This is a Dio era Black Sabbath song, but this video is from far later. Toward the end of his career really, and none of the band members here are from the Black Sabbath days. That being said, Dio had pipes all the way up to the end. He was a master singer and showman.
Ronnie was a real nice guy in person. I met him in Bonnet Shores, Narragansett RI back in the late seventies. He came to my parents 25th wedding anniversary and he dated (for most of his life) Pam C, who lived up the road. She was a super nice girl, and hung out with my brothers and sisters and their freinds. Dio was a real good guy, and we all miss him.
Happened a lot with rock stars, especially Dio, he treated his fans so well. Lzzy Hale tells a story about her experience touring with him: ruclips.net/video/SobrZRLBoec/видео.html Dio had been working since 1957 (!) when he was a teenager doing do-wop type stuff, through the 60's, was in a folky/blues band called Elf, got in with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, ended up in Black Sabbath in the 80's (with whom he wrote Heaven and Hell), formed Dio after he left/was fired (depending to whom you spoke about it), and came back on and off with Black Sabbath over the next 20 years. He was able to convey so much emotion with his voice, with a word. Very few singers or vocalists can do this - Bowie, Mercury, Robert Plant all were capable of it. I love Ozzy, but he was never as in touch with his emotions as Dio was. Now if you want to see Dio really using his voice in later years, check out the live version of Mob Rules back not too long before his death: ruclips.net/video/BTxSNosJrDo/видео.html
He makes you feel warm and welcome because as a person he was warm and welcoming. Thank you so much for this reaction Sir Rap Rat. I miss this man tremendously. His voice, smile. The world lost a tiny giant.
RRT, Hi there! Thank you thank you thank you for doing my request. It was dope and on fire!! Dio was/is a Metal God, and the best metal frontman ever (IMO). There will never be another one like him ever (IMO)! Although this was later in his career he still lit the stage! Dio has the best set of pipes I've ever heard. (IMO) Yeah, for his age here he did an epic show! Great reaction...glad you enjoyed it. Once again, thanks! I love Dio, and it's so sad he is no longer with us here, but he will always be with me in spirit. He was small in stature, but had a gigantic heart! RIP Ronnie James Dio. Much peace to you, RRT!! :-)
starburstppl thanks again for the great suggestion and to think I’m just getting started on his catalog of music I have long road but so far it’s been dope AF! 😆
A very special performance by RJD. A thank you to all the fans for their many years of support through thick and thin. He knew which side His bread was buttered by fans. Without them, you're nothing, and He said that over and over again. I've read the tales of Ronnie slipping away from management's hand to be found helping the roadies putting things in the trailers, of Ronnie spending hours even in the rain, making sure each and every fan was given their equal share of time with Ronnie, signing whatever they handed Him. He would make the bus stop if He spied homeless people and make sure they had food to eat and a place to stay. He was the least rock star type performer I've ever seen. Ronnie could often be found at a nearby bar/pub, having a drink and checking out local bands, and giving very sound advice to any and all who'd listen. I suggest you go find the Radio City performance by Heaven and Hell(DIO fronted Black Sabbath) from 2007, just two years later from this performance. Ronnie does an epic opening scream on "Mob Rules" that blew everyone's mind. No one even knew He could hit a note like that. Sometimes I stop the recording and go back and listen to that scream a few more times before actually watching the whole performance. But also go find some of the Ronnie and the Red Caps, (but there is a song called "Conquest" in which Ronnie does not sing on, but plays the trumpet. In fact the song is purely instrumental.) And look up Ronnie and the Prophets, along the musical timeline of Ronnie's early years, Electric Elves/Elves/Elf, their sound changed with the times, as was the norm in those days. Once you get to Elf, you'll notice a very Southern Bluesy Rock vibe happening.
5'3" and larger than life. Also, a genuinely nice, chill guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago. Musically, he dates back to the 60s, with a band called Elf.
For his age, his voice was pretty damn good at this stage. He was in his 60's during this performance. But yeah he was definitely better earlier in his career.
His first recordings go back to 1958!!!!! He played bass and did some vocals for a band called Ronnie and the Redcaps. This song was recorded originally in 1979/80.
Actually this is his prime as a vocalist! He utilize his voice to it's maximum potential! He plays with it like it's an actual instrument in his hands, he creates new vocal lines and harmonies during the whole song! He never did those things during the 80's or the 90's! He had completely control of his voice at that point! I am sure he could sing Stargazer so easy like carving a cake at that point!
Not only was RJD the best voice in metal, I swear he was also the most gracious and appreciative of his audience. I'm sad I never got to see them in concert.
He was most famous in the early 80s. He started in either the late 60s or 70s. But, I saw him in like 82 or 83 and he was at the top of his game. Not that he was ever bad. This is killer. Great fucking song, performance, vid. He does perform, plus he has killer pipes or vocals. The guitarist is one of my favs named Doug Aldrich. He went on to play for Whitesnake and is now in a band called the dead daiseys. This song is actually a song DIO wrote with and did with Black Sabbath after Ozzy was fired. Dio was Ozzys replacement. He can sing for sure. He might have been sick during this time. I saw an interview with the guitarists Doug Aldrich who said Dio would always give 100% of his self to the performance and audiance even though many times he was in pain and not feeling well. Poor guy. Doug Aldrich is a killer guitarists who's way under rated. If you want to hear a great blues song, or blues hard rock live, do a search for Doug Aldrich " Mistreated" which is an old Deep Purple blues rock song that is just killer. GREAT selection man. Killer. Just killer. The mix was great too, and the lights and shit. It takes a great set of musicians, but great crew members too in order to get a killer show. That's why tickets are expensive, but worth it. It's not just music, but an experience at a live show. A moment in time. Felix, my brother. You're going to have to go see a live show. You will not regret it if you pick a good one. If you're not sure if it's good, just ask me. 😂😂 Just kidding man. playing with ya. 😂😂 Peace to you my man. Hope you and family are well sir.. ✌✌
Hoosier Daddy everyone is great thanks for asking. Who knows maybe I’ll see a great show one day stay Peace ✌️ I also want to see some of dios really early work.
Rap Rat Trapped I thought you did one of his ealier shows already. There's a good vid he does with a guitarists that has a magical guitar as Dio calls it. The guitar glows while he solos in the vid. It's on here. Saw Dio in 84 on same tour. Was cool as hell. The guitarists is an Irish guy named Vivian Campbell.
Rap Rat Trapped Here ya go my friend. Same song, but much bigger production in 1984. Much much bigger, and he's in his prime. This was the time period I remember as being his most famous by far. ruclips.net/video/_tK7PN1PKzU/видео.html
He was fighting stomach cancer at this point. He died in 2010. You should check out the song he did with "Heaven and Hell" (the Dio era Black Sabbath members and him) called "The Devil Cried".
1 of my high school friends met Dio in line at Space Mountain in Disneyland.😃 This is a Black Sabbath song by the way. I saw the tour. Sabbath with Blue Oyster Cult. The Black and Blue tour
I feel blessed that I got to see Dio back in 2007 .Three years before he passed away.My opinion he was and will always be the Greatest Rock/Metal/Heavy Metal Vocalist ever. His vocal range is Mindblowing,,That man could sing anything..Still sadly missed by many..R.I.P \m/
I talk about music a lot .I'm a rock drummer of 35 yrs .had several great bands..so that's why I carry on . opened for many great performers and they are/were just good people doing what they loved .most is theatratrics for the fans.
He pwrformwd his last dew years of his life with stomach cancer. Never cancelled a show on his fans. True legend. This show was one of his cancer singing shows. Rip to the God of metal and the greatest front man.
i saw Dio one week after this was filmed, in a club with 1,500 rabid fans. I had seen Sabbath with Dio a few times and Ronnie solo four times. This is my favorite Dio lineup. Doug Aldrich is one of the best guitarist I have ever seen. .
Dio needs to pass the torch. it's time. He shall pass his cape and sepotor to me. And tenatious D!!! LOL... I love Dio; the man was before my time but through listening I've discovered that he is indeed a ROCK GOD!

