    When John Chu said he was embarrassed about smelling like Chinese food and bringing it to school, I started crying. When I was in elementary I really hated bringing food from home because it looked so different from everyone else’s. They had sandwiches and I had soup with beef bones and bok choi. I would leave my lunch at home and look for stray dollars and coins so I could buy lunch. These days, I’m proud to be who I am and I don’t mind displaying my culture, but I definitely feel sad that I was ever ashamed at all.

      A lot of people seem to have that experience. I kinda wish I did too. I came to the US to live with my mom. My mom married a white guy, and was trying her hardest to distance herself from anything Chinese. We rarely ate Chinese food at home. Pretty much never spoke Chinese (except during arguments). Didn't watch Chinese movies, celebrate Chinese holidays, or anything to do with Chinese culture. By default I was given bland ham sandwiches for school lunch.
      I'm embracing Chinese culture a lot more now that I'm not living with my mom anymore, but it's harder, because I feel like I've been severed from the tradition, and now I have to rediscover things on my own, not really having the familial foundation to return to.

      The added challenge of growing up in a culture, that your parents do not understand and are unable to help navigate, only forces you to spread your wings and soar. I hope that all who have had this experience are better-off despite its challenges and will support the next-generation that is navigating the crucible

      I'm Indian American and went to an almost all white elementary school. One day I brought briyani (chicken rice with Indian spices) and my friends were like, "Wow, gourmet!" Then I poured yogurt on it and they were like, "Gross, you ruined it." That was the last time I brought Indian food for lunch. Looking back, it's funny how impressionable we were as kids. Glad this movie is popularizing Asian culture, which is beautiful

    Being an Asian immigrant in America, I was very confused when my Asian American classmates in middle/high school didn't want to associate themselves with their culture, with people like me. It was really discouraging and sad when the only time the topic of 'asians' came up, it was always a joke, some form of mockery. I really hope this new 'movement' allow more Asian Americans to openly express their admirations for their family's culture

    • @thomaschung4711
      @thomaschung4711 6 лет назад

      its because the Asian Union (A.U.) has not formed and not accomplished the following: when 'asiatics' design and build jet fighter aircraft together (the E.U. for example has the Harrier vertical lift off jet, really old btw, the Eurofighter, the Typhoon, and the Tornado; throw in the A380/A350/A340/A330/A320/A310/A300, and the Concorde, also a very old design from the 70's; plus the Rosetta Comet Lander, launched 10yrs in advance to settle a comet). THAT is why your classmates didn't 'associate' with their culture. the place is still fucken backward. when the A.U. gets its act together it wont be a joke anymore.
      God Bless Eurasica. God Bless the Asian Union (A.U.) and God Bless the Eurasian Union (E.A.U.)

      Great to hear from your experience! I really think there needs to be greater cultural awareness about Asia and Americans in general (this is statistical) are not aware of anyone besides themselves.. Also, Asia is a huge myriad of cultures but Americans being Americans love to pigeonhole people because it is easier on their intellectual capacity (or lack thereof).
      Singaporean here btw!! Much love for Vietnam btw 🇻🇳

I’ve been reading everything about it, every article, watching every video related to it. Movie tickets here in Hong Kong are expensive in my opinion but I’d go watch it again so just to contribute to its success! I can’t wait for the sequel 😍🙌🏼✨✨✨✨

    It was such a great movie, the actors were amazing. Then I watch interviews and then I go back to the movie. It's a never ending cycle. Crazy Rich Asians is one of the most amazing movies of all time

    This interview was great, it was perfectly executed. It asked all the right questions and touched on the Asian experience of Asians being outside of Asia and what it is like, the struggles of identity, ethnicity, and not being good enough of either culture, not having role models that you can look up to that look like you and how polarizing that is when growing up. So groundbreaking for inclusion in Hollywood as leads and giving voices to the Asian experience in America and abroad.

    • @thomaschung4711
      @thomaschung4711 6 лет назад

      this is not inclusion thuy, its the same old trope hollywood reinforcing existing stereotypes that 'asiatics' can only be expressive in their own part of the world. it counts for nothing. alles nicht. NOTHING. what matters is Eurasica, the Eurasian Union (E.A.U.). God Bless Eurasica. fuck hollywood. same old stereotypical 'joy luck'/'geisha girl' whatever folksy/back in your own country crap.

