DJI Mavic Pro / Point of Interest (Tutorial)

- *I MADE AN ERROR AT 0:56. I MEANT to say "record as your POINT OF INTEREST", NOT home point. Your home point needs to be set from where you take your drone off from. But the object you want your drone to revolve around should be recorded as your POINT OF INTEREST, as I say when the drone is actually above the water tower.
Point of Interest is an intelligent flight mode for DJI drones that makes it easy to fly your drone around a selected object (your point of interest). In this video, I show you how to do it and provide sample footage of my drone orbiting a water tower. Please be sure to watch in HD. Please be sure to like (thumbs up) this video, as it will help this channel grow. Please be sure to subscribe. Thanks.
I shot this video on January 28, 2017, at which point I didn't have a screen capturing device. I have since then made a v2 tutorial video right here: • DJI Mavic Pro / Point ...

Great video man this was super helpful! Thanks Dylan!
Hey Dylan,
Just want to say thanks for these awesome tutorials your great and it makes it so easy to understand. Thanks heaps and well done can't wait to see more. :)
Love your videos, Dylan. Thanks so much. My Mavic is coming in a few days. Can't wait to try all the things out.
Thanks for your tips, I’ve just discovered your channel and learning a lot. Keep it going, greetings from Spain
Thank so much Dylan, with you being up in OK. myself down here in Dallas I like the way you put things "ez on the ear" . you and a few others make this stuff EZ thanks for doing what you do. A fan...
thank you for the tutorials! such a big help. I don't have much time to practice due to work. so this helps a lot!
Great stuff Dylan! Thanks for the tips. Long time Mavis Pro owner but only recently getting to know the intelligent flight modes.
nice tutorial. one of my next golf course or Tesla videos will certainly use that feature (I had some problems getting the PoI right, but thanks to your tutorial it should work now)
Great video. Was trying (unsuccessfully) to figure this out. Didn't realize you had to fly directly above then pull out. Can't wait to try. Thanks!!,
Thanks for the video mate; learning loads
Great job! You make it so simple! Keep it up! Al from Dallas
thanks for your videos from England . Helping with my confidence .
Very helpful vid, thanks Dylan.
HELLO from McAlester, OK :) it’s good to see a fellow Okie making drone videos. I just picked up a DJI Mavic Pro, and I was looking on RUclips to see how to use the follow me function, and that’s when I came across your videos. I watched the one in the parking lot following your truck. Great info by the way. Keep up the good work.
PS. I Subscribed to your channel. I have to support my fellow Okie 😊
Dylan Young Thanks for the clarification in the video description. I was going to ask a question about that in the comments but then noticed the description. It scared me for a second when you said that in the video, because if you were in an area with poor visibility and you reset "home" to the thing you wanted to rotate around, you'd lose your original take-off/landing "home", and you'd have to take the risk of manually bringing the drone back for landing.
Hey Dylan really cool and helpful channel. You got another subscriber. Keep it up!
SeraniAgency Thank you for the kind words and for subscribing!
Good video Dylan.
Thanks Dylan. Great tut !
Trust is a must,,,,I am learning to trust mine not easy... Dylan, nice teachings, you make it real easy for me to follow your instructions.
I completely understand and hear you on that Jerry! My DJI Phantom (the 1st, original) did some really questionable things and I had a bad fly off one time with it. Ended up finding it a month later after a guy found it on his property. I had made several flyers and hung them around and he happened to see my flyer and had the number to call. Thank you for the kind words on the tutorial videos! I certainly try my best.
Jerry P I'm with you. I have only flown a few times now and I can't even fly long enough to drain a battery I'm so nervous. These are great tutorials. Hopefully with time we can trust it more.
I thought I was the only nervous one!
Jer
Yo Dylan, big "Szevasz" from Hungary :) Learnt a lot from your vids. I'm a fresh owner of a Mavic with a lot of reading and practice to go for me, and these videos help a lot. Keep up the good work (and do something about the screen capture thing ;)
Nice edits, you have done some good tutorials
Great explanation Dylan, thanks for that! I wish I could see better what you did on your phone, hopefully see it a next time. ;-)
Dylan...way to go my state buddy...keep up the great work sir
Awesome video. Thanks for the tip
Just bought this drone to search for list dogs. It's sick how awesome this thing is.
