Great video, thanks! Helped me diagnose and fix my mower's gunked up carburettor. Your website seems to be defunct - assume you knew but just in case you didn't!

Hi ya mate. I appreciated your tutorial video so much that the least I can do is give yourself and any future viewers an update..? I take my hat off to ya mate...🙌👏. I got straight home from work today and followed each step of this video again to strip, clean and rebuild the carburetor. I wouldn't have achieved this without your help. The job was a complete success in just one attempt. Everything you said and did in this video is absolutely spot on. There was lots of gunk in the carb and even some rusty water in the bowl. Cleaned and scrubbed everything,...removed the jets and unblocked the clogged holes etc. Bolted everything back onto the mower,......kept pumping the primer bulb until I saw petrol squirt out in the carb,......and on the 2nd pull it fired up and purred like a kitten again...!! Unbelievable. I'm really chuffed mate. I mowed the back lawn as a tester to make sure I'd got everything right. It hasn't run this smooth since the day I bought it from new. Brilliant, informative video. Really grateful for your insight and expertise. Got my lawnmower up and running for £0.00!! Carburettor was full of rust and all blocked up, cleaned up and good as new now!
Thanks for this video! I followed this and stripped my RS100 yesterday that had been outside for a while, cover had blown off, old fuel and wouldn't start at all - dead! Fuel was getting to the carb but after stripping the carb jet was blocked so i gave it a full service and it started straight away thanks!
Thanks Mower Man, just watched this video and managed to HP414 back up and running. The stainless bush on air filter housing even fell out exactly as it did during the video. My issues were mouse related, little darling had chewed the hose from the primer bulb. Managed to replace it with a pipe I had left over from a strimmer repair. Eventually I managed to fire it up but it wouldn't tick over and kept conking out..? I re fueled it with fresh premium petrol,...cleaned the spark plug and tested for a spark. All good. But it didn't fix the problem. I checked the fuel was reaching the carb, and I checked the primer bulb was working. All good. But it still didn't fix the problem. My mate said it sounded like it was something to do with the carb..? Thanks for all the information. Lots of us seem to have similar problems with this engine. I do think that modern fuels don’t help as we don’t know exactly what gets added to them, and they are biased towards fuel injection and not humble carburettors. You’ve saved me a lot of work, thanks.

Have an EP414 (RS100) and used your guide to take apart the carb on a machine which had been working 5 minutes earlier but had decided it had had enough. Few minutes of swearing and spraying later and it was up and running again. Cheers!
I've got an RS100 which after winter it has all of a sudden decided to stop starting, when it was a first start mower before Christmas! Thank you. Just getting mine ready for this year and it wouldn't start. I cleaned the spark plug put it back together and after a few splutters off it went. I looked at a few videos but yours is most definitely the best.
Thanks for the video.. Just picked up one of these but with the self propelled option. Previous owner said it would sometimes cut out and erratic idle. Will do the carb maint and hopefully it will fix it.. Also, when I tipped it on its side to quickly check the blade, some fuel seemed to run out from where the carb is, will check that out also.
💯% for your step by step instructions video on servicing a mountfield RS100 mower.. now feel confident in doing a carburettor clean myself.. this is definitely gonna save me a few quid! 👍👌
Thanks, fixed my old Mountfield mower with this video. Be sure to check/WD40 the linkages and springs that connect to the carb - this was a slight issue on mine too.
I've got the same RS100 that I've had from new for about 7 years - it started hunting quite badly yesterday, so found this vid on servicing the carb. Did it today as per this video and it's like a brand new mower! I think it might even sound louder than it ever has done! Dead easy job to do, too.
Thank you for a straight talking, easy to follow tutorial. That’s my Mountfield RS100 HP414 serviced and running like a dream. The spark plug needed a good clean with a wire brush and came up like new. Thanks for your help. 👍🏻
Hi great video. I had the hunting problem last year, cleaned carb and put back three times but still bad. Eventually I found another black plastic jet, i think, on the top by the plastic throttle control, cleaned it and cured it. Might have been coincidence but just started it today and still ok.
Thank you mate, was just about to replace my mower, watched this video serviced the carb how you said and £10.00 later on carb cleaner and a fine cleaning kit and all sorted, well happy, thank you so much..
Thanks have a Stiga rs100 which was running for 5 minutes , hunting then cut out. Did the carb cleanup as shown and still hunting found out I had replaced in line filter with home brew motor Bike filter which I had pinched too tight with hose clamp and flow rate was real low . turned out it just ran for the full bowl then cut out , then of course bowl would fill again and run for another 5 minutes. Drove me nuts but your tips lead me to the fuel issue. Martin
Great video's and tutorials on mower repairs that have given me confidence to repair my mowers and others too. Concerning the Mountfield RS100 and similar types, have you got any video's on drive belt replacement?
