This is quite enlightening, he is quite cool,calm and collected and tells a story that should resonate with fellow-special-forces vets. He doesn't get emotional, he's very matter-of-fact about a world I will never know about. Kudos !!

most people who criticize this guy haven't even read the book. I guess the other patrol members died out there from old age.. This man came from an orphanage, was raised by foster parents, had a hard childhood, rose to senior NCO in one of the most respected military units in the world. I met Andy today as part as an english trip, he gave a talk about his life in the millitary and after he actually signed a book for me that i bought from him today ; The new recruit. I must say; he is a pretty inspirational guy.
Mcnab is a man who showed extreme gallantry and bravery disregaurding his own safety for that of others throughout his time in the SAS and the Royal Green Jackets. Only those who were there with him on the operation witht he call sign Bravo Two Zero have the right to dispute what he said. Interestingly. Chris Ryan, the author of "The One That Got Away" tells his story which largely corelates to that of Mcnab's. If you would Like to read some of Mcnab's fiction there are many out there. However,
I suspect that the story he told was the one that MOD wanted told and that was the deal for letting him write a book. Wheras they tried very hard to stop the Kiwi in the patrol from writing his version.

Just finished Ryan's book, says he was cold and hungry. Says he killed 2 blokes with a knife, why not take their jackets? See's enemy sleeping, why not kill them and take food? Bit iffy some of it.
Blob B SAS and SBS go through exactly the same selection and continuation process. Both are equally as tough to get into. SBS is regarded as “tougher” as there is the naval warfare training after where an SAS candidate would be ‘badged’. The SBS candidate can still be returned to unit if they fail the naval warfare training
I haven't read Bravo Two Zero but I have watched Michael Asher's documentary where he retraced the account of what's stated in the book. The documentary is available to watch on YT. 'Bravo Two Zero The Real Story' In the documentary Michael Asher spoke to Peter Ratcliffe', the SAS RSM at the time of the B2Z operation. Peter Ratcliffe debriefed both Ryan and McNab after the events and his opinion is that they embellished what actually happened. Peter Ratcliffe also stated that had B2Z gone in vehicles rather than on foot, the mission would have been successful. The young goat herder, now a grown man, claimed he never saw any of the patrol and didn't raise the alarm.
How could someone find and speak to a young goat herder that they saw if they never saw one? If they never saw one there would be no one to find and ask about it.

I once met Chris Ryan at a Q and A in Cheltenham and asked him how it felt for Asher to say the things he has said. Obviously, even if there was any truth to it Ryan wouldn't say so and especially not in front of an audience, but he looked furious. I can't remember his full response but it definitely contained the words "I wish I could meet him".

The SAS in the Gulf War proved that men on the ground and SF as a whole, still had a vital role to play in warfare, more notably over the use of technology.

I bought this bravo two zero book recently off amazon because it was advertised online. it's from 1993 before I was born and it's the best story I have read. ive since done a lot of work about who is andy McNab and it seems he's a real psychopath army commander. this video of him I get the impression he's really confident and with a doesn't care about anything type confidence. it seems this success has also made him a multi millionaire really wealthy according to Google it's 1.5 million Bravo Two Zeros books at 14.99 each in 1993 and 9 million at 4.99 each.
What strikes me is that a lot of the negative reactions here are people who havent been on the ground with BTZ and still have a lot to say about it. The man obviously served in the SAS, and that tells me enough to know that this man is a very intelligent individual who has done things and seen things that we computerwarriors would never dream of . So unless you have intimate knowledge of the guy or the operation shut up and say thank you for your service.

Read his book and the Real B20 book and seen the video. Asher amazed me that with minimum effort and at every turn he came up with the “key witness”. Just struck me as too good to be true in many respects. Not sure who to believe, only those guys know the true story and the guys who did the debrief and sanctioned the book release

They didn't have the propa equipment, clothing, problems with the communication, from the start it was FCK up... Saying that they put up a strong fight considering it was only a few men that were poorly equipped
Secondally, he is an author and this is how he makes his living. Therefore he has to give as much away as he can without compromising his safety and that of others close to him. If you read citations and accounts about his work in Northern Ireland with the SAS and the Royal Green Jackets he has to keep his identity and features secret because he spent a large ammount of time fighting in Northern Ireland and infiltrating the IRA undercover for the SAS.

