Steve Reeves of Hercules fame) may have prompted distributors to aim for a limited screening of the film in the US and abroad. So the option for the more economical (b/w) print may have been the best choice. Conversely, just about any sword and sandal flick with Steve Reeves (in color) would have better chances for big box office receipts in the US. So in that case a color print would be justified.