Love your wide range of experiences. May I suggest Creedence Clearwater Revival "Run Through the Jungle". Very anti-Vietnam song or John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers (Featuring Eric Clapton) Hideaway?
His last recording may be his best though. Check our the album from his band called Heaven and Hell. It is easily one of best metal records of this century.
While I don't think that this is bad (far from it), I think this is THE version to enjoy and appreciate this song: ruclips.net/video/o3i-2nYatmU/видео.html - This originally is a Dio era Black Sabbath song. Long after Dio had left Sabbath (and Ozzy had rejoined) Dio and Tony Iommi started to work together again and they formed the band Heaven & Hell which was Dio, Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward (and later Vinny Appice instead, who had been in Sabbath as well). They recorded some of the Dio era classics (like this one) and a few new songs. I really like the musicians in this video but I prefer the original sound. I just have a thing for the original Sabbath and I love Appice's drumming. And surely, Tony Iommi's guitar playing blows anything else out of the water.
I'm maybe one of the biggest Dio fan in the whole fucking universe, but this DVD give me nothing, than pain Thisis like a titan fall... R.I.P the King! Sorry for my english
Plus fans like to "label" artists and others and don't really know them personally..Most who are thought is as "Evil and Dark" really are the opposite..Alice Cooper, etc .All good Christian men. Amazing huh
Unless you've been to one of his concerts hard to understand I've been to many concerts of many bands, too bad we'll never see Dio. live again. Saw him twice live
this is definitely not vintage Dio at his best but is alright nonetheless. A much better version of this song IMO besides the original 1979 studio track would be the concert from Black Sabbath performing this song when they played at Nassau Coliseum in 1980 uploaded somewhere on youtube. Of course Dio was a lot younger then but that's from his vintage era.