Whether this guy is a sell out, over dramatic or not... this guy has my respect i don't think id be able to cope and operate at 100% in a killing house with live fire, let alone fight on missions with the best SAS squads in the world.
That is because a lot of them didn't do the nature of work he did. Not only did he serve in Northern Ireland as an infantry soldier but did a lot of protection detail and spec ops there. He also worked for 14th det (in the intelligence corps) which involves 'snatching' and bringing down main players and caches well worth killing over (to them).
Just watch Michael Asher's film The Real Bravo Two Zero before buying any books from this "hero". Also check out the statements of fellow Bravo Two Zero members or the SAS's Regimental Sergeant Major at the time, Peter Ratcliffe. I'm not saying the ordeal the Bravo Two Zero members went through wasn't worth the medals. But when someone claims a kill ratio only plausible in Battlefield 3 (8 soldiers causing more than 200 enemy casualties in just a few days) some fact check might be necessary.
Just saw all 4 parts of "The Real Bravo Two Zero" and I have to say that Andy McNab writes good fiction based on the reputation of the SAS. Too bad that all the discrepancies cast a very bad light on his character.

I think you mean Soldier Five for the second book. It contradicts McNab also. Coburn makes some claims of his own which contradict Asher's witnesses (not Asher himself) but there is no independent support for his claims e.g. that an anti-aircraft gun fired on them, or that Mal shot some people. If Asher can go into Iraq and question witnesses, there is no reason why McNab, Ryan, Coburn or their defenders can't also. There would be records of an anti-aircraft unit in the area, and of deaths. But guess what, none of them ever have. I know Mal and I would be interested if he ever went into print himself.

It's a shame that this guy's burned so many bridges in telling his story. Between him and Ryan the truth seems to have been given the elbow. The 250 guys these guys were supposed to have killed is not true, even the regiment seem to down play this guys story.
He didn't dislike them. Plus, what does it matter he reveals the identities of the dead (one of which I knew and I can prove it). The reason he hides is because he is still alive and participated in sensitive operation in Northern Ireland of which he would be vulnerable to, now he has publicly declared that he did participate in.
After just having read the book, before Mcnab writes anything it is checked over numerous times by the British government to ensure that it is as factual as possible whilst not giving anything away. This is done because Iraq is still a very sensitive issue in today's world. If you watch documentaries and read about the selection process that Mcnab would have gone through for the SAS it is fully justifiable that he did kill as many as he claims.
Don’t kid yourself. All they check for is whether military secrets are being released. There is no factual check. His book is a great story based on what happened. It isn’t history though.
I have never been in the armed forces and in war would be the biggest coward so I take no pleasure in disrespecting SAS guys. But, this guy seems to have embellished his account of B20 and spoken very badly of a comrade. Whatever happened he should have maintained a dignified silence about his comrades and kept to the high standards we love about the SAS. I really don't like this guy and feel his obsession with anonymity is just a 'spin' to make him seem the brave secret warrior. He admits he had virtually no formal education but claims to have written his novels. Clearly he has a ghost writer. Nothing wrong with that but at least be honest enough to admit it. Have read many very uncomplimentary comments about him and he is very poorly thought of by former comrades in the regiment. I still have huge respect for the SAS regiment but not for this guy.