      Moutton Noir Hi, ..There are 'groups,' 'Ethnicities,' clearly defined Categories, etc.. but I've never fully understood the word "race." There aren't any 'race' of dogs or plants (as retarded as that might sound).. Who coined the term anyway?.. What is it.. really? There's no such thing as 'race'.. only groups, ethnicity, categories, etc.. Haha.

    • @propagandamachine55
      @propagandamachine55 6 лет назад +4

      anthropologically, there's only ethnic clines and not sharp defined boundaries since people been "mixing" since people existed. it's only the racist Anglosphere hierarchies at play that stratifies groups and populations.

    Wow, this talk is pivotal. Definitely heartwarming to hear about how this film affected asian men, where the conversation is not normally in the spotlight. So touched since I have a brother and often think about how he is growing up with the lack of representation and social prowess in Hollywood. Thank you for this talk, and well researched questions.

    Normalizing people of different ethnic backgrounds to be leads in popular films is a great thing that this movie is doing! I never saw myself represented on the big screen and was never aware until now watching all these interviews! I'm under 20, half Chinese, and grew up not surrounded by a lot of asians and disconnected in a way. I feel like this movie has opened up a flood gate of a part of me that I get to explore for the first time and it has made me proud to be asian. Before I was trying to be a part of that "normalization" and I think that was good but I unintentionally pushed away more or so half of my cultural background to "fit in." It's amazing and I'm excited to see this conversation reach all ethnicities in the future. LOVE this movie! It's glamorous, funny, and devious!

There's no 'race' of dogs or plants (as dumb as that might sound).. Who coined the retarded term in the first pkace? And why are we still using such a vague word.. just my personal thought.

    Best interview I’ve seen w/ “CRA” cast (& I’ve watched many of them the past few days)! Very thought-provoking discussion on different aspects of being Asian. Interviewer was much more articulate than the BUILD interviewer, but her long hair was distracting (even to her). White background was also blinding to the viewer (take note, Google). But, loved the shot of the one Caucasian woman sitting in the audience surrounded by all Asians...for once, a White was the MINORITY! Lol!

    Great talk from both guys. I especially liked how Henry elaborated that Asia isn't just "East Asia". He is equally proud of his Southeast Asian heritage. What is a 'full' Asian anyway, a lot of Southeast Asians has a mix of little from here & there. Henry's looks isn't so foreign to me, save for the accent of course (which was specified in the novel).

    The Joy Luck Club is a complicated subject, because while I really enjoyed the movie as a work of art, the message in it was incredibly offensive and damaging. Throughout the movie, the Asian men are only depicted as abusive, selfish, and generally negative. All the women only were only happy when they were with a white partner. That is completely inaccurate and insulting to all the asian men and fathers out there who are strong, intelligent, modern, and cosmopolitan. Amy Tan is one of those typical Asian American women who go out of their way to bash and demean Asian men. It's a despicable display of the self loathing so many Asians feel in western society.

      That's wrong the lead character in the movie the lead male is charming kind and respectable so all the men are not abusive, that's completely wrong, the movie was nice and it was Charming but even as the Director has said in other interviews the city's didn't really look how they made them look in the movie they embellished everywhere they could so the two countries it was filmed in are not as beautiful as they made it up to be..... maybe they should have concentrated more on the reality of the countries....... as far as the scenes of 'wealth" are concerned

    Saw the movie opening weekend...honestly had mixed feelings about it. LOVED Henry Golding!!! 😍. Re the whole discussion about “being Asian enuf”...Hollywood used to hire Whites to portray Asian characters (look up Charlie Chan), so we’ve come a long way. But, I like what Henry said about how the ultimate goal is to cast actors of different ethnicities in ANY role & the acceptance of this. I am looking forward to seeing his next movie...and perhaps him as the new James Bond in the future...🤗

    Okay......., so, the movie 'Crazy Rich Asians' is completed, n it is an ENORMOUS!!! success with the Worldwide audience.
    ALL the actors AND actresses were EXCELLENT!! in their respective roles. 👏👏👏
    There was also GREAT!! humour oozed out seemingly NATURAL, relaxed, casual, in the Asian Way - NOT!! tensed, or in pretense, or CONDITIONED SPECIFICALLY TO PLEASE Western taste; humour standard; acceptance; etc.
    After the completion of this movie ALL these superb actors n actresses r expected to move on, spread out in their own way, n go on to forge ur own future, destiny, act in more movies; t.v. shows; n maybe start ur own businesses; etc. But, u hv ALL made urself VERY well-known now WORLDWIDE!! via the silver-screen, n u hv ALL left a VERY impressionable footprint on history; on our mind; in the movie AND t.v. industry (Asians CAN!! DO!!) n we, the public hope to see MORE of u, wherever u are.
    Congratulations! 👍👏👏👏👏