You can tell RJD's voice was no longer healthy. This version's key is way lower than the original.
Ronnie was a real nice guy in person. I met him in Bonnet Shores, Narragansett RI back in the late seventies. DIO had such a great voice and was really charismatic. Probably the most passionate singer I've ever seen.
even in his older days, dio was a metal god...
i was lucky enough to see dio in the late 80's. sacred heart tour. best show i've evere seen
fucker was fighting a dragon on stage
I hope I can walk that good in my 70's as he sings. Killed it to the end

Doug Aldridge on guitar was also in Whitesnake.Oh,and his brother played the drums in numerous bands.
Thanks for the name. Saw this incarnation of the band the last time I saw Dio. He's a great player.
Not only was RJD the best voice in metal, I swear he was also the most gracious and appreciative of his audience. I'm sad I never got to see them in concert.
Oh, Rudy Sarzo on bass, love it. Love it
He's not the greatest bass player but he's go the best stage moves!

Love dio.this was way later in his career but he still rocked it.awesome song for a Friday evening great choice my friend. Peace.✌✌✌✌
I think the difference between Dio and Bowie is that Dio connected more with the fans whereas Bowie was a bit more aloof and artsy.
I think the differences between the 2 are voluminous. The only thing they have in common is they both sang songs, the similarities end there.
He was fighting stomach cancer at this point. He died in 2010. You should check out the song he did with "Heaven and Hell" (the Dio era Black Sabbath members and him) called "The Devil Cried".

Dio's first single as a bassist was in 1958. His first as a singer was 1961. Not remotely metal then. He was 63 in this video.
I was raised on rap...but this is AWESOME music!
Dio is God :)
At any School of Heavy Metal, in any history of Heavy Metal book, program, lesson etc......this song, this singer and the album will ALL be discussed.
I think you got it right: Bowie was an artist, Dio was a performer (and God).
