When i first started with music production I basically tried to learn on my own. Then i always started with some plugins on the master, because i found out it really helped me narrow down the final sound. I really had no clue how to mix at that point, but it helped me out a lot. Then after a couple of years i heard from some people that you shouldn't do that, so i quit doing it. Some years after that again I realized that how i started out mixing was actually the right way, and not how those people told me to do it. It made me go from a bold mixer to a scared moron behind the faders. I am back where i started. Bold moves makes bold mixes!
The weird thing is I've been mixing like that since 2003 and didn't know if it was wrong or not,I guess there's isn't a wrong or right way of mixing as long as the song comes out right..Great tips though Gram..Very inspiring
Stroke of genius and a wise move getting this guy involved Waves. Thank you. He has a very "Clean and Open" approach. He's "Clean" by his humility and "Open" by not exaggerating the limits of his skills and experience - he can keep it fun. He's very accessible for new guys and learners. I'm looking forward to the next instalments. Thanks Waves and thanks Mr Cochrane. Grand job!
Ha,, Graham, congrats on working with Waves :D,,, Thanks for all you do :D,,, you think your blessed, ha,,, !!! I'm blessed with yours, others, and many close friends content, in this industry,,,
I don't know what all the fuzz is about. Graham has been doing his thing at TRR for six or seven years, besides being in the business for more than 15. Still people just complain. The fact that waves has reached out to him to do these videos is just a way to tipping their hat to someone who they think could help them market their product. Im pretty sure that he's been using their stuff for quite a while, he's said it on a number of his own tutorials. But still he straight up tells us that you don't need the expensive "gear" to get a great mix. A person in his position, with the kind of audience he has on his own will always be reached by the big boys (waves) when they see an opportunity to market their stuff. I still think that, as he has always said, you can make music sound great with the stock plugins on your daws. I will always appreciate what he does on TRR, taking the time to share his knowledge. Heres to making better music, now.
Edgar, could not agree with you more. Some people will never be pleased no matter what one does. Graham has helped many of us reach our goal to create music with very limited resources. Graham has been instrumental and has literally speaking created a "Recording Revolution".
Amazing isn't it.. all these bedroom producers think they can mix better than those who do it for a living... Before the net came along, knowledge was very hard to come by, so be grateful people are taking time out to pass on Thier knowledge.. peace..
I love the simplicity of this. In the past I have has six or seven plugins on may master chain. getting it down to the most effective essentials is usually where greatness lies.
Great to see someone like Graham working with Waves like this. I find both him and Joe Gilder quite grounded and realistic in what they do. And as a parallel I think the waves bundles have become more realistic in the deals they offer out from time to time for those working on a budget, or in a home studio environment. It would be great to see someone like Graham working with Waves to put out videos entirely focused on those more affordable bundles such as Waves Gold.
Hey Graham!!! Its so good to see you at waves Audio. I have been watching & learning from your videos for so long. Congrats !!! Also I am a big fan of waves plugins & use them in all my projects.
For me this video omits the crucial information of HOW does one even put plugins onto a master bus vs putting plugs on an individual track. The other monster thing is that the adjustments being made here are so subtle that I almost cannot hear them at all and can only notice the improvements because you point them out as being improvements - so it convinces me that I should not ever consider mixing anything ever.
Why do you change the dynamics of the whole mix before touching the tracks one by one? İ mean,İ'll have to bypass all the plugins on the master channel when mixing tracks into each other,if İ start like this.Of course this is my point of view,İ just want to know the idea behind this.A good mix is a good mix at the end no matter how you do it and what plugins you use. Thanks
Why would Graham add the tape emulator as the final plugin versus the 1st on the master buss chain? Seems like the plugin wouldn't be so subtle after you add the EQ and compression.. just curious..
Anyone else set the SSL bus compressor with a fast attack and release, 4-1 ratio just to duck the snare drum 3-4 db? That's my favorite way of using especially for rock and metal music.
Why do you put the plugins on the master fader? Are there eq and effects on the single channels? I watched a video were a mastering engineer said not to put effects or eq on the master fader
Hey Graham, just finished watching this whole series at waves.com. Great tutorials and looking for some more! I had one question re: the pre mastering video where you put a limiter on the mix buss. Do I turn it off before submitting for mastering? Thanks for everything :)
I'm not Waves, but if you want to bring the overall volume up for being able to hear everything better, or if you mix really hot and you're peaking over 0db then yes, use limiter at the end of the mixing chain. You can also use it for dithering your mix (if your limiter has a dithering option) when you bounce it to a single .wav track for mastering. You don't have to take it out prior to mastering, just make sure you're not slamming the mix too hard. Cheers!
oh no. I Hope this Is not the beginning of the end for Recording Revolution. Sold out to waves. TRR is the longest lasting Email subscription I have, And I always recommend the name Because of the Mindset not the gear.
The only way to get a good mix is outboard analog gears!!! I've triyng just now and the difference is considerable! Yes, of course, plugins are doing a nice job but it seems like you need always of 1 for to get 100...
I could never hear any difference in the on/off examples in the video. Maybe it's my old ears. Maybe it's my lo-fi computer speakers. I can hear the difference of some other effects like delay and reverb. But these are too subtle for me.
Make plugin to reduce the reverberation of the room and all that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! Сделайте плагин для уменьшения реверберации комнаты и все такое !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the mix doesn´t sound "master-channel-ready". it lacks everything a good mix has. even the basic levels aren´t right. i know it´s for demo purpose, but please invest some more hours in the mix. what do people learn from this video: don´t take your time on setting up a good mix, don´t work hard, just trow some plugs on the master fader.
He said in the first minute that this was before he mixed anything also at the end. It's not mixed it's a common technique to allow you to mix faster. Watch it again maybe, have fun!
Graham Cochrane is the guy who keeps telling people that you don't need anything in a studio except for one cheap condenser mic. I wouldn't put very much weight into what he says...
I think the only thing wrong about the video is the title. There's nothing wrong with EQ ing or compressing your mix in a subtle way. I was expecting some different content.
Made a video about unlinking stereo compression that is very helpful in making a stable stereo image! Here you go:) ruclips.net/video/coMJguzkx-o/видео.html

