  • Interpretations of Francisco Lórenz de Rada Atajo 1- 8, by Phil Swift
    Quick demonstrations of Atajo and wounding techniques.
    Transverse or Diagonal steps after the Atajo's towards the left aka 1-2 should be done like at 6:22, which is more forward from the angle created by the initial curved Atajo step, with the front foot pointing at the adversary/opponent (my sword was longer than my fiance's sword so I did not want to hit her, since she had no protective gear on.)
    Revision video for Atajo 2&3
    • La Verdadera Destreza ...
    Special thanks to Sebastien Romagnan.
    Rada's Nobility of the Sword... Book 2, p.41-42 (1705)
    Atajo is in the Art an impediment that is caused in the opponent’s Sword, with contact or without it. Atajo of greater potential is the one that deprives the opponent’s Sword of more. Atajo of lesser potential is the one that deprives the opponent’s sword of less.

    It is the first time I see putting the front food on the back in the medio proporcional.

      Hey Andre! yes, usually I prefer to do it closer to how Aleix does his, but this demonstration I wanted it to be closer to what was shown in Rada's text when he shows us the movement of the feet and arm position for all the Atajo. I've posted the pictures from the text on Destreza for the SCA group.

      @@philswiftHEMA I see, because the problem of advancing with left is offering more target on the body and losing activity on the sword, plus offering more degrees of weakness on your blade. I see it more plausible with dagger, but i cannot judge (far from it 😊),even if Aleix is my master I know fewer of Rada than other masters i studied more such as Ettenhart or de Brea. Thanks for the video.

      @@androris I def do not disagree with you. However it is hard to see unless I show you in person, as the wide angle camera makes it easier to spot openings but really my inside line is closed, and if they disengage I'm not in medio de procionado, so I should have time to react to the disengage. Rada may argue that the structure is strong being more squared(it would be harder to overpower my arm), but losing reach as a result.

      Hello! Part 1 was on Deviation or rather my own & Sebastien Romagnan's way of teaching lateral parries.

    Phil, thanks for this video. It helps a lot. On atajo one, why would you want to put your right foot behind only to have to take a transverse step for the wounding? Seems like wasted tempo to me.

      Yeah, it was shown like that in the book. However, if you watch the revision of Atajo 1-8 I would explain that Rada also shows us a more foot forward one as well. I could think of only one reason to explain why Rada would illustrate an image with the front foot behind, and that is because of having extra structure or strength in the bind.

    it would be cool if you could take some time to expound on this a little more. Show the motion from third person view, explain the parts of it and then explain it from first person or something like that. Good info, Iv'e never had someone explain these to me before.

    How does 8 end?

    • @philswiftHEMA
      @philswiftHEMA  5 лет назад

      That is the thing, 8 is the one that I understand the least. It ends like the freeze frame in the video. If you want a better reference look up Tim Rivera Viedma generals, and take a look at General Baja. I believe it ends like that with the false edge weak under the opponents sword. From there you may try a false edge cut to the wrist of the opponent. At this point I feel like no one is at a real advantage, but rather the Diestro maybe having a slighter advantage due to being at a better angle.
