I had the same reaction. These guys are supposed to be the best and they couldn't pull the shaft and put in whatever Ian wanted? Strange. Cool Clubs's robot testing showed this iron as being exceptionally consistent - up there with the Miura TC-201 (Ian's old irons!) and the Cobra Limit3d. I get that spin was lower than Ian would like but I was very surprised they didn't immediately swap to the Pro V1x, which spins a lot more on short irons. Despite his unhappiness with the spin, these standard deviations are exceptional & I'm very interested in this set despite having only one TM club currently in my bag (a very old 3-wood).
I appreciate the honesty in the review. The spin is just something for people to keep an eye out when they demo the clubs themselves. The spin window may be different or even preferable for a different swing type.

Ian, what are the build specs of your irons? 37.25” 7i and a degree or 2 up? Also curious if you step down in length with your wedges or if gap/sand/lob are all the same length.
Sounds like you at least tried to bend them 2 up, but couldn't. So another set of irons that says "forged" on it, but not nearly the same quality as a Mizuno or Srixon?
It’s a forged face not a forged head they don’t hid that fact it’s not a forged CB or blade it’s a players distance iron with a forged face and cast head. That’s no secret bro.
These and the P7CBs test out on Cool Clubs's robot as the most consistent irons regardless of where you hit it on the face. Like, if you hit your 7i 150, then these are gonna go 150 every single time. All the other player's distance/game improvement irons test out to be similarly dispersed left-to-right, but land anywhere from 120 on low heelers to 180 on perfect sweet spot strikes. Ridiculous.
I'd be curious to ask TM. Why 7 iron for the start of the speed slot? If the majority if players like and hit it well, do they need the slot? Why not 6 up?
Custom/quality control at TM has genuinely put me off. Guy next to me at the range 2 months back, received the day before TM Qi irons and going on a golf holiday the following day. Took no more than 5 shoots and the head of his 9 irons went flying down the range. He was in the second to last bay and it got lost in the weeds along the fence. Toptracer range guy looked on CCTV could see it in the air but could not find the head at that time. Clubs had come from American golf who apparently get them from TM build. (not sure if that's the case or the component build). The range guy who also sells TM said it was about the 9th time he could remember a TM head coming off but to his memory none of the other OEM's had. It's a one time story but it put me off. Now days I would go to a CCUK or similar to get the shaft I want. PXG only ones that provide a shaft OffTS (Steelfiber). But with those in the past the Ferrulls didn't fit well. Of course these guys are knocking out thousands of sets.
Been waiting for this review and feel like I didn’t get what I wanted with the irons not being in Ian’s specs. I game the 2023 version and want to know how much of a difference there are between the models seen as I gave TaylorMade £1100 last summer!!!
@@iLovettGolf I don’t want to try them for myself. I wanted the true opinion of these guys who literally hit every single iron that gets released. I really want them to be shit in all honesty 😂
Regarding spin being player specific - I tested these against my T150s yesterday. P770s saw about 700 more spin, 2 degrees higher launch, and 10 yards shorter. Just goes to show how clubs react differently to different swings.
I think it isn’t necessarily universal. It might just mess with your normal swing mechanics and the results could go either way from person to person. What it does do flatten the effective lie angle.
Have you seen Mikey’s swing? I’m betting static lie angle between the 2 is 3* or even more. Not that you couldn’t bend them flat for Mikey, given they are forged base clubs, just that it’s more film time and it sounds like the schedule is pretty packed with shoots today…or the day this vid was shot
Not TaylorMade (at least prior to this release - not 100% sure about this new one). Forged 4140 face welded to a cast 8620 body. AFAIK only Mizuno & PXG forge every part of their multi-piece irons. Callaway tends to the reverse of TM - forge the body and weld in a cast face cup. TM makes three sets of fully forged irons - P7TW, P7MB & P7CB, so if that's what you're after, that's your list.
Great first look and insight as always! But why wouldn't you build them out with your own specs first, grab a previous p770 and THEN review them? The information for the viewer would be so much more valuable. As you guys said yourselfs at the end... Keep it up! Greatings!