I inherited one of these from an artificial grass convert. It had a split fuel hose and has worked first pull ever since. Until I ran it on the bottle of petrol that lives on the bench for cleaning sticky marks. It was hunting which is why I’m here. Have tightened the carb screw to get it revving until the clean fuel finds it way round. How does the right angle part at 26:00 govern the running?
Great video one small issue you missed off the push in breather jet. You have to remove the idle screw adjustment to get it out. If this jet is block it can cause surging!
Great video, I've just been given one of these mountfield rs 100 it supposed to run, I will be giving it it's first run out in the next couple of days but if it doesn't I can revert back to this brilliant video. 👏👍👍
Awsome video iv just picked up the same mower for free yesterday had have the same issue no fuel coming through so I assume a good clean of the carb and she will fire up hopefully I know it fire up as iv put petrol down the spark plug and it fired up thay way
Great Video. i have same Mower got it for £15.00 from car boot sale in Feb. Came with a spare carb as well the only problem i have it runs uneven, hunts and surges. I suspect carb needs a good clean the jet screw in the spare carb will not budge either, obviously previous owner just swapped carbs then left it full of old fuel over the winter again also looks like the air filter has seen better days.
Great video thank you, precise, clear and very helpful. It inspired me to do my own first full service on my spare HP414 which was not starting, and now goes a treat so a big thank you to you. Always better and cheaper if you can do it yourself and for others. Have subscribed (and yes the joke did make me and my mates laugh!)
what in fact is holding the carb on is the fuel pipe from the tank, squeeze the clip on the carb end and ease it off. You can then ease the carb off the studs and flick the thin spring off and then the rod. Top tip, be careful with the pipe as they do go hard and will break ease it off with a flat bladed screwdriver.
Precisely. I serviced my Sp414 this weekend. Just disconnecting the pipe on the right of the carb. will ease removal of it. The collar that fell off is to locate the inlet gasket properly. The collar floats and goes on the carb first, not in the plastic cover.
Video came just at the right Time, Bought the same Mower Today the Self Propelled Model, Seller Bought New last Year, said He Paid £160 for it at B&Q............Petrol Pipe has split, so hopefully an easy Repair .
Thanks, was given the self propelled version of this - same non starting issue which I diagnosed down to fuel in pretty much the same way (quite pleased with myself having now watched this 😂) - took carb apart logically - seemed very simple compared to the Briggs ones I have seen - all cleaned up and starts on the primer but won’t run 😢 have had the jet out and cleaned it again and again but can’t figure out why fuel isn’t being drawn up when running 🤔
@@andylees8735 not yet, it's on my list of jobs to do! I inadvertently ordered the same style carb but with a choke butterfly which wasn't obvious in the photos - oops - the casting seems to be identical as do the jets etc, but there appears to be an extra screw for adjusting something (high speed mix maybe?) which is blocked off on the old one. I was going to try to mix and match the jets, seals etc and move them over to the original to see if that worked, then worst case try to use the new one as it is...fortunately I was then offered another mower to get the jungle under control, again with a carb issue 🤦♂ which I managed to get going by jamming the throttle open with a stick once I'd cleaned it 😁
@@Umski Out of sheer frustration, I've taken the fuel filter off and redlined it best I could for a few minutes and now it will run independent. I think I have a similar carb to you in that it has some extra bits on it compared to the original. I've left everything as it was, although if that is a mix screw I might have a tinker with it. Mine seems fine now its warm and I think the fuel filter might not have been helping. I'll have to get a new one. Thanks for responding. The stick comment gave me a laugh. All approaches are valid if they work!! 😃
@@andylees8735 nice one 👍 thanks for the tip, I might try that too - could be that the fuel filter is restricting flow to the float bowl 🤔 I kind of assumed it was okay as the bowl was always full on disassembly but it could be just trickling I guess so on throttle it conks out…
@@andylees8735 so after your tip, I tried the old carb with the new black insert (my old one had a failed o-ring) - still no joy, so swapped out the main jet too and tried again. I realised it was just conking out due to the governor closing the throttle so I tried jamming it open which seemed to do the trick - I adjusted the idle screw where it's now running a fastish speed which prevents it spluttering out - it seems to run fine otherwise albeit sounds a little lethargic if it's loaded - I don't think it was the jet after all but didn't want to take it all apart to check again! So I've left it as is and did a few jobs - such a joy to use compared to the old heavy steel decked 18" one I had and even the other steely! That said it seems to clog up more easily on longer stuff and the grass collector is a little on the small side for me! Then just to annoy me I filled it up this morning and it started leaking under the fuel tank 🤦♂ - I found the filter as a result though - just need some new fuel pipe now!