So basically suffering PTSD full stop, just like so many others in SF community but do not dare to say it out aloud, because he would know straight away no work whats so ever, so you have to use your ego and put on a great show chaps or your out on your own full stop, even to this day it still the number one thing with in SF community that will make man into criminals because they have no choice in the matter, the things they do and see on missions are so classified that even the government hearings into their actions cant get answers so just imagine the things they have done for their countries right or wrong, they never will be charged with war crimes or wrongful deaths no matter what the circumstances are full stop. Also to name others that died as part of the SAS in Bravo Two Zero mission in a book is wrong and then to make out that they have killed over 250 men ( Which has a knock on effect) Just one person who dies in a car accident has the effect on the average family of 80, so just imagine what 250 men dead would do to those family and what the commanders of those men did nothing no reporting ) during the missions you would have 1/2 the Iraqi army after them, yet they are trained to be so secretive in the missions, to get the job done and have a plan for the regress, yet the men were sent in without the right radio comms and a plan based on intel that was totally wrong, it looks like to me either they were set up or a totally stuffed up mission and in the end its was those men who ran for their lives basically in a desert with Below 0 temps and no below temp clothes, they were geared up for a desert action, so andy McNabb is telling tall tales to sell a book full stop, which is all the rage now with SF communities, but a least those that tell the truth will always gain respect for the SF communities and the others will be left own their own to fight for the rest of their lives with PTSD and other mental health issues ? When he mentions that a mother will kill anyone that tries to harm her kid, well anyone knows that, but its totally different when you dont have a gun to defend yourself and you do have rifles pistols and other means to bring hell on earth on a spot with a laser guided missiles at the ready or a C130 gunship at the ready to rain down hell on people with no weapons like they do and nothing is done about it ?
I love the sas and most of the lads are great solders but I believe from watching a documentary about the bravo two zero mission a lot of what he wrote in his book was made up....I know in books they like to embellish things to add drama but if it's a book based on reality then that's what should be in it...the truth...there are several versions of what happened and it's hard to know what is real......they would be considered brave just going behind enemy lines on botched up orders from the men at the top without adding things...that is if mcnab is lying. Most people would be scared going what they went through even if they killed nobody...just being there in the conditions that they were in was hard enough....just wish we knew the real truth....but McNabb has earnt a lot of money and got a lot of fame out of his story so why would he change his story now if what he originally said was false.
I personally think most of It was true, apart from some aspects which was added to help sell the book to make it more interesting to read, End of the Day, They Are True Heroes, most people wouldn't even pass selection, I know I Definitely Couldn't carry 200kg on my back for that far

He doesn't actually lie in BTZ but what he does do is extremely exaggerate the truth, It was all about selling book's and making money, I salute this man for serving his country for ten year's in UK special forces.
Exaggeration is a form of lie. He said the patrol accounted for over 200 dead when there is no evidence of any casualties at all. He said they walked for miles carrying over 200lb of kit when it was only a few hundred meters. He said they went toe toe to with an AA battery with APCs and dozens of enemy when they actually lost a fight to a few farmers.

Mike Coburn (Mark or Kiwi in B2Z) as well as Mark Radcliffe (RSM at the time and author if Eye of the Storm) both disagree with Mitchell's (McNabb's) version of events. I also worked with WO2 B (Dinger) for a short period some years later who would get very angry when the issue was discussed, and who hated Mitchell with a vengeance because of how he misrepresented the patrol. Even Armstrong's (Ryan's) version of events don't match up. Combine this with the fact that he has been completely disowned by the Regimental Association and has been persona non grata by the Regiment since he wrote the book, doubt is thrown on the account.

@@cheekboy7247 It's in the last chapter of Bravo 2 Zero. He states near the end of the book that post op intelligence reports attributed the patrol with 200 Iraqi dead. I read Soldier 5 when it first came out. It gives a very different version of events and is quite critical. There is nothing in it about taking on swarms of enemy in APCs during the initial contact for example, which is consistent with Asher'sinvestigation (Although I would not take Asher's account as legion either). Quite a bit was different. The MoD tried to stop the Soldier 5 being released because of what it contained, (Both Mitchell's and Armstrong's books were vetted and edited by the MoD before release) and he had a 5 year legal battle over it.
I once read somewhere that an SAS officer (Lieutenant?) refused pointblank to go on a mission in Iraq because he felt it was badly planned by the brass and "He sat calmly drinking tea at HQ and refused to budge"
Actually that was the 3rd “bravo “ patrol that deployed that night when B20 went out, and bravo 3 zero went out, I’m guessing this patrol would have been bravo one, well according to McNab, Des powelll and Chris Ryan said it was one of the bravest acts by not deploying due to terrain no cover. And the patrol commander would have been a sergeant, whose career suffered as a result of not deploying

