Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on RUclips, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on RUclips. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on RUclips, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.

Shawn, she’s singing in character… the ghost of Cathy coming back to haunt Heathcliff. In the 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, Catherine Earnshaw falls in love with Heathcliff, whom her family had taken in as a boy, but had shunned and abused him. She felt she could not marry him, but marries a wealthy farmer instead. Heathcliff runs away but returns years later with a fortune, discovering that Cathy is pregnant. She dies after giving birth to a daughter, and he calls on her ghost to haunt him until he dies. That is the basis for the song.

I'm embarrassed to say that despite being a totally eclectic rocker since the early '60's, with a ton of British rockers filling my playlists, I had never heard of Kate Bush until about 2 years ago. It took me another year to finally listen to her on the internet and this is the song I chose first. Man, I was blown away! First, I had to reacquaint myself with the story and then check the lyrics. After about 5 more listening's of this song, I hit all her other RUclips videos I could find and then just hit Ebay for her CDs. I bought about 7. I'm not surprised that England hid her from me, just that it took so long to find her. Took a lot less time to discover Rory, Camel and some others. This video was from 1978 and I'm pretty sure way ahead of MTV and therefore ahead of her time. I think she was a musical/production genius.

Here in Australia she was an instant hit back in 1978. We all loved her and us girls would copy her dance routines. Have you seen the video showing heaps of women performing this, all dressed in red, doing the choreo? Apparently it's an annual event!

The first video in a white dress was better. This second one was made for the US market.
Wuthering Heights was released as a single in the US in 1978 and radio programmers turned against it.

In Britain she’s always been sorta the female Bowie. Obviously orders of magnitude less famous but throughout my life anyway she’s always been a sorta mythical artist who hardly makes any public appearances but is held in a similar regard. I’m fact I don’t even think I’ve ever seen an interview with her tbh

She did write this at 18, but she had been writing songs for years, Her second single, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, she wrote when she was 12. She later won the prestigious Ivor Novello award for that song.

Heard this in my co-workers truck back in '84. Didn't know her until years later but was and still am captivated by Kate Bush. Beautiful, talented singer, professional dancer. I am sure she was like 16-17 when she recorded this.

Kate Not only is a singer songwriter but a composer, music producer, choreographer, dancer, and also co produces some of her video clips a hugely talented woman. Originally her family tried to get her a record deal unsuccessfully a mutual friend of Kate's family and Dave Gillmore of Pink Floyd asked Dave to listen to her demo tape and give some suggestions, Dave must have been impressed he not only suggested she should make a professional demo he paid for the studio session and a producer friend of his to produce the tape. Kate's family took the new tape to EMI they signed her on the spot.

Kate was a student of the great mime and Interpretive Dance master Lindsay Kemp, as was David Bowie before her. This was the first self written song by a woman to reach number one in the UK charts...and she was only 19.

This was so unique when it first came out that it blew everything else that was around at the time out of the water. This was the first thing she ever released and was so strange and mesmerizing that it was the only thing I listened to for months ( at least the album it came from The Kick Inside ) so every note of that guitar solo at the end is tattooed on my brain to this day.
Regarding her writing the song at 18, it is amazing but many years later another British female singer who blew me away also, Amy Winehouse released her classic Love Is A Losing Game which she wrote aged 16 and is included on her Back to Black album. It wasn`t such a big hit but was covered by George Michael and Prince and won an Ivor Novello Award for the best song of 2008. This is the famous link to her recording of the demo and although there are many videos of her singing it live and many of them are amazing this is my favorite and well worth watching , if you`re interested
    ruclips.net/video/4L9-AvjsB6g/видео.html .
And yes... at the end she asks the technician if that was alright

Because everyone lives in their headphones & current streaming services, I’ve noticed many don’t know the classic stories, such as Wuthering Heights & Alice In Wonderland when they watch White Rabbit.. So it’s great that via reactions a lot of Gen Z , Alpha, even Zennials, will be exposed & perhaps read the books or watch the movies.

