6:50 actually, the AvP movies were based on the original AvP stories from all the way back in the 90s and early 2000s! In fact, AvP extinction (the game mandy showed there) released a year before the first AvP movie. While the movies were certainly middling at best, the crossover universe is so rich in lore and characters, and is the source of some of the most badass predator characters that don't just get pushed aside to "monster that gets killed by the humans by the end of the story" status. And if you have the time, it's definitely a universe I recommend checking out, a lot of these really old comics and games still hold up pretty well.
The Yautja are some of the most badass alien cultures in sci-fi, in my opinion. So great and one of the big reasons The Predator (2018) annoyed me so much.
Dune is one of those progenitor Sci-fi series that defined some the standards for the genre itself and the setting that Warhammer 40k DID NOT rip off. Dune having The Imperium, The God Emperor of Mankind, Navigators, Boltguns, Lasguns, Needlers, and wholesale Melee Combat in space is just a coincidence.
6:50 AvP had an absolutely amazing FPS game early on. My favorite things to do were single player as a colonial marine (very tense, everything could kill you at any moment), and multiplayer as an alien (chomping heads while crawling on the ceiling never got old, and the ability to rapidly crawl on all surfaces felt so good).
then AVP2 has a multiplayer that should be simple such as predator v marine v xenomorph yet the devs decided to add a sort of "class" to each one with strength and draw backs.
22:25 Elite: Dangerous, a space flight sim, actually handles this topic quite well. The sound you hear from 'space' is actually your ship generating the noise to help you the pilot understand your surroundings. If your ship canopy is breached, your ambient sound becomes muted as all the air escapes.
It'll take a bit, but before you watch Homeworld 3, you need to see Genesis: Rising, because a lot of the review will hit harder if you do. Mandalore also didn't include my personal favourite line, but when you're given a report on why Kharrak was made to burn, after talking to a prisoner, the fleet command voice ends by giving a final note to the prisoner, who seemed to be cooperating: "The prisoner did not survive interrogation." It then lingers on an empty shot to let the implications sink in.
Oh...oh YES. One of my favorite game universes. Just you wait to when you get to his review of the quasi-sequel Homeworld Cataclysm (technically Emergence now cause F you Blizzard) one of the strongest entries not just in the series but in Sci-Fi in general. And always remember "Kharak...is burning" "The subject...did not survive interrogation" Such freaking good voice acting
@@TheLegitWeebs You might need to be careful about what Mandalore videos you watch then since it's one of the games that has become part of the channel lore.

46:40 Ohh yeah. Stealing half your frigate wall from the Taiidan and Kadeshi was super fun. Missing that as well as missing Ion Frigates really bummed me out. That combined with the auto-difficulty meaning I could no longer manage difficulty through preparation kept me from getting far in 2, or Deserts.
Homeworld 1 & 2 just ooze style and atmosphere and it's definitely on my list of games that have stuck with me. There's a reason I frequently decorate ships in other games with Hiigara's blue and orange...
Homeworld and Thief in future?, those ones in particular I certainly bought thanks to Mandalore, so there's quite a few entries that will keep you busy 😁 By the way, I should give you the heads up when going into his 'Cataclysm' review, as you may know by now, unlike most other reviewers, whatever Mandalore has reviewed in the past, he'll naturally bring up the topic again if something reminds him of anything, in this such case, a certain music track called 'Enmity' from another RTS he touched upon awhile back, so if you feel somewhat confused at why he would say that, you'll know why, I know I was and even had to check it out myself 😅
OH DEAR GOD, DUNE Xero, I want to warn you, I listened to the first Dune book as an audiobook. THAT THING WAS TWENTY-ONE *HOURS* LONG Dune is a dense, incredibly long universe that... kinda gets incredibly fucking weird as Frank Herbert went from worldbuilding to progressing the story of Dune, and then apparently just went completely fucky when his son took over, so all I can say is; brace for weird shit.
By the way, Yes did the credits music. The album art for The Ladder even has the Kiith emblems on it! 40:10 Good news for Cataclysm, it is now Canon IIRC.
YEP Relic are responsible for Homeworld, where their squad based controls started, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. I'd say they were the best at single-player RTS campaigns. The remaster also got some good mods bringing other sci-fi franchises into it, being a good basis with its 3d system. Star Trek, Star Wars, Mass Effect, Battlestar Galactica... Even Gundam and Macross have mods.
24:59 homeworld cataclysm, homeworld 1.5 basically, has fleet command go on an amazing rant at the climax of the game, but it's still within this audio-only context and it hits extra hard because of it
Homeworld is great, but oh man I think you'll love Homeworld: Cataclysm. By far one of my favourite cosmic stories told because as much as it is SciFi, it is incredibly realistic with the technology we have today, well, almost. Side note. Dune is pretty much one of those foundational books that built science fiction, 40k draws heavy inspiration from it.