I don't think i've heard complaints saying McNab's book was unduly embellished, so don't get him mixed up with fellow B20 member Chris Ryan who wrote a book called 'The One That Got Away', which a lot of people (including some B20 members) say WAS embellished and a pack of lies.

It isn't full fiction you numpty. It has been proven that certain parts of Bravo Two Zero were either misinterpreted in the midst of warfare by him and/or certain bits had to be changed. What you are saying is that he wasn't in the Gulf nor on a patrol which mist died and he got captured and tortured.
shoot to kill does exist. He means if we went round bumping them off they'd be all dead but I don't think that's what 'does shoot to kill exist?' means. WHEN they shoot it is to kill because warning shots and shots to arms legs etc to incapacitate are forbidden in the yellow card's rules of engagement.
It's really sad that he chose to embellish his book from fact into fiction because it has destroyed his credibility. So even when he is saying something genuinely worth listening to now he will be disregarded and disbelieved. It takes courage to go to war and it also takes courage to speak the truth.
D Squadron or the Mountain troop of the SAS, destroyed numerous SCUDs, alongwith communication centers, an example would be the "VictorTwo"mission where a group of SAS men assulted an Iraqi Barracks mistaken for a petty Fibre-optic cabel center (one role the SAS had).
Good point actually, most mothers would put themselves infront of their child in desperation maybe but I don't think I've ever heard of any cases of mothers killing people who threaten their children. Incidentally, there have been huge studies now from many major wars which show that even soldiers (usually drafted, rather than highly trained that is) often don't even fire their weapons during battle because they can't do it. Huge numbers of rifles were found from the American civil war that had multiple shots stuffed down the barrel, still in them.. the reason being they kept pretending to go through the motions of loading but weren't firing. In the trenches of WW1 and even the D-Day landings huge numbers of soldiers, some even by their own accounts, didn't fire or fired over the top of the enemy line. They knew full well that the people they were firing at were just regular folk like themselves and many were also very religious and just couldn't bring themselves to kill. Often men were executed by their own officers for not fighting or trying to run away. The military now knows this very well, and this is exactly why professional soldiers today are so rigorously trained and conditioned to kill and also to withstand the horror of actual war - anyone who can't be trained to 100% follow orders no-matter what and show any signs whatsoever of not being able to kill on command don't get in or are weeded out very quickly. It was far easier in ancient societies because many people were often thoroughly brutalised and jaded from childhood - Roman society had children treated as slaves to die in ore mines for the empire's wealth and so on - growing up then as a child was completely different to now, as you were immediately beaten, abused and thrown into work the moment you could walk and violence and military culture were literally what the entirety of life was all about in those empires (which is why Rome was so successful in terms of empire, but also why it eventually crumbled).
A good soldier but he sold his code of conduct with the SAS for dirty money. The bravo 2 zero story was embellished to the point of ridicule. Other members died in honour ,others were given medals but this man had money in his sights and has sadly let the regiment down.
Am I wrong in thinking the brass should never have ordered the B20 mision in the first place? I mean, being dropped off behind enemy lines in open desert to go around on foot blowing up landlines and Scuds sounds like a suicide mission to me. Did the brass think the Iraqis wouldn't try to track them down?

I take your point that he does deserve some recognition for his service but my point is in relation to the book which was clearly embellished. Some of the patrol died in that operation and for that reason I don't think he should have pocketed a lot of money from his own made up account of what happened. It seems very insensitive to the regiment and the families of those who were lost. You say so what but respect and honour do matter in my opinion.