Nice feature and great instructional presentation but I really could not see anything on the controller screen, but your video was a lot of help. Thanks!
I'm amazed you know you state song! Great video.
Hahaha, yes sir! I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching!
Very, very good tutorial, congratulations.
Hey Dylan, great tutorials. I'm looking for more guidance for taking off from a moving boat (yacht) If yacht was moving constantly at 10kts. Anything you can discuss for safe launch and retrieve?
thanks for this info
Dude, you own this tutorial and you own that town!
Thanks Dylan!
Very interesting!
Dylan thank you very much for your fantastic video we will like to see more. from (Atlanta Georgia) Best regards
Thank you so much for the kind words, I am always glad to hear that my videos are helping people and that people are enjoying them! I was just in Atlanta last August!
Thank you Sir!
Amazing.
Perfect! Nice tutorial.
Jaco Burger Thanks for the kind words!
I like that thumb up !! Good job Dylan !! From Miami ,Florida.
I really appreciate it! Thanks for the kind words! I've never been to Florida.... someday though!
great area for aerial shooting ,i know we are pretty flat ,no mountains at all ( the only thing i miss living here) but a lot of action here, the weather ? 12 months of summer ,LOL !
Great video
Any tips on how to do repeat POI flights that will do the exact same flight over a location every time with same heights angle etc??
what is the price dji mac pro and which one is the best because I want to buy
Awesome feature!!
Man, it is! Very useful feature. I can see myself using this one a lot in productions as well!
The sun did ruin the view of the screen on your phone but you did a great job of explaining exactly what you were doing. The tutorial definitely helped me. Thank you
Yeah, this video was put out on January 28, 2017, at which point I didn't have a screen capturing device. I have since then made a v2 tutorial video right here: ruclips.net/video/QKd21ichvQc/видео.html
I am good on the point of interest until I try to set the orbit speed. I am using an iPad Mini-3. When I put my finger on the orbit speed slider and slide it to the right it does not respond. Anyone know what is happening?
Thank you (from France) Dylan for the video. Great info as always!
Thanks to kenneth byrd for the update.
You are very welcome! Wow! France! That is awesome! I appreciate you watching and glad the videos help!
Good clear demo. UK sub.
hi Dylan.. nice work on these epsd's ... easy to understand and apply...I have watched most of your series so far .. enjoyed them all...
as I study these .. I began to wonder...
can these intelligent flight programs be interlaced and sequential ?...
I.E. / could a person such as yourself.. program.. trace - into (POI) into profile.. into return etc....and if so.. how MANY programs could be interlaced into a flight program and stored at any given point?
understanding it would take a "dry -run, setup... could this be done in intelligent flight mode?
example: launch the drone , from inside the truck, have it trace you in the parking lot for a ful run, fly off to the watertower in POI, while keeping YOU in frame(understanding it would suck out on the 3/4 rotation of the POI, come back to "spotlight " you as it completes the POI rotation, profile you in the truck for a bit.. then go home and land... without you touching the controls ?
Really helpful
Mike Chan Glad to hear that! Thanks for checking it out!
Nice video, but I noticed at 4:49 the horizon is higher on the left than the right, do you recenter and calibrate your gimbal often?
Dylan I have a question. When you turn your mavic on and the camera Gimbal calibrates. You know when it looks up and down then up again and then it finalizes by looking straight.... Does it make a click noise? Mine looks up then does the click noise as it its the back when it looks down then it looks up and looks straight.. Is that normal for the Mavic?
Thanks for this. Is it possible to do a point of interest going from bottom to top? (Base of tower to top of tower)
does dji mavic pro needs data/wifi everytime you want to fly it?
Afteter set the POI mode, does it needs to press record button while circling?
Is it possibly to use POI on a moving target, around 5 miles/hour?
Vjyden63 Yes! What you would want to do is use Active Track, trace and have the drone orbit the object. Go watch my "Active Track" video and I explain all the active track options including exactly what you are looking for.
awesome video, I'm def gon try it out since i love circling around POIs, but due to the shadow I couldn't see much of the remote screen, maybe make another video where the steps are shown clearly
hotrides09 This video is really ole. Since this video, I’ve made 2-3 more POI videos using a screen recording app. They are on my channel. just search for “point of interest dylan young”. thanks!