While you're handling this series, you should probably check out Noah Caldwell-Gervais's video on Homeworld. Apparently there was an expansion to the first game that was never remastered. Edit: I never played Homeworld before, but I have watched. I do like knowing about what I'm considering playing.
That 'expansion' is called Cataclysm, and it was turned into a full-fledged standalone. They renamed it because Blizzard has always been assholes, but it's called Cataclysm. Also, Xero, if you see this; Cataclsym is a horror game with RTS gameplay. Brace yourself.
There are actually a lot of AVP games. 14 if Google is correct. A few first person, the RTS that you saw on screen and a sidescroller a lot of people liked. Why is that you might ask? Well because AVP existed long before that movie you referenced. It was mostly in comics. Not all of them great, but popular enough to have been going on for a while. Which is where the games come in.
Damn wouldn't be surprised if IXION was inspired by Homeworld. IXION is also a pretty great game with a GORGEOUS OST from the composer that did OST for Mechanicus and a pretty haunting plot.
His Thief series is good. I would say do Civvie 11's Thief 1 and 2 series "Petty Thief" as well... except more on your own time. They're more like highly edited playthroughs compared to these reviews. Mandalore even mentions Civvie's Thief 1 series in his Thief 1 review. Those two are good for if you want a more deep dive if you don't see yourself playing those games, or a normal LP of them too, I guess. I would recommend other single video reviews of Civvie's content for reaction vids like this, namely the two Star Wars games (Dark Forces 1 and 2) he did seeing as you like space stuff.
The AvP games are based on the franchise croos overs in book and comic forms and not the movies that actually came a lot later. For instance there was a AvP FPS on PC etc also in the late 90s which was truly amazing at the time and had a three way assymetric system. So you had your Colonial Marines as bog standard FPS humans. Predators had their special visions and advanced weapons. While the Xenomorphs went full six degrees of freedom with running all over the walls and ceilings etc. The FPS were by Rebellion for the most part. AAnd the AvP he mentioned was a top down RTS which was on consoles and maybe a PC port. But was also trying to be an assymetric style with factions balanced around their styles. Akin to Starcraft but nowhere near that classic of course.
you definitely should watch the rest of his Homeworld videos, even the [noun.negative] that is Homeworld 3 and the prequel that is Deserts of Kharak 27:15 if you didn't catch it in editing, there's text flashed on screen: "Star Citizen NFTs are inevitable" 37:09 I do believe that is Warcraft, yeah, considering the situation with the "remake" of 3 that ended up with the original version suffering issues due to its release as well
I recommend doing the system shock videos and the thief series at the same time, as they are both made by looking glass and are good to watch together.
The original Homeworld was my favourite game for a long time after it was first released, and I listen to the soundtrack with some regularity to this day. An utterly spectacular game. I was sad to hear that 3 is not receiving as much positivity.
I comment this before watching this video (tomorrow): Homeworld has possibly one of the best universes I've ever seen, these Mandalore videos showed it to me and I wanted to play the whole series ... then I watched the Homeworld 3 video review of Mandalore. Good luck Xero.
With the movies themselves being kind of mid, I had assumed the games would end up following a similar pattern. Glad to hear that doesn't seem to be the case.
7:23 Kane, the iconic antagonist of the Command and Conquer franchise was portrayed masterfully by one of the Devs and is one of the best performances in a series that boasts Billy Dee Williams and other big name actors among its roster
I'll say this, I was playing the OG homeworld back in '99 at nine years old, If I can handle the OG at that young, you can handle the the remastered version no problem.
Wanna know something funny? IIRC the first Homeworld game was influenced by OG Battlestar Galactica and then the remake of BSG was in-turn influenced by Homeworld.
If you care about Science Fiction, absolutely do read Dune, it's the most important lore primer for 40k and the sci fi genre as a whole that exists. You will recognize most of the things from there in later media you have seen, but there will most likely still be very interesting surprises, and elements that later media do not repeat or borrow.
The dynamic difficulty screwed me and I had to download a mod to fix it. I optimized Level 1 to capture as many ships as possible. During mission 2, the game spawned so many enemy ships in response that I failed the mission before the "Karak is burning" cutscene ended, which sucks because it soured a really good cutscene.
Wow how topical. There is a new issue with Homeworld 3 which really sucks. Apparently, Gearbox thought it was a good idea to release a season pass for $100 (total with the game) then released a statement they wont be supporting the game anymore like 9 months later(?) so they shafted people out of half the season content. It caused Steam to change their polices, everyone review bombed the game. So now Gearbox got more of a tarnished rep and Gabe Newell gets another W for whapping another company with a newspaper.
Homeworld is great. Loved it since 2005, when I first found out about it. A pity Gearbox ruined 3 by mucking up the writing. IK some will blame BBI for what happened, but I don't.
Now you need to see his video on the best Homeworld game: Cataclysm.

Ah yes, the real Homeworld 2 ... and the only other Homeworld game, at least in my heart.