Remember this song was written about the famous classic English novel Wuthering Heights. I loved that book and read it as a young teen.
Here’s the kicker… every year on Kate’s birthday (and the author’s same birthday) women all across the world meet in fields dressed in red and dance to Wuthering Heights. Check all the great video’s. Women, kids, men, dogs all dancing and having a great time ❤🎉😊

See? This is one of the reasons I like your channel better than other reactors who don't research the songs at all. It can make a HUGE difference, understanding the inspirations for a tune. The whole time I was watching your reaction, I was thinking "Ohhh, I wish he knew that Cathy is supposed to be a ghost!" and then, seconds later...you DID! So satisfying to see how it amplified your feeling about the song. Keep up the great work!

This is her signature and break out song and my personal favorite of hers. When you picked this video you may have seen "Version Two" or "Red Version" somewhere in the description because there are two official videos for this song. Version One, also known as "The White Version" is the original performed in studio and with some stunning effects that bring out the ethereal theme of the song and which somewhat make the song make more sense. You might enjoy watching Version One some time when you get a few minutes - Kate Bush really shows off her interpretive dance and choreography expertise in Version One.

Hi Shawn and thanks for a very enjoyable reaction video. One thing that is worth noting about this song is that the record company didn't agree to have it as her first single because they respected her wishes and were willing trust her. It was because they were convinced that the song would be a flop and once it was a flop it would teach her a lesson about who really knew what they talking about and would force her to depend upon them. As it turned out she was correct - but it was a huge risk, but one she was willing to take because she was convinced it was the right thing to do.
When the first first session of recordings was finished some of the crew went to the local pub to talk about her. They agreed that she was very talented and completely unlike any other new girl at the piano kind of act - she was too daring, bold and creative to fit into that idea. They were convinced that she would either be a complete failure or else 'start a revolution' but none of them were certain as to which it would be. It turned out to be a revolution.
But her career is littered with decisions and choices she made that could have been career ending - she took so many risks, was so experimental, and so completely iron-willed about only doing what she wanted to do, the way she wanted to do it. But she herself has also said that the threat of it being career ending was part of the attraction, part of the thrill of doing what she did.
If you delve into a deep dive of her music, you are in for a ride. As others have said, Babooshka is worth a visit next.
    Thanks again.

As a footnote, EMI wanted to issue another song as Kate's debut single. But Kate held out for Wuthering Heights and was proved right when it hit No 1 in the UK and several other countries. Even as a teenager, Kate knew what she wanted and fought for it - not an insignificant victory for a young female in the male dominated music industry of 1978!

  • @leslieturner8276
    @leslieturner8276 7 месяцев назад

Since (as others have mentioned) Kate taught herself to plag the piano (she did polish up her skills in the period from when she was signed by EMI at 16 and when she started on her first album), this also impacts her songwriting. Kate never attended any music school and thus was never introduced to musical theory. Indeed, Wuthering Heights is a prime example of a song that goes against established songwriting patterns, the overall structure of it is very unusual, there are very unusual key changes coupled with changes to timing.
Now, unusual key changes and/or timing changes tend to be a characteristic of the majority of Kate Bush songs, Kate creates songs that sound nice to her and she also uses the music to convey emotions to the listener.
Her songwriting ability is instinctive, not based on musical theory or training, so I can fully understand why some people say that she's a female David Bowie.

it is different.although the one you did gives you the location it stops her being able to do the dance routine to her fullest also the white dress and mist says ghost more than fadeing her in and out at the end of this video.
she has a quite speaking voice and stays out of the showbiz scene.

Way back when this song was released; the only version I saw was the first one. The way in webbing the video was done does give you a haunted performance from Bush. This song and "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" were two of my favorites from her. Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love, and Cloudbusting round out my top 5.
I've said this many times in hopes fans will give it a real listen to; as I think it deserves to be remembered a long side this song. Pat Benatar was a big fan of Kate's. She even covered this song; as well as using the album's title later in her song "All Fired Up." Benatar is a trained singer, and although she doesn't teach the same range as Bush, what she does vocally is great.

When this song was released there was barely any way to watch a music video. MTV did not exist. The internet was about 20 years off at best. Everyone listened unlike today where a video seems to make a song rather than the reverse.
The song is based on characters from the book "Wuthering Heights". Most people at the time had read the book and loved her interpretation. (No-one reads anything other than comments on Boobtoob these days hence the collapse of contemporary art).
