I actually made one of these on my channel a while back, and I've been trying to compact it like yours for a long time. It's definitely hard with limited space.
Your setup has a lot of constriction and resistance to air flow, which favours static pressure over air volume. This tends to mean impellers are better than propellers. It might make it a bit less noisy.
do not use impeller use a centrifugal blower, the same ones used to cool laptops. i think this is what you mean and they would work a lot better and be more compact
The server fan I ended up using was rated fairly high on static pressure. The trick with this build was that too much air caused an issue. I required just the right amount of flow down the blades. Too little and it didn’t travel. Too much, and it blew the arc out light a candle.
If you want to eliminate the spark getting "stuck" at the top, try removing the sharp points at the inside of the top gap. If you curved them away from each other, widening the gap at the top, the spark should extinguish as it is forced to the end (where the gap would get bigger). Round all corners and edges near this point. If you want to have sharp "stabbing" points, put them on the outsides of the blade where the point-enhanced electric field would be less (due to distance). The electrical field is related to the inverse of the curve radius, so any sharp points or edges need to be considered as arc-producing spots.
Thanks, yeah I considered this but ultimately wanted a specific look. Having the tips inverted to me looked a bit strange. Off camera, I did dull the points significantly, and rounded the internal edges at the last 2-3 cm of the blades. Next version… will be biblical!
Pro tip for blade handle shapes: don’t make perfectly round handles. You can’t feel the edge alignment of your blade with them, and they’re more likely to rotate in your hand, further messing up edge alignment. Ovoidal and rounded rectangular are the best cross-sectional shapes for handles.
Been watching since the lightning and fire tornado videos, looooong time... Awesome to watch the maturation of content & production and growth of the channel (and the hairstyle 😂) over the last 6-7 years.
I love the design. I would consider copper plating the inner edges of the blades to provide better thermal and conduction edges. Copper plating is super simple to do at home. You can even do pen plating, this is where you use a pen with like a felt or wool to apply the plating to the specific places you want. Its very simple to setup, copper sulfate is cheap and you can use solid wire as the source of copper, but a small pipe is generally a little better. I think the inner 1/8" of the blades copper coated would make for a nice 2 tone color design as well. Just my 2 cents. I have a few of those 10kv power sources from ebay, i haven't figured out a project for them yet but this is great inspiration. Keep up the great content
You need to use some grounded metal screen over that fan to protect it like a farady cage, or over time the RF from the HV circuit will likely kill the motor windings in the fan .
I have no idea how anyone could give this a thumbs down. I imaging those folks are never happy. This is pretty darn cool, like pretty much everything else on this channel. Cheers!
because its just a knife with a lighter in the middle. The "plasma" isn't actually cutting anything, the metal blade is. An ACTUAL plasma blade would actually use the blade made of plasma to cut. NOT the metal, but the pure raw energy. This a just an over engineered kitchen knife with a lighter.
Your high voltage projects never cease to amaze me, and this Plasma Knife is no exception. There is one detail that I would have done differently, and that is to hide the hv wires through drilled channels in the plastic housing. I believe that the device, overall, would look more professionally designed and built. Except for that, you did a super awesome job on it!
Cool weapon! The upper part of the blades is very sharp, so the electric field strength is maximum on them. It was a problem on a first test. I guess the sharpest places should be placed further apart so that the sparks form more evenly along the entire length of the blade.
Two suggestions: first, try using a small drone motor to enhance airflow. Second, consider adding air holes just below the fan for increased efficiency. Additionally, plating the inside of the blades with a more conductive material could improve performance. Another idea place two clear pieces of plastic on both sides, just below the sharp part of the blade, as the lower end isn’t currently useful. Love the project keep up the good work!
I feel like you could help the problem of arcing at the tip by having the gap between the blades get wider there, like in Allen Pan's design - that way the arc has less "incentive" to stay at the top instead of restarting from the bottom. Also you should try and find a fan with the highest possible static pressure rating, to overcome the restrictions on the intake and exhaust.
