Her voice is so elegant... it's almost like she's not singing she's speaking but it's so awesome... she's unique there really isn't anybody else like her. Her MTV performance is actually better than the studio albums that speaks for itself
Uhhh...they were't "New Wave", they were what became known as "alternative". "New Wave" was dominated by moogs and other electronic sounds and was more "poppy" and less "folk". I was a teenager when all this stuff was going on.
Robert Buck! The last minute of this shows why he is one of the greatest guitar players ever--and NOboDY like him! Twenty-one years, a long time since the Bottom Line...who knows where the time went...
So talented and her voice is so beautiful. The first time I heard it, it captivated me! Didn't even know what band was playing on a M-TV video. I've been a big fan of Natalie ever since.
Thanks for the upload. Great live versions. I first heard 'Trouble Me' on UK late night radio in 1989, and just had to find out who it was by. Been listening to 10000 Maniacs and Natalie Merchant ever since. Saw her play several tiny venues here last summer. She sang quite a few 10000 Maniacs songs and still has an awesome voice.
Oooh. Little glitch by Natalie there in Trouble Me. So this is the first time I've seen this performance and it's super tight and amazing. I watch the latest version of the band with the new singer and it just isn't there. Not even close. And kudos to the person mixing for television. This mix is amazing. Drums are super punchy.
This two songs were the first big singles i knew of the Maniacs down here in the south side. And Blind Man's Zoo were the first CD of them i bought. Very nice. I loved two to see this video. Thanks friend.
She wanted to separate from them artisticly, so that wasn't an option. I think Robert Buck did perform with her a bit after she left the band, he was her primary musical collaborator in the band. Sadly he died of complications from his alcoholism, if I remember, shortly after the band tried to make a come back with a different lead and the original band leader (that Natalie kind of forced out when it became obvious that her muse was a bit more popular than his).
The record came out in may of 1989, so this performance should be from that year for sure. This video is rare, because the host (who i'm not going to mention) was the substitute host until 1992 for "Mr Excitement"
Do you think there's any chance Natalie will play with 10000 Maniacs again??? Does she realize how much concert revenue they could generate with ticket prices from $125 to $500?
@@Wizardofgosz no, she just doesn’t feel the need to look back on something in the pas that she moved on from. Plus, Rob Buck’s been dead for 20 years, and the Maniacs have had Mary Ramsey with them since the 90s
@@evanhughes1510 That's a bizarre reason. The band was incredible. I have friends who graduated with her from Jamestown high school. I know Rob's dead but I would happily replace him. I know all their tunes.

So true - "Her MTV performance is actually better than the studio albums that speaks for itself"
@@sanjaygandhi7962 Performance of this song on Letterman is off the hook.
Her voice is one of a kind
Her personality seems to glow when she performs ❤ a mix of strength and beauty ❤
She’s as lovely as her voice.
On steroids.
@garyconner6151 what?
She is singing both vocals. Is there anybody these days that is even capable of shit like this??
What a true talent.
Nope.
Incredible talent... we really don't experience such music anymore.........................................
Her voice is really great here . I loved the 10,000M !
Great musicians. Natalie has amazing vocal phrasing. I love the irony of the upbeat melodies with the melancholy lyrics.
Beautifully put...timeless brilliance !
She commands the stage.
Fell in love with this band in 93...
there albums are timeless.
Went to see them in Cleveland because they played here the day my sister got married
"When a boy was boy and a girl was a girl, and they found each in a wicked world." Oh, Natalie, what a lovely voice. Eighties New Wave rock rules!

I agree, every instrument was clean and huge in the mix, sounded so good !
Jerome Augustyniak is a superb drummer.

When you listen to her sing she"s mesmerizing!!
My wife.couldnt stand her.lol.she knew I loved this woman.
She was one in a million. They were never going to find another like her. Those guys should have become her backing band and let her have her way.

Fun fact, the song Me in Honey by R.E.M. and Kate Pierson was written as a response to this song; describing the perspective of the man.

This was the inspiration for Wednesday's iconic dress.
3 people are troubled.

Natalie merchant was a babe in those days

@@evanhughes1510 fake news not true at all.
no it didn’t.
Natalie had spinal surgery, not from a stroke.
