I like having DVDs. It is a physical form of a movie or TV show. Depending on streaming, I use it as an addition. the movie or TV show may not be available. If I have it on DVD, I will always have access to it. Streaming is fine for movies/shows that haven't been available in DVD form though. It is nice to have access to both.

Each new version cost more $ too. I still buy some physical media, but it’s mostly video games because I can play one for weeks and they hold value pretty well.

I love DVDs and Blu-rays because of the bonus features. The extras are an awesome addition to the movie or TV series that I want to keep in my library. Also, as others have pointed out, you can't trust streaming services to always provide the movie/TV series you like. It's nice to be able to pull out a Blu-ray to watch without it being behind a paywall.

Anytime you go virtual, you are buying into the promise of permanence. Be it movies, games, or currency, virtual possessions are a button push away from vanishing. Some folks value convenience, and I get that, but there are unacceptable risks that go with it. A couple of examples: Gone with the Wind unaltered, and any legacy music that hasn’t been autotuned.

Streaming services come and go. My biggest problem with streaming services is that their content goes away. Something I wanted to watch just isn't there when I finally decide to watch it.
Of course this is also a problem with over-the-air stations, showing a movie at only one time and cancelling well-loved series.
    DVDs solve this problem.
I have never rented a DVD from RedBox, but I rarely ever rented a videotape from one of those stores.
I've once bought a few DVD in a store, mostly Costco, and the closeout bins at Walmart and Dollar General.
We've always been all about Netflix until they ended their DVD service last September.
Now (as with videotapes) I depend on my public library and on Amazon.
I have sets of some of my favorite TV series and my favorite movies. I don't have to worry about them going away.
I get Ion on my over-the-air channels and I don't watch it there. I prefer MeTV, Comet, Charge and Grit (those last three are also on Sling but I just watch them over the air).

I disagree that DVD's Blu-rays and 4K ultra HD Blu-rays are dead, I think they will make a comeback, more and more people getting into owning physical medium, it the same way vinyl and cd's are making a comeback. People are getting sick of streaming services because of the cost and the content not staying on there and being removed and disappearing when people want to watch it.

DVDs are outselling all other physical media and it’s not even close, and that comes from the mouth of the former boss of Scream and Shout Factory, Cliff Macmillan who now works for Arrow Video. So DVDs are nowhere near being dead. People simply don’t want to rent physical media anymore, they’d rather buy them and own them.
Plus, a lot of Walmarts went through remodels and dropped the Redbox kiosks at that point. So that’s what happened. It’s not physical media being dead, it’s simply Walmart no longer having room to carry the kiosks.
Also, Walmart has been selling out majorly on steelbooks for DVDs, blu rays and 4Ks so the myth about physical media dying? 100% false. I can prove it because myself and other people have vouched for this by seeing shelves at Walmarts being empty due to selling out. Content creators even asked if Walmart had the new Bloody Disgusting section which sells horror movies and employees flat out said as soon as those movies were put on shelves, they immediately sold out.
So that clears it up. DVDs and other physical media are NOT dying. Redbox is because Walmart doesn’t have the kiosks as much anymore. Also, Redbox is streaming with content. So no, it’s not DVDs dying. It’s people wanting to BUY instead of RENT.

I can understand the death of Redbox rentals. Nearly everything they rent is available for viewing online. DVD sales are another matter. Maybe that slowdown is due to there being fewer movies people want to own for multiple viewings. Seeing most current movies once is enough for me. Most of the DVDs in my collection are older classic movies that are rarely equaled now.

When you ask if DVDs are dying, are we lumping together all physical media (Blue-ray, 4K UHD) or are we speaking on the DVD format specifically? If it's the latter, I would say it's most certainly "dying" and will be relegated to collectors and enthusiasts similarly to VHS. If we're speaking on physical media as a whole, no, I don't think physical media will cease to exist any time soon. Even though I do think digital is "the future" in terms of the lions share of revenue, I still believe in physical media, its strengths and advantages, and I feel it will have an enduring life amongst those inclined to seek (better?) streaming alternatives.

Honestly on e thing is the quality of the current movies and most tv shows are not of a level that most people feel are good enough to own a permanent copy in their collection.
I have a fairly decent selection of DVD's and Blurays and I find the majority of those disc are either movies which are older or considered classics and/or concert Blurays of my favorite bands again with most having originated and started playing in thee 60's and 70's.
Perhaps if the current Hollywood writers would actually come up with GOOD original material and make good movies rather than constant failed "remakes" of what were really good original movies then the sales and rentals of the disc would not be in the crapper today!
One of the biggest failures of recent Hollywood was caving in to giving the writers a raise for the substandard material that has been and still is coming out of Hollywood for quite a long time!

They are not dead but not mainstream any longer. Cassette audio tapes are having a comeback. Vinyl LP albums came back, I still buy CDs, DVDs and BlueRay to own the media. Almost no media type other than floppy discs have ever completely died. The problem with only buying streaming media is when the company goes out of business or finds a way to cheat people out of virtual ownership, they will. My daughter lost all of her Nintendo games when they closed the WII store and renamed it a few years ago. Nintendo didn't even go out of business but they found away to take away online games that millions of people paid for. Had those games been in physical media in customer's homes, they could not have stolen the purchased software.

It’s a catch-22 situation though. If not enough people rent, they can’t afford newer movies, but if they don’t have newer movies, few people rent. People gradually get out of the habit of renting, then they die. It happened to Netflix disc-by-mail too. About a year before they stopped, I noticed that most of the movies said “long wait” or “short wait” suddenly, and I realized they were selling off the discs and I left.