    Henry is so suave n charming, that Hollywood should write a Bond like character just for him, super spy with the suave British accent that he effortlessly makes sound so sexy for ladies everywhere. That he can charm the whole frekng world.particularly his real life ancestry,a culture fascinating n mysterious n raw. If Fleming is still around, he can easily craft another Bond like persona using Henry as template.

      proud? proud is when the 'asiatics' design and build jet fighter aircraft together (the E.U. for example has the Harrier vertical lift off jet, really old btw, the Eurofighter, the Typhoon, and the Tornado; throw in the A380/A350/A340/A330/A320/A310/A300, and the Concorde, also a very old design from the 70's; plus the Rosetta Comet Lander, launched 10yrs in advance to settle a comet - now THAT is proud.) btw, i am not proud. none.

      First time I went to Thailand 25 years ago I was shocked by all the advertising being half Thai models. But it’s what they deem more attractive ( and is )
      It is what they find attractive. Like Henry
      Hearing him trying to portend to be a victim and not Asian enough and out of place in the UK is so laughable.
      The guy is a pussy magnet and a nice guy.
      The UK and Singapore don’t operate the way America does with as much racism.
      This is all just a sales plot to give the movie legs to flog to the market. The liberal media laps it up.
      It amazes me how people confirm their me too moments. Age of the vocal victim

    I'll tell you why there are not more Asian or for that matters minority movies in Hollywood. The big studios are afraid to lose profits. Before it becomes a movie the question is will the mass go see it and be profitable? There will be some more base on this movie but in the long run it will still be marginal. Only when it is successful that the writer/producer/director of the said successful movie will maybe be able to follow up on another one.

    Slumdog Millionaire, Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Lust, Caution, The Last Emperor, Better Luck Tomorrow, The Joy Luck Club, The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman
    There are a lot of amazing Asian-centric films out there, people!!! And if you want more, NETFLIX is home to more Asian films than any other streaming services right now!

      I'm not a movie aficionado, but I took a cursory look at those movies you've listed. Some of those are foreign films, some of those are really old. Crazy Rich Asians is usually introduced as the first all-Asian movie since The Joy Luck Club, which was made 25 years ago. Of course, the important context here is Hollywood, which controls popular representation of culture, and which Asian actors depend on for employment. This movie opens the way for more movies like this to be made. Jon Chu himself has promised he will be able to make more if his movie is successful.

      I don't think anyone's counting that movie. No one was particularly happy with it, least of all Asian communities. It certainly didn't encourage anyone to make more Asian-centric movies. You are aware of what Crazy Rich Asians' success means, right? Jon Chu is depending on the movie's success to get sponsoring for more like it, and Hollywood goes wherever the money is.

    SAYURI - AKA Memoirs of a Geisha - the lead actress and another supporting actress were Chinese actresses playing Japanese Geisha - And it was a big issue. Ghost in the shell is based on a Japanese animation - the lead role was cast to a westerner. Again it was a big issue.
    But what we ignore is that all of the surrounding roles were a variety of brilliant actors - who were appropriately cast. Henry Golding is a representation of a leading man - tall and handsome. And Asia is not just Han Chinese faces... it is a mix of different faces. And I love an actor that is half Filipina and Japanese - and another actor that is half Chinese and Japanese... And why should we continue to discriminate against people for being half of something and not full of something?
    My children are half Japanese and half of my mixed race. So should they accept that they are less just because they are not full Japanese? So is it not better to evaluate a person on their abilities rather than seeing them as less just because they are not a full blooded something?
    My point is - There are many different kinds of Asian faces. And a half Filipina and half Chinese face is no less asian than a half westerner and Malaysian face. And these faces are no less asian than a full blooded Han Chinese person.
    But maybe I am wrong? Maybe only full blooded people are real asians? And only Han Chinese actors should be the lead actors in an all Asian film... because Han Chinese is the most well known Asian face? I say no... because that is discriminatory and giving into stereotypes. I see Henry Golding as Asian and a very good leading man. And for someone to say he doesn't represent the typical asian experience - I can say they are right - because he doesn't represent the Han Chinese perspective (the majority) - but at the same time they are wrong - because the Asian face is much more diverse. And if you cannot see that - then it says more about your mindset.