13:30 Just saw Alan's video today and the only thing i have to say is that dont underestimate yourself! True alan made more plasma but he had also a huge leaf blower blower attached to it! You are the first to make it a real fully self contained knife! You are really awesome!!! Also a little note / suggestion to try and improve the plasma: i think laminar flow of air is something you should try to look into
My Brother in Christ, what you have made is the Vanu Power Knife "Lumine Edge" from Planetside 2 XD Which just happens to be my go-to melee in that game so Hell Yeah
When I heard you say "FS Blade" the first thought that popped into my head (since this was a 'hunting' knife that could be used for attack) was "Full Send Blade". You know...when you want to Fully Send all the damage to the enemy. lol
Since he said very specific scientific meaning, I thought "Faraday", being that this is a blade version of a Faraday cage. Then, I figured the "S" was an ode to "Spartan", or possibly, "Spark".
I remember seeing a new type of compact fan that is being made for laptops. It has no spinning parts but instead uses a micro membrane to move air like a bellows. Almost no noise and lots of air flow. Could be something to consider for a redesign of the plasma knife.
I want to see a Version 2 of this make it bigger and better! Amazing design work and that was a clever way to achieve what you wanted to do. Excited to see what you do with it in the future!
I saw these boards on Amazon last week and couldn’t help but think that at that size there are some really cool projects you could use them for. But I wasn’t expecting something this cool.
A cathode ray tube (CRT or old style TV screen) Runs at about 27,000 V. It can arc about an inch to 1.5". One time I had a TV that was putting out to much flyback voltage to the CRT (like a capacitor / battery) , and as I was explaining this to someone, I pointed to it, and it arced to my finger, about a 6 inch flash. I had on rubber soles, so nothing happened, lol, or it would have hurt. So I came away with a charge. Reminds me of a tesla plate.
An easy method is to reconfigure a Tazer. The popping noise, a major deterrent. The noise would vary, as it traveled up blade, like a Jacobs ladder. It might not travel, if previous pulse is not fast enough to catch the last ionization trail, that is drifting up or away from start point. Tazers are notorious for strong brief pulses, with pause between.
Very very cool maybe you can make it into a spear that will allow you to incorporate a lot more transformers and batteries to make it more powerful but the blade size can stay the same.
The FS Blade is very good but as we all saw that the plasma did't went up after a certain point. My advise please narrow the distance between the blades to about 5 or 4 mm and use a more conductive metal while increasing the 2 transformers to 3 and switching to the old handle but the same fan. This would do a lot better I think and can also be an great idea for a version 2 of The FS blade and if worked will shurely help in the actual Energy Blade.
"I didn't build this to be a weapon"......You may not have but I would have 😁, Electrostatic staff incoming soon! We need to make our toys more fuuuun XD
You could use small gas cartridges like for air guns or whipped cream dispensers instead of the fans. Then, not only might you be able to save on space/weight, you have the option of using different gasses for the plasma.
Great video! One tip for the blade shape: a higher primary grind is better for cutting. That knife uses a saber grind but it's a very low grind, resulting in a very obtuse angle. If space wasn't a constraint, the handle could have an oval cross-section to help blade alignment. Of course, if this is not used for cutting it's a non-issue.
You can make a sword based on this, changing the plasma generator with x2 40kv high voltage converter, x2 6000mAh lithium batterys, and a semi-turbine like fan for the plasma between the blades, and for the blades you can use tungsteno and silver, the blade that you made is so cool
One thing to note: An energy sword from Halo is sized for an 8 ft tall alien warrior with hands large enough to wrap around a human head. If space were an issue for them, they wouldn't have made the entire blade out of plasma.
1) I think youplague below is right when he says flame is a type of plasma. 2) I do see your point tho, this uses no gas or combustibles, very cool. 3) dammit I now want to see a flame/blowtorch sword lol
The powersource doesn't have to be in the handle. Heated jackets and sweaters have a pocket with a wire . The power source can be external. Belt worn , or back strap, or chest holster worn close to the shoulder to keep wire length short and hidden. Easy .
Might want to look into taser modules. There was a tutorial for a 150000 volt taser that could be adapted for this purpose. The fan can also be replaced with an electromagnet for a more consistent streM or with a class 4 uv laser to make jumping the spark gap easier. Best wishes and cool design nevertheless. Already want to build one myself.
Something to remember especially with this design, is going bigger on fan size isn’t necessarily a factor here, but static pressure rating is what should be focused on, because the focus point you’re creating to it while also having tight and obstructed intake space, is making getting that air flow rather difficult.
Energy weapons, mid-air holograms, replicators, interplanetary travel...in many ways, the real future is shaping up a lot like the imagined, though on a more limited scale.
