I have helped on three deliveries of Excess 11’s. You identified two very important issues that do need rectifying 1) the helm seat backs are a potential hazard to life and additional stainless infrastructure needs installing behind them. 2) the davits are too low to hold a dinghy in anything other than benign conditions. We had force 4-6 westerlies going up Biscay and it was impossible to do anything but sit down or lie down. The boat does pound and shake in big seas and the ‘fuses’ on the main sheet boom attachment blow far too easily suggesting that the boom or the rigging might need beefing up. I found the mainsail to be super powerful and we literally flew along in force 4-5 broad reach with just the mainsail up. I think this is a good boat for long, summertime Mediterranean sailing holidays, in weather just like you experienced. Anything worse than that and you risk losing your outboard, dinghy or both. It seems to be a very popular boat and like you I thought the sailing position and characteristics were good with the best helming position being on the trampoline with (an orange juice 😳) in one hand and the Raymarine autopilot remote in the other 😀
Hi Tony, thanks for your review. You mention having problems in Force 4-6/11-27 kts - were the issues more related to the seas or the wind? Having problems with that wind seems like a big problem. Have been looking at this boat for the Med but wanted to clarify. Agree on the helm seats - seems that some more stainless could help. Thanks!
@@chrispeterson783 the boat handles the wind with ease and it performs well on a reach. All catamaran’s that I have been on are not that comfortable going into a challenging sea state and the Excess 11 is no different. Unlike monohulls that ride the waves, catamarans tend to bounce and skit around and this can make moving around the boat quite difficult. The issue with the Excess specifically (in my opinion anyway) is that the aesthetically pleasing low profile davits don’t really provide very much room between an attached dinghy and the surface of the sea. My friend was delivering a 14 last year and he had to take the dinghy engine off as the waves were hitting the shaft hard and causing a twisting moment on the whole dinghy. Don’t get me wrong, I think that these are great boats and really good value. I just think that I would take the dinghy off the davits if I was planning a passage in anything other than fairly benign conditions.
@@IgorStropnik Solar panels effect: around 0.2 means that when the panel above the dinghy is 4 x 2.5m , the area is 10 square metres, and 0.2 means 2KW max. A day of sunshine is up to 5 hours, so the panel adds 10 kWh per day. So you have enough for making dinner - all electric, no gas needed. I guess 40 KWH battery is needed for taking the boat in and out with electric motors. And a full week of sunshine while not getting used adds 50KWH, and may be enough to skip the diesel motor.
just found this channel randomly and it has very good content. thumbs up from Azores good work Igor! As a content suggestion, it will be very interesting to have a sail, quality and practically review of a BALI cat.
Re Owners bed - Semi walk around would of been nice - allows extra comfort getting in and out of it. Have had enough of crawling forwards/backwards in/out of a camper trailer - A cat is 100x the price of a camper trailer so I want a bit more comfort 😁 RE curtains - magnets/velcro.
newer solar panels accept UV rays from both sides. UV rays bounce off the water and the boat and bounce upward making it more efficient than one sided solar panels. You can use the dual sided panels if you park the dinghy directly underneath.
Greetings from America 👋 I really enjoyed this video & I agreed with your assessments of that model as well as the others. You have a keen eye for details & maybe you can design your own one day ⛵️☀️ The steering wheel is definitely too low, especially for you 🤭 I don't know much about Croatia, but her ocean looks lovely. That water is a beautiful blue 💙
I could not hear any squeaking interior, that’s the major negative with every lagoon I’ve been on. Does it squeak and the mic just wasn’t picking it up? My understanding is that these excess are lagoon hulls with the beneteau designers using aft helm instead of sport or fly which imo is better feel when sailing I felt more disconnected on the lagoon 42 and 440 that I’ve sailed on. The monohulls with twin aft helms are my favorite position for making sailing more exciting at less speed I agree with u on that 100%
Hi Igor, I would love to hear your comments on the Excess 14. This seems to be even an upgrade to the 11. What do you think? There is a 14 at the end of the delivery dock in Les Sables.
I like it. Very simple but works. Main complaint is the helm wheel is too low, terrible uncomfortable cockpit seat and not enough room in the cockpit to lay down and rest. And Davits hank the dink too low.
Awesome!!! Igor, I’m getting closer to my retirement dream to circa the world. I am seeing lots of Ex11 available for purchase in Southern California, do you still consider them as a value grab?? David
Fantastic review! It feels like the experience we would have being onboard ourselves. Not fluff, real info. Always this optimistic or is this cat the winner?
@@IgorStropnik So the Aventura 37 it is, from what I've been seeing, will stay posted. I think you could expand your social, you have a very simple authentic way which is actually rare in today's world. Thanks.
Hi. Nice video! I am the owner of the excess 11 #95, we are in Brazil. I am trying to find the best way to pass the air conditioner lines, specially the cool air exits. I saw on the vide the a/c commands and what looks like the air returns…but could not see no any cool air exits… can you give some insights about that. I thank you so much!
Hey Igor, really appreciate your reviews. I have a question for you completely unrelated. We want to rent a place for a month in June or July this summer in Croatia on/near the sea. Can you recommend towns/areas? We'd probably be flying into Split, but it's not certain, and we would have a car. We don't want a larger city, but still be close to good food/shops. Am wondering if you have some favorites.
@@IgorStropnik Indeed. I was wondering if the helms back there really make sense for a camper. There's a lot of marketing about feeling the sailing and suggesting sportiness. I had a look at one in person to consider buying however I'm worried that for a cruiser they are too exposed to the weather and sun. Maybe the charter market will enjoy it for 1 week suntan breaks ? But the price is low so I'm interested to know if you think it's worth that compromise for a live aboard. cheers great channel I hope you can skipper us in the med one day. There's no way that speed through water number is accurate. For a boat of this power to weight ratio on a beam wind it's absurd. Not the first time the water transducer is giving funny numbers and causing problems. Between Garmin, B&G, and Raymarine, in my experience B&G gives you the most accurate numbers.
I've seen the seat and it's flimsy & uncomfortable, covers for the seat/helm look totally silly & again flimsy. Basically sailors boat with no protection for adverse weather. Not a couples' comfort cruiser, but line of sight charter in the med or Caribbean I think. Wouldn't want to do the arc or Pacific arc in this boat.
If find yourself stalled upwind you're not left to the mercy of the wind. Just winch the boom to the opposite side of where you want to go and the breeze will make the boat bearing off. Guess you spared that old trick for your paying customers. 😄😉
Love this channel. What about the IC36 or Aventura 37? Can you do a review on those Im trying to decide between the excess 11 and those two Aventura 37 and independent catamaran IC36
Wouldn't buy a boat if igor doesnt give it atleast 5 thumbs up. Best real world reviews on you tube.
Thanks 🙏😀

Would you consider this helm position safe for a long crossing? Looks pretty exposed both from the front and to following seas…
I think it’s ok. But you need good clothes.
I very much question that emplacement as well. Very wet and doesn't look safe.
HH 44 that the Wynns bought is going to have all these aft outboard helm manufacturers copying.

The corners cut off bed is so you can make it. If you are not so tall it's very hard to make bed if no amount of walk around
I prefer bigger bed.