Thanks again for another great tutorial. This seems a bit more complicated and it's too bad you can see your phone screen. I encourage you to make another one.
Already done. Look for it on my channel. POI part 2. Thanks. :)
at 6:26 in the video the sun is casting a propeller shadow... are you running any lens filters in this video?
love the teachings,,,, can i ask while in the POI mode and you have the camera pointing at your subject can you have you drone pointing on the outside of the radius thus having a pan of the surroundings??,
hope you get what i mean
weejock13 you sure can!
Dont you lose signal on the drone when the water tower is between the drone and the remote?
Hi Dylan, good tutorial from your channel. I am from the other side of the globe and have been going through lots of YT on Mavic Pro drone. Just wanted to know as much as possible before I purchase it. I am trying out cheaper Hubsan H502S first for now. Thanks for your good effort.
Rossi Yap Thanks for the kind words Rossi, I really appreciate it! You'll have to let me know what you think about the other drone! I'll be anxious to hear how it goes for you.
Great idea to start with Hubsan as your first! You'll be so much happier when you upgrade with the more expensive drone's! It's what I did.
Can you do this on a very low altitude? Because I want it to revolve on me, and I'd hate to see myself as a subject holding a remote
Just have it do multiplayer orbits and have a friend around. Set it up then toss the remote to someone so they can run out of shot.
What's up man I have a quick question. I heard I would need a certain cell phone plug to connect to the control I have a , S6 Edge plus does it already come with a plug for my cell?
Speedy2246 I have an iPhone 7 Plus and the cord that comes on the controller is for iPhone's. However it did come with two other cords that can replace the iPhone cable (I'm assuming they are for Android). I never looked at the other 2 cables, as the cable I needed was already on the controller. I'm sorry I'm not much more help for your question but I'm 75% sure one of the two extra cables will be what you need!
Dylan Young thanks again.
No need to apologize for the wind. It's been windy in Colorado for days-weeks.
Dylan, love your tutorials: new subject request: I am technologically challenged and so far have only been able to post four of my videos to You Tube following their instructions. How do you add music to a video for You Tube? Sorry for such a basic question but that is what 74 years does to one!
Many video's on RUclips to show you how to do this! You have a Mac computer? Software is what I'm getting at, that will allow you to do this. iMovie perhaps or Final Cut Pro or Premier Pro for options.
I can see your videos that's very nice
Thank you for the kind words!
Tried twice never could get it to work. Ive been doing it manually and gotten pretty good on the sticks. Thanks for the explanation.
tlsmoke23 I hate to hear that you are having trouble with it. It's really pretty simple. Something must be off somewhere. That's awesome that you are getting good and smooth with the sticks. Manual operation is always important!
Does this also work for DJI Spark?
Havent found that feature yet,
Also there are apps, that allow you to capture your phone display,
would be better that filming it in bad light
This video was made at a time when screen capturing apps weren't readily available for iPhone yet. I have 2-3 newer, updated POI videos out now.
Alright, thanks for the fast reply
When you're in one of these Intelligent Flying modes what happens if you move the control sticks? Does it cancel the mode or will it allow you to fine tune the flight?
Christopher Daniels think you can fine tune
It depends on what intelligent flight mode you are in. For instance in Point of Interest, you can move the gimbal/camera angle up and down. I still need to try changing altitude while it is orbiting the subject. I will let you know what happens next time I try that.
Dylan Young I think I saw a tutorial that said you can change altitude too. got to wait till 2nd of March for my Mavic
Thanks for this video. It is really great! Is it possible to change the altitude or the distance while the mavic is flying around the POI?
M. G. Thanks for the kind words! I'm 90% sure you can change both radius distance and altitude while it's orbiting the subject, but next time I am out, I'll test that and let you know!
Thank you. Did you test it already?
Very well explained and presented video but the lack of being able to actually see the key information (ie the screen) was a huge negative. Seeing the controls is kind of the point of watching this video. Maybe over lay a re-record of the controller?
Thank you for the kind words. This is a very old video. I have since done a lot of POI tutorials where I use a screen recording app and you can see the video perfectly fine.
The important thing is not shown in the display
Awesome clip Dylan. Can the point of interest be a moving person and the magic just revolves around you?