I met Andy today as part as an english trip, he gave a talk about his life in the millitary and after he actually signed a book for me that i bought from him today ; The new recruit. I must say; he is a pretty inspirational guy.
Mcnab is a man who showed extreme gallantry and bravery disregaurding his own safety for that of others throughout his time in the SAS and the Royal Green Jackets. Only those who were there with him on the operation witht he call sign Bravo Two Zero have the right to dispute what he said. Interestingly. Chris Ryan, the author of "The One That Got Away" tells his story which largely corelates to that of Mcnab's. If you would Like to read some of Mcnab's fiction there are many out there. However,
I suspect that the story he told was the one that MOD wanted told and that was the deal for letting him write a book. Wheras they tried very hard to stop the Kiwi in the patrol from writing his version.

SBS is regarded as “tougher” as there is the naval warfare training after where an SAS candidate would be ‘badged’. The SBS candidate can still be returned to unit if they fail the naval warfare training

I haven't read Bravo Two Zero but I have watched Michael Asher's documentary where he retraced the account of what's stated in the book.

In the documentary Michael Asher spoke to Peter Ratcliffe', the SAS RSM at the time of the B2Z operation. Peter Ratcliffe debriefed both Ryan and McNab after the events and his opinion is that they embellished what actually happened. Peter Ratcliffe also stated that had B2Z gone in vehicles rather than on foot, the mission would have been successful.

I once met Chris Ryan at a Q and A in Cheltenham and asked him how it felt for Asher to say the things he has said. Obviously, even if there was any truth to it Ryan wouldn't say so and especially not in front of an audience, but he looked furious. I can't remember his full response but it definitely contained the words "I wish I could meet him".

I bought this bravo two zero book recently off amazon because it was advertised online. it's from 1993 before I was born and it's the best story I have read. ive since done a lot of work about who is andy McNab and it seems he's a real psychopath army commander. this video of him I get the impression he's really confident and with a doesn't care about anything type confidence. it seems this success has also made him a multi millionaire really wealthy according to Google it's 1.5 million Bravo Two Zeros books at 14.99 each in 1993 and 9 million at 4.99 each.

What strikes me is that a lot of the negative reactions here are people who havent been on the ground with BTZ and still have a lot to say about it. The man obviously served in the SAS, and that tells me enough to know that this man is a very intelligent individual who has done things and seen things that we computerwarriors would never dream of . Read his book and the Real B20 book and seen the video. Asher amazed me that with minimum effort and at every turn he came up with the “key witness”. Just struck me as too good to be true in many respects. Not sure who to believe, only those guys know the true story and the guys who did the debrief and sanctioned the book release

They didn't have the propa equipment, clothing, problems with the communication, from the start it was FCK up... Saying that they put up a strong fight considering it was only a few men that were poorly equipped
Secondally, he is an author and this is how he makes his living. Therefore he has to give as much away as he can without compromising his safety and that of others close to him. If you read citations and accounts about his work in Northern Ireland with the SAS and the Royal Green Jackets he has to keep his identity and features secret because he spent a large ammount of time fighting in Northern Ireland and infiltrating the IRA undercover for the SAS.

Whether this guy is a sell out, over dramatic or not... this guy has my respect i don't think id be able to cope and operate at 100% in a killing house with live fire, let alone fight on missions with the best SAS squads in the world.
That is because a lot of them didn't do the nature of work he did. Not only did he serve in Northern Ireland as an infantry soldier but did a lot of protection detail and spec ops there. He also worked for 14th det (in the intelligence corps) which involves 'snatching' and bringing down main players and caches well worth killing over (to them).
Just watch Michael Asher's film The Real Bravo Two Zero before buying any books from this "hero". Also check out the statements of fellow Bravo Two Zero members or the SAS's Regimental Sergeant Major at the time, Peter Ratcliffe. I'm not saying the ordeal the Bravo Two Zero members went through wasn't worth the medals. But when someone claims a kill ratio only plausible in Battlefield 3 (8 soldiers causing more than 200 enemy casualties in just a few days) some fact check might be necessary.
Just saw all 4 parts of "The Real Bravo Two Zero" and I have to say that Andy McNab writes good fiction based on the reputation of the SAS. Too bad that all the discrepancies cast a very bad light on his character.