      The point is: why aren't these hapas considered "white enough" to you? The one blood drop rule and nobody of mixed heritage (Obama) can claim to be white is white supremacy as white supremacy does.
      Look up and the eugenics done to native populations all over the world by white supremacists.

    • @romlyn99
      @romlyn99 6 лет назад +1

      The discussion in the video was about a Half Asian person - not representing the Asian face - and I present an idea that there are many Asian faces - whether that person is half western or half Japanese Chinese or half Japanese Filipina or 1/4 European 3/4 Chinese... there are many Asian faces. And for a lead actor to be half English and half Malaysian - doesn't make him less Asian - he is just another representation of an Asian face.
      That is my point. But you turned my argument into something it is not about. The discussion in the video isn't about why white people don't see half European and half Asian people as white enough. But since you want to make that a part of your discussion - then I can only agree with you. Henry himself spoke of this - that he fought all his life against discrimination - In Asia he is not seen as being Asian enough and in London he is seen as not being white enough... He is not full accepted in either world.
      And I have done a lot of research on these matters too. "Rabbit Proof Fence" is a movie that talks about the mistreatment of Australian Aboriginals... and being an Australian I am sickened by that history. And in many ways I am ashamed to be a white Australian.
      Growing up in Australia - I went to University - 90% of my friends in University were Asian - I had many lunches and dinners at their homes and learnt how to use chopsticks and eat chicken feet, pig's stomach and ox testicles. And my first girlfriend at University was Hong Kong Chinese.
      After University I got a job working for a large company - and I had few friends from work - because many of them hated Asians. I left Australia and came to live in Asia - because I didn't want to live in a racist, small minded, backward thinking, environment. I came to live in Japan and my first girlfriend was half Japanese and half Tanzanian. She referred to herself as a bumble bee. At first I didn't understand what she meant - but then she explained - half black and half yellow. I never saw her as black - I saw her as Japanese - with darker skin and curly hair. Then she asked me if I like black women... Then it dawned on me, that all her life she was treated by Japanese, as being black and not Japanese. She was more exotic for being black.
      It didn't matter that she carried a Japanese passport, was born in Japan, spoke Japanese, had Japanese citizenship. It didn't matter that all her cousins, on her mother's side were Japanese, that she grew up with all the cultural traditions of Japan... In her past she was always treated as being black and not Japanese. But to me - I just saw her as Japanese - because she was culturally Japanese. And to answer her question - do I like black women. My answer to her was, yes. I do find black women attractive. And I find Asian women attractive... But it doesn't mean I love all Asian people and all black people... Because you do find good people and bad people - no matter what the race or culture is. I love people for who they are - so if you are a good person with empathy and compassion - then I will like you - no matter what you look like on the surface.
      Then she confessed to me that she didn't love me - we broke up and went our separate ways. A few years later I met another Japanese lady - got married and had two kids. Now I have two beautiful children - who are called "Half" by all the Japanese they meet. They also refer to themselves as "half".
      Now you suggest that someone like me - doesn't accept Obama as being - white enough - or Henry as being - white enough. Obama was the first African American president of the US - and for me to say - no - he was also white - more white than black - would be denying the importance of his African heritage. And some people say that he was not really the first black president - because he was half white. He was not black enough.
      And I would say that both attitudes are problematic. In my opinion - to go as far as to say - that I cannot accept Obama's whiteness - that he can never be white enough - is unenlightened. Because to say he is more of one and less of another denies the importance of both his heritages. He is not half - he is double - he is twice the person. He is African and White. And I think we benefit a great deal if we love both sides of him. To diminish either side, would mean losing out on the beauty of both sides of his being.
      The question is - can we stop cutting people down and reducing people into separate parts just based on race - and can we start building people up and seeing their fullness based on their rich cultural makeup?
      And I have watched the "Rabbit Proof Fence" movie... but I really need to read the book too and I have added it to my wish list on Amazon.
      And I do see your point - white people have discriminated against the indigenous people of the world. The Dutch in Indonesia - The British in China and India - The British and French in North America - The Spanish and Portuguese in Central and South America -The British in Australia - All of these European - white power structures - have committed terrible crimes against native people. And just from my birth and family history - I am linked to this discrimination/racism. But it doesn't mean I hold those racists ideas in my heart now, or in the way I live my life now.
      I have an adopted sister - she is my older sister - and she is an Australian Aboriginal. When we meet - I call her "Sis" and she calls me her "little bro". We embrace each other with love and compassion and acceptance. We embrace each other as family. And I have seen her go through all kinds of discrimination - just because she is aboriginal.
      So I agree with you on many things - but I don't appreciate you suggesting that my thinking is a part of white supremacy thinking. To see a half asian person as asian - is not me denying their whiteness. All I was trying to say - is to say a half asian person is not a true representation of an asian - is discriminatory - you are denying them of their asian heritage.
      I agree that a white supremacist would say - You can never be seen as white because you have one drop of blood that is not white. But that is not what I said. I am saying we need to see that the Asian face is a diverse thing - and I admire and love many Asian actors and signers and business people that have mixed heritage and see them as being a part of the richness of Asia. Now would a white supremacist write about loving and admiring Asian people? In no part of my thinking or writing have I suggested that half asians cannot be white. But I know that white racists do think this. My writing and thinking is - we can embrace a half asian person as being a part of the diverse beauty that Asia is.
      I grew up loving Bruce Lee - not because he was 1/4 European - not because he was 3/4 Chinese - but because his philosophy on martial arts and life was beautiful and enlightening. And never did I think he was not White enough or Asian enough... He was Bruce Lee - he was above all that - he was a genius and someone who could transcend all barriers. And it was through my love of Bruce Lee, that I wanted to know more about the world and specifically Asia.
      And you look at me - and say "white guy"... so let's attack him. Well the one drop of blood theory - I would fail that test too. Because in my family tree I have Irish, English, Dutch, Maori and Chinese. So I am a mongrel. And I don't refer to myself as white - I am a pink person... not white skinned - pink skinned.
      And the Irish - well they have faced enslavement, repression and discrimination by the English for centuries. The Cotton's were half Irish and face discrimination. My ancestors were escaping Europe and on their way the US - when they face terrible storms and their ship was damaged. They had make land and the closest place was Australia. And that is how my family came to settle in Australia - escaping persecution by the British. It is in my family history and is a part of my being - to fight against racism and discrimination wherever I find it. So I am interested in your ID "racist medias" - are you about pointing out racist in the media? and are you part of a larger organization? Or do you have another agenda? Because you commented on all of my comments - like you were highlighting me as an ignorant white supremacist. Or maybe you were trying to educate me that my comments came across as racists?