Hi. I followed your video and cleaned the carb out along with checking fuel line. spark plug and fully emptying petrol tank. I'd got some oil mixed in with the petrol previously and it wouldn't start. Now it is starting but only runs very briefly before cutting out again. Could there be another blockage elsewhere?
Great video Mower Man. I have a Mountfield 414, stripped it and cleaned it with carb spray, put it all back together again, and it is still surging and hunting. Am I missing something? Checked the spark plug with multimeter, all fine, plus checked the ignition coil with multimeter, all fine there too. Bulb was pressing fine, no leaks and whilst stripping the carb down I could see the petrol seeping out when bulb was pressed. Any other suggestions?
The emulsion tube in carb throat pushes out with screwdriver once main jet removed if stubborn. Up top the plastic bit is idle jet , remove idle screw , n pry out , it has a tiny o-ring which carb spray can damage in same way as bowl seal. Heating them with hair dryer will shrink them
Hi there. Thanks for your great video! I've just got myself a secondhand HP414 which I was told was misfiring. It's missing the air filter and cover. I went to try to start it today and it caught fire at the hole where you can see the primer pumping fuel. What could be the cause of this? Some kind of seal or too much fuel in that hole? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Hi, I have noticed a hole on top of the fuel primer bulb. Should it have one? Just wanted to check before I start cleaning the carb. The spark plug is sparking but no fuel appears to be getting to it. Thanks.
Hi, Great video! I've just serviced my carburettor following your very easy steps. My mountfield rs100 still doesn't sound right though. I've got a video of it, is there anyway I can send it you and see if you know what's wrong with it? Many thanks for the video again, absolutely brilliant 👍🏻
I have that model, you can get the sparkplug cap off without removing the top, it's probably easier while not holding a camera. its the fuel line stopping you get the carb off the studs.
Awesome video. Would you have any idea what would cause the revs to fluctuate? Then when I go to cut it conks out. New fuel line, cleaned the carb, am stuck as to why it does this. Help appreciated buddy 👊🙏🏻
Ive got.the same mower hardly used from new. Starts runs sound but if the grass. 3/3 inches tall it stalls easily. It's jet washed.off and clean as new. Underneath. Can you adjust the feature whichever stlalls it ?
Just bought this mower it's lightweight runs well and starts OK but when mowing and the grass colecter gets a 3rd full it hunts struggles and cons out when empty grass it's runs OK again just had full service had a more powerful 1 before this and could fill grass box no problem?
This was the most informative video like this ive ever seen .. well done and thank you :) I had same issue , did everthing you did and it worked like a dream for most of my garden .. but now it revs up and down and up and down , any ideas what thos could be ?
great help thanks. just a suggestion...if you're going down the wrong route eg on the linkages maybe don't wait til the end of that bit before you say don't do this (on the edit)
Really clear video. Thank you. My mower works fine but is ‘hunting and sort of surging’. Have checked spark plug, cleaned air filter, changed petrol. Do I need to clean the carb? If so And what can I use instead of forceps please?

I have this mower, an RS100 engine Mountfield HP41 and it fires and runs stutters and dies, tried cleaning the carb as shown and it works better runs for a little longer, but still dies. Hi great video. I had the hunting problem last year, cleaned carb and put back three times but still bad. Eventually I found another black plastic jet, i think, on the top by the plastic throttle control, cleaned it and cured it. Might have been coincidence but just started it today and still ok.
Same here. The black plastic plug is the low speed jet. I had to take that out and clean it to cure the hunting on my machine.
I have a 414 mountfield lawnmower too since 2011 and still running with super unleaded from shell
Great video I have the same lawnmower which has a damaged fuel line. Thanks for posting.
Thank you mate, was just about to replace my mower, watched this video serviced the carb how you said and £10.00 later on carb cleaner and a fine cleaning kit and all sorted, well happy, thank you so much..
Damian gilbert Brilliant Damian!
👍 We just followed your vid and fixed pur mower. Thank you so much.
