She will have you hooked if you go down the rabbit hole of her music, she’s a wonder ❤
I don't use the word genius lightly but Kate Bush deserves it. Utterly original, always fascinating. For me, Cloudbusting is her masterpiece but all her stuff is wonderful. Glad you enjoyed it.
This timeless song from 1985, has got considerable coverage in America, due to its key use in the latest series of "Stranger Things" which meant that it reached number 3 in the billboard hot 100 and topped some other billboard charts including the Global 200 - the massive surge of interest in "Running Up That Hill" meant it became a massive worldwide smash hit which even exceeded Kate's worldwide smash back in 1978, her debut single "Wuthering Heights". The idea behind the song is of a couple whose love for each other is causing problems in their relationship, so what if a deal could be made with God, so they swap places to see things from others point of view? This idea is sometimes referred as "stepping in the others shoes". BTW Kate is dancing in the official video, the reason the music video features interpretive dancing at all, is that Kate thought that other music videos (of that era) hadn't been treating dancing in a serious manner, so she wanted this video to showcase some proper serious dancing.
A quick background summary of Kate Bush, Kate started writing songs at about 11 years old, adding more complex lyrics from 13 onwards. By her mid-teens she had written more than a hundred songs (some reports say nearer two hundred), the family made demo recordings of about fifty, in an attempt to attract the attention of record companies without any success. Until a friend of family passed the demos to David Gilmour guitarist for pink Floyd, he was interested and ultimately paid for time at studio with session musicians to make professional recordings of three songs from Kate extensive catalogue which he selected. It was those professional recordings that he passed onto EMI executives when he was asked about new talents - when EMI listened they wanted to sign Kate up immediately, but they had to wait until she had left school, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16 years old.
EMI paid Kate a retainer which she used to improve her piano playing, voice lessons and also dance & mime lessons from Lindsay Kemp (who had also taught David Bowie dance). Kate also fronted a pub band that one of her brothers had put together. Eventually EMI called Kate back to work on her debut album "The Kick Inside" although two songs were taken from the professional recordings that Davie Gilmour had paid for - one of those songs was written when she was 13.
Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in January 1978 and it was so different to everything else in the singles chart and became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number in a number of countries around the world and charting highly in others. When it got to number 1 in the UK, Kate became the first female artist to have a self written song reach number one, the 1st of numerous records and milestones that Kate has set in the UK and album charts.
When "The Kick Inside" was released later in 1978, it sold a million copies in the UK and reached number three in the album chart.
Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director. Kate was also heavily involved in the staging of both of her concert tours - 1979 "Tour Of Life" and the 2014 concert residency "Before The Dawn". Kate has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who followed her, she is considered to be a musical icon and pioneer.
Kate was credited as a co-producer on her third album "Never For Ever" and was the sole producer on her fourth album "The Dreaming" and every subsequent studio album.
If you're interested in listening to more Kate Bush songs I and many other Kate Bush fans will be happy to provide suggestions
"she was credited as Co producer on Never for ever"
She is co producer of this album with the sound engeneer Jon Kelly, a real fan know that was a punch against producer Andrew Powell...
Just sayin'
You should see her video for Wutnering Heights - she is as much a dancer as she is singer. Just a wonderful performance artist!!
My favourite as a very young girl, a long, long time ago.
@@cbisme6414 Well … I was 5, when that single came out 😄 (a long long time ago! LOL)
@@rachel-in-the-208 I was 11-12 years old, the 6 yrs between us was a big difference when I was a kid but age difference doesn't mean anything to me & I'm glad that is the case. 💜
Sometimes I really miss the 80's but I tend to only remember the good times and forget the home life i came from. Today I'm at peace but I just had to write back to you. (Nostalgia??) 😁🤨🤔
@@aryansigrid I think a lot of people feel the same as you. My home life wasn’t that great either … but I really loved the 80s.
@@rachel-in-the-208 Making me feel old. I'm 3 years older than Kate.
cool reaction my bro...kate bush is such a unique artist witchy stuff, yes sir
Yes, it is Kate dancing. She also wrote, sang, and produced the song, directed the video and was involved in the choreography.
So fortunate to be in this era when the song came out and to have it rekindled again in this day and age is fantastic 🤩
One of my favourite lines in this entire song is when Kate goes down into her "chest-voice" & says @
2:22........See how deep the bullet lies.........
Great song from the British artist. Kool vid for the 80's.
It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities.
It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem.
Another of her great songs is This Woman's work.
She's an English artist.
It’s about a woman and man swapping places, speaking about the double class that women have to deal with with the sexism that exists in our society
Please react to Kate Bush -This Woman's Work -Thanks!!!
Love Kate, she is artistic, a great musician, songstress & writer 🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧xxxx p.s the song is about her being a man & him being a woman to have a greater understanding of each other
Bush said the lyrics address the inability of men and women to understand each other. She imagined that by making "a deal with God", they could exchange places and reach a greater understanding. The song was originally titled "A Deal with God", but representatives at EMI Records feared this would make it unpopular in more religious countries. The album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)".
The music video features Bush performing an interpretive dance with dancer Misha Hervieu. The video was directed by David Garfath while the dance routines were choreographed by Diane Grey.Bush and Hervieu are shown wearing grey hakama.Bush wanted the dancing in "Running Up That Hill" to be more of a classical performance. She stated that dance in music videos was "being used quite trivially, it was being exploited: haphazard images, busy, lots of dances, without really the serious expression, and wonderful expression, that dance can give. So we felt how interesting it would be to make a very simple routine between two people, almost classic, and very simply filmed. So that's what we tried, really, to do a serious piece of dance."
The choreography draws upon contemporary dance with a repeated gesture suggestive of drawing a bow and arrow, intercut with surreal sequences of Bush and Hervieu searching through crowds of masked strangers. At the climax of the song, Bush's partner withdraws from her and the two are then swept away from each other and down a long hall in opposite directions by an endless stream of anonymous figures wearing masks made from pictures of Bush and Hervieu's faces. MTV chose not to show this video (at the time of its original release) and instead used a playback "live" performance of the song recorded at a promotional appearance on the BBC TV show Wogan. According to Paddy Bush, "MTV weren't particularly interested in broadcasting videos that didn't have synchronized lip movements in them. They liked the idea of people singing songs.".
Loved this reaction. Clicked because I love Kate Bush and you being so touched by the dancing. And totally out of context, but I have to say you look a bit like a better looking Eddie Murphy, and he's a good looking guy 😁 Hugs from Sweden