So I said as much in the comments for Integza's recent video "This knife will change jet engines forever. But combing this sort of tech with the kind of metal 3d printing he was showcasing in that video seemed like a natural combination to me, and might allow for the creation of a plasma sword. I would also lean towards a belt mounted power pack similar to the StarWars Proto-Sabers.
If your going to make the full blade i would think you should go with a backpack with power supply and all your components even including fans with piping/wiring to the wrist. With the blade being pretty much impossible you could make the glowing part of the blade in plexiglass and case it in wiring to make it visually as cool as possible in the dark also sandwiching the ionized air in-between the plexiglass to help with the air flow to the end of the blades.
@Plasma Channel -- I think it did not occur to you that jet turbines have compressor blades and stator vanes with rows of tiny air holes along their edges allowing cooling air to be forced out to act as a protective barrier to the hellish temperatures and chemistry of the combustion stream. Using this tech you might supplement or replace your fan, even enriching the airflow with a gas with incandescent properties.
So, when you make that Gap for the plasma to flow, do not make it parallel, make it more like a wedge shape closer at bottom and wider at the end so the arc travels then dissapears at the end and doesn't keep arcing at the tip of the blade it will travel better
For equal spacing of the plasma could you forge highly conductive material at the spine on each side instead of the fan? Should be able to forge copper wire into the metal that comes to the surface at points all the way up the center and attach that to the battery. Extra points if the blade material is far less conductive but still can bring charge to the edge on contact.
If you don't want it to Arc at the base it should gradually get slightly wider as it reaches the top with the spacing maybe a difference of 1 mm there at the most between top and bottom might actually do it
Static friction or field strength are my guesses and the knife is great I'm a chef and that would be so amazing to slice something with in front of guests. Thanks for doing what you do, nice to know I'm not the only one who has crazy ideas and then makes them a reality
Looks like the plasma knives from Outer Worlds. Questions: Could you replace the fans with ionic air thrusters to make it quieter? Could you add a timing circuit to the transformers with a capacitor so it would produce a small burst of plasma every quarter-second instead of a tiny stream? Would that affect battery life and plasma profile? Could you make the tang of the blades longer and add more attachment points for stability? Could you thin the handle so it's oblong instead of perfectly cylindrical? I think that would fit more hands more comfortably. About how much would all the parts for the finished 3rd version cost if I wanted to make one from scratch? All in all, I think it's amazing and I wish I could buy one pre-made.
Well, the first thing I'd do is add a grip of some sort. Yeah, it looks cool; but it can potentially slip out of your hand. So, I'm thinking that it can look similar to that of a light saber handle with the button at the end just exposed enough to push it in and out. Along with a threaded cap for it, and a custom hilt to cover the fan. Hope this helps
I fist saw your videos on the ionic thruster and i already tought that was amazing so i got hooked on your videos and you continu to surprise me. This was another amazing video.
this is cool and all but idk if anything's gonna top his desktop nuclear reactor. that thing is cool as shit and also it's insane that he just keeps it turned on
Instead of using a fan to push the arc from hilt to tip just magnetize the blades such that the magnetic field is pointing from one blade to the other (if the blades are a ferritic steel you could drag a strong magnet across the blades from one to the other to do so, no unsightly magnets needed!). You would have to use some HV diodes to rectify the output, but this would allow the current and magnetic field to propel the arc down the blade (like a railgun) rather than having to use a bulky fan. Downsides are needing a DC output, but upsides are no fan noise, no extra power draw, and likely more uniform arc distribution along the length.
Id be ok with hooking onto a small worn module so all you need in it is the fan. That way you could go somewhat full tang with the blades in a very thick rubber handle
SUCH A SLAM DUNK Jay!!!! 💯⚡🗡🔥 I scrolled down the comments a bit and didnt see it said yet, so here goes.... The "FS" is obviously for 'FLAMING SWORD'! Straight. Up. BIBLICAL. 🤣😄 Great job on this build man. NEVER cease to impress... and always make it LOOK so EASY! 👏
A couple thoughts: If you clad the inside of the blades with copper then you might get better effect since copper has lower resistance. If you design a sword with a traditional handle rather than the halo design you could have a fairly long one to balance a longer blade and of course give you room for more electronics.
