I used to watch this as a kid with my dad. The score, the lines, the ridiculousness, the mute guy... iconic

The reason they decided his character to be mute played by Cravat is due to the actor having a really thick Brooklyn accent lol

Watched this movie over and over in the 90s playing LEGO pirates as a kid, such a classic! Its like a prequel to Pirates of the Caribbean and ultimate pirate movie classic. RIP Burt Lancaster!

Burt Lancaster in his prime, all teeth and shoulders! A magnificent figure of a man who became a really great actor as he grew older.

I think it is his circus partner and friend that steals the show in this movie.

This is one of my favorite movies I watch during my childhood years. Later another similar movie was made with Gina Davis starring as a pirates daughter, but filmed in the same mode. Burt landcaster also starred in Vera Cruz

While Pirates of the Caribbean doesn't suck, it's certainly far from the best. Personally, I would call The Sea Hawk from 1940 the best pirate film of all time. Even so, The Crimson Pirate is easily among the best.

He really has a strong New York accent. He grew up on 106th Street in East Harlem. You can tell because he is not pronouncing his R's at the end of words. I like it.

The accent problem is why his circus partner and friend played a mute in both this movie and that medieval movie before it.

This is where “Star Wars” came from. It’s astonishing to think that this film dates from the early 50s: the pacing, the tone, the overall irreverence is so far beyond other swashbucklers. Errol Flynn’s got nothing on Burt. I’d love to see Old hungover try some of these stunts!

I loved this movie as a kid. I think the mute sidekick was named Piccolo. I tried years later to visit a real former pirate village on the Caribbean side of Nicaragua, in the autonomous region. It was a very bad idea. Gringoes were unwelcome. Arrived in the morning, left in a hurry before dark. Crazy place, so many ethnicities. Dangerous. Named after a famous pirate captain.

This is one of the earliest movies I remember from my childhood. My parents took this movie away from me. My understanding at the time was because they thought it encouraged homosexuality. TBH I really have no idea, I'll have to watch it again.

this is another lesson in how Lancaster's movie relationships differed from some of the other fun movies like this; you see it in I walk Alone and Flame and the Arrow. There comes a point where his character, charging headlong through life, meets up with a woman who in one scene makes his character think, perhaps for the first time in his life, instead of just pursuing his fun. In I Walk Alone there is a beautiful 10-20 second stretch of film where he goes from hard-faced anger through a split second of surprise when he realizes that the woman isn't just acting, to real sympathy. I don't care how many takes they needed to get that scene right, it's marvelous.

When I watched it for the first time, in the age of 13, I was excited - best movie ever! But when I watched it again three years later, I was rather disappointed - I found the movie just silly and boring. And I'm extremely fond of pirate and swashbuckling movies. But it is not an adventure film, more a slapstick comedy - perhaps I expected just the wrong kind of movie.
