La Valse d'Amélie - Yann Tiersen // Piano

  • A more waltz-like, melancholy take on the track!
Only after recording did I realize how different my interpretation is from how I hear it played in a lot of other videos, but that's how I've been practicing it for a while now and that's what feels most right to me! I usually feel more comfortable taking a track slower if I know there are enough different interpretations of it out there already. More to choose from!
I've been recording so much less, it's a rough winter. The scarce snow days we get always make me want to try and make a video, but other than that I'm stuck in "In Progress" land with a few other projects, and otherwise, I play more for myself lately. I'm on a Chopin roll.
Speaking of projects--I love medleys, but man do they take a while to finish! So, in between working on more time-consuming things, I think I'll share some simpler pieces to keep up the recording habit. The short, cold winter days have been really tiring. I can't wait for spring.
    See you next piece!

I play piano since two decades now. This is by far one of the best pieces that has ever been written. And you played it just to perfection. The rather slow speed is way better than Tiersen's Version. It is more calm, giving a whole new dark atmosphere. Thank you caliko

Such a classic piece. At first glance the piece seems pretty simple but whom have tried to play it know how much work on the interpretation and dynamic has to be done to make it sound right. Tbh every pianist has its own interpretation, nontheless you played it perfectly; you made me feel something with your version and thats goes without saying is the biggest achievement for any performer/artist. Great playing, great sound, great video, as always!

I love this song and I'm so happy to hear you cover it.
It reminds me of the mundane beauty of things one can take for granted every day. The sunlight hitting your bedroom window, sitting on the grass while watching and looking back at life so far.
    Melancholic, as you said.
Anyways, thank you, I really needed this

Thanks for this, Caliko! The Amélie soundtrack was very significant to me when I was younger, and hearing your take on it made me smile. I listened to it on loop while I worked - snow falling softly outside, just through my window - and my morning melted away peacefully.

Hi Ms. Caliko. I just wanted to tell you from when I first discovered your amazing channel last year. I have been truly inspired by you that I actually bought an 88 key keyboard just to learn how to play piano. Because of this new found hobby, it brought new joy to my life and I have been hooked ever since! I only started learning just 3 months ago. It's way more difficult compared to playing guitar not gonna lie 😱. I would like to ask.... What could be your best advise for someone who just started learning piano at the late age (I'm 27 btw) and with practically zero knowledge. As always, I wish all the best for you and more uploads to come!😊🙏

Wow, happy to hear you're enjoying piano! I'd say especially initially, focus on technique and where you place your wrist - try to avoid playing with flat fingers, there are plenty of videos on youtube that go through that in detail, it will help you plenty later on and make things easier in the long run. Exercises can be boring and suck, but scales really, really do help! So I'd say definitely try learning those. Other than that, play what you enjoy, and don't get discouraged if you can't seem to get something. Move on, try something else, and when you come back and try again you might find you've progressed somewhere along the way! And don't be afraid to simplify things for yourself, it's meant to be fun for you, most of all :) Good luck, and thank you for listening!

Ah yes, the famous song that gets played every yearly concert of my teacher. Always refused to play it since it's so ordinary...
Until now, hmm, I finally might give it a try. :)
Let's indeed hope this winter goes by quickly. It's a terrible one so far :(

Hope things improve for you! Rough winters all around...
The other famous Amelie track has been forced onto me enough that I'm a bit tired of it, but somehow, I've always completely avoided hearing this one. That's probably why it sounded so nice to me when I first heard it quite recently - it really is a beautiful composition, though it's technically very simple to play.