Thanks for the kind words, and it certainly CAN. However the difference is, it's no longer "Point of Interest" anymore to set up what you are wanting to do. You need to check out my tutorial video titled "active track" and there is a mode where you can have it orbit a moving subject!
Hey its really cool but I couldn't see what buttons you were pressing on your screen. :( Help.
Hey Lindsay, I put up a Point of Interest Part 2 video, It's linked at the end of this. You can see all the controls, etc. Thank you!
Looks like it's not just my Mavic that suffers from yaw error on a PoI. The water tower gradually drifts to the left of the frame, then comes back again as the circuit completes. If you do a 300ft radius circuit with the camera pointing down at around 40 degrees, the point of interest often disappears out of frame completely, like this: ruclips.net/video/Azugsa5k1t4/видео.html. Not sure if they've fixed it in the Mavic 2.
I wonder if this is an issue with the phantom 4 pro?
Dylan..as you know..I'm one of your biggest fans..;-) Its CheriG here.. (Just wanted you to know..I was born an Okie too...OKC to be exact..) Hey..any video instructions on how to edit my videos from the Mavic? What program do you use..and any tips on the best way to learn how to edit?
Your videos are great bro. However, you need a screen recording method that would make the screen visible.Try Airshou. Full screen recording that will bring your videos to next level. This is critical for newbies who NEED the visual on the screen - not a reflection. lol
Joseph Volpe Thank you very much for the kind words! Believe me, I know I need a screen recording device but unfortunately, iOS doesn't have anything like that as of now that I'm aware of.
I hear the Nvidia system does this.
Excellent tutorial but is it possible for you if you can shoot the mobile video again so that we can learn that how to set point of interest on mobile because in this video also you have said that the view of mobile phone wasn’t visible :(
Otherwise it’s a great video 👍🏻
I have subscribed to your channel just because you use very simple and straight forward language for beginners like myself 👍🏻
Yeah, this video was put out on January 28, 2017, at which point I didn't have a screen capturing device. I have since then made a v2 tutorial video right here: ruclips.net/video/QKd21ichvQc/видео.html
Cool vids bro thanks for the info
But why don't you use screen recorder ?

i cant see any thing
Dylan it is "your" town ,is where you live and breath ,belong to you and everyone living there .
You have a good point!
no se ve un carajo la pantalla
did anyone else notice, the cop car came back, and parked in the driveway, across the street,,,
Please redo this video so that the screen is visible.
You could give the screen record
MNA Bhuiyan This is a very old video. I have since then, done tons of tutorials with screen record.
Unfortunately cant see your screen.
Pilot This is an extremely old video. Since this video was made, I’ve created 3 or more POI videos with screen captures. Good luck!
If I could see your screen, I'd give your video a huge thumbs up. But I couldn't see anything, so I had to go elsewhere. I like your narration though, but I needed to be able to see the screen.

Helpful to a certain degree could not see anything onscreen . Have to go to another u tuber
steve foster This was made over 2 years ago before screen capturing devices were available for iOS. Since then, I have at least 3 newer POI videos on my channel with a recorded screen.
You sound like Kenny Powers/Danny McBride lol
Can't see the phone screen so don't get the full idea :(

Dylan Young thanks will check it
you need to use a screen recorder when making videos like this..
If I had a nickel for every time someone said that... lol. I have a screen recorder now, and actually did another P.O.I. video. You can check it out here... ruclips.net/video/QKd21ichvQc/видео.html
Dylan Young i was in the same boat my friend lol..... keep up the great work subscribed.
We cannot see anything in your screen man. :-/

@usmc
get a screen recorder and overlay the shot in the vid :)
koolkiwikat Haha, man! If I had a nickel for every time I've said this... I can't because I have an iPhone 7 Plus... no apps for that iOS-wise.
Is there software that you can do this with an iPad? I know you can do it with Nvidia K1. How do you do it?
Yeah, this video was put out on January 28, 2017, at which point I didn't have a screen capturing device. I have since then made a v2 tutorial video right here: ruclips.net/video/QKd21ichvQc/видео.html
I cant see shit record your screen next time (lol)
Next time record your mobile screen..
This video was made BEFORE iOS released the capability to record your mobile screen. I have since this video, probably made over 100 tutorials using the screen capture with iOS. Just have to check out the published date sometimes! Ha. Thanks for watching!