I think you mean Soldier Five for the second book. It contradicts McNab also. Coburn makes some claims of his own which contradict Asher's witnesses (not Asher himself) but there is no independent support for his claims e.g. that an anti-aircraft gun fired on them, or that Mal shot some people. If Asher can go into Iraq and question witnesses, there is no reason why McNab, Ryan, Coburn or their defenders can't also. There would be records of an anti-aircraft unit in the area, and of deaths. But guess what, none of them ever have. I know Mal and I would be interested if he ever went into print himself.

It's a shame that this guy's burned so many bridges in telling his story. Between him and Ryan the truth seems to have been given the elbow. The 250 guys these guys were supposed to have killed is not true, even the regiment seem to down play this guys story.
He didn't dislike them. Plus, what does it matter he reveals the identities of the dead (one of which I knew and I can prove it). The reason he hides is because he is still alive and participated in sensitive operation in Northern Ireland of which he would be vulnerable to, now he has publicly declared that he did participate in.
After just having read the book, before Mcnab writes anything it is checked over numerous times by the British government to ensure that it is as factual as possible whilst not giving anything away. This is done because Iraq is still a very sensitive issue in today's world. If you watch documentaries and read about the selection process that Mcnab would have gone through for the SAS it is fully justifiable that he did kill as many as he claims.

I have never been in the armed forces and in war would be the biggest coward so I take no pleasure in disrespecting SAS guys. But, this guy seems to have embellished his account of B20 and spoken very badly of a comrade. Whatever happened he should have maintained a dignified silence about his comrades and kept to the high standards we love about the SAS. I really don't like this guy and feel his obsession with anonymity is just a 'spin' to make him seem the brave secret warrior. He admits he had virtually no formal education but claims to have written his novels. Clearly he has a ghost writer. Nothing wrong with that but at least be honest enough to admit it. Have read many very uncomplimentary comments about him and he is very poorly thought of by former comrades in the regiment. I still have huge respect for the SAS regiment but not for this guy.

So basically suffering PTSD full stop, just like so many others in SF community but do not dare to say it out aloud, because he would know straight away no work whats so ever, so you have to use your ego and put on a great show chaps or your out on your own full stop, even to this day it still the number one thing with in SF community that will make man into criminals because they have no choice in the matter, the things they do and see on missions are so classified that even the government hearings into their actions cant get answers so just imagine the things they have done for their countries right or wrong, they never will be charged with war crimes or wrongful deaths no matter what the circumstances are full stop.
Also to name others that died as part of the SAS in Bravo Two Zero mission in a book is wrong and then to make out that they have killed over 250 men ( Which has a knock on effect) Just one person who dies in a car accident has the effect on the average family of 80, so just imagine what 250 men dead would do to those family and what the commanders of those men did nothing no reporting ) during the missions you would have 1/2 the Iraqi army after them, yet they are trained to be so secretive in the missions, to get the job done and have a plan for the regress, yet the men were sent in without the right radio comms and a plan based on intel that was totally wrong, it looks like to me either they were set up or a totally stuffed up mission and in the end its was those men who ran for their lives basically in a desert with Below 0 temps and no below temp clothes, they were geared up for a desert action, so andy McNabb is telling tall tales to sell a book full stop, which is all the rage now with SF communities, but a least those that tell the truth will always gain respect for the SF communities and the others will be left own their own to fight for the rest of their lives with PTSD and other mental health issues ?
When he mentions that a mother will kill anyone that tries to harm her kid, well anyone knows that, but its totally different when you dont have a gun to defend yourself and you do have rifles pistols and other means to bring hell on earth on a spot with a laser guided missiles at the ready or a C130 gunship at the ready to rain down hell on people with no weapons like they do and nothing is done about it ?