Look at Graham gettin it in. Thats whats up. Keep doing ur thang. Thanks for all the love and tutorials u have showed us along the way.

This is exactly who waves needs right now.
This Has Just 100% Transformed My Mix!

How ironic, I was starting to think about mastering on my track and you guys come up... Talk about timing!!!
My bedroom mixes are about to take to my well-deserved pending helicopter, Grammy, and screaming fans chasing me to another galaxy. Thanks
How’s your mixes coming along
@@bigxrecords7375 Great. Clearing space in my place for the Grammys and AMA, etc. Perfection isn't feasible but getting as close as possible.

ayyy way tO go graham. good things happen to good people
Isn't it ironic that the greatest engineers are mixing the worst songs...
thats the REAL challenge , to make shit sound sweet.
four fing This is the first song that I’ve heard Graham work on that I like 😆
True......
Love you Graham!! I just found your channel and vids and your advice has taken me so far in a short amount of time. Thank you, sir. Bless you
Crystal clear explanation, nice video. Thanks!
Love it! Very helpful. Thank you. Get it Graham! Love seeing you work for Waves too
I Like the Tape, Comp is ok... not the EQ!! Thanks Graham nice video keep up the good work!!
Nice work my friend. Very subtle but effective.
CLA Mixdown is an awesome all in one plugin for doing this. Recommended.
throwback to 2006 when music was still recorded to tape 🙏🏻

2 out of these I use on my mix bus every session. Instead of Q10, I prefer the C6 multi-band compressor.
Is those techniques useful for drums machine also? 🤔
they made a song with a alarm clock...... ok
That song is so amazing
You are a legend dude🕶️🕶️
Do you guys have a run through like this for the cubasis 3 waves plugins?
Hi there, feel free to check out a tutorial which is available on this page: www.waves.com/audio-plugins-ios
ssleq, sslcomp, spl passeq and then the Mighty l316. works great!
Why would Graham add the tape emulator as the final plugin versus the 1st on the master buss chain? Seems like the plugin wouldn't be so subtle after you add the EQ and compression.. just curious..

Thank you for this video!!!
I have the Waves bundle, but don't have that SSL compressor?!How can that be?
Thanks for the tips!
Should one send to "Master" with those plugins on in the master bus?
Interesting video and presentation... Trev
Hey Graham, just finished watching this whole series at waves.com. Great tutorials and looking for some more! I had one question re: the pre mastering video where you put a limiter on the mix buss. Do I turn it off before submitting for mastering? Thanks for everything :)
I have noticed you have some cool songs on your videos. Do you actually have them on itunes or a cd?
Is “every” track being bussed to these plugins on the buss mix fader or just the bass/kick/synth/vocal elements?
What about a limiter at the end of the chain while mixing? Is it good practice? I'm guessing you take it out prior to mastering. But is it okay?
I'm not Waves, but if you want to bring the overall volume up for being able to hear everything better, or if you mix really hot and you're peaking over 0db then yes, use limiter at the end of the mixing chain. How do I use the plug in? Once I download a mixing software I dont know how to add it
Lmao
Where can I hear the final mix of the song?
I think he has all his songs on bandcamp
The only way to get a good mix is outboard analog gears!!! I've triyng just now and the difference is considerable!
Yes, of course, plugins are doing a nice job but it seems like you need always of 1 for to get 100...
I miss the life in this song.

muy pero muy buen tuto grasias
Doesnt Graham preach using stock plugs? lol why's he working for waves now?
No option for me because the plugins require very much processing power...
I'm indeed thinking about upgrading but I'm waiting for more powerful and (hopefully more or less) customizable macbooks...
mickey5241 studiorack? It's free.
Otherwise, get a new music maker box. 👍
Wow... nice
I dont really here everything you talk about. Sure, I could complain, but I decide to train my ears, until I hear it.
upgrade your listening environment mate!
Thank you. I hear much, but not everything.
I think its more a training thing
Use monitors and make sure the quality of the video is 1080p
Make plugin to reduce the reverberation of the room and all that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

A Gate maybe ?
Cool..

Ehm, he hasn't begun with the mixing yet, this is a pre-mix "tip".
You totally missed the point
what's the point then?

Strange mix... Totally lacks something top end sizzle like hihats or ride cymbals /:
It's clearly not mixed!
He just set up the master bus. It's common practice to mix into your mastering chain.
Michal Yeah, but even for demo purposes you could set up at least the levels...
.
its not mixed yet….lol …people...

any music genre that sounds better with 100% of the lowend cut sucks.
Awful !