They dropped the traditional loft from the first generation. So the new 770's are just the old 790's with thinner profile. Maybe they will come out with a 750's next year that has the traditional lofts.
Ive always struggled to get thin faced, hollow irons to spin properly without bending them very weak. I just think they are for a very specific player, but that player might as well go 790.
NOT the review outcome I expected. I ordered my 770's a few weeks ago, sad times. Haha. I hope it was just a fitting thing being in his head, the spin is odd.... maybe different shaft?
It certainly feels like TM had to get something to market and opted to retool the p760s and RAC irons. Not a fan of either line of their irons this year
Love the channel usually, but this a poor review of a club a lot of people want to see (I have last years P770 and love them). TM obviously made a massive mistake here, but then why not wait until they’re fit correctly? You always speak about the importance of a correct fit, but then review clubs not fit correctly 😞
That’s really concerning that the actual TM HQ couldn’t build the clubs in the correct spec, for one of the worlds most popular and successful review channel and club fitters! That for me puts worries for consumers that the product they may receive from them when ordering at other retailers could be poorly built. Great review as always gents, but could hear rhetorical disappointment in your voices
They are also 120S, I believe his gamer is 120X. It sounds like the lie was too flat, maybe because the shafts are shorter he wanted more upright lie. The fact is 1/2” in shaft length is significant. It’s something you can adapt to over a couple sessions but this was going in cold, stretching then performing test on 1/2” shorter club. It’s going to affect ball striking and impact position of club face
@@seanpeacock5595 Do that for every shot on every hole and you'll have a pretty hard time. Or, hit every shot a club short on every green, maybe even hit the drink playing in tournaments. Mix it in with the calculations from a flyer lie for good measure. Golf is all about confidence in every part.
It's no different than a driver, when you hit something beneath the cog launch lowers and spin increases, hit higher up the face and above the cog launch increases and spin drops. That's why intentional mini-thins with a high lofted wedge launch lower & spin higher.
Haven't checked, but are their standard off the shelf irons .5" longer than their own rule then? This is a really shitty product unless this was a true anomaly.
Straight from Taylormade’s website: “TaylorMade’s FLTD CG and precision milled clubface create high launch with the long irons, and lower launch, HIGH SPINNING shots in the short irons.” At least for Ian, the short irons were quite low spinning….hence why he pointed it out.
Sorry guys, too opinionated for open reviews... it seems if you like them b4 u hit them its a great review and if ur on the fence its average. You say get fitted and buy them but really u guys push the CB's etc coz u love them but u are both single figure players... but the driver review from titleist had very different figures than in ur bay?
How were you not able to change the length? How can you not change the shaft? Complaining that the clubs are not the right spec, which obviously had an impact on the review, is absurd! You are the biggest club builder in the world and you just did an entire review of a club without the correct specs. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for club champion

I think it isn’t necessarily universal. It might just mess with your normal swing mechanics and the results could go either way from person to person. What it does do flatten the effective lie angle.
What did they swingweight at 1/2" short?
maybe have Mike hit them to see if it's a spin anomaly from your swing or a function of the iron itself
@@MichaelM-to4sgon these I believe only the face insert is forged, and the rest is cast. Don’t think you can bend these too much.
@@MEAT0 Interesting. I thought the base was a forging, then a cast of machined face insert laser welded to that forged base. Thanks
You work for Club Champion. Why didn’t you build them or your HQ build and send them to you right? Makes no sense.
TM had set the 770 lofts so that they combo well with the CBs, but they are +2.5deg to 790s, so don’t know how you can combo 770/790.
It's in their custom order chart how to blend it
Bend the 790’s to suit
Great first look and insight as always! But why wouldn't you build them out with your own specs first, grab a previous p770 and THEN review them? The information for the viewer would be so much more valuable. As you guys said yourselfs at the end...
Keep it up! Greatings!
We need a new players irons comparison with these and the newer irons
Gap between 9 and 7bis like 30 yards.... please explain
They dropped the traditional loft from the first generation. So the new 770's are just the old 790's with thinner profile. Maybe they will come out with a 750's next year that has the traditional lofts.
Do we really think there is a significant difference between these and last years model?