I love the sas and most of the lads are great solders but I believe from watching a documentary about the bravo two zero mission a lot of what he wrote in his book was made up....I know in books they like to embellish things to add drama but if it's a book based on reality then that's what should be in it...the truth...there are several versions of what happened and it's hard to know what is real......they would be considered brave just going behind enemy lines on botched up orders from the men at the top without adding things...that is if mcnab is lying. Most people would be scared going what they went through even if they killed nobody...just being there in the conditions that they were in was hard enough....just wish we knew the real truth....but McNabb has earnt a lot of money and got a lot of fame out of his story so why would he change his story now if what he originally said was false.
I personally think most of It was true, apart from some aspects which was added to help sell the book to make it more interesting to read, End of the Day, They Are True Heroes, most people wouldn't even pass selection, I know I Definitely Couldn't carry 200kg on my back for that far

No mate he doesnt talk about it .... the only indication you have that Dinger refutes what McNab says is he helped Kiwi write Soldier 5 ... knowing my uncle as i do he isnt a liar and wouldn't take part in a lie ... the fact he helped Kiwi write that book tells me that Kiwis account is an accurate one as opposed to the books McNab or Ryan wrote .... people always ask me why hes stayed so silent, one reason is the confidentiality agreement he signed but the main reason he never talks about it is because that mission ripped part of his soul out, Steven legs Lane was his best friend both in the regiment and in their down time, he had to watch his best mate die of hypothermia while on a mission they shouldn't have been sent on without the correct equipment , its something he wants to put in a box and keep it there.

Exaggeration is a form of lie. He said the patrol accounted for over 200 dead when there is no evidence of any casualties at all. He said they walked for miles carrying over 200lb of kit when it was only a few hundred meters. He said they went toe toe to with an AA battery with APCs and dozens of enemy when they actually lost a fight to a few farmers.

Mike Coburn (Mark or Kiwi in B2Z) as well as Mark Radcliffe (RSM at the time and author if Eye of the Storm) both disagree with Mitchell's (McNabb's) version of events. I also worked with WO2 B (Dinger) for a short period some years later who would get very angry when the issue was discussed, and who hated Mitchell with a vengeance because of how he misrepresented the patrol. Even Armstrong's (Ryan's) version of events don't match up. Combine this with the fact that he has been completely disowned by the Regimental Association and has been persona non grata by the Regiment since he wrote the book, doubt is thrown on the account.

@@cheekboy7247 It's in the last chapter of Bravo 2 Zero. He states near the end of the book that post op intelligence reports attributed the patrol with 200 Iraqi dead. I read Soldier 5 when it first came out. It gives a very different version of events and is quite critical. There is nothing in it about taking on swarms of enemy in APCs during the initial contact for example, which is consistent with Asher'sinvestigation (Although I would not take Asher's account as legion either). Quite a bit was different. The MoD tried to stop the Soldier 5 being released because of what it contained, (Both Mitchell's and Armstrong's books were vetted and edited by the MoD before release) and he had a 5 year legal battle over it.
I once read somewhere that an SAS officer (Lieutenant?) refused pointblank to go on a mission in Iraq because he felt it was badly planned by the brass and "He sat calmly drinking tea at HQ and refused to budge"

Actually that was the 3rd “bravo “ patrol that deployed that night when B20 went out, and bravo 3 zero went out, I’m guessing this patrol would have been bravo one, well according to McNab, Des powelll and Chris Ryan said it was one of the bravest acts by not deploying due to terrain no cover. And the patrol commander would have been a sergeant, whose career suffered as a result of not deploying

I don't think i've heard complaints saying McNab's book was unduly embellished, so don't get him mixed up with fellow B20 member Chris Ryan who wrote a book called 'The One That Got Away', which a lot of people (including some B20 members) say WAS embellished and a pack of lies.

