Her debut single "Wuthering Heights" was something nobody had ever seen/heard before - her genius was already cemented - it's a rabbit hole worth going down!

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) discovered her when she was about 16 and still in school. In 1978 she released her first album ‘The Kick Inside’, with the monsterhit Wuthering Heights. In 1979 she did a tour but was so overwhelmed by the instant fame and attention that she became sort of a hermit and hardly performed for the next 35 years.

I wouldn't say that was strictly true, even though most of her performances are lip-synced there are a few videos out here of Kate performing a song live. Of course there was Kate's 22 date concert residency "Before The Dawn" where all of the tickets sold out in under 15 minutes. Most of the concert consisted of Kate performing her two concept pieces first "The Ninth Wave" (the 2nd side of the iconic "Hounds Of Love" album) and "A Sky Of Honey" the 2nd disc of her Aerial double album.

She wrote about being able to exchange places in order to understand each other. And, yes. That's Kate dancing.

Talking about this song some years later (1992) Kate said that the meaning of this song was:
I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman, can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each others roles, if we could actually be in each others place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised! And I think it would be lead to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either... you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, "well, no, why not a deal with God!"
And of course Kate herself acknowledged even in this statement about the song this is a deal that can really never be made, because as she herself said, the only way it could be done was if either God or the devil were to grant it. This idea of an unachievable goal - of truly and fully understanding each other and how we feel about things - was the very heart of this song from the beginning.
Speaking at the time of it release Kate said:
"It's really saying if there's a possibility of being able to swap places with each other that they'd understand how the other one felt, that when they were saying things that weren't meant to hurt, that they weren't meant sincerely, that they were just misunderstood. In some ways, I suppose the basic difference between men and women, where if we could swap places in a relationship, we'd understand each other better"
But then she added the telling comment:
"but this, of course, is all theoretical anyway."
In the end it is a deal that can never be struck and she knows it.
"Running Up That Hill" is still today a really fine song from one of the most original recording artists ever. Her music is incredibly diverse and it is great that recent months have brought it to more peoples' attention. it is well worth listening to the full breadth of what she has recorded - some it you will possibly hate, but some of it you will certainly love (for her music is so unfettered and not tethered to any music genre. She goes where she feels like going, regardless of how commercial it may or may not be. That is part of her magic).

It was her dancing, every note of that vocal is interesting, she never lets up on the variation of her delivery, it's all super fresh all the time.

Kate was helped a lot early in her career when David Gilmour heard one of her earliest written songs. He helped her get demos made and saw to it the right people heard them. Thanks Dave, we loved the results. Besides being a great performer, Kate is one of the smartest business minds in the industry. Formed her own company to handle the rights to her music.