I have done this type of thing. If you create a surprisingly small B-field through the blade gap, then the arc will shoot right down the blade by the Lorentz force. If the blades were each magnets (axially) magnetized (PM)...or, alternatively, incorporate a couple of thin turns of tiny magnet wire (EM). No need for a fan, and you would also have the choice of shooting a capacitive discharge down the slot. --dALE

Something to remember especially with this design, is going bigger on fan size isn’t necessarily a factor here, but static pressure rating is what should be focused on, because the focus point you’re creating to it while also having tight and obstructed intake space, is making getting that air flow rather difficult.
New to the channel and this is a sweet invention. Just subscribed!
try a blower type fan, they can deliver much more air preasure for the same size
congratulations on your success.
imagine the fear a criminal would feel trying to rob you and you pull this out for self defense.
Bro you have no idea how happy I N to see someone else point out the energy swords on BMWs. You and I could be good friends I think.
Energy weapons, mid-air holograms, replicators, interplanetary travel...in many ways, the real future is shaping up a lot like the imagined, though on a more limited scale.
So, you basically built a very cool looking hand-held Jacob's ladder - Great video!
Super cool build! Hope this inspires you to work on the plasma sword next!
At 1:33 you have a drone shot of what looks to be a fire lookout tower. Could you tell me where that is? I would like to go visit it!
Apart from the wizardry-like projects, always wanted to say that the haircut makes him even more handsome.
If you don't want it to Arc at the base it should gradually get slightly wider as it reaches the top with the spacing maybe a difference of 1 mm there at the most between top and bottom might actually do it
Could you please make the files public on Onshape?
Shinji called, he wants his prog knife back.
Awesome work!
Questions:
Could you replace the fans with ionic air thrusters to make it quieter?
Could you add a timing circuit to the transformers with a capacitor so it would produce a small burst of plasma every quarter-second instead of a tiny stream? Would that affect battery life and plasma profile?
Could you make the tang of the blades longer and add more attachment points for stability?
Could you thin the handle so it's oblong instead of perfectly cylindrical? I think that would fit more hands more comfortably.
About how much would all the parts for the finished 3rd version cost if I wanted to make one from scratch?
All in all, I think it's amazing and I wish I could buy one pre-made.
Very well done!
Hope this helps
bro just crafted a legendary weapon
that sounds sooo cool and looks cool
I fist saw your videos on the ionic thruster and i already tought that was amazing so i got hooked on your videos and you continu to surprise me. This was another amazing video.
20 years from now: He has created a freakn´ LIGHTSABER.......
Use a magnet to control the plasma! You can magnetize the blades so the plasma gets directed towards the tip.
Can you make a plasma flame capable of melting borosilicate?
Jay!!!! Man, you just continue to surprise and delight.
Just one upping yourself over and over!!!!
Thanks Justin! You're awesome for being so kind. I'm definitely in the business of trying to innovate whenever possible.
@@PlasmaChannel why I'm a proud Patreon member!
this is cool and all but idk if anything's gonna top his desktop nuclear reactor. that thing is cool as shit and also it's insane that he just keeps it turned on
Instead of using a fan to push the arc from hilt to tip just magnetize the blades such that the magnetic field is pointing from one blade to the other (if the blades are a ferritic steel you could drag a strong magnet across the blades from one to the other to do so, no unsightly magnets needed!).
I scrolled down the comments a bit and didnt see it said yet, so here goes....
The "FS" is obviously for 'FLAMING SWORD'! Straight. Up. BIBLICAL.
🤣😄 Great job on this build man. NEVER cease to impress... and always make it LOOK so EASY! 👏
I love theres guys out there that can do this …….im not envious at all how dare you think that
The high voltage in the blade could probably hurt demons.
I was wonder what will happen touching it, or stabbing someone?
A couple thoughts:
If you clad the inside of the blades with copper then you might get better effect since copper has lower resistance.
If you design a sword with a traditional handle rather than the halo design you could have a fairly long one to balance a longer blade and of course give you room for more electronics.
And this is why I have the bell on, your videos never dissapoint
I have done this type of thing. If you create a surprisingly small B-field through the blade gap, then the arc will shoot right down the blade by the Lorentz force. If the blades were each magnets (axially) magnetized (PM)...or, alternatively, incorporate a couple of thin turns of tiny magnet wire (EM). No need for a fan, and you would also have the choice of shooting a capacitive discharge down the slot.