    Redbox is now Deadbox!!!
Seriously, this isn’t surprising, considering how much everyone is streaming. Just like everything else, this hurts people with lower incomes who can’t afford subscriptions to Netflix or other streaming services, and depended on Redbox for their entertainment. You’re right, Luke, they’ll have to go to the library for DVDs. However, the down side of that is that, much of the time, CDs and DVDs at public libraries are scratched up and sometimes can’t play. So it will be literally playing Russian Roulette in seeing if these can work. How sad!!!
And to answer your question, I think Redbox won’t be renting out videos for too much longer-no matter how much longer that may be. There just isn’t enough money in it for them to continue.
I also think DVDs should continue to be made and be available. It’s like with music, in that with a DVD (like an LP or CD), you own it and have something tangible that you can hold. You have neither with a download or a stream. People like to own things, so that they can feel like it’s theirs. There’s no feelings of ownership with a download or a stream. So long live the DVD!!!

The title of this clip is lame and a total mischaracterization - so is the commentary about DVDs. DVDs are not "dying." They are just being scaled back to a more niche market - the same place that they began.
It is also a fact that specialty and boutique Blu-Ray/DVD sellers and online retailers are exploding in number because there is a clear increasing demand, and there are many more new independent Blu-Ray/DVD retailers cropping up all the time. Just because a majority of people have foolishly embraced streaming services, there are many more physical media enthusiasts like myself who recognize that relying on streaming services is folly and not in one's best interest. And many other people are already beginning to learn that lesson the hard way, having experienced the multitude of negative consequences of relying on streaming companies (to name a few consequences: ridiculous renewing licensing fees for already made purchases, some streamers closing down and people losing their entire digital libraries, authoritarian companies editing content with no notice and no warning and censoring some things in their entirety, etc.). I suspect that very soon many mainstream types who rely on streaming will once again return to physical media - Blu-Ray/DVD sales in fact will once again increase in the near future.
Chicken Little types that claim the Blu-Ray/DVD sky is falling are just engaging in drama and perpetuating a false narrative. Yes, some major retailers like Target and Best Buy have announced that they intend to cease selling physical media, but this is simply because their business models and market realities at the present time are not conducive to allocating expensive floor space to such inventory in terms of profit margin. But this will not affect the overall Blu-Ray/DVD market - and, in fact, other retailers like Wal-Mart are increasing their physical media footprint because they have seen the reversal back to physical media writing on the wall, and other online specialty retailers like GRUV are also acting as physical media sales hubs for major studios like Universal.
Anyway, the future belong to Blu-Ray/DVD/physical media loyalists.

It wasn't a full transfer. The main reason for that was/is cost and availability. If Blu-Ray fully won, more computers would have come with Blu-Ray dives as the standard. From what I've recall over the years, it went from DVD-RW to Blu-Ray(think player) as an option/upgrade, to dropping the optical standard. Think the reason, why Blu-Ray didn't fully take over is due to cost, with few benefits.

    • @thedude5040

@@thedude5040 please reread; was giving a history lesson of sorts. From DVD only, to Blu-Ray as maybe an option to no/very few DVD drives left in computers. If Blu Ray truly won, there would have been very little to no transition; think CD to DVD. Think the reason it never fully caught on was twofold, first the cost has always been several times more expensive than DVD. An example is today for a bluray burner is around 100 vs maybe 30 for DVD Burner. Back in the day(mid 00s) if memory serves for an internal BluRay Burner(for a desktop), was around 500 vs maybe 100 for DVD burner(all before inflation). This lead me to the second point Blu Ray are better than DVD if you care about getting the absolute best picture quality that you can out of a movie. But the tradeoff is one will be losing unique menus, and extra content that was available on DVD. It was one of those things where from a technical standpoint Blu-Ray might be better; However due to how it was implemented(ie not including everything from past releases), it really only applied to the most hardcore movie buffs.

I STRONGLY DISLIKE FEAR MONGERING. You are NOT in a position to proclaim the end of DVD’s. Once Amazon stops selling DVD’s, that will probably end the sale of NEW DVD’s.
What YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT, is who do DVD’s appeal to? The elderly… like my Mom. RedBox locations seem to have dwindled over the past decade. Why is that? I can tell you why… because people have to go out to the RedBox’s. That’s bad in hot weather and bad weather. Some people are physically unable to go out. Some people get their daily exercise just by going to their porch to retrieve a package. Amazon ships right to a customer’s front door… IN ALL WEATHER. RedBox requires a person to go out to their vending machines. Think about the elderly, with marginal eyesight, driving out to a RedBox. Amazon delivering right to a front door, is safer. By using Amazon, a person DOES NOT have to own transportation, buy gas, get a vehicle inspected, maintain car insurance, risk being in a road rage incident, etc… I gladly embrace Amazon for that.
Unfortunately, there are people out there like my Mom who HATE the Internet and refuse to watch any streaming service. My Mom enjoys owning tangible media she can see. She also enjoys her antiquated 4:3 aspect ratio CRT television. She says widescreen TV’s give her a headache. My Mom is very stubborn and set in her ways… she finds comfort in that. We know there are many more people like her out in the world. She is physically unable to leave her home, so I order new DVD’s for her… I just can’t tell her they are from Amazon. She misses the days where she could call SEARS and order from their catalog.