Martin
I can not thank you enough,This video is way up there with the best, infact I personaly think it is the BEST. THANKS FROM Ken.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks a lot for this video, my mower is now running sweet as a nut -THANKS
Thanks for this tutorial I fixed my mower xxx
Awesome
Great video, I was having problems how to unhook the springs not wanting to break them. them, worked a treat. Thanks Mower Man
Glad to be of assistance!
Great video's and tutorials on mower repairs that have given me confidence to repair my mowers and others too. Concerning the Mountfield RS100 and similar types, have you got any video's on drive belt replacement?
Brilliant. Mower works again now. Thank you very much. Very helpful
Top video, well made, you're a natural presenter.
Great video, I've just been given one of these mountfield rs 100 it supposed to run, I will be giving it it's first run out in the next couple of days but if it doesn't I can revert back to this brilliant video. 👏👍👍
Thanks Jonathan
Awsome video iv just picked up the same mower for free yesterday had have the same issue no fuel coming through so I assume a good clean of the carb and she will fire up hopefully I know it fire up as iv put petrol down the spark plug and it fired up thay way
Great video, my RS 100 was running rough took some of your tips on board . Runs smashing now .
Great to hear!
Brilliant video really well explained. My mower is now sorted.👍Thanks.
Awesome!
A Driver, mine was running rough. I’ve just replaced the throttle spring as it has stretched over winter, all sorted.
Brilliant video!! Really, really useful. Many thanks.
what in fact is holding the carb on is the fuel pipe from the tank, squeeze the clip on the carb end and ease it off.
Pigeon World Forum Excellent should be a nice easy fix!
@@MowerMan I hope so Paul, lets hope there`s no hidden problems I don`t know about yet eh..........
Hey can you help me,i jave a same mower how do i change the oil?
ruclips.net/video/IjEugxBCLqE/видео.htmlsi=S8L5E8bPd4Os7KZs
@@MowerMan thanks but i wanted to know where is the screw on the engine for oil.i preffer that way when the oil leaks fron that hole
That's all very well and good... but how does one refit the drive belt which goes from the transmission box to the cutting blade?
Great video. I have a mountfield with RV100 engine. Fitted a new carb but it will only restart by using the primer bulb, even when warm??????
You are very thorough Paul, love your videos. Thanks.
ken davies I try to cover most things people might get stuck with Ken. Cheers
I've got the same problem. Did you manage to sort it? I even put a new carb on as the old one was horrendous, but it's still the same.
Lovely job. Great video. 👍
Any other suggestions?
what a guy - great channel and website
nick hayden Thanks Nick!
Thanks.
Hi,
Great video!
Great video. Even better if you watch with the auto-captions on and it describes how you'll be showing us how to repair llamas for profit...
This was the most informative video like this ive ever seen .. well done and thank you :)
I had same issue , did everthing you did and it worked like a dream for most of my garden .. but now it revs up and down and up and down , any ideas what thos could be ?
blocked jets , clean it again!
or crap petrol!
The fuel filter in the end of the pipe is a good thing to check.
It looks similar to the sovereign I bought that got stuck.. I changed the spark plug and it's still stuck ...great video
Had to bin my sovereign. It lasted 1 Yr. My rs100 mountfield has lasted 3yrs
great help thanks. just a suggestion...if you're going down the wrong route eg on the linkages maybe don't wait til the end of that bit before you say don't do this (on the edit)
Awesome Video, Really Helped me Out - Thanks!
Excellentg RABZ
Really clear video. Thank you. My mower works fine but is ‘hunting and sort of surging’. Have checked spark plug, cleaned air filter, changed petrol. Do I need to clean the carb? If so And what can I use instead of forceps please?
Margaret Denning Yes you need to service the carburettor. If it has a diaphragm and gasket it will need changing! What lawnmower is it?
It’s the mountfield RS100 HP414. Which was why I watched your amazingly clear video.
Forceps advice ?
I have this mower but i look after it and i think its a great little mower
Thanks Jamcone
Hi do you know were you can get the 2 metal sleeves were the air filter box is
Hi, I have one too and what I don't know is where the thin cable goes to in the handle please ????
Very helpful video pal
Thankyou very much 👍
Fantastic video! The pantomime part made me chuckle! That earns you my sub. I have this mower, an RS100 engine Mountfield HP41 and it fires and runs stutters and dies, tried cleaning the carb as shown and it works better runs for a little longer, but still dies. Just wondering if you could suggest what else to do? Did I not clean something properly? Thanks again for a Fantastic video!
Pull the fuel pipe off where it meets the tank and see if theres a filter inside the fuel line. Remove it if there is.
If you back off the idle screw you can turn the throttle butterfly more and the rod pops right out