      having read all that, I have encountered arguments like that many times before and suffice to say: without you having a good study of sociology 101 and world history of colonialism, there's too little to start changing your post-colonial mindset:
      1. Irish was once discriminated as non-white: go read the history of Irish discrimination and then immediate assimilation, along with Italians. then compare with actual people of color in the racist Anglosphere and I DARE you to repeat that Irish face discrimination to this day.
      2. Anglosphere social engineering mind games to divide-and-conquer: accuse Asia Asians of racist against blacks in order to point fingers, when it's Anglosphere propaganda that started discrimination. And CONFLATING Asia Asians with Asian-AMERICANS as per the racist yellow peril history...
      3. go read up on reddit on how white supremacists just "love" Asian women (Frank Chin's "racist love") and note the continuation of post-colonialism. again, you show me your purchase of Duras' books and movies to say otherwise. most racists would definitely start "I'm not racist because my wife is Asian..."

    • @romlyn99
      @romlyn99 6 лет назад

      racist medias I agree with most of what you wrote and I have studied similar things. And I too am fighting against colonial and post colonial thinking. So you have no argument from me. I think we agree on more than we disagree... because everything you disagree with about the white colonial power structures - I also disagree. And I too understand how the Irish were sent as slaves to the US. And I have also studied about the opium wars and the empires.
      And I concede that I cannot really understand the Asian American experience - because I am not Asian and I am not American.
      I wish you all the best with your fight. Just understand I am not the person you need to fight with. All you see is a white guy and feel that you need to tell me all the bad things my race did. And I am not whitesplaing... I just shared my experiences having lived in Japan and Asia for 22 years. And my experience is different to the American experience.
      If possible please try to see past my white skin. And if you cannot, then I wish you all the best with your journey in life.
