Sandra Bullock was born in Germany. Her mother was german so she can speak german fluently. In fact she went to a german school the first years of her life. So she knew exactly what she said.
She thanked her mother for preaching her her whole life to always be original. And she was amazed that a person like her is able to be on this stage and to get an award. She told that she was a waitress, a hairdresser for dogs and so on and that all these jobs took her to where she's now.

Actually her German is not perfect. Every native speaking German person can hear that it is not her first language. Still pretty good.
I am German/American myself btw but in my case, German is the 1st language. Americans have a hard time figuring out where I'm from.
Funny story: I freaked out some German tourists in NY a few yrs back. They needed directions and I replied in perfect German which was a total shock to them (my dad is black so it was even more of a surprise to them) ...

Americans get criticized so much for not speaking other languages and when one does, the accent is totally picked apart. Granted, Sandra Bullock has more experience than just learning German; however, the comments here would make one scared to try to speak another language. I studied German for many years. My experiences in Germany and Austria were that the people were very complimentary and helpful with speaking German. If I said something that got the message across but I know had mistakes, they would still tell me how good my German was. It's a shame those aren't the majority of people who comment on here. I guess in every country, it is mostly the nasty trolls who comment. Thanks to the Germans who did defend her language. I would love to be able to speak German "that badly."

Translation: Thanks. Thanks. Man! I am nervous, because my speech lies on the floor over there (actually she said "Sprache" which translates to "language", which makes no sense in this context, but I guess she meant a piece of paper with her "speech" = "Rede"). Okay. What great times we live in! At some point in the past I was a waitress, then I was a housecleaner, then I was a disco dancer, then I was a hairdresser for dogs. Who could ever guess, that all these jobs would lead me to this stage? - applause by the audience- But that is the best proof for this: Today's audience is that tolerant, even people like me get a chance. My mother always told me: "Be original, Sandra!" and that drove me crazy as a child, but now I understand: My mother was ahead of her time. Phew! And thank God she taught me that mentality, before she passed away to other worlds. So thank you Doctor Burda (founder of the award), thank you to my family, thank you Carolina, thank you Christina, Gabriela, Barbara, Maxi - go to bed now! Aunt Christel, uncle Heinz, thank you! Thank you all.

"Oh, I am nervous, my notes / my speech lies over there" makes perfect sense to me in that context. So it is most likely, that she messed up just the one word.

Most U.S Americans can speak American (dialect), but many cannot read or speak English.
Relying upon the Carnegie institute changes (phoneticisation) of the language to accommodate language learning for America's early Francophiles, Spanish, and Indigenous et. al meant / means that many U.S. Americans do not understand rules pertaining to vowel shifts.
That is why absolute native English speakers can read books in Français irrespective of whether they speak the language.

Amazing she is really fluent. Both her Grammar and her pronounciation are almost perfect, with a nice mixture of bavarian and american accent. She only made one obvious mistake at the beginning of her speech. She translated the word speech into the closest related german word "Sprache". To make it more tricky the verbs "sprechen" and "reden" are synonyms and both mean "to talk" or "to speak" but the nouns have different meanings. "Sprache" means "language" or in an other context the abiity to speak and "Rede" means "speech". I think in this case "Sprache" is a false friend and it is quite easy for a non native speaker to make that kinde of mistake. Who cares, I would be more than happy if my English was that good.