It isn't full fiction you numpty. It has been proven that certain parts of Bravo Two Zero were either misinterpreted in the midst of warfare by him and/or certain bits had to be changed. What you are saying is that he wasn't in the Gulf nor on a patrol which mist died and he got captured and tortured.

shoot to kill does exist. He means if we went round bumping them off they'd be all dead but I don't think that's what 'does shoot to kill exist?' means. WHEN they shoot it is to kill because warning shots and shots to arms legs etc to incapacitate are forbidden in the yellow card's rules of engagement.
It's really sad that he chose to embellish his book from fact into fiction because it has destroyed his credibility.
So even when he is saying something genuinely worth listening to now he will be disregarded and disbelieved.

D Squadron or the Mountain troop of the SAS, destroyed numerous SCUDs, alongwith communication centers, an example would be the "VictorTwo"mission where a group of SAS men assulted an Iraqi Barracks mistaken for a petty Fibre-optic cabel center (one role the SAS had).

Good point actually, most mothers would put themselves infront of their child in desperation maybe but I don't think I've ever heard of any cases of mothers killing people who threaten their children. Incidentally, there have been huge studies now from many major wars which show that even soldiers (usually drafted, rather than highly trained that is) often don't even fire their weapons during battle because they can't do it. Huge numbers of rifles were found from the American civil war that had multiple shots stuffed down the barrel, still in them.. the reason being they kept pretending to go through the motions of loading but weren't firing. In the trenches of WW1 and even the D-Day landings huge numbers of soldiers, some even by their own accounts, didn't fire or fired over the top of the enemy line. They knew full well that the people they were firing at were just regular folk like themselves and many were also very religious and just couldn't bring themselves to kill. Often men were executed by their own officers for not fighting or trying to run away.
The military now knows this very well, and this is exactly why professional soldiers today are so rigorously trained and conditioned to kill and also to withstand the horror of actual war - anyone who can't be trained to 100% follow orders no-matter what and show any signs whatsoever of not being able to kill on command don't get in or are weeded out very quickly. It was far easier in ancient societies because many people were often thoroughly brutalised and jaded from childhood - Roman society had children treated as slaves to die in ore mines for the empire's wealth and so on - growing up then as a child was completely different to now, as you were immediately beaten, abused and thrown into work the moment you could walk and violence and military culture were literally what the entirety of life was all about in those empires (which is why Rome was so successful in terms of empire, but also why it eventually crumbled).

A good soldier but he sold his code of conduct with the SAS for dirty money. The bravo 2 zero story was embellished to the point of ridicule. Other members died in honour ,others were given medals but this man had money in his sights and has sadly let the regiment down.

I mean, being dropped off behind enemy lines in open desert to go around on foot blowing up landlines and Scuds sounds like a suicide mission to me.

I take your point that he does deserve some recognition for his service but my point is in relation to the book
which was clearly embellished. Some of the patrol died in that operation and for that reason I don't think he should have pocketed a lot of money from his own made up account of what happened. It seems very insensitive to the regiment and the families of those who were lost. You say so what but respect and honour do matter in my opinion.

Then why the fuck tell people the actual names of the 3 men that never came back after that fucked up mission that mcnab himself was ic of? And if mcnab actually read the lawernce of aribia book he would of known that the syrian desert in winter never gets above freezing. In his book bravo two zero he states that as its a desert they didnt need sleeping bags that ultimatly cost the lives of 2 of the patrol
@ScoopzyDaizy yeah thats a fair point actually didnt think of it that way. true the sas can find whoever they want. tbf the reason i bet they dont is because to the average member of the public this glorifies the sas massively and will will be mesmorised by the mcnab story as i previously was untill i looked more in depth. so swings both ways kid

Because the more famous ones which are alive now was one involved in a notorious plane assault, one in Bravo Two Zero (who didn't see service in NI) and one in Mirbat.
