- In today's video we take a look at all our Blue Neon African Cichlid Line Breeding Project!
We currently have 3 tanks with blue neon aulonocara stuartgranti's in them which are a 55, a 20 & a 5.5 gallon.
I have been line breeding this fish for some months now & have fry that are growing out. More than 30 to be exact! We take a look at all these fry, while also taking a look at a young future breeder male & my breeding group of blue neons in the 55 gallon aquarium.
We also take a sneaky look at my aulonocara Walteri who is an absolute stud!

Yea, the line-bred fish are more colorful than the fish found in the African lakes for the most part. The Germans & Czechs seem to be the most knowledgeable & skilled at line-breeding, producing the highest quality IMHO. They've been doing it longer than most & that experience probably has something to do with their success? I recently found out through select aquatics that genetic deformities can be completely eliminated through selective line-breeding & rigorous culling methods. He stated in one of his videos about a particular rare fish with a small & narrow genepool being cultivated successively in captivity since the 1930s. I didn't realize that was even possible without the addition of a wider band of genes being introduced? From what I gathered the key to successful line-breeding is knowledge, good record-keeping & persistent vigorous culling standards which most fish-keepers haven't the developed discipline or skill to do very well or responsibly.
J.L. Herington they certainly do seem to lead in the line breeding regard. For sure! I’ve been working with this strain for a few years now. I can definitely tell the males are coloring up a little earlier etc. for the most part it’s an experiment but there’s things to look for when it comes to deformity’s. Crooked mouths, irregular baring on the fish are the most noticeable defects. See that in stores or at local breeders & you know a fish has been too line-bred you know. Hey if you need help and want to strip the females to save the fry I could help ya out. I have 2 tumblers and a 10g holding tank.
Mike P I should be fine in terms of breeder boxes. A lot of the fry have survived already after being left into the 5:5 gallon tank! Update to follow!
