I personally have mixed feelings about it as people are calling the character Miku, don't understand how the character works and sometimes taking away traits like completly forgetting she has an unfinished Miku cosplay and putting tbe ponytail in the middle.
I miss the ingenuity of Fanloids so much. To be able to push a voicebank so far and come out with a totally different sound is fascinating. I hope we see a resurgence along with fan made characters for other vocal synths.
I was part of the VocaloidOtaku forum before it shut down many years ago. Utauloids were the go to for people who couldn't afford or didn't want to pirate vocaloids. Everyone made their own or got people to voice theirs. Certain pitch shifts were always popular, like Neru. But the tide of UTAU won in the end lol. Even then, when Miku Append came out it was the go to for unique sounding Miku.
@@MiniEmber i think so… dude i love baito i think his name was i memorized every shion oh my god there was a akito and taito (i think? or it was baito and taito or nigaito and taito) fanchild CRAZY

Mesmerizer has allowed the underdog return of Neru, which I see as divine retribution. I still see Haku videos uploaded regularly. Overall, the good fanloids did get their time to shine, appearing in Project Diva and so forth. I like to say that Neru and Haku appearing in Project Diva is like the equivalent of someone's Sonic OC appearing as a guest character in a Sonic game. If Neru did get a voicebank, I guess that would make her an Utau if fans created it, but Teto graduated, so why not. The era of recolours died down. Vocaloid did not suffer the same fate as Sonic and Dragon Ball, but Vocaloid is a source of infinite creativity, so I would love to see someone put in some effort and create a new fanloid who gets recognised.
I feel like the fanloid recolor hate was also around the time people would pitch their forks, if you so made a mary sue of any kind. But also, very accepting of the fanloids? Idk if this is also just people getting used to them overtime. For me tho? I loved them. I love how there isnt any lore or criteria to make a fanloid. Just doing whatever the hell you want. Lmao
I guess some people didn’t seem to mind some of the Vocaloid recolors. But my guess is that some of those Fanloids have at least some characteristics to make them stand out a little. But from what I've seen others can sometimes get criticized if they just pass off as a “oc that’s a lazy recolor of a canon character”. But that’s just my small observation from being active online at the time
i wasn’t even in the vocaloid fandom until like 2017-8, and i still know a lot of fanloids, like the popular ones like neru and haku and zatsune, but my favorites are kasane keko and kawaiine kagami lol …… i know the shion family and hatsune Mika (green miku) and stuff like that its pretty cool that i joined late but still know a lot
A fanloid is just a vocaloid OC, nothing more. Most fanloids, like Haku and Neru, didn't even have voices until their popularity caused fans to interpret voices for them. Most really popular fanloids have a rich history of character establishment via 2chan, NicoNico, etc., they're not (always) just popular because they have an appealing character design. You should really check out the Nicopedia wiki article of any popular fanloid, they'll most likely have one.
Fanloids were pretty much created to make a crowd that would fill in the gaps of the limited vocaloid idol cast for NicoNico videos and look similar to Miku. Utauloids allowed people to crowd up their videos with more originality, but with more and more japanese vocaloid characters getting released, their existence became very redundant. Haku and Neru stayed mostly because of their origins as memetic characters from 2chan(Neru the anti-miku troll and Haku the depressed drunkard producer who tries to write iconic songs but fails miserably) Btw, Zatsune is one of the most popular, but wasn't the first. There were a few fanloids before her, one of them being Lulu, a gothic lolita fanloid voiced by Miku's bank that was featured on the very first Zatsune Miku video. Some formerly popular fanloids were featured in some notable projects like the lost song rpg, incuding two voiced by actual people. It's a pretty interesting deep dive in you look into it.
2:37 MINE LARU MENTIONED I like how you didn't completely disregard utau as being strictly more robotic or artificial than Vocaloid, as typically I have an easier time getting realistic results from utau than Vocaloid (Mine Laru being the one that made me feel that way, funnily enough.) Anyways, your channel is very underrated and I hope you get much more popular with this quality of video!
Yeah, kinda had to include him to purposely show how creative you can be with Utau with any design (along with the fact that I kinda like furry/scaly Fanloids lol) Also, thank you in advance
I’m def getting there lol I believe it’s partially because I don’t have much of a consistent upload schedule as I usually upload whenever I feel like it/have the time. Along with the fact that I’m still a little new to doing commentary stuff
i think part of fanloids becoming less common is that the larger vocaloid community suddenly seems REALLY insistent that there are rules and guidelines you _have_ to follow at all times. like "len and rin are always siblings" and "every character has to have a very specific type of vibe to their songs or it doesnt fit them" even though neither of those are canon or official statements. not saying we shouldnt have rules of course -- this mindset is probably one of the few things keeping the communitys collective past of Being Fucking Weird About The Anime Teen behind us -- but i really dont think its healthy in this state (that and the almost comical violence of cringe culture of course. 2016 was a mistake of a year i swear)
Honestly, I still kinda like Zatsune and Akaito. Yeah it's a pitch shift but the songs were in genres that weren't being used by the main Vocaloids at the time. This has since changed obviously, making the 'need' for fanloids kinda obsolete. Although I think my favourite was Miku Hagane, Miku but Metal, the joke of the name being Hagane means steel in japanese. It's literally just Metal Miku.
