several dozen Frodo cards sitting next to each other in the bargain bin at your local LGS two or three years from now.
My 2 buddies and I have been very very lucky with these latest sets. Between march of machines and lord of the rings, we bought a total of 7 collector boxes. In those boxes we pulled 3 serial numbered cards. Ragavan and Emry from MOM and a dwarven ring from LoTR. I hope we carry the same luck into the frame breaks of commander masters. Chasing that lotus!
I appreciate this channel so much on days like this. I have watched a lot of LOTR openings from the boys and rarely do they win. This set is beautiful, but the price is way out of whack. One set box is all I want at this point. A chance to look at some of the nice cards.
I don’t know much about MTG, but I love LOTR and I bought a single collector booster from Walmart and pulled a surge foil Balin’s Tomb. I had no idea what it was so I just set it aside next to my DBZ and Pokémon stuff. Came back a day later to look into these cards and was shocked what I pulled. Now I’m learning so much about MTG.
Wow, congrats! Luck was certainly on your side! Welcome to MTG, if you have any questions about the game just pop in to our discord, link in description
Wow not a single surge foil or even a party tree in the whole case, welcome to browntown...one collector box is all I need...see u in the singles market for this and back to '93-'94 gold
Unless your opening for cards to play or just want to straight up gamble it's not worth buying these. They are heavily reliant on sol rings and surge foils. Unless you get any of those you won't make anything just a loss. Surge foils are 1 per master case of 24 boxes (144 packs) serialized rings are probably even less. This set is a victim of hyped-inflation
I’ve pulled a dwarf ring non serialised and morgul knife surge foil out of one box but the knife price dropped sobhard cause of the newer collector box
@@Muchomango1337 I bought a box release week. Highest pull I got was 3 of the nazgul uncommons total maybe $65 $75 worth cards, gave over $200 for that box. That set made me stop buying mtg boxes all together. Imo they have ruined magic with these collector packs locking all the best cards behind way over priced packs sometimes over $100 for one pack that shouldn't have any dam commons at all
I dont know much about magic i bought a booster for my Nephew who is 10yrs old and just started playing it! He pulled a 1/1 “Ring” Card and thinks its worth a lot of money??? Just teying to find somebody that might know? Its a beautiful card. Thanks
For monetary value, buy singles. Opening packs is always a gamble if you’re doing it for pure finance, one that almost always ends in a loss - just like playing a real lottery! You just end up with at least something by opening MTG or any other TCG/sports card pack. I highly recommend you open whatever product most appeals to you, or stick to buying singles
Give me A Delighted Halfling, An Aragorn the Uniter, and an Eowyn or two plus the horns and dawns and stuff and I’m done with this set! Especially after a full hour video of opening it!!!❤ That and Anduril, Forth Eorlingas, Eomer.. personally some awesome new additions (five color/boros/temur here)
So I'm confused here, what is being opened here? On tcgplayer, there is 3 different versions of this set? Art series, commander and universes beyond.... Are all three different sets within the same set? So the one ring is in the non commander/art series booster set, which is this set being opened in the video?
These are the collector boxes of LOTR, all of which are ‘universes beyond’. Art series are simply art-only cards found in set packs. There are 3 types of packs in MTG: draft, set and collector, all belonging to the ‘universes beyond’ aspect of it. When they use other intellectual property, they just label it universes beyond as it’s not original MTG ideas. Commander cards are part of this set, but are only legally playable in the commander format. Commander is the most played format of MTG.
Awesome? That was terrible. Imagine buying 1 box at $450 and getting $110 in return. The art in this set is amazing. The flavour is great and playing as a standalone pretty darn good. The value just isn’t where it needs to be. Depending on what ring you hit it still might be a loss. Better off buying a gift bundle and following up with singles. You can say you had a ticket in the lottery and still got some playable cards.
In my country, the only legal lottery is held by a statutory board. The percentage of the total prize pool is about 65% of the revenue from the lottery tickets - 35% ends up as profit for said board. WotC has once again made history - Holding a lottery where probably 90% of the money flows to them. Well done!
not even close, it costs them money to make these products. Lots of paid labor on many levels. Printers, artists, designers, etc. Then distribution buys from WoTC and they mark it up to the LGS's, then LGS's mark it up to retail and then retail marks it up to other retail... so money is made all the way up the chain. Of a $400 box, I doubt WOTC even makes half after cost in terms of profit. Then they have to pay IP licensing. So yeah, lottery does way better, much cheaper to distribute and manage.
Man the only people who raise the price are the fking buyers. Im collecting mtg but aint no way im paying 500€ for cardboard. I think buyers are too delusional now. 500€...
The 1/1 Ring and the human/drawf/elven rings inflate the price too much. Without those you probably wont get near the price for a box in value of cards
@@MonkeyDyDragonhitting a decent surge can help too. Most of the playable surge foils are $250+ and if you hit one of the big ones they are all crazy money. I’ve been watching a lot of WhatNot streams opening lotr and believe it or not I’ve watched 5 (one serialized Dwarven) rings get pulled and only 2 surge foils. Almost seems like surge foils are less than a 1% pull rate it’s wild.
@@stuckinperth You have a good point there. This set's price is definately being set by collectors, not people actually playing the game. In that regard, MtG is becoming more like Pokemon. TBH, I've been getting more and more into FaB. I've found that community to be very welcoming and the game itself is incredibly fun.
Why does this set have such awful art? I don't care for the race swaps (ok, I admit... Eomer and Eowyn being only step siblings bothers me a little ...) but why does Frodo look like he's 12?! They did the same crap in the movies. He was 50(!) when he left the Shire (he didn't use the Ring up to that point)! That makes his father/son relationship with the young Samwise so weird.
I dont know why anyone has their packs opened for them if it isn't live streamed. Serial card hit? Thats okay, just make a new video and, welp, the patron doesnt get a ring.
This is a valid point depending on the channel. However, we time stamp every lotr video, with those timestamps being visible within patreon to everyone who buys in. We don’t put the time stamp process in the final edit as it’s boring content to most viewers, a technicality. From a financial point of view, it doesn’t make any sense for us to not show any hit except the one of one. We generate ad revenue and more sales as an LGS showing the hits, the bigger the better. Time stamps are mainly for the one of one, and you better believe we would want to show us pulling that on camera!

“What did you learn about lotr today ?”
“Well I didn’t need to read the books! There’s thick river girls, rings going north, Frodo trains, and sauerkraut man!”
And the lesson here: unless you pull a ring, you won't even reach half of your investment value. Just buy your singles, guys.
Agreed. There goes the bank with the boxes.

Brendan must have a sick job or a trust fund to blow almost 3k on 6 collector boxes
Or he’s in debt. Jk

There's a nice smeagol deck that basically infinitely tempts the ring and allows smeagol to steal everyone's lands
My plan is to wait for prices to bottom and then scoop up all the nice holo’s for cheap and keep a collection
19:30 THE ONE RING!
This set is definitely the ring, morgan couldn’t share a single pack
That food token with the webbed up person just creeps me out!
Soo awsome you put prices. I can’t veiw openings without it now.

Don't have to settle for less. Once THE Ring is found, prices will settle to Bro Wars' level, or maybe just a little bit higher.

MTG North needs a serialized sol ring from this set!!
I love you guys. Other channels just do openings and are mundane about it in my opinion. But you; “Sauerkraut Man”.
That’s nuts! Really hope you guys pull a serialized card soon! I enjoy watching you guys!

That's what Tolkien wrote. The card set is based of the books more than the films. Peter Jackson changed it to "shall not" for the film.
