The Big Sur International Marathon is held every year on the last Sunday in April, and registration is determined by a series of random drawings that open beginning later in the summer. There are six different running events that take place under the Big Sur International Marathon. They are the 26.2 Marathon, 21-Miler, 11-Miler, 12K, 5K, and Relay. For the marathon, there is a 6 hour cut-off time (13:45 per mile pace). The six hours starts when the final runner crosses the start in the final corral. You must reach Mile 15.2 by 10:30 A.M. or Mile 21.2 by 11:50 A.M. If you don't, they won't let you continue in the Big Sur International Marathon. The Big Sur International Marathon is also part of the Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge, in which runners are ranked by combined times of both events.
The marathon start is at the Big Sur Station on Highway 1 in Big Sur. The start time is at 6:35 A.M. and there are typically 5 corrals that runners will be placed into. All runners must use free transportation to the start of the Big Sur International Marathon. Highway 1 is closed early race morning to private vehicles and the buses leave really early.
The Big Sur Marathon is entirely on Highway 1, the nation's first designated Scenic Highway. The course runs alongside redwoods, historic ranches, a scenic lighthouse, and alongside the Pacific Ocean with great views of waves crashing on the rocks. It also features numerous hills including a long climb to Hurricane Point between miles 10 and 12 and rolling hills from mile 22 through mile 25.5. The starting elevation for the race is 356 feet and the elevation at the finish is 10 feet. The Big Sur Marathon has 11 aid stations, which is fewer than many other marathon. It is recommended to bring your own hydration vest. There are 12 entertainment stations with local groups and performers including the popular Taiko Drummers halfway up the climb to Hurricane Point and Michael Martinez playing the piano just after the Bixby Bridge at mile 13.2. Cell phone coverage is not good over most of the course, so be aware of this fact. .
