The person who contends that Mr. Christoff's performance is "wrong" owes us an explanation on specific points. His diction is impeccable; he is a supreme musician and master of his art. He enters fully into the spirit of the music. It struck me as a very good eprformance that got better as it went along. The audience is with him from start to finish. What is "wrong" with that????
Great instrument (obviously) but in this particular performance, his Italian vowels are lazy, his legato non-existent, and he sometimes seems to just drop the ends of words when he runs out of time to sing them and needs to skip to the next phrase.
Magnificent, highly individual and wonderfully preserved voice (he is 62 here), perfect technique but this has nothing to do with Rossini's Don Basilio. Christoff is his usual gigantesque bombastic self...

Dico la mia....non e' il massimo quello che ascolto da Boris Christoff in questa "Calunnia"....pero' bisogna dire che la voce non gli mancava per nulla, Rispetto. E' pur sempre un grande della Opera lirica. Quando si criticano questi grandi talenti universalmente riconosciuti (in maniera negativa o peggio quasi dispregiativa) bisogna fare attenzione.....poiche' noi rimaniamo sempre e comunque dall'altra parte..anonimi ascoltatori e molti sono sicuro non sono nemmeno cantanti o se lo sono vorrei sentire come cantano. Meglio di lui non sono.

Cette 'calunnia' est loin d'être son travail le plus appréciable.. cependant: Sans doute vous connaissez tout un tas de basses sexagénaires sans 'trémolo' et sans aucune dégradation. Puis c'est un baryton, puis je ne sais quoi encore. A vous suivre, on se demande par quel moyen il soit parvenu à cette carrière qu'il a eue... Si juste on vous avait eu à l'époque pour bien éclairer le public contre le danger d'avoir devant les yeux un interprète extraordinaire de tant de répertoires divers.
Bon coupons la poire en deux. Disons que j'avais encore en tête une intervention de Roselyne Bachelot, l'ancienne ministre bateleur de foire dire au cours d'une émission qu'elle regrettait les voix de basse d'antan, en citant BC avec lequel "on descendait à la cave" tant sa voix était profonde, ce qui soit dit en passant en dit long sur la vanité, l'inculture et la bêtise de nos dirigeants. Ce chanteur est doué d'une prestance certaine et d'une voix puissante, mais je trouve sa façon de chanter datée et artificielle. Je le trouve bien plus convaincant dans le bas médium/médium.
Peut-être est-il devenu victime de sa propre notoriété. En effet, peu de personnes le décriraient comme un _basso profondo_. Mais c'était un terrible Boris, Philippe II, etc. Et très apprécié par les Russes eux-mêmes, auparavant comme maintenant. Ici, c'est un exercice un peu étrange qu'il accomplit, mais le résultat musical, peut-être intéressant en soi, est tellement contraire avec ce qui se fait comme Don Basilio aujourd'hui, que plein de gens se demandent ce qu'il a voulu faire. Je dois écouter des Don Basilio d'autrefois, peut-être y aurait-il des réponses.

No discuto a Christoff, pero me parece que esta pieza, esta aria en particular la canta mucho mejor Raimondi.
Non mi convince questa interpretazione: lenta, faticosa, priva di brio. Rossini mi piace perché riesce a strapparmi un sorriso. Qui Boris sembra interpretare il Boris Godunov...
enantiodromia sono perfettamente d'accordo, non la sa cantare, e poi...come un colpo di (pausa) ah ah ah e' ridicola!

Cette 'calunnia' est loin d'être son travail le plus appréciable.. cependant: Sans doute vous connaissez tout un tas de basses sexagénaires sans 'trémolo' et sans aucune dégradation. Puis c'est un baryton, puis je ne sais quoi encore. A vous suivre, on se demande par quel moyen il soit parvenu à cette carrière qu'il a eue... Si juste on vous avait eu à l'époque pour bien éclairer le public contre le danger d'avoir devant les yeux un interprète extraordinaire de tant de répertoires divers.
Bon coupons la poire en deux. Disons que j'avais encore en tête une intervention de Roselyne Bachelot, l'ancienne ministre bateleur de foire dire au cours d'une émission qu'elle regrettait les voix de basse d'antan, en citant BC avec lequel "on descendait à la cave" tant sa voix était profonde, ce qui soit dit en passant en dit long sur la vanité, l'inculture et la bêtise de nos dirigeants.
Ce chanteur est doué d'une prestance certaine et d'une voix puissante, mais je trouve sa façon de chanter datée et artificielle. Je le trouve bien plus convaincant dans le bas médium/médium.
Peut-être est-il devenu victime de sa propre notoriété. En effet, peu de personnes le décriraient comme un _basso profondo_. Mais c'était un terrible Boris, Philippe II, etc. Et très apprécié par les Russes eux-mêmes, auparavant comme maintenant. Ici, c'est un exercice un peu étrange qu'il accomplit, mais le résultat musical, peut-être intéressant en soi, est tellement contraire avec ce qui se fait comme Don Basilio aujourd'hui, que plein de gens se demandent ce qu'il a voulu faire. Je dois écouter des Don Basilio d'autrefois, peut-être y aurait-il des réponses.