TM clubs not coming in to spec is not all that surprising tbh
Ive always struggled to get thin faced, hollow irons to spin properly without bending them very weak. I just think they are for a very specific player, but that player might as well go 790.
1000% this.
You said the 9 iron felt hollow??
NOT the review outcome I expected. I ordered my 770's a few weeks ago, sad times. Haha. I hope it was just a fitting thing being in his head, the spin is odd.... maybe different shaft?
It certainly feels like TM had to get something to market and opted to retool the p760s and RAC irons. Not a fan of either line of their irons this year
My next iron set will be T150 or JPX Forged. I'm done with TM clubs.
Please do PXG 0317 T against these!
TM rarely gets their builds correct in my experience. Its crazy how much they charge and then you get sent the wrong specs
Any talk of a new/updates P790 coming soon..? Cheers fella’s…
One already came out last year. Not gonna happen again till next year maybe even 2026
Got it… Thanks for the quick reply… 🍻
@@curtissmithgolfa p770 came out last year and here we are. Anything could happen 😂
They should call it the T770😂
TM uses 2 different ways to measure length? 😮
Ian is rattled about the half inch shorter shafts haha
its his swing not the club
They are also 120S, I believe his gamer is 120X. It sounds like the lie was too flat, maybe because the shafts are shorter he wanted more upright lie.
The fact is 1/2” in shaft length is significant. It’s something you can adapt to over a couple sessions but this was going in cold, stretching then performing test on 1/2” shorter club. It’s going to affect ball striking and impact position of club face
@@MichaelM-to4sgmake for a really slow round if you need a couple of sessions before I switch to a club 1/2” shorter 🙄
@@tmajik86ignorant comment. Just go ahead and tell everyone you don’t know what you’re talking about
@@seanpeacock5595 Do that for every shot on every hole and you'll have a pretty hard time. Or, hit every shot a club short on every green, maybe even hit the drink playing in tournaments. Mix it in with the calculations from a flyer lie for good measure. Golf is all about confidence in every part.
Thought low on head of an iron decreased spin.
It's no different than a driver, when you hit something beneath the cog launch lowers and spin increases, hit higher up the face and above the cog launch increases and spin drops.
That's why intentional mini-thins with a high lofted wedge launch lower & spin higher.
I don’t get this review and commentators. Dude stripes everything. Is fussy about measurements, you own that. These look like great clubs.
770 vs JPX Forged
Game over for Taylormade
I think it’s hilarious that he just purposely thinned every single shot to prove a point 😂
Haven't checked, but are their standard off the shelf irons .5" longer than their own rule then?
This is a really shitty product unless this was a true anomaly.
Shaft maybe ???
Taylormade have marketed these as lower spinning, higher launch irons. So I'm surprised, at your surprise.
Straight from Taylormade’s website:
“TaylorMade’s FLTD CG and precision milled clubface create high launch with the long irons, and lower launch, HIGH SPINNING shots in the short irons.”
At least for Ian, the short irons were quite low spinning….hence why he pointed it out.
Safe to say Ian is not a fan lol
Title a bit misleading, no? Review claims they are high pitched, techy feel.
First!!! I want a set of these or P7CB
You guys couldn't pull the shaft and build it to your spec??? Come on!!
"Disapointed" like Darth Vader's disappointed in everyone in Empire Strikes Back...
Keeps hitting it thin like its a half inch short...
770s vs mizzy 243 please Ian?
You probably want to send the right set up for Ian, yikes...
They likely need to send them back. Probably wouldn’t be wise to rebuild them and risk a potential error. Possibly not allowed to build with them yet as well? Just spit balling
Nothing worse than hearing the review of a new club hasnt been built to your spec right from the start.
TM is total trash as far as quality goes.
I love the click bait title. They know these aren’t even close to the best feeling irons. Such bullshit. Shame on txg
This is such a terrible video. What a waste and it’s 100% the fault of yall.
Ruh-roh Taylormade once again delivering a shitty product
bulls**tting continues
What do you mean by BS’ing?
Wait TM clubs are shorter? I have always felt that. I'm not tall and i strike them thin sometimes for that reason.
